20 years ago I was at a song writing event in Toronto and Stan was there and nobody seemed to realize who Stan was but I did because I had bought this very LP decades ago. So I went over and said hi and I told him I had his LP. And he goes “ oh YOU were the one who bought it” … 😅 its a good record.
My pleasure to post this for all to view. I asked Stan many months ago if I could post this on TH-cam. I understand he is looking at putting together a 'best of' compilation in the near future. Hopefully, he'll add a couple of new tunes for his fans to hear.
From the glimpse I caught of the last Juno awards, music like this will always be timeless and appreciated. I wish actual talent and self-respect with less degeneracy would make a comeback in Canadian music.
Yes, "Undertow" (released in 1992) is a monster of an album for Stan Meissner and it was grossly underrated; however, please be informed that "One Chance" came out half a decade earlier and was a giant hit in North America. (It even won a Canadian Juno award!) I hope Stan decides to release some new material in the near future. Don't forget to check out his late 90's project CD with Peter Fredette called "Metropolis". The album is called "The Power of The Night".
I just met Stan this weekend and was like who is this guy. Had to look him up! Super down to earth guy. I totally remember this song - it is such a great one!
First time hearing this version. I’ve only known of the Eddie Money version. This definitely has that 80’s sound, more pop like as Eddies version is more rock sounding
this man is so under-rated!!! and this song still resonates with me...* i bet if corey hart recorded it, it would have been huge in the states. **that is sad....
I love finding and reconnecting with all these great songs that were seemingly long forgotten, yet were somehow etched into my memory. Great music is timeless and the good feelings these songs always bring up are never diminished by the passing of time. One Chance is no exception. Thanks for posting curo3!
This song was one of my absolute favorites from the mid 80's. When I was a DJ , I used to play this all the time early at socials. One of the most underated artist. I wish there were more videos of Stanon here.
Thank you for this. I am a kid of the 80s and a self-professed music trivia pro but I totally forgot about this one. The scary thing is that I can still sing along after not hearing it since it was out. :)
Hey..can u remember a song with the line "I can't break away from you "..in it? From around the same time.. I thought it might be Stan Meissner but not sure..its a man with a similar voice. No search on the internet has helped!
It took many years trying to find a copy of that video from any source. It's too bad Stan Meissner didn't release any of his videos for retail purchase. I've tried finding them by contacting him directly through his former website and by trying to search out and reach former people at A&M Records to no success... Thanks for checking it out! I hope he releases another album at sometime in the future!
(Goosebumps) Driving to Peterborough in the middle of the night after my first ever girlfriend broke my little heart. (Chuckle) GodI loved that 82 Honda Civic! LOL Thanks for posting and letting me remember a time when things were so much simpler.
I have been looking for this song for years. It's like Stan Meissner has never even existed!! Thank you so much for posting this. I'd like to track this CD down though.
there are some great unexpected chord changes and surprising moments in this tune. The chorus itself seems to come out of nowhere, but fits perfectly. The chord at 1:08 in the pre-chorus is also a nice touch. Strong "tag"coming out of the choruses too. The shot of stan doing the fist clench through the window is a classic.
Stan's version is the original (he wrote the song). I like both versions of the song as each has their own unique characteristics. I think there's a lot more production in Eddie's version.
Great song and a high-quality video! It's truly scary how DATED anything '80s looks. (A 'Mad Men'-type 'period' series about the '80s should be made...)
+AOR Spirit I see what your comment is and there's a good 80's Canadian rock song called 'The Girl Of My Dreams' by Bram Tchaikovsky. You might want to look it up.
Didn't know there was a video for "I want Everything". Will check my old video tapes (BETA - HA HA!!!) to see if anything happened to get on there from the old CBC "Video Hits" days.
@jimP71 : stan meissner is still a staff songwriter for several recording companies. he has been president of the society of canadian songwriters and on the board of directors for the songwriters hall of fame. yes, he is still very much involved in the music business.
Ahhhh, Much Music. I used to watch this on the Much too. Back in the day when video music shows actually played music videos!! Erika Em, Chris Ward, that hot Steve guy! lol.
@jimP71 I haven’t seen Peterborough since 1988 I think. The place still has good memories for me, and I will go back there for a visit just as soon as I can get back to good old Ontario. (If Calgary doesn’t kill me first…. Right now it’s -20C here)
Funny... I loved the song so much that I bought all the formats of this album. I first bought the single, then the LP, then the cassette tape (for my car back then), then finally the limited edition 24K gold pressing CD. It's still on my top 10 list of most played CD's/ MP3 albums. Have you heard Eddie Money's version of the song?
I've heard a brief clip of the Eddie Money version, but it was Stan Meissner's version that was my introduction to the song back then. Oddly enough, when I first heard this song (and before I found out who sang it), I mistook Meissner's vocals on the song for those of Corey Hart.

I'm glad I was able to find it here on youtube, but I still can't get it on mp3.
Karla, those 2 favorite songs of mine that you mention from the Stan Meissner CD 'Undertow' are also here on TH-cam.. do a search here and you'll find them.
It is my understanding that he is working on a 'Best Of' package that may even shed light on a new song or two. Don't know when completion is expected - but I understand that it is in the works...

Such a haunting, achingly beautiful song... The '80s really were a great time for music, up here in Canada! :D
Love 80s ever. AOR!
ahhh the 80’s 😎 sure miss you 😘
If I missed the 80's in 2019, I really miss them in 2020 as we sit in isolation because of the pandemic. Agreed, sure do miss the 80's.
me too so good so gone
Back in the day, creepy stalking was much more romantic than it is nowadays.
I love this song...really beautiful.
Another classic from the 80s. I MISS it so much

I don't know why, but this song is classic...
From the glimpse I caught of the last Juno awards, music like this will always be timeless and appreciated. I wish actual talent and self-respect with less degeneracy would make a comeback in Canadian music.
Another classic song.
Another great canadian 80s song!

I can't believe how much 80's music I've forgotten. What fun to rediscover it all!
Great Canadian classic from 1986.
I love this song. Reminds me of the mistakes I have made. So many mistakes.
we all made so many mistakes
we all been there this song makes me think of my youthful days i feel love
Yes me too love ❤
I don't know why he only made three albums throughout the course of his career if he had such a great singing voice.
First time hearing this version. I’ve only known of the Eddie Money version. This definitely has that 80’s sound, more pop like as Eddies version is more rock sounding
Such a great 80's tune..
The truth is not many are as talented as Stan.Great ballad, signature song. The guy can write a great rock classic that's right on the money.
this man is so under-rated!!! and this song still resonates with me...* i bet if corey hart recorded it, it would have been huge in the states. **that is sad....

Great 80's tune. Kind of always reminded me of Eddie Money. Am i crazy?
This is the original version. Stan Meissner wrote it and Eddie Money covered it a year later.

I really like this version of the song. The video reminds me of a Lifetime Network movie. You know, the obsessive ex. 😒

Hey Trudy, what about the popular music TV show - "Video Hits" and my once a week favorite show "Good Rockin' Tonight"!
@jimP71 I haven’t seen Peterborough since 1988 I think. The place still has good memories for me, and I will go back there for a visit just as soon as I can get back to good old Ontario. (If Calgary doesn’t kill me first…. Right now it’s -20C here)
Hi...that's for sure! I've been waiting for somebody to find a video of Stan's song, "I want everything"!
I think the guy in the street with the moustache is Thom Rachford
of A Thief In The Night fame
Yeah..I remember "Video Hits". Seems like ages ago now. At any rate, hope your search turns up something!
Funny...
