Still love this song as a Canadian girl growing up in the 80s this one is special brings back fond memories. Love Eddie Scwartz as he wrote and released this first before the group America did a cove same year.
One of my most favorite gems from the 80's. Only way to listen to it is LOUD - letting that synthesizer rattle your woofers! How many times have I played it? Lord only knows! Should have been #1 on Billboard, not just in Canada.
This is one of those tunes that comes over the radio on occasion and it causes me to pull over, lay my head back, and reminisce of times worth remembering and the girls who I'd love to dedicate this song to. It's a perfect song to listen to when you wish to revisit your nostalgic and best memories of the 80s. That's why it has the autoplay spot on my channel page. Thanks Eddie for such magnificent and beautiful memories.
This is a great example of the the kind of amazingly well crafted, heartfelt pop songs that came out of the 80s. It takes a lot of skill and general music know-how to put something like this together. Getting under the hood of a song like this is a great lesson for any aspiring songwriter.
An amazing classic from a Canadian legend who's music has been covered by some legends such as Joe Cocker, meatloaf and many more Eddie is a fantastic songwriter
This is a beautiful, classic song. Absolutely timeless. I just purchased it on iTunes. I can't believe that Eddie is 60 years old now! Thank you SO MUCH for posting this!
I'm listening to this a dozen times a day. It brings it all back, right down to the raw emotion of the pain from a heart that had been melted like a beeswax candle in a bonfire. I think of Annabel, Sharon, and MaryAnn and I cry so hard because they were taken from us too soon. They were all special girls. And I think of Jocelyn, Sylvie, and Trudy and I cry even harder because they were taken from ME all too soon. Special girls..every one of them.
Haven't heard this in forever. Funny how a song that I listened to so much could become forgotten - only to hear it again and remember every single reason I loved it in the first placed. Such a bittersweet song.
Did you see the original album cover for this? If I was Eddy, I wouldn't have done it. The band members are standing at a police line up and everyone is at the 6 foot mark except Eddy. He's below the 5' 6" line.
Super underrated songwriter and performer who got lost in the glitz and trendiness of the 80s, but found his greatest success writing hits for others There are lots of covers of this - but none come close to the feel and emotion of the original.
I bought this on a cassette in 1984 and it still sounds great! Eddie Schwartz wrote " Hit me with your best shot " and co wrote some Lawrence Gowan material too . What a great talent . This is still my fave Of his work
hi I did not know Eddy wrote for Gowan . I have meet both of them through my girl friend who is related to Schwartz family . Gowan sang at my birthday party he was great /
Brian Price He co wrote some on Gowans ..."call me Larry" and "Good catches up" albums" all the lovers in the world".I met Lawrence Gowan too...great performer and nice person
Always enjoyed listening to this since it came out (in '84 ?). Another great Canadian song. Great sound: vocals and instruments!! Thanks for posting!!!
On a random TH-cam spree here. Last time I heard it was back in '84. For 30 years I've wondered if it really was a song as I could only seem to remember the notes of the chorus. I almost skipped it but fortunately I let it play. Great forgotten track.
Same thing happened to Me today. Just popped into my head and I had to Google the lyrics I could remember and got to this. Don't recognize the name of the band at all. Was this tune from a film?
+pappachook As far as Eddie Schwartz goes, I think this was his biggest (and perhaps only) hit. I don't exactly have any memories associated with this track, just always vaguely remembered the chorus. Not sure if it was from a film or not, although many good forgotten songs did get radio airplay from being in the movies. It is unfortunate that there aren't more mainstream stations playing this type of music today, not in my area. At least we all have TH-cam.
+carriersignal The Story behind this song is even stranger than I first thought. it turns out the version I was familiar with was by none other than Meatloaf!! from his 1986 album Blind Before I Stop. The weird thing is I live on the West coast of Scotland!! in a very small rural village. My mum was a Meat fan so I guess she must of played it a lot 😃. just find it so strange that it has taken until now to pop into my head.
thanks Regis, Eddie was such a giftedt songwriter and talented musician , too bad he didn't get the recognition he should have. Eddie's a true Canadian music legend !
Thanks Regis. If you look at my other comments about the song, you'll see I lived in Toronto for eight years and drove the road often. I'd put put my mind in Eddie's place. It was north of the city in '84-'92 and when I lived there, looked exactly as the video shows it. Now it's completely paved and totally developed. I love Toronto still but it's one of those cities that can't leave one square foot of anything alone. Oh well, better than living in Detroit or many other U.S. metropolises.
Dedicated to my Wendy...never was there a woman who was so special and so loved in my entire life...I miss you babe, oh God in heaven knows how much I miss you...
What an awesome example of how truly great the music of the 80s was, cheesy videos and all. Simple beat, gentle rhythm, words that are easy on the mind, and a theme about love lost and love gained that we all can relate to it one way or another. Thanks for the upload as I listen to this 3 or 4 times a day.
Miss 1984...😑😑😑 From Toronto...I was 16 when this came out. , Always made me think of a special girl...she was a gift in my life , I will never forget her, even though she passed away last year...I'm 52 Now. Love this song..
Smooth 'cruisin' down the lakefront' music. I found this and right away sent it to a long lost love as a reminder that she was a "special girl", and will always hold the lease on a corner of my heart where nobody else goes but her and I.
Back again for another few listens..man, this piece of great music personifies so many of my summers. There are so many emotionally moving memories tied to this song that my heart goes from one end of the thought spectrum, all the way back to the other end..and then it does it all over again with an entirely different set of feelings. Mostly I think of Trudy.."dreams, they come and go, but thoughts of her are like a floor show..I'll never stop loving you Trudy...
This song reminds me of my fiancee. Never thought I would find love. I found her at 33. We were friends then dated then engaged. I lost her to cancer in April of 2021. I was 44 she was just shy of 55. I still love her and I miss her
I remember watching this video in '84 when it first came out. I'd just broken up with my gf of two years. I sat there and cried like a baby. God knows what ever became of her, but I still think of her when I hear this song.
Remember exactly when this came out. 15 years old. Must have watched the video on ‘Video Hits’ or Good Rockin’ Tonight. Brings back memories of a better, simpler time. Loved it the minute I heard it. Still do.
Thanks for your nice compliments. This is definitely one of the best songs of the 80s in my book. Eddie was/is a talented, yet sadly unappreciated songwriter and a lot of big names wouldn't have a pot to piss in if it wasn't for Eddie. You tell him that please and give him a hug and a long, firm handshake from me for so many awesome journeys down the memory lane of his musical donations to his eras.
This song is magnificent. When it comes over my mp3 system in the car, I have to listen to it 10 times in a row. Timeless memories of eras that I'd give all my rmaining years to have back for one summer.
Eddie Schwartz wrote and sang this song and was released in 1984. America sang this song in 1988. It's funny how people have it wrong and keep on saying America wrote this song . This is from wikapedia : Schwartz's third and last album for a major record label, Public Life, came out two years later and featured another Canadian hit with "Strike." Also included on this album was the original recording of his composition, "Special Girl," which was a minor hit for him and became a bigger hit for the band, America. Please please please stop saying America wrote this song it's false.
CanadianLdy68 Very often covers are the most popular versions, and people don't always know or care that it's a cover, for example Etta James's version of "At Last," Cyndi Lauper's version of "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun," Bill Medley & Jennifer Warnes's "I've Had the Time of My Life," to name but a few...

Such a classic song. This from a girl who lived in his 'hood growing up. Eddie's talent is phenomenal!
Perfect arrangement, perfect melody, perfect understated synth solo, perfect execution, practically perfect in every way.
I fully agree
@@rufustambley4995 And did i mention the perfect amount of vulnerability in Eddie's voice. Can you have too many good things in one song?
Truly one of the best songs produced, sang, performed...ever!

Eddie Schwartz.. Special Girl
One of my favourites of all time.
Love the old T-bird as well.
An amazing classic from a Canadian legend who's music has been covered by some legends such as Joe Cocker, meatloaf and many more Eddie is a fantastic songwriter
There's a Joe Cocker version? I need to find it!!!! The only other two that I heard were from America and then Meatloaf.
84’ was a special year 👍🏻🇨🇦☮️
Beautiful Song..thank u Eddie

America - awesome.
Very nice song love it
...the melody and the incredibly simple/complex (read between the lines) straightforward lyrics are what FUEL this song.

I love this song, so sad, for all the kitties i have loved and lost, each one was a special girl.
Bought this cassette when I was 14 and have loved it since 1984
This is without question the best love song I have ever heard. I think Eddie Schwarz got it absolutely right with this one.

Those summer memories of 84 are hard to FADE! I was going into grade 10 at Central Technical High School.
Heard it on the radio last night, forgot how much I liked it.
Good ol Canadian boy :) Excellent songwriter singer
+Glenn Wutzke these songs are better than the American songs.I guess not enough exposure,
Makes me proud to be Canadian.
Such a brilliant song. I love the chord progressions in the opening and in each verse. Thanks, Eddie!
the way that bass line pushes the chord progression upward is awesome
Timeless song. Anyone hearing this the first time would not point to the 80's
I heard this the other day from an old thumb drive and I swear I’ve played close to 100 times already!
one of the best classic by eddie .....love this song.....heard after so long
Those high synth notes make me think of ciccadas buzzing on a hot hazy summer day in Toronto.
Yup.
I'm in Toronto...heard many this summer
A timeless gem.
So true
One of my favourite love songs
I heard this song from one of those 80's movies...and yes the 80's most definitely rocked !!
An emotive, good song with a hell of a nice Lydian melodic change. So pretty.
Always enjoyed listening to this since it came out (in '84 ?). Another great Canadian song. Great sound: vocals and instruments!! Thanks for posting!!!

What great memories while listening to this version.
Truly one of the all-time classics.
this was my fave song in my mid teen years, haven't heard this song in ages what memories.
I’ve loved this song for over 35 years! The only reason Meat Loaf and America decided to cover it, is because it is so well written!
this fine tune keeps occasionally popping into my head out of the blue
