I noticed that everyone plays 200 pop cap, I always favored 500 myself but the imperial age turns into an absolute slog fest that just takes 4x longer for probably the same result. Is this the same reason that the community stays with 200 or is it also a lag issue with trying to keep that many entities going x however many players there are?

You said it right there. Game gets too long and grindy. However 500 works great for other modes. Regicide is a personal favorite.

Don't be such a drama queen. Arbalester or onager will do much better than hand cannoneers vs chakram throwers because they outrange them. It's also nothing new to have some pretty absurd situational power on certain units - interaction between basically any archer and huskarls will look as one-sided as this. Even when actual broken tech like obsidian arrows and feudal blacksmith vils for Incas were a thing they didn't destroy the game, but they did get patched out eventually.
