Ronnie Brewer at least had an actual reason why he shot like that. It's because he had a childhood injury to his elbow that affected the way he learned how to shoot. Said shooting style was never corrected.

Cole Aldridge's was really not that bad I think. Like bigger guys struggle to compensate for the arc they need to hit to make the swish, him putting the ball behind his head I think was what was helping him compensate for that. Besides the initial behind the head, the rest of the rest looks pretty clean for a big man to me haha.

Not really. The granny shot you're thinking of is more of a throw. Rick Barry flicks the ball in with his wrists. His technique is fluid, strong, consistent and, above all, very teachable.
Rick Barry is not a good shooter with a bad shot in the same vain as Shawn Marion or Larry Bird. Those people can never teach people to shoot like they do. Barry's got his form down to a science.
I remember my friends mocking Shawn Marion's shooting form, and said that it's never gonna be that accurate to even shoot, then they realized how good he is on the three point line and instantly ate their words for saying such. Lmao

How do we remove Rick Barry from this video? The dude was a legend, and he shoots better than most overhand. Plus, however strange the shot looked, it's much more simple and effective than the normal shot. When Wilt tried it for a year, the dude averaged 61% (compared to a previous 51%), on a shot he had never tried before. 28 of his hundred points came from the granny shot.

If you're hitting 70% or higher, that form isn't ugly. Anything less must be changed.
If you guys didn’t catch the trend, the players with the ‘ugliest’ form also happened to be the bigger guys. They’re too powerful to execute the traditional form so they need to adapt and use a smaller range of motion of release

There are many of these which are weird but effective. Almost all of those are smooth and have good balance and coordination, like Wilkes, Aldrige, and Marion. The bad ones are herky-jerky. Nelson and Michael Adams are the only 2 that are jerky but still pretty effective. The bad ones also tended to always be changing, Shaq and Wilt being the prime examples. Wilkes was weird and silky-smooth, grooving that same motion for decades.

Rick Barry's free throw was actually the norm back in the early days of the NBA along with the set shot. Don Nelson's free throw was about the same as Bob Cousy's set shot.

Kale Brantley his form isn't horrible because it's a good technique to make free throws. Try shooting it yourself and you will understand why. The underhand shot is more soft than a overhead shot so it's more likely to go in.

Marion's actually isn't that bad. It is strange, but he has good form. He just starts from his chest and he doesn't extend his arm on the follow through. But his shot is one fluid motion with a good foundation

George Mikan could be the winner for the strangest form and he was a legendary center back in the 1940s and 1950s. However, his ESPN Sportscenter commercial is hilarious.
The granny shot is the best way to shoot a free throw if you learn how to do it right. It's a softer shot, so you have a better chance of making it if you hit the rim. It's usually real strong guys that are terrible free throw shooters, because their shots aren't soft enough.
If a free throw is ugly, but has a high percentage, it pretty much nullifies the claim
Rick Barry has a beautiful underhand form that gets perfect backspin on the ball which will make it die on the rim instead of bouncing off which makes it more likely to fall in the basket.

I always wanted to imagine how it feels to be big and shoot, so I tried to play with a volleyball and man, it's so hard to shoot when the ball feels small and light. There is no force against your hands and arms that indicates how to aim and how much power to put in your shot.

There is no excuse for a professional player to shoot less than 60%. They could have worked on it but chose not to. Magic Johnson shot 76% in his 2nd season, but wasn't happy with that so he practiced and eventually got it up to a league-leading 91.1%. This is why Shaq and Wilt will never be on my GOAT list.

That Cole Aldridge shot is the "smoothest" of all the ugly shots but it is a high archer with basically straight legs. My actual foul shot is kind of like that one. Once you get into a rhythm, though, you can swish like 10-15 in a row.
