Mr.Magnuzz wilt tried rick barry' form for a time. in one a game he shot 28 out of 32 and scored 100 im total. but figured it wasn't manly so he reverted to his old form.
Rick Barry's form is the most natural and basic form of throwing an object that big to a point that high. It was an art form. And it worked like a charm.
Ronnie Brewer at least had an actual reason why he shot like that. It's because he had a childhood injury to his elbow that affected the way he learned how to shoot. Said shooting style was never corrected.
Ones I would add that I can remember from childhood: Jerry Stackhouse (extreme squat) Karl Malone (constant muttering) Desmond Mason (push shot) Nick Van Exel (shot like 3 feet back from the line) Marcus Camby (similar windup motion as Wilkes but from the left side) Ben Wallace (just bad) I also seem to remember someone else who shot way from the right side like Michael Adams. I also seem to remember Ty Hill having something weird about his form but I can't remember what.

I thought Shawn Marion was bad but Chuck Hayes is different breed. It's like his body wanted to move while shooting Free throw but his foot was glued to the floor.
How do we remove Rick Barry from this video? The dude was a legend, and he shoots better than most overhand. Plus, however strange the shot looked, it's much more simple and effective than the normal shot. When Wilt tried it for a year, the dude averaged 61% (compared to a previous 51%), on a shot he had never tried before. 28 of his hundred points came from the granny shot.
@@yesplease29 For the reason ParaOG already described. You don't have time and the defenders will easily stop you or the shot. But for free throws it's very effective
Wilt and Shaq were so physically dominant that it wouldn't have fair if they were good free throw shooters. Rick Barry's underhanded free throw was so accurate and simple that players who shot poorly overhand should've tried switching to it. An unorthodox form shouldn't be considered "ugly" if it goes in over 70 percent of the time.
buildvr this is so incorrect it’s retarded. Basically only Rick and a couple others shot like this. It was completely unconventional and frowned upon by many players. Shaq said himself that he would rather shoot 0% from the FT than shoot like Rick
3:17 improving Noahs free throws: his hand is on the side of the basketball, his palm is facing away from the hoop as he's going up, he has to correct it last second. He might want to try moving his hand to the top of the ball to allow his palm to go underneath. If he DOES move his hand to the top of the ball, lock the wrist early that way it doesn't cause a 2 motion jumper. He's shooting with 2 hands which is causing side spin. Might want to try relaxing the guide hand on the side of the basketball, ITS JUST THERE FORR SUPPORT. the guide hand fingers fall off as the wrist goes forward. set point timing. Might want to try syncing with the ball, when the ball goes down, hips go down, ball goes up, hips go up nice and fluid on toes as he gets to set point.
There are many of these which are weird but effective. Almost all of those are smooth and have good balance and coordination, like Wilkes, Aldrige, and Marion. The bad ones are herky-jerky. Nelson and Michael Adams are the only 2 that are jerky but still pretty effective. The bad ones also tended to always be changing, Shaq and Wilt being the prime examples. Wilkes was weird and silky-smooth, grooving that same motion for decades.
Rick Barry's free throw was actually the norm back in the early days of the NBA along with the set shot. Don Nelson's free throw was about the same as Bob Cousy's set shot.

My coach told me I owed him one mile for every free throw missed, and he taught me granny style. I got up to 78% by the end of the year, with the first six games counting against my final percentage.
Rick Barry has a beautiful underhand form that gets perfect backspin on the ball which will make it die on the rim instead of bouncing off which makes it more likely to fall in the basket.
Notice how even a bad form still get you good percentage because it has a smooth motion, while someone that has a decent form are worst when they have a long pause when they reach their head
The word "Ugliest" in the title is out of place. "Oddest" would be far more appropriate, even "Strangest". But since you selected "Ugliest", Rick Barry's underhanded method is anything but ugly. And, since your title says "NBA" history, his NBA career % is 90%, not 89.3% (NBA and ABA). One more thing: You should have included Hal Greer.
I once heard Shaq’s right wrist didn’t bend back as far as most people’s wrists, so he couldn’t really arc and guide the ball toward the basket from the free throw line. That was also why his hook shots were so flat.
