Not really. Most large-scale developments have some sort of government intervention. Plus it will bring people and events downtown to spend money and provide hundreds of jobs to citizens. Some people balk at the sticker price but it's called investment. I wonder how many of those people downtown saw their property values rise or the business owners see an uptick in profit due to the stadium.
