Having to use active or passive radars to find enemies hiding in clouds could be cool, but the clouds would have to be synchronised between players.

Should be trivial to sync clouds with minimal performance impact, assuming they're using a seed based perlin noise system.

@@thamghoul5719 Yea pretty much. Nab the seed from the server and it's current step in time, sync it, and make sure every couple hundred frames that things are still aligned.
It should essentially be the same system they currently have in place to make sure time of day is correct on clients mixed with a bit of Minecraft's world generation.
Hopefully there wouldn't be a graphics option so low that Fakenamerton's scenario isn't a factor; perhaps a server side toggle to just straight up disable clouds entirely for performance oriented servers.

Personally: I am ok with Keen focusing more on vrage3/SE2 than continuing with SE1. it's still fun, mostly enjoyable even when lag hits, and still is great for just building and messing about in a really big sandbox. I just hope next time around they give way more care into round blocks. I don't just want rounded corners, I want rounded versions of every straight block.

I think they have a tough transition ahead may players will excited to see a new game as they fell that SE1 has done them well and they have had a lot of fun out of it. On the other hand players may feel like its unfinished and still lacks performance. Fingers crossed they tackle this hurdle well.

The repetitive effect on the water comes from the mathematical function generating the ripples. It's something like a sine or cosine. One way to mitigate this, is by adding random noise to the function, another way is by using FFT (fast fourier transformation). FFT basically allows you to recreate the graph of any mathematical function by utilizing an infinite sum of different sines and cosines. By selectively omitting some of these contributing parts, based on the location of the voxel, the repetition can be broken aswell. This should look way nicer than just adding noise.

They get paid when new people buy the game. It would be unfair to make past buyers re-buy the game. Plus it would be confusing for new buyers as to the difference between the two. I admit that I skim these updates and I am not exactly sure what the devs intend to do. But it seems like there is new mechanics and playability which are all things I would want in a games update so I would rather the game is an large update rather than a brand new game I have to buy to enjoy.

It seems that we all agree that Space Engineers needs a new engine, considering that many of the current features were not initially designed for the old engine.
Personally, I have a few wishes for improvements:
    1. **Better Gravitational Simulation:** Imagine planets, moons, and asteroids realistically rotating on their axes and orbiting the sun. This would add a fascinating dynamic to the game.
    2. **Improved Structural Integrity of Buildings and Structures:** I would be willing to redesign all my structures and spacecraft from scratch if it means introducing improved structural and building integrity.
    3. **Seasons:** With planets moving around the sun, introducing different seasons that affect gameplay would not only be visually appealing but also add tactical considerations to the game.
    4. **VR Support:** Given the rise of virtual reality, there should definitely be a focus on complete VR support, including hand tracking and room scale. The idea of controlling switches and spacecraft with hands in the game world is intriguing.
    5. **More PVE:** The current world of Space Engineers is essentially empty. While mods can add a lot, not all responsibility for content creation should be placed on the community. In the era of artificial intelligence, it should be possible to introduce AI that generates additional content.
    6. **Multiplayer Focus:** In such a vast world, even if it's just one solar system, there is too much space for a single player. A real focus on multiplayer support to accommodate several hundred players per server would be a significant enhancement.
I hope the developers take these suggestions into consideration and make Space Engineers with the Vrage3 Engine an even more captivating experience!

  • @taemien9219
    @taemien9219 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +6

One of the issues that needs to be addressed either in the original SE or in a sequel is a focus on obstacles. Right now in SE the basic obstacle is getting from surface to orbit so you have access to rare minerals. Once you do that, you've effectively won the game. Everything outside of that is self imposed goals and such.
The biggest strength of Space Engineers is that you can do all kinds of things and build many different vehicles with different functions. The biggest weakness is you don't really get tested on anything. I don't expect SE to be a survival game like Empyrion. But as a game focused around engineering it doesn't really put your skills and talents and experience to the test.
One of the biggest let downs was when we had access to these different planets. Unless you start on one, there's little to no reason to visit them. When they should have made the challenge of getting established on your first planet then leaving that planet and landing on another, using the resources unique to the first to do so. Then getting established on the second planet to gather the unique resources there to enable you to land and establish yourself on the next one. Then getting established to finally unlock all materials and work out a way to get back and forth between the different planets having access to all unique materials.
Finally culminating in an engineering project that requires said logistics and engineering from all the established points from prior.
Without that sort of gameplay loop. There's little reason to continue playing once you've built your big mining rig, your crazy wheeled rover base, and your capitol ship. And even all those things you kind of have to force yourself to do them. There's no real ingame reason to do those things.
These are issues SE or SE2 needs to tackle.

Considering that it is a 10 year old game, it does make sense to make the sequel. The problem being is that a lot of the old guard might get irritated. One thing KSH could do is have a sort of loyalty package. For example if you want to buy SE 1+2 it is X dollars but if you already own the first one you get a certain discount. Could go a long way to keeping existing and possibly winning back some old players.

I really hope they remember to make all this pretty stuff interactive, reactive and consequential. The prettiest water in gaming means nothing if there's nothing IN the water and nothing to DO with the water. Spectacle is a very fragile means of attracting players. It's mechanics that keep folks coming back. I know we're still early in but it wouldn't be the first time a dev team has been excited about updated visuals and ended up with a rather empty game.

When FFT comes up with regards to water, it means the Fast Fourier Transform, which is a collection of formulas and algorithms that allow you to decompose any arbitrary waveform into a series of sine waves and vice versa. The upshot is that it allows for extremely realistic-looking water waves and very high performance! Sea of Thieves uses FFT and some post-processing to make their water waves, so depending on the implementation, we might be able to expect something like that in SE2! Very exciting!
A user by the name of Acerola also has some good TH-cam videos on wave simulation in games and their second video notably uses FFT to achieve waves quite similar to Sea of Thieves'.

I find it funny how folk think one can just, um, "inject?" a new engine into the game.
That's literally not how it works. It's not like an API. It the literal heart and framework of the beast.
Plus, they already said that's not how it works, nor happening in one of their presentations a month ago lol.
This is for the next game. No questions asked.
Might I also say, it looks like they're seriously pouring on the steam.
Those presentations had me feeling like they were FIRMLY in the concept stages, while getting the engine ticking. This looks like they have quite a bit more dialed in than they led on, or had some breakthroughs quite recently.
    I'm excited

I agree with your statement on the way they handle it "making or braking their next release". The team definitely needs to take in the communities thoughts before making a decision.

Migrating the existing Space Engineers to VRage3 is simply not a financially viable option. The new engine has obviously already cost a hefty sum of money and more of it will be invested into it. If VRage3 is going to be used in *a* Space Engineers game then that game must be a "Space Engineers 2", made, offered, and sold separately from the current Space Engineers. Clean break. It makes also technical sense but mostly you simply can not do otherwise because of money. Now, that said, nothing forbids you from being clever about it. For example, you could offer that "Space Engineers 2" as an early access game with the additional incentive that if you own the current Space Engineers game you get an extra discount, or some other good bonus thing. Then, I think, it should work nicely with most of the already existing player community.

I am very faithful that performance will improve. Keen is one of the few gamestudios that actually managed to properly utilize old AMD GCN GPUs by making proper use of compute shaders, which requires quite a bit of programming skill. Utilizing that and DX12 will propably alleviate the CPU bottleneck by a lot. IMO the most critical aspect is managing to have the simulation aspects of the game scale well with CPU core count, which is a huge technical challenge.

I don't think people would be terribly upset about a new SE game (SE2). Especially if the changes/differences are vastly superior and not possible as an SE1 update. That's not to say there won't be people upset about their ship designs needing to be redone, or having to pay more money to play basically the same game. Perhaps Keen could discount SE2 if you have had SE1 for a certain period of time, or have spent X amount of dollars or hours on SE1 (or some combination of these). I do think, no matter what Keen does, they need to find a way to expand their player base, without ruining the game for those who currently play. Maybe official race leagues, PVP fleet battles, an expanded universe with tens or hundreds of planets, cities, space stations. It seems the "economy" aspect has been easily implemented and could be easily improved on. No matter what, I love this game and can't wait for whatever new developments come along. They've done a wonderful job in adding new content, without costing fortunes or ruining aspects of the game to the average player. SE is why I will never play WoT again.

I don't see any way a 'VRage 3 update' for Space Engineers would work.
We know that VRage 3 is a fundamentally different engine from VRage 2 with very little of VRage 2's code being carried forward.
It is made to achieve the same results as VRage 2, and more, but it's a complete rewrite, it isn't the same engine in any way other than spirit.
You don't just swap a game to a completely seperate engine, it doesn't work like that.
If they were to attempt a 'VRage 3 update' for current Space Engineers, they would likely have to rebuild most of the game from scratch in VRage 3, and at that point, why would they not just make a full sequel?
If VRage 3 is used for 'Space Engineers', it will be for a sequel, not an update.
If you're reading this and are expecting a 'VRage 3 update', don't dissapoint yourself.

@@LastStandGamersYeah, I do wish they were more clear on what their plans are, I understand wanting to keep surprises hidden, but I've always appreciated a more open style of development.
In regards to the current drip-feed of DLC, I see it as a way of keeping some form of revenue flowing while they build towards their next release rather than any indication of intent to continue development of the current Space Engineers game in perpetuity.
They still need money to continue their work, and it seems their current DLC model is serving that need well enough, and cosmetic alt-versions of existing blocks are easy to pump out relatively quickly.
In terms of a Space Engineers sequel, I would hope they would carry forward most, if not all, of their content from the first game and build upon it.
I think it would be disappointing to have all of the work done on updates and DLCs made for Space Engineers to be left behind for a sequel.

The idea of swapping out the engines does make me feel like older builds have a risk of being void. Not just builds either, but environments people have crafted with voxel editing. If true, then that would likely annihilate everyone's lifetime efforts in the game, there's no guarantee of blueprint compatibility. This gives me Overwatch/1/2 CSGO/CS2 vibes where a previous game was fully killed off. But doing it in a creative game cannot be allowed to happen. I'd presume Keen knows this and to retain the old experience for people that want it, making a spengies 2 is the right move...

It's pretty exciting to think of engineering some water pumps to feed into cooling some reactors, which are in turn releasing a huge plume of smoke, and it would be great if in turn that generates some specific clouds in the area. Probably would be a waste of effort to carry that into the next step of rain.
Maybe that could make for a more alive world, but I think the novelty of that is limited. My interest in the environmental beauty is still pretty small compared to the gameplay side. I still most hope for more "purpose" in building.

Given the release of Counter Strike 2, the possibility of releasing VRage 3 as an update to SE 1 isn't off the table, expecially since SE has a *huge* modding scene that would benefit from an easier migration.

    • More granular and realistic survival model, including but not limited to food, illnesses, and hygiene.
    • More extensive flora and fauna, including but not limited to multiple planet side species, and xenomorph like "critters" randomly spawned on asteroids.
    • Better block textures, in particular, the ability to texture one side of a block independently from other sides.
    • Alien NPC factions with associated character models that will actively attempt to board your ships and bases, which you'll need to defend against.
    • Civilian NPC factions, as well with character models, that will visit your trade station to buy, sell, or trade with players, so as to create a genuine dynamic economy.
    Other things I wish for...
    • Farming of plants and trees, along with the ability to replant anything harvested via seeds.
    • A wide variety of clothing and space suits.
    • Prebuilt or player created fully functional interior modules such as a medical room, engineering space, cockpit, or berthing area that would fit in something like a 1x3x5 void between blocks, which a player can use to fill out the interior of ships with high detail surfaces.
    • Peer-to-peer server interconnectivity, so two or more SE2 players hosting dedicated servers with the exact same mod configuration can easily link their servers together allowing players the ability to traverse from one server to another.
    • NPC crew members who can man turrets, conduct repairs, and carry out menial tasks.
    • A programmable block that uses a node-based programming system.
    • A modern voip system that allows communication with people in your area, personal communications with any other player, as well as "1MC" communications on your ship or base, and communications with others in your faction.

I hope we get planets that are like earth, in regards to the water stuff, being the water covers more of the surface than the land itself. could be super fun and change up how people play.

The biggest fix I want is you can include subgrids in projections and vastly increase or remove the vanilla warhead limit.

I have almost a thousand hours of playtime in Space Engineers, so for me at least the money i paid for it were well spent. While I would consider the game to still not be "finished", I wouldn't feel like Keen abandoned it like they've done with their other projects. There is a limit to how much development time can be spent on a game, and they have spent a LOT of it working on it all these years. At some point they simply have to stop and move on, there's no getting around that if we want to see them continue existing as a game developer.
Maybe it helps that I never saw SE as a true "game", per se, but more like an engineering sandbox, so was prepared for it to end long ago.

Id like to see this up for people to play in once they have the ability to interact with these environments on a SE like scale, even if its only creative like gameplay with a very limited selection of assets to use. Think Minecraft when it was Infdev-Alpha-Beta-Current. If they go the CS route where CS GO Ceased to exist for CS2, then cool. I would at least like to see then an opt in beta so that the engine can be playtested with feeback in real time as they make more progress on the engine.
Giving people access to the engine can help convey some of the effort they put into making this technology, rather than waiting weeks for updates that only give us a handful of shots and gifs to look at. The combination of help from the community feedback and a solid track record of what the engines updates have been when you release updates to a platform like steam can make the process more consumer involved.
This would also help improve the image of the developers, since progress wouldnt have to be large milestones with many things to show. Whenever an update would come out, no matter how small, the developers would seem much more active from an outward looking inward appearance. Of course, developing a game engine is far beyond what most consider to be complicated, so we know theyre working hard whether we see it or not. It would just be nice to see progress as it happens, rather than in chunks.

By FFT, I believe they are talking about a fast Fourier transform which is a mathematical tool used to break down a signal into a bunch of different component signals.
Im not exactly sure how they plan to use it, but my expectation is that they will treat the water as a waveform and have individual components given different weights at different locations, thus yielding a more varied surface. Just a guess though, i dont know anything about video game design.

honestly, if I have to buy SE2 I want my blueprints to transfer over. do we have any guess of how much it's going to cost if nothing at all?

What I would see as a fitting send off for the SE1 would be an update that had the last of the old blocks that have not had an update in years redone in the newer style they are going with. And honestly I think if it would be a fitting to also release all the DLC blocks for everyone if they gave those of use to did buy the DLC some sort of discount on the SE2.

Honestly, the biggest bottleneck / hurdle of current space engineers is the performance and lag in large multiplayer ( and even single player ) worlds. You can get away with small groups of players, with a lot of restrictions and limitations - but even that's a hit and miss, and there's a huge amount of wasted potential as a result. SE2 can be made to look as good as Star Citizen, but it would all be pointless due to the nature of the game if it compromises on performance. The current level of optimisation and performance is, honestly, the bare minimum of what SE2 to be worthwhile.

What i think about the black skybox is. It is time for mods ^^ It just looks like every other skybox now. SE had Character before. It made it special. but those damn casual players have always something to complain, dont they. At Space Engeneers the last thing i care is Visuals. The building part is what makes the game great. but if they focus on Visuals now, i think the Franchise is gonne to die when SE2 launches. IT wont be able to keep up to the original if they go that way.
