I own two pairs of Hifiman planar headphones, neither are at all "bass heavy", they both have that tight, snappy, controlled bass that goes a bit deep but not super deep. Planars usually aren't tuned that way. Sounds like these IEMs were tuned for more bass performance and extension, which is good if you want more bass, I normally do, but of course you're not gonna get the same soundstage and detail maybe, as full size planar headphones. The good thing is they're more portable, and probably a lot easier to drive.
Got these and the 7hz Timeless. Ended up keeping the Timeless. The bass felt better in the timeless and the top end just felt easier to my ears. The imaging, soundstage, and detail just seemed better to me. They are $60 more but the price difference felt worth it to me. Still agree that S12 are phenomenal for the price!
Nice to see you do wired IEMS. There are a boatload of them out there from seemingly dozens of manufacturers so it certainly can keep you going for as long as you wish on your channel. 👍🏻
i have them for like a 2 months now initially i was disapointed cuz to me it sounded plastically and knife sharp but after sometime it seems like the sharpness is completely gone. idk that im used to it now or it got better but i also have other iems like moondrop aria.. so using them both side by side i can definitley confirm that sharpness is gone. and u also need to have a good fit double flinge eartips does the job for me
I just received my pair of S12 a day ago and I usually like to get 25 hours on any iem before I listen but I just couldn't help myself since they sound so good. If the Recording isn't bright thr S12 are no issue for me at all. But on brighter recordings the treble is a bit zingy. I hope they calm down with more playtime. I'll give them 100 hours. If I keep getting headaches then I know these aren't something I can live with. I did start to experiment with micropore tape over the nozzle screen but I need to dial in the amount since too much coverage veils the treble too much. Too little tape and there's no reduction in treble.
@@Dingdongwitchisdead That would be a firm and resounding YES! I got my S12 for $118 and they’re simply a must own iem! If the treble is too bright cover 60% of the nozzle with 3M Micropore tape. Any drug store will carry it if you don’t already own some.

@@wadec6799 I definitely hear ya! I've tried Spinfit and MoonDrop Spring Tips with the S12, but didn't like them at all. The stock silicone tips seem to work the best for me so far as I felt like the foam tips took too much of the detail away. I might try some double flange tips down the road, but right now I'm plenty happy 👍

Do you eq the treble down a bit? I love my 5k. I'm waiting for my z12s to arrive. I think I would like the timber of the Timeless more but with eq always at the ready I think the savings are worth a try. My ikko oh1s are still my go-to iem.
@@johnpeterson99 Yeah I definitely had to EQ down the treble at first, but then over time I started to slowly bring it back up. Not sure if I just got used to it or if it was the mythical "burn-in." I also had to boost the bass quite a bit to get it to my liking (and I'm not even a basshead), but you probably won't have to worry about that as much since you're going with the Z12.
Very happy that you have also started reviewing iems as well, I always prefer them for pure sound quality and gaming (because of mic quality and lag free), you should review best iems under 100$ 👍🏼
There is one answer for best IEM under $100 and that is the Moondrop Aria. There are new contenders in the sub $100 range, but the Aria is just too well tuned and priced.
Run my S12's with AZ09 Pro's (AptX and in "power" mode) or sometimes with BTR5/cables (LDAC). Luv these IEM's. They scale really well with a bit more power AND I can EQ the hell out of them too. Today, at its price, the Dioko is new competition...I just cannot go for the design of the Dioko (too big and flashy for me).
@@werelion2893 I initially did use the 2 pin adapters ($13 for set) sourced from AliExpress* but found them having less than reliable/secure connection because the male pins were too large in diameter and too short. Insertion of the pins was too snug for my liking. I decided to mod the AZ09 Pro's by shaving 2~3mm from the leading edge of the silicone-rubber QDC shroud, revealing a standard pin length to provide a neat and secure coupling with the B-pin interface of the IEM (e.g. S12, Olina, T3+). This set I use with all of my IEM's having the standard B-pin connection. Mod took me just ~3 minutes with a razor/exacto knife.
