Consider climbing out on a 12ft or a 16ft long joist that's 3 inches deep, smaller than a 2x4. Notch it imperfectly with a portable saw, as one does, and it's more like a 2.5" 2x3. I eventually realized that the only thing holding those stairs together for light use is the stiffness added by the risers and stringers trying to bend in opposing directions like a torsion box. Nailing pattern better be tight, and hope you don't mind squeaks. It's rough that the biggest things you can get out of a big box store in my area are either a 11 1/4" 2x12 or a 11 7/8" LVL

When I made mine, I used 12" and works fine.

2”x12” is my preferred stringer choice

Given is the measurement of a hand railing for staircase. This design is made up
of 1 x 2 in. Tubular bar. If the standard length of a Tubular bar is 19 ft, how many tubular bars is
needed if you will create this handrail for four (4) staircases?

Just multiply the amount per step by the amount of steps.

How about $40 per board difference between a 2x10 and 2x12 16' long? Doing a long staircase myself consisting of 14 steps. Plan on doing 4 stringers for a 42" wide staircase.
