Icelandics should do well in South Dakota. They are hardy and can thrive on forage that others do not do as well on. They may need shade in the summer if you are located in an area that gets very hot.

Thank you very much for this wonderful and down to earth video. It's fun to see that you also suddenly get some surprise lambs early on. Nature really always lives its own life, for better or for worse. The course of life with little lambs is a roller coaster where the path between happiness and death can be so short. Tova, I'm so sorry for the loss of your baby lambs. I had to stop to wipe away my tears for you, the two mamas and sole sibling! He seemed to look for his brother but quickly took some straw to comfort himself and let you know he would manage somehow. This was a bitter sweet vlog with you mourning a loss without the warm comfort of Mathias. We know his course on regenerative farming is an education he can not afford to go without. What's marvelous is that you stay strong and carry on as always. Love your garden illustration! Yes, we too are wondering what to plant, and where, with cool days hanging on here in the midwest states. Loved seeing you and family spend time over great meals! So sorry for your loss Tova, your a strong woman , I have been watching your channel for years now , it has really helped me relax and I learn a lot from watching and listening , I live in Northern Canada, I have three grown children but was not able to have them naturally so I really enjoyed also being able to witness when you brought Ivar into the world, you and your husband are so loving and Ivar is so cute and intelligent , I wish you all the best, I share your videos at times with others too who also said to me that through the Pandemic watching your videos helped them cope with lock down here in Canada, we are in Ontario , it was really a hard time for the kids too. Thank You for sharing your life with us and your skills and knowledge , such a blessing.❤

Even though it’s part of farm life, I’m sorry you had to go through the loss of those lambs. Life is precious and makes the heart sad when it is lost. Especially with the little ones. You showed great strength Tova!! Love to see Ivar being so tender with the baby. He’s such a special little boy. Great parents he has!!

Oh my Tova you are such a strong woman. You gave a natural birth yourself & did it so beautifully. We farm women know the highs & lows of raising animals. The highs outnumber the sad times. I have watched baby goats die, it's heartbreaking. You are dear, sensitive, and strong; there is nothing weak about that. Thank you for this video; I hope your garden produces an abundance of food.
You will become more confident as you age, at least I have. I am 72 I say and do the things that please me. I try to be always kind ect. Negative emotion is a waste of energy. I do not worry, the universe always provides in an unexpected way. I strive to improve the person within. Keep of the good work.

Dear Mathias, I can really imagine, how you feel about coming home to the place of childhood, you are talking about. Next year, I will be at my place ( in my school, where I had been more than 30 years ago) and will sing there in a classical concert and read passages from my book" winterreise". That will be very emotional, to be there and to see old friends.
Dear Tova, it seems to be hard to think about your garden, while winter is going on, your fence has collapsed, and you are so sad about the problems with your lambs, but your life is filled with sense and joy aswell. I like that so much and I am full of respect about that.

Tova your words were lovely and I liked seeing you both in another part of your life, meaning off the farm. It is so good that Mathias is learning about keeping the farm healthy. You both are a super team.

We always strip the ewe's tests (nipples) as soon after they lamb to clear the wax plug out. Makes if fat easier for the kids to nurse. And soak the kid's umbilical cord in iodine quickly. They can easily absorb bacteria off the straw and get sick or die. Also, in cold weather we frequently bring the lambs in a heated area 1 at a time and dry them off well. Sometimes use a hair drier to get them dry and toasty. The biggest health risk to lambs is a draft. And as soon as they can stand fairly stable we make sure they get to the teat and nurse. It can be frustrating with some of them, but it makes a huge difference on my farm. I'm sure you know all this. But sometimes 1 little trick can be the difference in keeping the lamb alive. On very weak lambs we have sometimes kept them in the cellar overnight after they get a good dose of colostrum from mom, and if they refuse to nurse we have saved icecube sized portions of colostrum in the freezer from a mom that had previously lost a kid for emergency use and feed the weak lamb with an eyedropper. Hope at least something in here might help you out. Best of luck.

✨Tova and Mathias, I think the three lovely lambs that passed away, were to cold in body temperature that first night they were born. Build a small newborn/mama warming shed for future births. That way their temperatures will be warm enough to survive! ✨

When our lambs were born early and nature and time was against them we would place them in a cardboard box next to the stove to ward off the cold, until they were warmed through and dry enough to withstand the cold shock for what are basically infants, it saved many good lambs which would have died otherwise.

I may not understand the language, but I do understand the emotions given in the vocal and the music. I got tears. Precious little lambs. It is never easy, when sad things happen, no matter how long you are farming. Sometimes little sheep are very fragile and things just happen. Often for the best. I think you are doing a wonderful job!

My what a busy time you had Tova while Mathias was away! Thank you for sharing both the joy and the pain of the life cycle on the farm. I'm sure it was difficult but you took the necessary steps. It seems you both are very devoted to doing all you can to give the animals the best chance to be healthy and survive, but of course you don't have control over all of the eventualities.
