If you've loved Castlevania ever since the beginning you should know how much of a badass Maria is as a child, and how much more of one she grows up to become. She was introduced in Rondo/Dracula X, the fifth main entry. You calling her a joke just reveals yourself to be the joke.
Yes, I explained in my voice-commentated version but should have explained in the description for this video: at that point in the game, Maria's birds do literally 1 damage to death when he's in his dark phase and the animals do nothing at all. The only way to make it feasible while still only playing as Maria would have been to farm levels, which I didn't want to do since that would invalidate the challenge of the rest of the run.
