JET AIRLINER is NOT written by Steve Miller. Rather it was written by Mr Paul Pena. I once heard that when Steve Miller went to a music store to buy a synthesizer, then the latest development in music instruments, he only wanted one if it also made hissing and wind noises ...hence the birth of the songs fly like and eagle and jet airliner !
About three years before my voice was ever heard on the radio in New York City, I went over to my friend's house one morning. It was a Saturday. The Doo Wop song Steve is referring to is Vernon Green's "The Letter". According to an interview with Green, puppetutes was "A term I coined to mean a secret paper-doll fantasy figure [thus puppet], who would be my everything and bear my children."
I bought my first Steve Miller album 'Sailor' in the 60s' when I was at school. 50 years on its still a fantastic album. Overdrive is an absolutely killer track (Boz Scaggs I think was in the band) Rock n Me wow!! Just brilliant

_The word is probably a corruption of-or imagined variation on-the word "puppetutes", which was itself a coinage, originated by Vernon Green at the age of 14. Green included the word "puppetutes" in the lyrics of doo-wop song "The Letter" (1954), as performed by him and The Medallions. "The Letter" also included another original coinage, "pismotality". Presumably in homage to the Medallions' song, Steve Miller used the nonce words "epismetology" and "pompatus" in the lyrics of two of his other songs, "Enter Maurice" and "The Conversation", one of which is, like "The Letter", in spoken-word style._

I ABSOLUTELY LOVE the fact the Eminem let us know Steve Miller is alive in 2024!... Man, fame is weird, 'cause now everyone knows who Steve Miller is, but they still don't know what he looks like. I want to be famous like Steve Miller, but I don't want anyone to recognize me." 😂
Such a likeable guy. I don't think anybody knew what the hell he was saying back then, or what the word meant. It didn't matter either, because he sang it convincingly, as if he knew precisely what he was talking about. And that is how a number one hit is born!

Steve played at our corporate event in Las Vegas last September. Don't tell anyone, but it was the highlight of the trip, and one of the highlights of my Life!!!
Did you see the lights As they fell all around you Did you hear the music Serenade from the stars Wake up, wake up Wake up and look around you We're lost in space And the time is our own Whoa, whoa Did you feel the wind As it blew all around you Did you feel the love That was in the air Wake up, wake up Wake up and look around you We're lost in space And the time is our own Whoa, whoa The sun comes up And it shines all around you You're lost in space And the earth is your own Whoa, whoa Whoa
Miller stole that line from another doowop song, "Lovey Dovey," which was a hit for The Clovers. The song's writer sued Miller, and because of that Miller has to share song writing credits and royalties for "The Joker" with the writer of "Lovey Dovey." As far as I know, Miller does NOT have to share royalties with the guy who came up with "pompitus of love," ho ho.
Hey all you guys that were born in the 90's... You know that song Fly Like an Eagle sung by Seal in Space Jam.... Yeah that was originally written and performed by The Steve Miller Band. Check it out
So many kids are into this music it would blow your mind. I was born in 76, my 18 year old college freshman came to me all the time about a cool old band. I would proudly blow the dust off of my CD collection and take the boy through a journey....
Actually it was written by Paul Pena, a blind blues artist. Steve gave him royalties for the rights to record what was an unreleased version of the song.
Steve Miller and Boz Scaggs were classmates together at the St. Marks School in Dallas. Both went on to form the Steve Miller Band. So many great songs from Steve Miller. His theme song will probably always be "The Joker" and his alias, Maurice. The 1976 album, FLY LIKE AN EAGLE is superb. We are all slipping, slipping into the future. Great interview.
OK! I'm googling that song to find out what the word 'pompatus' really is since he misheard it.... I just did, and the song is full of nonsense words...The other two were:"pismotality" and "caremily" The singer has something of a Jamaican accent..
Steve is responsible for the greatest r&r lyric of all time "You're the cutest thing I ever did see,,,,,,, really love your peaches wanna shake your tree" ...
I underrated him for most of my life until I listened to the early albums. He is so relatable and down to earth. So different than his onstage persona.
that was nice and honest of Steve Miller to acknowledge that the word "popitutes" (however that's spelled) was taken from an old doowop song. The song he is referring to is called "The Letter" by The Medallions. In fact, the lead singer, Vernon Green, used two words in the song that were "made up" - "popitutes" and "pisbotality" search for the song on TH-cam and take a listen!
He's quite personable for a guy who was always so low key. Somehow I always thought he would be moody and brooding, but he seems like quite the normal guy.
I just got to see him here and Florida a little bit ago. It's hard for me to imagine that this is the first time I got to see him perform....a whole lifetime...and still amazing and fun. Russell Crowe likes to sing too he should have him up on stage keep on a Rockin me
Sometimes it’s harder to find, and look past certain new sounds and mindsets in the music industry, but there’s still great music being made today. I’m not denying that things have changed, and I’m only 22 so I definitely have less nostalgia for older bands but there’s good new stuff out there.

Wake up and look around you
We're lost in space
And the time is our own
Whoa, whoa
Did you feel the wind
As it blew all around you
Did you feel the love
That was in the air
Wake up, wake up
Wake up and look around you
We're lost in space
And the time is our own
Whoa, whoa
The sun comes up
And it shines all around you
You're lost in space
And the earth is your own
Whoa, whoa
Whoa
I really love your peaches. Wanna shake your tree.
Worked for me on date night #1, 1976 to 1981!
1975 or 76. Toronto Exhibition Satdium. My first concert: The Beach Boys. Steve Miller Band. Journey and Pablo Cruise.
The man is a legend.
He seems very humble. Love him. I’m so glad he still plays sometimes. Watch his interviews.
Fly like an Eagle and all the sound effects he came up with in this cool house in Novato way up on a hill, very inspirational for music.
No kiddin
@@jk-76 - that's because pretty much all music made these days is shit.
So proud to be able to say he's a fellow Wisconsinite...go Buckey!!
Absolutely love Steve Miller!!!!!👍🎸🎙❤
He copped the term from Vernon Green. Song called “The Letter” by the Medallions. Good song
Followed closely by "You got the peaches, I got the cream..." 😁
"Puppetuse of Love" was in a song by Vernon Green and the Medallions called "The Letter"
Steve Miller is Awesome!
Incredible. Best rendition I've seen. First live show, Chicago 1976, and now dozens of times. See you May 1st, Scottsdale.
Incredibly warm and wonderful human.
I just saw Steve Miller tonight in Delaware! Awesome ❤
Yeah Jimmy Steve Miller will always be amazing and a legend in his own right and will always be loved and highly admired & reveard by all true rockers
Steve Miller is great.
So many great songs I had nearly forgotten about. Thanks Steve Miller! Somebody give that man a cheeseburger!!
My teen years was full of Steve Miller Band's music! LOve them!
Love so much about Steve Miller
I underrated him for most of my life until I listened to the early albums. He is so relatable and down to earth. So different than his onstage persona.
that was nice and honest of Steve Miller to acknowledge that the word "popitutes" (however that's spelled) was taken from an old doowop song. The song he is referring to is called "The Letter" by The Medallions. In fact, the lead singer, Vernon Green, used two words in the song that were "made up" - "popitutes" and "pisbotality" search for the song on TH-cam and take a listen!
Omg-that was an amazing interview ! And Steve Miller looks fabulous (lucky Janice ) !
Man, oh man, I still associate his songs with hot summer days in 1979. What a summer!
Russell Crowe likes to sing too he should have him up on stage keep on a Rockin me
The fact that Jimmy Kimmel has Steve Miller on only proves the point that there was once a Great era of music and it is gone for now
And Jimmy Fallon had him on too...............
Sometimes it’s harder to find, and look past certain new sounds and mindsets in the music industry, but there’s still great music being made today. I’m not denying that things have changed, and I’m only 22 so I definitely have less nostalgia for older bands but there’s good new stuff out there.
Saw him once in murfreesboro tn in 76 77 .great show .his music was a great part of my teens.a great band and Steve was a good songwriter and singer need more like him
I just seen Steve Miller 2 nights ago here in San Antonio TX he is amazing great music
