"Writing about characters you love, makes you love writing" wow, the whole idea of fanfiction! I think you can then learn to love your own characters.

Fanfic is just straight up fun. And in the process of writing different stories for a fandom, ideas for original stories can come up. The current novel I’m working on started out as an AU for a fanfic, and as I was plotting it out, I was like, “Huh, this setting and plot is so far off from the source material, and would make a great original story.” So now, it’s That One Big Original Thing I’m currently working on.

This is a really great topic, especially for young writers. There's such a stigma against writing FF, but honestly, it's so integral for growth as a writer, to help hone in on voice, identifying what you love to write about, etc. So many "mainstream" authors have written FF too! Victoria Aveyard, Sarah J. Maas, and we all know the story about E.L. James' writing a FF for Twilight that ultimately turned into the Fifty Shades series. It also gets your writing out there and to get feedback from peers and readers. Plus, it's totally anonymous if you want it to be.
Kate, I LOVE your "Writer in Vermont" series. I definitely looked up Amtrak routes up that way to Woodstock this morning :D THE WRITER RETREAT 2021 WILL HAPPEN.
I love both Kate and Abbie's content and definitely felt the void from not having any videos last week. Glad to see you both back! Thanks for the encouragement, as always!

I’m a short story and prose poetry writer and I’m currently working on a fan fiction. I used to write fanfics when I was around 12, but then I went out into the “real world” and took on some very ambitious projects. After some time, I got completely burnt out and I felt like I couldn’t write anymore. For about 7 years. Lately I fell in love with a very stupid movie franchise and as a form of maladaptive daydreaming, I imagined how to make it deeper, give the characters a way to express their emotions without the comedy restricting them. And POOF, I found myself writing it down, falling in love with the craft all over again. I think fan fiction is a great way to keep creating while still staying in your comfort zone, without the added pressure of “I may want to release that someday”. I’m so thankful for my friend who basically bullied me into writing these ideas down, because I don’t think I could’ve gotten back into writing in any other way.

I’m a writer as well. But it’s more of a hobby. I’ve recently been writing fanfiction and it’s really made me gain confidence in my writing reading people praise my stories. Fanfiction is fun and allows you explore your imagination.

I’ve had some fanfic ideas for a long time now. They got put on hold because all the genus original ideas that where born from the brainstorming process came spiraling out in this sea of beautiful chaos and now I’m riding that chaos and owning it. I’m working on a series of short stories about some of my original characters to get these really strong ideas and feelings out on paper. Then I will be able to do those fanfics justice when I’m not being distracted by such powerful ideas that belong in something truly original.

...a little late to the conversation, but thank you ladies! This was really good. I loved the part about musicians playing and practicing other peoples music. You had a lot of good points. I do believe I wouldn't be where I am without fanfic, even though I'm net yet published.

I was talking to a friend about my fanfiction and she said "50 shades and the after series began as fanfiction right? Maybe you'll end up published." No. Mine are in character.
Edit: to be fair, I do see some similarities between Christian and Anna and Edward and Bella. But I have many other problems with that book, mostly how much I wanted to dismember the 'inner Goddess'

Okay, I know that this video is several years old now and you will probably never see this, but I was also homeschooled in the 90's and the Her Interactive Nancy Drew games were MY JAM! I would beg my parents to go get the newest release when each one came out and I had saved up enough chore points. To this day I still have things that I quote and reference from them that only I or my little sister really understand. Which was your favorite? For me it was Treasure in the Royal Tower, but I also loved Stay Tuned for Danger and The Haunted Carousel. Looking back on it, The Curse of Blackmoor Manor was actually a really great mystery, but I couldn't play it after dark because it was so scary it gave me nightmares and Jane really creeped me out, haha!
I have loved and appreciated your channels since I discovered you both in late 2021, but after this video I feel an extra special kinship with you now! 😁

Long before the French MySims fan-fiction, I used to write fan-fiction on A4 paper with my favorite Video Game characters, and changing their personality because I focused on their stat.
It was later on that I learn the term fan-fiction and after watching drama reading on FF and rant videos, I have bad relationship with them. So, why I write FF now? I though that my poetic style prevent me to be on video (and because I have a FictionPress account) but then Brendanial came by. Though I am both happy and surprised, my relationship with FF still doesn't change.
Writing on computer is so accessible that they abuse it. We end up with just assembly of words that try to be substantial. That why reading digital story let to be desire.
Also, fan-fiction is writing like a classic novel and their are ideas that fit better on screen than on text. That make me believe writing a story based on a series from another medium is difficult.
Then I read Star Trek fan-fictions because of their rich fandom history and I start to change my view on fan-fiction. I wonder, if fan-faction have bad reputation, why we couldn't say the same thing from fan-art? Double standard much?
I started to build this philosophy "When I am reading fan-fiction, it's like I am reading their existence and that what make me happy" but it's hard to hold. Of course, I am not forced like fan-fiction but I believe there is a way to redeem their image.
The main reason of fan-fiction bad reputation is the load of shipping, yaoi, yuri, smut and so on. Even shipping character that aren't mean to be together. Should we say they are fan, for using characters as toys of satisfaction? I don't mind for personal goal. It's disrespectful to the author intention and they call themself fan? Gad damn it!
Alternative Timeline/Universe is a good way to explore but depending on the intention, they don't agree with the original idea if it is a fix-fic or a response of misunderstanding.
When you write, write, have the guts! Don't let your inside voice stop you!

I had no idea the Nancy Drew games were that popular back then . I hadn't played any of them until recently . It became kind of a fun thing to do with my sister during quarantine . Someone should tell Nancy that asking all of the people in the game if they killed someone is a surefire way to blow her cover . 😂🙄

I'm currently working on a fanfic and let's just say its going okay. I am kinda struggling a little bit..... I like to plan out my stories, come with ideas, and brainstorm before I write. I also like getting to know my characters like coming up with their personalities, their backstory, and goals etc. I type most of this information on my phone or on google docs. I am more of a planner when it comes to writing fanfiction. Sometimes I can be a panser 😂😂

Fan fiction gets too much of a bad rep. Yes, a lot of fan fics out there are just bad writing but a lot of them out there are breathtakingly beautiful and structured very well along with masterful dialogue. Take inspiration from those.

No. Fan fiction is a poor substitute for reading good literature. Emulate the masters of the craft.
