Darnold will have his best season of his career in Minnesota. Watch.
He seems like he learned a lot playing on different teams - and the time on SF should help him with another good Off.- minded HC - he has weapons like he did on SF but the 49ers went with Purdy. He's a good replacement for Cousins - still a strong arm but now with mobility. Hopefully, he can stay healthy and not get hurt. The Vikings should be okay with him at QB.
Folks don't realise that when Darnold finished out the 2022 season for the Panthers with a 4-2 record, he nearly got them into the playoffs, and his throwing accuracy was 77.1%. At the same time Kirk went 13-4 with the Vikes with a throwing accuracy of 76.5%. That 4-2 finish included a 20 point thrashing of the Lions during their 8-1 finish. Darnold was the 1. Baker Mayfield started 2022 for the Panthers, going 1-6, and Bryce Young went 2-15 the following season. Sam was flashing his ability - but few people outside Shanahan and KOC were taking notice.

Darnold has great mechanics, and this may possibly be the best offense he’s ever played with Aaron Jones, Jetts, Hockenson and Addison.
Ngl…. Vikings may be sneaky good. Darnold has shown flashes before and Justin Jefferson will make things ALOT easier for him
And KOC as we just saw. The other question is how much of Cousins resurgence was because of Jettas and KOC, and will he look as good without them?
The ball just leaves his hand so effortlessly.
And he doesn’t have hockenson or one of the best receiving backs in the nfl, I think we have a reason to have hope

Sam played great. There's no doubt about it, but this was a preseason game, and he will have to transfer that measure of confidence, poise, and alertness into a real game

I enjoy educated creators like you, who explain plays well, take the time to be thorough, and bring clarity to those of us not as nuanced.
Born in the 612 in 1967, I, like many, have had purple heartbreaks for decades. J.J. getting injured seemed just SO Vikings. Ergo, with diminished expectations, any and all positive impressions of Sam’s potential lift my spirits, some. I like this squad.

I don't think that's strictly true. The comms were patchy, not absent.
Point is, he had to run back-and-forth to the sideline multiple times that drive vs. Oakland's #1s on D. He didn't panic and call timeout either.

Sam is actually legit. He’s had terrible coaching, multiple offenses, up until he went to 49ers, he’s staying in the shanahan coaching tree, which is beneficial for him. I think he’s going to be good. 👍

I hope that you are correct about SD leading the Vikings to the playoffs, however given how good the Packers, Lions, and Bears have looked so far this season I doubt that will be the case. Granted the preseason performance isn’t always an indication of regular season success!

this is already the most talent Darnold has had to work with. Excellent play caller in KOC as well. sneaky great pickup if he can keep turnovers low.

He’s a backup and his play so far proved that. No hate or so but that’s what it is. Let’s see what he can do this year
To be clear, he was a backup only last season.
The previous 5 seasons, he was still viewed as a Starter.
Now he's on the edge of being a Full-time Backup should he fail this season OR if re-establish himself as a Starting-Caliber QB once again if he plays well.
I'd love to be convinced that the Vikings could possibly not suck but it'll take some games in the regular season to push me in that direction
At 1:50 this is a 100% check down pass from Kirk. Loved that Darnold took a little more risk on that throw.
Hopefully for Vikings fans he does not fall back to seeing ghosts out there. He seems to be a serviceable 2rd string QB because of his previous starting experience. If he struggles or gets injured they do have Nick Mullens who showed to he could be good game manger in San Francisco.
Darnold played really well. He was pulling out a lot of things to get the coverage making the wrong first step. It def boosts his skill set when you have that good of an offensive line, along with a stellar receiving core to go with it. If he continues to play with this level of poise in accuracy, along with that defense, they should have a decent record.
There was absolutely no pass rush on all of those plays - which won't be the case with all starters playing against the Vikings offensive unit come regular season. We'll see how things shake-out then. Can't put any real stock in preseason games when QBs have all the time in the world to throw because they're playing against a lesser defensive unit, but when guys are also not playing all-out and trying to get hurt.
I LOVED this video and how you broke down the routes and showed his progression along with his foot work and decision making. Thank you for breaking this down for those of us who don't necessarily put these plays under a microscope. Like you said, I will be fascinated to see what Sam Darnold is able to do with JJ running those routes. My hope is that he is able to improvise under pressure and PLEASEEEEE be better in the pocket than fricking Cousins! What a waste of over 100 m dollars that he fleeced from the Vikings management! So far...I think he has shown more mobility in just one preseason game than we saw in over 5 years of Kirko....
I do think Darnold will surprised people after sitting out for a year or 2 to learn. He’s like 26/27 now, KOC will help him a lot. I mean look at Dobbs and Mullens last year lol
We're in for a treat of a season. Everybody is looking elsewhere in the now, once again, IMO, toughest division in the NFL. It won't be easy but the Vikes don't have many holes, providing injuries don't create them. There is a ton of competency on this team/in this organization. I'm plenty happy with Darnold and while it took an injury to stomp out the QB controversy, it is a blessing in disguise for the start of the season. SKOL!

I saw a colossal bust of a QB throw two nice passes in a preseason game. To see one 3 point drive and say that you expect Darnold to play as well as Cousin did is comical and shows you really don’t have a clue.
I believe miracles and wish JJ will healing fast and come back end of this years. Good things happen to good person like JJ because his Fans waiting for him a fast return.

Subscribed! I've played Madden NFL up to 08. There was VG Sports that sold e-booklets showing the different teams plays, and some specialty offenses that highlighted certain concepts. One of the resources I used during my "learning football" phase is USA Football to see how coaches train their players. The tree and gap assignments helped me learn more. Now in 22, 23, and 24, Madden has concepts as part of the play calling, even tutorials on how to master the run, pass, and RPO. I saw this video, and while I like to see Sam Darnold succeed, it provided me with more understanding of the route and route progression. When I see a complex route such as Destroy in Singleback Trips, I always ask myself "Who do I check first"? while the above video doesn't have that complex route set, it did give me an understanding of WR leverage vs DB. Thanks for taking the time to build these videos. I always missed Playbook with Brian Billick!

Sam Darnold is gonna put up MVP like numbers! He's the most talented QB who has never been named to Pro Bowl. Plus no JJ McCarthy trying to sabotage him as he's out for the season.
I hope JJ ends up with a full recovery. But Sam may have an easier time focusing on what is in front of him if he does not have to worry about the next QB coming up from behind him to take his job

I wouldn't be surprised at all if he goes wild and we sign him further or wiggle some sort of extension to get a trade.
I'll add that with Darnold, they have endless possibilities. With JJ they could possibly get to playoffs, but he doesn't have that NFL level exp to complete the push. He would be the first to win a SB as a Rookie QB so ... those odds are pretty obvious as LOWEST OF LOW.

the ability to throw a pass from the protected pocket in football is not complicated most anyone with an arm can do this but when the pocket collapses which is the true power of a very good team that makes this happen a QB that can deal with this and throw and complete is a championship team the other success you see is a receiver that can get open and catch anything thrown at him allowing for more player to defend the pocket the trade off as a QB always is how much defense do you need as this opens players that are not defended

How does sitting on the sideline help a QB?
Darnold has the best weapons he's ever played with in the NFL this season. I believe he would've been successful for the 49er's if he ever got the opportunity but Purdy kept him off the field. I think he'll play fine in 2024 but 2025 is JJ McCarthy's year. I don't think the playoffs are in the Vikings possible outcomes though. The NFC North has three other good teams. Detroit and Green Bay both should playoff teams and Chicago got much better on offense. That's okay this year was all about getting back on track with the salary cap and next year we'll see what they can put together.
I’m sorry but I said this going into this season Sam Darnold will out play JJ. JJ talented but he really need to work on his ball placement at the next level, let him sit and learn honestly I think his injury might be a blessing in disguise. I live in jersey so I have watched darnold when he would play on TV I thought he actually played really well and consistently considering his jets team. I was an advocate for not giving him up for Zak Wilson because I thought darnold was better and more experienced. I was calling JJ zak Wilson 2.0 but I think if he sits and learns especially works on ball placement he will be a top talent (I wouldn’t say top 10 but maybe top 15 qb eventually) but he does need to work on a lot mostly ball placement.
Btw I’m I giants fan, so don’t think I just love the jets. my friends watch them and I told them about darnold he’s good for the team. I see him in the baker situation this year, also loved baker as a qb since he came into the league. Vikings you got a good QB that should bring you above .500 but watch out cause we giants coming week 1 😤 after that game I’ll root for ya

Darnold looked pretty good. I believe he will be 6-8 wins this coming year. He strikes me as a streaky QB for some reason. Darnold is no slouch.
If it's 6-8 wins but in ALL the games, Sam looks good, that will go a long way toward showing everyone he CAN be a Starting QB.
But I think the golden number to make this a slam-dunk is 10 wins and perhaps a playoff-appearance.
@@oel734 Yeah, they could go 10 wins. To be honest, I have no clue how Darnold is going to play out. If he really balls out, the Vikes are going to have a very solid team if they stay healthy. It's just very hard to predict Darnolds game, which will obviously dictate how their season ends.

I suspect that Darnold might be a Jared Goff type of QB. Goff is not a Rogers, Brady, or Mahomes type who can raise his team. Goff is a solid QB when the infrastructure is there. Goff is looking good in Detroit because he has good coaches and teammates. I suspect that Darnold could be like that too. We have to wait and see. If he is, he will get PAID next year.

He got sucked into the perpetual losing tradition of the Jets, whose only win was in a pre-merger game. Namath "predicted it" which most of us think the AFL and NFL fixed the game. Darnold is an example of the curse of the draft. Baker Mayfield? To a Browns team that was sure to destroy his career. And the guy who went to the ex-Tom Brady Patriots. Winning teams draft low. They get winners like the Rams did in a brilliant trade.
If he looks like slinging Sammy this year, he will get seriously PAID somewhere next year.
