How to easily install a Shimano 11/12 speed quick link without tools

  • In this video, I show the process I use to install a Shimano 11 or 12 speed quick-link. These quick-links require much more force to click into place than all previous quick-links from any brand. I've seen lots of folks struggle with installing these particular quick links, as they are hard to engage with a chain link tool.

    I love videos like this. No nonsense, no silly vlog taking me on your grocery shopping trip first, just straight to the point and even showed a trick to lock it in place easier instead of using plyers. Thanks Joey.

      Update: I just did this on my fixed gear. Worked like a charm! However, I forgot that I have little metal spikes on the underside of my pedals to help with grip when out of the straps. I now have 3 bleeding holes in my hand... but my chain is installed so that's good!

      I'm glad you liked the video! Sorry you had to tear up your hand to get it set. You do have to use a pretty hard smack to get it set as you found out! If I'm setting one on a bike with sharp pedals, I like to "pad it up" by wrapping a shop rag or towel around the pedal a few times. I've definitely torn my hand up a time or two as well....

    Thanks for sharing this tip. It worked perfectly for me ... once I figured out the one thing you did but didn't say - the quick link MUST be above the chainstay. It's obvious once you think about it, but if you're dumb (like me), you'll smack the pedal with the quick link below the chainstay a few times before you figure it out. LOL.

    Both sides of my Quick Links have arrows so it does not matter which link you have on the outside because whatever link you use they are always correct from the front and wrong looking from the back side!

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes, both sides are the same. If Shimano and SRAM both imprint this on the links, it must matter. The arrow should point in the direction of chain travel when looking at the Right or drive side of the bike.

    But how do you remove the chain? I’ve got the pliers and the quick link but I can’t find the link to remove the chain. Any suggestions besides taking it to the bike shop?

    • @JoeyMesa
      @JoeyMesa  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@richardgate1571 modern chains are under tremendous stress when moving up the cassette under load. It took Shimano YEARS of testing to finally come out with their quick link. My guess would be the links hold up better long term in one direction than the other. Why else would they put the effort in to stamp an arrow on it?

    • @basslake8177

      @@JoeyMesa Both quick link bevels are identical to the outside bevels of a chain unlike the chain which has different bevels for inside and outside. In other words there is no wrong way to install them.

      @@basslake8177wow! Surely one of the dumbest comment of this year. - Surely you can switch the direction of the arrow. Just turn the link around. Then under load the link can open.

  • @christocan4710
    @christocan4710 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Yeah, not quite. At least in my case even multiple hard kicks with the foot didn’t “seat” the link. Now I am afraid the chain might have gotten some damages. - People, just get some correct tools to do work that wrongfully done can hurt you.

    • @christocan4710
      @christocan4710 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@JoeyMesa I understand although it is the typical statement. I was hopeful. But first try and did not work. I hit the pedal really forcefully. Much harder than shown. Brand new link. Now it is stuck between the two positions. Hopefully the pliers I ordered will work.
      PS: last year I had that kind of Shimano-Mechanic working on my bike before a race. He had no clue and fixed the bolt of my brakes with approx. 15 nm instead of 8. Didn’t use a torque wrench. Didn’t fix my problem. They care less than you think.
