Thanks for this comprehensive video about setting up a new camera. It has 2 unique points. The first is finding out the highest ISO of one's camera that creates the most acceptable noise level for the user. The second is how much overexposed & underexposed one can shoot photo & videos and then recover the highlights & shadows in post. I've seen them in other reiviewers' videos but nobody has told me to do them when I just purchase a new camera. Great job!

    For all the Sony users:
If you have an a6300 or similar, which use the FW50 batteries, I can suggest the Baxxter alternatives. They are red instead of black which I don't lika haha, but the last the exact same time if not even a bit longer and they cost less than half of the Sony's price.
And I've never had problems using them, neither friends of mine who are using them as well✌🏼

On the note of batteries, even secondary brands that work correctly and are safe usually don’t last as long. So it’s still worth going with the battery made by the camera company.

Hey! Can you discuss more the base iso of the canon R?
I have the R, but I also have a fuji xt3. I noted on the fuji if I shoot at iso 640 and set the dr400 dynamic range, I get TREMENDOUS dynamic range with a small cost to noise in the shadows... but fewer blown hilights despite having a “base iso” of 160.
Looking for a similar mode on the R.
Talking raw still shooting here, not video.
    Thx!

Hi, lost with all these offers in this market...I like your videos and I don’t know if you can taking time to give me and advice. I have and old Nikon d5000 with a very crisp 35 mm 1.8 lense. But I would like to bring something with me, even when i do my jogging, to take picture of interesting views in my neighbourhood, especially architectural elements, garden, etc. I want a viewfinder. I know that the choice is huge but you have and idea ? It could be a zoom camera ( I miss so much my very old Nikon Coolpix 4500. I was blown away by the pictures I succeeded to take). So, easy to carry, viewfinder, crisp image, and (no choice for now) affordable. Thank you and have a good summer !!!

I’m confused about base ISO. Your description seems to suggest it is not the lowest ISO? For example the EOS R’s lowest ISO is 100. Is that not the base iso?

    • @stalman
      @stalman  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

It‘a very confusing. You’re lowest ISO is be 100, and for photos that’s all that matters. But if you shoot videos in LOG, any ISO below 400 will throw away a lot of dynamic range.

    When I buy a new camera and/or a new lens, I ...
    1. Perform test shots under controlled conditions. For example, during test shots under controlled conditions with a new 28mm perspective control lens, I discovered that there was too much barrel distortion to use this lens for architecture.
    2. Perform test shots in the field. For example, I took a new 28-200mm lens on a sports assignment with a 180mm prime lens as a backup. I discovered that at the 200mm focal length, the zoom performed more like a 150mm lens.
    3. Keep good notes on the performance of the new camera/lens. For example, I have a permanent note in my files to never buy another variable focus zoom lenses because I discovered that it was too difficult to use with studio flash because it was too difficult to calculate the correct flash exposure when the f/stop changed while zooming.
    4. Use the new camera/lens as a secondary camera/lens while on an assignment. For example, I was using a new micro 4/3 camera for wedding candids when it failed for the third time during the short time I owned it. After the wedding, I replaced the micro 4/3 with an APS-C mirrorless camera.
    5. Use the new camera/lens as a primary camera/lens while on an assignment but have a secondary camera/lens just in case. For example, during a wedding, I discovered that my new camera was not compatible with a few of my older lenses. I had to resort to my secondary camera to use those older lenses.

Favorite lenses on the c70? For my workflow (action sports photography) I'm taking advantage of the super 35 crop and not using the speed booster. I'm actually really interested in / happy with the compact sizes of the rf glass so far.

“Don’t buy a variable aperture lens”. Maybe, if all of your viewers are professional photographers (I am not) or they have 700-1000$ to spend. If you are skilled enough in photography you can do miracles even with a kit lens. Anything more expensive is for pro usage only. With the rest of your points I totally agree.
