I was at both races. Was so amped up during both races and so happy to see them both win. I've seen so many failed attempts to win the triple crown as well. Since a triple crown winner has only emerged 13% of the time in the last 100 years only 5% of the time during my lifetime; I appreciated both performances so much. Who knows, the next triple crown winner might be in another 37 years. Appreciate each one because they are so rare; and both of these horses are amazing.
Justify is a great horse, but in my estimation, American Pharoah is by far the best. At the end, the video shows Pharoah leaving Justify In the dust by 2 lengths! Pharoah is a very special horse-personality-wise and otherwise!
Justify actually ran the three triple crown races faster on cumulative time than American Pharoah with a total time of 6 minutes 28 seconds and 11 fractions. AP ran it in 6 minutes 28 seconds and 51 fractions. AP ran the faster Derby and Bekmont but Justify ran a smoking Preakness and this gave him the edge in total time
Dee G you’re talking about fractions for God sake. They ran the three races at the same speed but AP ran fast in 2/3 races. Both incredible horses it’ll be another decade or more before another TC winner.

Just a need for context ...no negativity. Justify crown is one of the worst last 10 attempts. Even horses that got beat ran better than they did..it all comes down to your competition... that's a fact.
Pharoah is going to be considered "special", he brought us the triple crown win that everyone had been waiting for, for so long. He's not any more or less special than any other triple crown winner though, the timing of his win was just better. The only truly superior triple crown winner is Secretariat, the rest of them are just really great champions and equals.
Justify had 3 difficult tracks to run on during his triple crown accomplishment. That's says he is more than just an iron horse. This horse had great intelligence and had a knack of staying calm in such difficult conditions.
Always nice to see the 2 Triple Crowns of my life. Justify I watched on TV while visiting my grandma in Florida, and AP I saw in person, first horse race I've been to (true story; we were sitting in the clubhouse section on the far left, and some people took pictures of us, because one person said we were the best dressed there, also true).
‘Pharaoh went 2 seconds faster, but he went too easy in the beginning. Justify went quicker in the early stages, but he was not asked as hard as ‘Pharoah at the end. Both are champs forever!
macheterosforvr when they get into the stretch right around the Belmont sign pause the video then watch in slow motion you see the 2 seconds. Ap's past the park sign jusifys around the T
Gel B, no-one said champions of the world, you've added the word world all by yourself, they're champions alright but thus far only in the USA. I don't suppose there will ever be a horse that's a true champion of the world for 2 reasons. 1. No horse is ever going to travel all over the world and win in every horse racing nation. 2. Most great horses never train past their 2nd or 3rd season, because they're too valuable at stud, so the timescale and the risks to the well-being of the horses is too great.
LOL. Yes I added champions of the world. What I meant was he is champion of the world this year. When Patriot won the super bowl, they say champion of the world. ...
It would be pretty neat if they did a match race À la Seabiscuit vs War Admiral. These two horses have the reputation to drawl a crowd and a big purse. Who wouldn’t tune in for three minutes to see that?
Physically, I think American Pharoah handled the Belmont better, numbers wise, he did. Nothing to take away from Justify as I've liked him since his second race off debut. I think on AP best day either before or during the Triple Crown series, and Justify's best day, AP would win. Not gonna say by how much cause that's a guess I'm not willing to make, but I think he's just a little bit more superior to Justify and even Arrogate if you want to bring him up. Justify is the cream of the last 3 crops of 3 year olds and that's including his own this year. But physically as well as numbers and stats wise, AP is better. Yes he's had less experience, but that's not playing a factor in pure speed and endurance that's just his mentality. A good mind makes a great horse. But a great jockey can give a 99-1 long shot as good as any other horse. And vice versa. Pharoah's crop I think was better as well. Hell Frosted set a record in the Met Mile and AP burned him like a smokers cigar in the Triple Crown. I like them both but AP is my go to. Agree or not, it's not gonna change.
Justify ran the KD & PS under terrible weather conditions, especially the PS! it was so damn foggy that day😂 IMO that makes his TC win more impressive.
American Pharaoh ran faster in the end. Justify looks more majestic to me. He reminds me of Secretariat. I wish they would have run American Pharoah 3 more years.
Both are special but Big Red ran the fastest times in all three races and a combined time of 6 mis 16 sec and 40 fractions and is the benchmark which every other horse must be measured by. Since his triple crown win in 1973 (46 years ago) there were only 4 others that have done it. Seattle Slew in 1977, Affirmed in 1978, AP in 2015 and Justify in 2018. Affirmed ran it next fastest in 06:22:40, a full 6 seconds off Big Red. Then Seatle Slew at 06:26:20, then Jusitfy at 06:28:11 and finally AP at 06:28:51, a full 8+ seconds off Big Red. The exciting thing is that in the 7 years between 73 and 79, there were 3 winners. In the 5 years since 2015, we've had 2 winners. With 2 years still to go, hopefully we see another triple crown winner in 2020 or 2021.
These comparisons are what the horses leave in their stall. You can't compare these two horses unless they are running in the same race. The track conditions could have been a little bit different. The wind could have been different. And to think that Justify could have won this race if Mike Smith would have just let him run, is crazy. This is not Secretariat we're talking about. Justify was running out of gas in the Preakness when they did that. If Mike Smith hadn't rated him, he would have been caught.
Looks to me based on setting playback to .25 speed that AP hits the wire about 3-5 Lengths sooner than Justify and it appears that AP was LOADED meaning he could’ve won by even more if asked.
The crowd screamed louder for American Pharoah because he was the drought breaker. But Justify's immortality stems from the fact that he is the Seattle Slew to AP's Secretariat. And because he retired, Justify is now the only TC winner to remain undefeated.
Regardless of which horse was better, although I would edge out justify only because he didn't accomplish what pharoah did as a two year old, you still have to believe that Bob baffert is spectacular as a trainer.
What was the purpose of entering the other Baffert horse - who had zero chance of winning? To those claiming there were no shenanigans going on in the race - please explain why the other horse Restoring Hope was entered. The connection admitted they did not think the horse could win. Some claim it was because they wanted Justify to take on all comers...but that adage applies to horses with legitimate chances of winning - horses like Audible, who should have run. It is obvious to anyone who is not a complete turd that the connections entered the horse with the specific plan to block others from moving at various points in the race such that they could attain no real rhythm...which is vital in a race like this. I witnessed Bravazo and Tenfold being stifled each time they tried to stretch their legs and make up ground. The bottom line is that while entering the horse and forcing horses wide and then blocking others is not illegal per se...it is certainly not the actions of connections with complete faith in their horse's greatness and ability to win over any adversity. They saw in the Preakness the horse was vulnerable and were issuing an insurance policy to ensure victory - and most importantly - the huge sum of money that goes along with it. Saying the truth does make one a sore loser, as many sycophants have echoed. Anyone with eyeballs could see how the race unfolded. Heck, even Stevie Wonder could see it. If you don't believe what was clearly visible, then I have a handful of magic beans to sell you.
Rachel Alexandra I agree it was obvious, though I think Baffert had valid reasons to play it that way. Not really here to get into that or try to convince anyone otherwise. I just wanted to point out how close you are to what I believe could be the real scandal on this matter. You mentioned Audible. Everyone is so hyped up about Baffert's tactics in this race that it's completely overshadowed the far more peculiar fact that Winstar Farms has an ownership interest in Audible, they also have an ownership interest in Justify and Restoring Hope as well. Winstar stood to make a shitload if Justify won the triple crown. Restoring Hope gets entered, Audible is pulled and Winstar made a ton of money in breeding rights and triple crown bonuses. Audibles injury sure was convenient for Winstar.
Justify was a scaredy cat. Too scared to race again because of "injury" Pharoah wasn't scared and he became horse of the year after the BCC. He is the true champion.
Any horse who wins these three grueling races within five weeks; is deserving of the title "Tripple Crown Winner". No horse wins under the same circumstances and should not be shamed or called unworthy.
Of course Justify had to swim to win the first legs of the TC. Can't really fault him for being 2 seconds slower than AP there at the end and he didn't need to be either - the competition was whooped already there. AP got good weather and track conditions for the 1st two legs of his TC. But really it's hard to compare them on only the Belmont.
Listen... And Listen closely .... The trainer of both horses is Bob Baffert... He has said numerous times AP was the better horse and would win if the 2 ever faced each other ... Case closed
It’s the same exact, goddamn thing. When a horse wins the triple crown off the lead in any way, I will be fully behind him. Maybe Justify is the real deal, but for Christ’s sake, why doesn’t someone run with him so we can find out?
They all try to run with him but could not come up pace to pace with Justify's long strides. Look at Bolt D' Oro, he was burn out at the Met-Mile and faded badly. For one thing, most of those horses that run with Justify will not see a race track again.
sandog dy That’s what they said about Pharoah, that no one could keep up with him. Then Frosted did just that in the Travers, and he got caught by Keen Ice after showing a lot of heart. That loss was the most impressive race I saw of Pharoah, and it would be interesting to see Justify challenged again as he was by Good Magic in the Preakness when he almost lost.
SlayCityUSA If every horse in a race settles for second place, there’s no point. The objective, if you’ll remember, is to cross the finish line first. Frosted and Good Magic are good horses with good connections because they showed guts running against their usual style because they want to win. And besides, if any other front runner was entered, he would be in serious trouble anyway. So to sum up, Justify is super talented, and got a field that didn’t go to the lead and didn’t want to win. That’s fun.
I love them both but American Pharoah is a grand slam winner. Justify Undefeated Triple Crown Winner. Both Immortal And have written the history books in their name.
I like to read good comments, but as usually the fan boys and girls are squawking that "my horse is faster than your horse. I would wonder if these people would appear like weeds in a field of pertinent comments. Without fail these prattlers prove me correct as they do so. A good race horse runs enough to win, period. I get tired of these time comparisons between horses of different years. It's futile. Yes opinions are free, but they're freely given without meaning or relevance. So troll away, people.
While I can appreciate the effort, there are way too many variables to use this as a method to determine a winner. Anyone that follows racing would tell you this as a fact. I have seen too many comparisons like this over the years, and they just don't hold up due to the enormous amount of variables which influence each and every race.
Mediators... tch. They were equally matched horses in succession but justify was indeed the faster horse... until american pharaoh opened up 30 feet at the end of the stretch
marsack7 Both horses won the triple crown in different years, one just a little faster than the other. What details do you want? I can explain if you really have questions.
marsack7 Justify is on top and breaks out front on the rail. Pharoah is on the bottom. When you watch them run, you have to watch for the big white poles that mark the distance if you want to know how far apart the races actually are. I don't know if that makes sense but Justify came out of the gate and ran a pretty fast half compaired to Pharoah who eventually caught up to Justify's time and then beat it. It's very small on my phone too, I had to look a few times when I first watched. I agree, these horses are both incredible. :)
we will soon find out tune may 2nd to see the the virtual derby of champions only question is who comes in second to justify....lmao no not really but the real question is who is second to big red
I agree that AP was pushed harder than justify and that's why his time was faster but then again did u also know that Mike Smith hit him with the crop 32 times down the back stretch to get him to that time! Both are amazing athletes and triple crown winners, no need to argue over whose faster or who would beat who!
American Pharaoh would have lost to Justify in the Preakness Stakes. The conditions were similar in both races and Justify’s time was 3 second faster than AP’s time. However, AP would’ve won in any race that had ideal conditions. I find Justify tolerated a sloppy track better than AP
What makea Justify better than American Pharaoh is better and harder compettion. Good Magic is a monster of a horse and the most important thing, Justify was injured already , just take a look on his left back leg.
Fernando Cruz Good Magic might have been a monster as far as size goes but after winning the Haskell he finished next to last in the Travers only beating the filly Wonder Gadot then was promptly retired. Frosted who was beaten 5 1/2 lengths by Pharoah in the Belmont pushed him hard enough in the Travers to allow Keen Ice to an upset win. Frosted then won the Pennsylvania Derby and at 4 went on to set a stakes record in the Metropolitan and won the Whitney at Saratoga. Pharoah also defeated the older horses Effinex and Honor Code among others in the Breeders Cup Classic. Pharoah most definitely had the better competition.
... like Seattle Slew. I think Sham would have beaten Seattle Slew. Still any triple crown winner is still an above average horse, just not necessarily an all time great.
That's funny...just before the Kentucky Derby, everyone is saying this was the deepest 3yo crop in years. Justify wins, and all of a sudden, the crop is shit.

I agree. Justify is the least deserving TC winner in my opinion. The 2018 3y/o crop wasnt all that good.
I don't think Justify was scared. It really was't his decision.
Pace was way slower for Pharoah, but, he got at least 2 lenghts on Justify at the end.
Any horse who wins these three grueling races within five weeks; is deserving of the title "Tripple Crown Winner". No horse wins under the same circumstances and should not be shamed or called unworthy.
Interesting how they both were on the lead most of the way.
Que carrera inolvidable
What were the times
Robert Wall Justify 2:28.18
American Pharoah 2:26.65
So who won
Justify was a descendant of the great secretariat!
So is American Pharoah. That is why Penny Chenery came to watch him race in the Belmont
You must have missed downpour just before and the sloppy track AP ran in the preakness.
saludos desde maracaibo estado zulia venezuela yorman viloria para mi unos de los mejores caballos de bod baffer justifi gano la triple corona enfermo
Instead of comparing horses, why not recognize the family tree both of these horses are part of
Listen... And Listen closely .... The trainer of both horses is Bob Baffert... He has said numerous times AP was the better horse and would win if the 2 ever faced each other ... Case closed
seemed like Justify was setting a faster pace but American Pharoah had a faster sprint by alot
I SEEN ALL TRPILE CROWN RACES SINCE SECRETARIAT. NONE COULD COMPARE TO THIS CHAMPION
still secretariat's record is unbeaten.....
It’s the same exact, goddamn thing. When a horse wins the triple crown off the lead in any way, I will be fully behind him. Maybe Justify is the real deal, but for Christ’s sake, why doesn’t someone run with him so we can find out?
American Pharaoh wasn't tested ether. He went slower than Justify 3/4 of the race. The Pharaoh had a lot left in the tank as a result than Justify.
Good Magic, Tenfold, Vinorozo and Bravazo are in the veterinary hospital now recuperating....just kidding lol
I think any horse that can win the triple crown is a good horse
American f the best 🔥🔥😍😍😍🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇲🇽🇺🇸
American p the best 🔥🔥🔥
American the best 😍😍
Not going to beat either one allowing them to crawl through fractions like that.
Mediators... tch. They were equally matched horses in succession but justify was indeed the faster horse... until american pharaoh opened up 30 feet at the end of the stretch
AP > Justify ( Justify's connections over-reacted...he should've at least raced to the end of the year)
Justify is a great horse. An so is AP. I think Justify is faster. But thay Both are great.
Both obviously excellent. AP that bit better.
This is the Belmont, not the triple crown
👍
AP wins by a length!
Cepatnya masi american pharoah
Sound on..... is annyoing lol
American gano todavia 2 mas Carreras se volvio el major caballos del mundoooooooo q Nadine a hechooooo
American Pharoah the best......
American pharoah greatest and strongest from justify
Duh. What happened? No explanation for us newbys.
marsack7 Both horses won the triple crown in different years, one just a little faster than the other. What details do you want? I can explain if you really have questions.
Tetreau Nicole yep got that. Which horse is which? I can barely see the race on my phone. Sorry. Who is who? Love those horses both!
marsack7 Justify is on top and breaks out front on the rail. :)
Wow. Both races are the same. All of it..
American Pharoah
American pharaoh is way better horse then justify we all know if justify cant win the breeder cup like American pharaoh he not a good horse
America the bestttttttttttt
One a champion, the other and much much slower SLUG
Pharoah win
Get over American Pharoah because Justify has never lost a race when he won the Triple Crown.
st3gamefarm Yep
Why can't we have both?
They're different horses entirely, and both amazing. Why does anyone have to do the d*** measuring contest?
st3gamefarm Which means absolutely nothing because they didn’t race against the same competition.
I think Seabiscut would beat them both!!
I think Secretariat would have beaten them all!
Lol
Seabiscuit is great though, don't get me wrong..
we will soon find out tune may 2nd to see the the virtual derby of champions only question is who comes in second to justify....lmao no not really but the real question is who is second to big red
lol american Pharoah's gait is soooooo much more majestic
Easy Goer beats both on this track
I agree that AP was pushed harder than justify and that's why his time was faster but then again did u also know that Mike Smith hit him with the crop 32 times down the back stretch to get him to that time! Both are amazing athletes and triple crown winners, no need to argue over whose faster or who would beat who!
laurin brannon hit him 32 times in the backstretch????
jmeryllman mmmhmmmmm and if u watch u can see Mike whapping on AP when he really didnt need too
Uh..................Victor Espinosa rode AP, not Mike Smith.
sharedancestors whoops thought they were the same jockey still dosent change what he did.
jmeryllman I'm sure she meant the home stretch. Lol! I saw what you were getting at there. ;)
Unglaublich.... Solche Pferde. I werd narrisch...
What ever you do still Secretariat is still the best!!!
No one cares, hes been dead 30 years. This is the age for new champions.
@@OfficialMuffiin I don't think so.. I think all the breeders and owners are hoping and praying that they can produce another Secretariat!!!
Justify is a good horse but won't be remembered as a great. Just lucky to be born in an uncompetitive year.
Oh yeah, he will be remembered with that 75 M breeding contract.
... like Seattle Slew.
That's right 75 millions
Fissel Tube your wrong. He will be.
