What really kills is that this is a trio. All that sound from just three guys. In concert Geddy just reaches over and plays keyboards, sometimes while still playing his bass with his left hand. Neal is frequently given the accolade of being the GOAT of rock drum players. In a guitar player article they asked the question, "Is Alex Lifeson too good for rock and roll?" Three insanely talented musicians who stayed friends and elevated rock music to a different level
It's funny to see people's reaction the first time they hear this song, because all the changing tempos and styles are meant to sound like turning the radio dial. It's a very clever, very groovy song, and I've never seen anyone not like it.
The thing that's ironic is that this song 🎵 and the album "Permanent Waves" (1980) came out the year I graduated 🎓 high school and I've been a fan for as many years.
An entire arena doing the hand gestures to this song live is one of THE coolest things I have every had the privilege to experience! RIP Neil, still missing you....
I think the first couple times I saw them, it was actually clapping during that section. The last time I saw them was Snakes and Arrows so it was the little finger puppets lol..
Neil is the best drummer, percussionist and lyricist on the planet. But keep in mind that Geddy is singing, playing the bass and keyboards with his feet at the same time. Alex is the most underrated lead guitarist ever. These guy together are magic. I love Rush! Is so wonderful to see see people GET Rush. This video is awesome, we’ll put together!
The most underrated musicians of all time (in pop culture) were the members of the "Wrecking Crew" (although I do agree Lifeson is too often omitted from list of guitar greats). Nobody has heard of 90% of them, and yet they provided more memorable tracks than anyone you can think of, and across almost every genre of music. One guitarist who played for them for many years before he branched out and DID become famous in his own right was legendary guitarist Glen Campbell.
As a female Rush fan since the summer of '75, "The Spirit of Radio" is, IMHO, their best song with lyrics. It was awesome to see so many reactors in one video. I have seen most of them before and seeing them again was priceless! ✌🎸

Lucky for me, I grew up Toronto in the 70's and 80's and I'm sitting here laughing my ass off watching these people discover this song!! I remember the day it came out and oh yes! We went just as nuts!! Thank you, that was fun...
I just love how everybody from all walks of life can enjoy beautiful music like this. It's like we are all united as one. The way it always should be. Music is free. And such a blessing.
The song is meant to be someone changing stations on an old style car radio. That’s why there’s so many musical changes. My favorite detail though is the cascading sound (at 4:13 and elsewhere) is meant to sound like quickly spinning though an old analog radio dial.
I was late to Rush and never knew about the changing stations thing until reading these comments. Brilliant. Or as @jamel_aka_jamal said “what in the s***?!” 😂
All these influencers heard SOR for the first time, and the reactions were positive. Forty-three years later, Rush still inspires new listeners. I was privileged to see the performance live and enjoyed the sounds of Rush before they retired and the passing of Neil. Thank goodness I did.
RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! I play drums and there are a few things that you need to know about Neil Peart’s ( pronounced PEER-T) character: First he writes the lyrics so he knows in advance what TYPE of song it’s meant to be ie ballad, driver, etc. Second he COMPOSES on the drums… like a carpenter who looks at a set of blueprints before building the object. Neil lays out a SKETCH in his mind of the VOICES of the drumset and builds the song from there. He is also a great LISTENER knowing when NOT to step over Geddy’s singing or Alex’s solos! Finally, he had perfect timing and fluidity of time changes. He said himself that it’s not about COUNTING the time signatures as much as fluid motion to change the tempo without counting: in other words it should FLOW! He hates repeating the same drum patterns in the same song meaning if he plays a fill one way the first time around he will play it differently the second time around. IE. Rolls down the toms the first time around and triplets or quads (all four limbs) the second time around. In short there will NEVER be another like him on planet earth 🌍 🌏 🌎! REST IN PEACE PROFESSOR! With heart felt admiration and sincerity! Gary
Ive been a RUSH fan for 40 years and their genius never ceases to amaze me as i am still catching nuances I had not noticed before. RIP Neil you are missed in so many ways....
Love seeing the younger generation see what us "old folks" see and hear in Rush. I was fortunate enough to see them in concert in my college years several times. Great band, great instrumentalists, great music.
Funny to me how RUSH honors Simon & Garfunkel ,,, "For th3 words of the prophets are written on the subway walls , and echoed by the sound of silence..." Favorite band ever !
This song alone has saved my ass a million times while being stuck in traffic going to work in the morning on my way to YYZ on the 401 or the QEW... I'd go from being a zombie to the happiest man sitting in traffic and then look around for others to see who else was playing the air drums, guitar and bass. Best bumper to bumper traffic ever!
It's so great to see this music getting celebrated so many years later! I will never forget the first time I heard this. I had early release from school my senior year for work, installing car stereos. The t-tops were off in my 79' Formula Firebird and windows down, and as I was crossing the railroad track on FM 1960 in NW Houston, I switched the station just in time to hear the guitar intro and INSTANTLY knew it was a new Rush song. I CRANKED it -- I was smiling from ear to ear, looking around to the other cars like, hey y'all are you getting this!? (no one seemed as excited as me haha).
I have been rocking RUSH since the 70s. 5-6 live concerts . Im blessed to have seen them live. Smoking bong hits to Moving Pictures in the early 80's. RUSH!!!
Thanks for the video RIP Neil Peart. Young kids now have no idea of how much radio was apart of our lives back in the 60's and 70's. Rush best Canadian rock band ever. Lyrically, the song is a lament on the change of FM radio from free-form to commercial formats during the late 1970s. The Toronto-based station CFNY-FM-which had not abandoned free-form programming-is cited as an inspiration for the song, It's brilliant the transitions, is like changing the radio dial.
Few things give me as much joy as watching people's, especially younger folks, reaction to hearing a Rush song for the first time and getting their minds blown. Welcome to the family!
When I first heard this song as a child in the early 80s not enough people truly appreciated it then outside of Rush fans Now all these years later it has become huge classic that millions love
Watching these reactions reminds me of the first time I heard Spirit of Radio. I was a big fan already. Saw them twice live-blown away. New album eagerly awaited, I bought it the first day it was released. Put it on in the car running errands and this was the first song. Drove away from the record store on my next errand. Within a minute I pulled over to give the song my undivided attention. I was already a fan. But this was…next…level…sh!t. Like these reactors, I was shocked at how creative, how brilliant this was. Couldn’t get enough of it. Kept running it back and playing it again.
Nice work! "Dude! Ten! Ten! Dude! Dude! Ten!" And your selection of NoLifeShaq's comment to close the video was brilliant. I've now heard this song 273,000 times and never tire of it.
So glad to see the young generation appreciating the pure genius of RUSH. I have had the privilege of seeing them 21 times in concert, a thrill every time. Seeing them live is so spectacular, Geddy Lee claps with the crowd who is in the spotlight during the Spirit of Radio, just like he is clapping in this video. (check out some live footage on you tube also) I hope everyone enjoys listening to the best 3 man band of all time for years to come.
The '70s and the '80s were a great time to be alive. To be going from your mid to late teens and your first car. What incredible music we had to blast on our car stereo system back then ! Not like the sewage that the music and recording industry in the US. Has been pumping out for the masses for decades.
So few bands have the ability and epic talent to take their listeners along for the same ride they are on. When you hear this, it's like you are actually wth them. This is such a great song and it's great to see first time listeners smiling and having fun with it.
I wonder how many people understand that all those transitions are representative of someone switching on the radio and turning the dial up and down the frequencies, hearing style after style. I love Rush. 🤘🏻😆🤘🏻
Nicely put together. And sums up the song's impact on people wonderfully. *EVERYBODY* likes The Spirit of Radio. I've even encountered people who, for whatever reason they give, say they don't like Rush, but when they hear TSoR, they like it. This cut-together shows it in action. White, Brown, Black, Red, Yellow, old, young, in-between - Whatever - Matches my personal experience - everybody loves it from jump. Alex, Geddy and Neil done REAL good with this one. Miss ya, Neil.
Rush used to make a habit of playing a couple of songs from their upcoming album at the end of the show tour. They played this at the end of the Hemispheres gig I saw along with Jacob's Ladder. I then saw Rush for my final time on the Permanent Waves tour and we had front row seats. Some jerk was trying to push me away from the barrier where I was holding onto my spot for dear life...right there twenty feet away from Geddy Lee. Then they played this song again, and that jerk guy started doing that hand thing, which Geddy saw, and was nice enough to do it back to the guy as a friendly gesture.
This is one of my favorites from one of my favorite bands. I’m too stupid to figure out what they are talking about in the lyrics but the rest of the song is amazing. It has several styles and a funky groove that is unique and universal. Love the way they seamlessly transition the tempo and styles to include funk, raggae, rock and jazz maybe even a bit of bluesy guitar mixed in for shits and giggles. Amazing bass and guitar and of course the professor doing his thing masterfully as usual. RIP Neil we miss you sir.
It is always fun to watch someone hear this song for the first time. Watching them when the transitions that simulate switching channels on an FM dial come in; always gets them every time.
This is my essay to people who may not know RUSH or who Neil was professionally and his contributions to the art of drumming and lyrical writing! Enjoy! RUSH is THE PERFECT EXAMPLE of the fluidity of MASTERING TIME SIGNATURES! RUSH: MASTERS OF TIME SIGNATURES: They don't sit down and say "Let's write in (x) time signature." They just write what they feel. Jacob's Ladder alternates between 5/4, 6/4 and 7/4, then 6/8 and 7/8. Limelight is 7/4 not 7/8. The middle of La Villa (A Lerxst in Wonderland) is in 7/8. Kid Gloves is in 5/4 for the intro and verses and 4/4 for choruses. The Trees starts in 3/4, moves into 4/4 and the solo section is 5/4.
If I'm not mistaken, I believe they have a song in a super-strange time (something like 12/11 or 12/8) and they did it just for the sake of using that odd time signature.
I don't think people are appreciating the lyrics in this song and how you have to basically sell your soul to get played on the radio back in the days. One likes to believe in the freedom of music But glittering prizes And endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity
NEIL PEART’S NARRATION ON EXIT STAGE LEFT DVD: There’s a tremendous ambiance about a concert hall…to even before a band starts playing…from the time the doors open..this place feels electric you know! That’s one of the things I like most about the road that feeling of standing in the hall when the doors open feel the excitement bursting into the hall. I must admit I feel very comfortable playing live a lot! A very modern urban setting for that Tom Sawyer mentality and a very carefree stride and a very self-possessed kind of air. Xanadu: The question we tend to ask the most often is WHAT IF? I think of you had to simplify a motivation or simplify a moving force in our music that would probably…suffice! Red Barchetta: Well it seems to me a car is one of those handy metaphors and volumes have been written about the sociological and cultural impact of the car and what it represents but it also has a very fundamental sensual feel and it’s a metaphor for sexuality and freedom. We’ve certainly tried to guide everything by the principles that were interested in and the freedom of choice and the material we’ve been playing and expression of music that we found to be exciting would excite other people as well. If the songwriting is important and playing really well on stage is important it’s gonna make the difference between feeling good or not feeling good when I walk off stage feeling that I played as well as I can or as close to well as I can then I feel very satisfied and good for what you have done. YYZED: I think there is a very strong relation maybe not generally recognized between drums and between words as the rhythmic structure and phrasing and the rhythm of verse especially is very strongly rooted in the same syncopation as drums the same patterns of thinking overall work for me with words as much as they do with drum beats.
Jamel_aka_Jamal, if this is his first time reacting to Rush, let it be known that in this other videos, he always puts Rush in the top 10, or even maybe the top 5, of his favorite bands of all time. That he didn't know about until he started his reaction channel. So it's scrumptious to me to watch his reaction.
The first ever reaction to Rush i watched was Andy & Alex’s and , to this day, is probably my favourite. Their faces and reaction at the end are priceless, ive watched it so many times 😊
8:24 cause Geddy be slappin da bahsss. We saw their last couple of tours 6 shows. Will never regret the cash i spent over the decades on Rush concerts. Best trio after the Trinity.
I can honestly say The Spirit of Radio has been my my favourite song from when I first heard it in 1979. It's too good and too much from arguably the BEST rock band ever! RUSH was severely marginalized and underrated for decades.
I still react that way after 40 years of loving this song. The lyrics mean so much to me and they were right. The transitions are mind boggling. The song is an epic journey of musicianship on an infinite level.
Spirit of Radio Means they were recording a song of somebody listening to the radio and spinning the dial to the next station, get it, & the next station, and the next and the next and the next …… definitely my all-time favorite song by Rush…. but I do love both 2112 and farewell the kings, the whole, damn albums, It’s the only way you listen to those…❤
The reggae/ska section is truly unique, followed by one of Alex's best solos. Years later, Rush and Terry Brown came to odds over the Police-influenced Digital Man.
FYI, the reason they played reggae for a bit, is because, in that section, they're actually playing several different ways to simulate changing the station.
As a HUUUUUGE Rush fan ,the shift between the previous album Hemispheres (still the best album they ever made) and Permanent Waves(the best album cover of all time) was MASSIVE.
I'm not disagreeing...I just have a sincere question. Moving Pictures is a cool cover, especially when you dive into the intricacies. So, what makes Permanent Waves so good? (Better than Moving Pictures?)
@@correctlyrics Transition my friend,Hemispheres is a total different album and most Rush fans say their best .But Permanent waves is a transition between old and new .I really can't explain. Its like trying to explain the differece between Natural Science and the Camera eye Off Moving Pictures ,two great long songs on an epic scale ......but..............thats it i can't explain as its a personal thing in my head .
I remember as a kid when I first heard this song, I wanted to RUSH to the record store and buy the album immediately. - which I did. Been a fan of the band ever since.
RUSH: Making other bands say WTF since 1974!
"The drummer in Rush is your favorite drummer's, favorite drummer" Quote I read in one of these reactions, thought it was cool...👍
Nobody does it better. I bet some bands were scratching their heads and yelling at producers. Something special here.
Long live RUSH ❤

I can play John Bonham and Keith Moon.
I still can't play Neil Pert ...
Great Post!
Same here bro, hard time playing any Niel drum piece. Without a doubt he's simply the most amazing drummer that has lived
It's funny to see people's reaction the first time they hear this song, because all the changing tempos and styles are meant to sound like turning the radio dial. It's a very clever, very groovy song, and I've never seen anyone not like it.
Great song and band
The reactions to the reggae break are priceless.
How can you not love Rush
The thing that's ironic is that this song 🎵 and the album "Permanent Waves" (1980) came out the year I graduated 🎓 high school and I've been a fan for as many years.
Sad part is, the song is about the inevitable end of radio. The industry destroyed music for money.
An entire arena doing the hand gestures to this song live is one of THE coolest things I have every had the privilege to experience! RIP Neil, still missing you....
Been there many a time.
I don't think you ever stop missing someone!

Gary
RUSH: MASTERS OF TIME SIGNATURES:
They don't sit down and say "Let's write in (x) time signature." They just write what they feel.
One likes to believe in the freedom of music
But glittering prizes
And endless compromises shatter the illusion of integrity
All my favorite reaction people... beautiful to share the love 💕💖💖💖💖
Still gives me goose bumps after 40 years!
For me, the defining feature of RUSH's music is how clear it is. No muddyness at all. Every note, from every instrument is clear as a bell.
NEIL PEART’S NARRATION ON EXIT STAGE LEFT DVD:
There’s a tremendous ambiance about a concert hall…to even before a band starts playing…from the time the doors open..this place feels electric you know!
YYZED:
I think there is a very strong relation maybe not generally recognized between drums and between words as the rhythmic structure and phrasing and the rhythm of verse especially is very strongly rooted in the same syncopation as drums the same patterns of thinking overall work for me with words as much as they do with drum beats.
Yep, I liked watching him fall into the rabbit-hole and never come out :)
Rush-bearing a gift beyond price it’s almost free. I would’ve paid a fortune for it. Thank you Rush.
I think that this was the first Rush song that I ever heard as a kid growing up in the seventies. It was a big radio hit. I’ve been a fan ever since
Omg. I love this so much! BEST BAND EVER. RIP Professor 🎸🎶🎹🎶🥁🎶🎸🎶
Another great compilation!! Good job
Alex's guitar sounds like a tuned Porche.
The first ever reaction to Rush i watched was Andy & Alex’s and , to this day, is probably my favourite. Their faces and reaction at the end are priceless, ive watched it so many times 😊
Saw them five or six times in the late 70s / early 80s. Just a fantastic live band. Period.
RUSH The greatest rock band that ever was or ever will be.
8:24 cause Geddy be slappin da bahsss. We saw their last couple of tours 6 shows. Will never regret the cash i spent over the decades on Rush concerts. Best trio after the Trinity.
Great job….it’s a ton of work putting these together.
This is why I love dream theater 👍👍Transitions !! Professional musicians ☘️
Andy & Alex had the best reaction all due to that opening riff winning them over immediately! I love watching it everytime!
I can honestly say The Spirit of Radio has been my my favourite song from when I first heard it in 1979. It's too good and too much from arguably the BEST rock band ever! RUSH was severely marginalized and underrated for decades.
Triumph too!
When first listening to Rush having the lyrics on cc or in front of you will bring the whole experience to another level.
Forever under rated, never mentioned with the greats, Alex is the definition of under rated guitarists
I still react that way after 40 years of loving this song. The lyrics mean so much to me and they were right. The transitions are mind boggling. The song is an epic journey of musicianship on an infinite level.
getty Lee lives 20 minutes from my house in Toronto Canada.... please listen to the Tragically hip...also Canadian...killer
So happy to have grown up on these guys! They have an infinite amount of songs to absolutely blow your mind!
Spirit of Radio
Means they were recording a song of somebody listening to the radio and spinning the dial to the next station, get it, & the next station, and the next and the next and the next …… definitely my all-time favorite song by Rush…. but I do love both 2112 and farewell the kings, the whole, damn albums,
It’s the only way you listen to those…❤
After watching this compilation again, imagine all these people missed seeing Rush. That is painful.
The reggae/ska section is truly unique, followed by one of Alex's best solos. Years later, Rush and Terry Brown came to odds over the Police-influenced Digital Man.
Funny learning that song on the drums in the 80,s! And people just now hearing it!
RUSH are and will forever be brilliant. ❤
Thanks for this! More please!
Rush told a lotta stories with their music it was beautiful and still is
It's good to see you back brother!
FYI, the reason they played reggae for a bit, is because, in that section, they're actually playing several different ways to simulate changing the station.
I absolutely love the joy of Lex it's infectious!!!❤❤
Amazing three guys can make such epic music been a fan since the 70's
GOD I LOVE RUSH
Beatiful music band rush 1980..
I remember as a kid when I first heard this song, I wanted to RUSH to the record store and buy the album immediately. - which I did.
Been a fan of the band ever since.
I love this video so much….love seeing so many different people loving on this perfect song 💜
I always thought the "bridge" transitions were to simulate with music the change of radio stations on an analog FM radio.
Just three Toronto boys. Smashing it 😂❤🇨🇦
That's called musicianship
The guy that called them nerdy.....Yes...yes they are!!!😄😄
No-one is EVER ready for Rush.
I didn't think I'd see the day where the charismatic voice would be in a video less than 12 minutes. Lol
Three guys! Only three guys! Love to see people hearing RUSH for the time.
