Chopsticks 101 - How To Master Using Them

  • Holding and using chopsticks may seem very difficult for many but we hope to help each and every one of you who have had some difficulty using them in the past.
For starters, remember that the way you hold them is in a relaxed state; the only time there's pressure is when you surround the chopsticks around the item to grab and it is at that moment that you actually bring the fingers together and grab the item. It's actually very simply once you get the hang of it.
Now if you've been using chopsticks for a while, try grabbing some uncooked rice and see how fast you can transfer each grain, from one plate to another. Let us know how awesome you are at using them in the comment section below.

Some people really struggle with this.
I found emphasizing the fact that the bottom stick doesn't really move around much, and to just hold it firm - that usually get it to "click" with some people.

Being a chinese guy I've been using chopsticks as long as I could remember probably when I was 4 or 5. But I never really got taught how to use an chopstick I just gradually knew how to use it by using it or watching other family members use it. I use mine differently I use my thumb and pointing finger to hold one while the other rests on myiddle finger.

Awesome :D I love eating Sushi - I think im doing it right but I would love to see a Sushi etiquette video from you.. like how to pick it up and dip it in the sauce.. I was eating sushi ready prepared last week and it suggested dipping the sushi face side down into the sauce, but I could not master exactly how to do it without having to pick it up twice

Cool. I will be using chopsticks this afternoon during dinner. I'll practice using the rice technique Master Hiro demonstrated until I master them. The chef at a local Japanese restaurant gave me a pair of chopsticks that had a folded piece of paper secured with a rubber band at the top end and those are easy to use. I need to practice more with the loose pair I have because I'm determined to master them. Wish me luck. I'm getting hungry again:) LOL

Pleasantly surprised to find out (after getting the urge to "get better" at using them) that I, as an American, am better than most of the world at using chopsticks. I eat most of my meals with chopsticks. I can move grains of rice like a Mfer. And it's now clicking why my coworkers all smile whenever I eat lunch in meetings lol. In the bottom of a cup of ramen noodles, I don't drink the leftover vegetables with the broth, I pick each piece of corn and carrot up one by one with my chopsticks. I do this probably several times a week lol

I never understood why some people have so much trouble with using chopsticks.
I remember when I learnt to use them, I was in Japan on a school trip, where we stayed with a family for two weeks. I went to the school, sat down and watched how they used them and just picked up how to use them instantly. Many years later, I can still just pick them up and go. Not that I use chopsticks regularly, maybe once every two years at some Cantonese restaurant.
I think people have a bad habit of just saying, "Oh this is hard" or "I can't do it".
Positive mindset is what lets you get things done :)

I must be a lost cause, 'cause no matter what I do, the bottom chop stick slides up my ring finger and the chop sticks will not meet at a single point but instead cross... Tried for weeks, time to give up. I am using round Japanese chop stick, but same happens, to a lesser degree, with square Chinese chop sticks as well. The only way I get to be somehow proficient is by using thumb and first two fingers where i hold the bottom stick by pushing with my index and handling the top stick with the major and the thumb, but any heavier food will fall.
