I have an older version of this guy though mine was a 2 6 2 Prairie, pre-DCC. Fought with those tabs too. Had to clean and lube mine as it is about 40 years old. Runs a well now. Thanks again for the videos! Well done! Agree with you re Bachmann, my Prairie cost around $30 and thought it a good deal. Was U.P. when I got it, cleaned it up and repainted in GN livery.
Thanks for you kind words about my Vid. Didn't know they made a prairie version. Now Im gunna be on the lookout for a prairie, with the right price. :-)
Love your videos! I'm hooked now. Split frame motors are a nightmare on bachmann trains. (TBH bachmann trains are a nightmare in general) Bachmann gives you a small clear bottle of smoke fluid with every train with a smoking feature My guess is some kid dumped it all in there 🤣
As with all your other videos, very entertaining. Empowers me to have the courage to perform repairs and preventive maintenance on my collection. Keep up the excellent work!
Possibly a blessing in disguise that the smoke unit doesn't work - they're known to melt the stack! Those new 0-6-0's are pretty good runners too, bachmann recently announced a retool of them for the first time since they debuted in the 70's - 80's!
Can confirm about the smoke unit melting the stack. I literally found this video because I picked up a used one from 2012 whose stack had melted, used this guide to find out how to remove the smoker.
Very nice video, I realize how much time it takes to make an edit. I really like my 0-60 it's got the Vanderbilt oil tender. I especially am impressed with how that crawl so slowly it's so much more realistic that way for filming especially. Thank you again for such an informative video I'm going to hold onto it just in case I ever need to take it apart
Have several of these, both DC and DCC. They are okay for the money. A few things I've done: Remove the smoke units because my body doesn't play well with the smoke chemicals. Added weight inside the steam and sand domes and where smoke unit used to be, sometimes merely filling the plastic tub with weight. Replace molded on whistle with freestanding detail. Shorten tender drawbar by a dimension I don't know the numbers for. Add working front coupler; sometimes by building entirely new pilot beam. When a couple years ago KaDee released caboose trucks with electrical pickup I replaced the non-conducting tender trucks with those. And at the same time lowered the tender a bit by taking material off the truck mounting points, a couple millimeters. On a few of them I'm slowly getting around to adding the cab front doors to the pretty much detail-free cab front. A few have cab windows carved open and crew figures added. Might eventually add some backhead detail. Ongoing project to add hinged apron between cab and tender deck, with Walthers fireman figure in coal-fired versions.
I have the same Bachmann 0-6-0 except a little older. I found out that the smoke unit had a crack at the bottom, which led any smoke fluid to just pour out!
I don't know about B-mann HO, but their offerings in N scale have improved greatly in the past 20 years or so. It astounds me that they don''t have a 4 wheel pickup in their tender trucks like the N scale ones do.
B-Mann scares me all around with there cracking gear problems. I don't know what year this started or when it ended so I avoid them. Its to bad really because they make really beautiful shells.
Aw, man. As soon as I saw that brake cleaner I thought, "Wait, doesn't he know what that's gonna do to the paint?" lol. Oh well. Like you said, live and learn. :)
Very nice and interesting. While I'm not looking to do a full disassembly of one of my Bachmann HO locomotives (a Spectrum Pennsy K4), I do want to add weights to the smokebox area to prevent the front of the engine from jumping up whenever the drivers hit a switch frog. With that in mind, I'm wondering if you could recommend the best method of removing the smokebox door (i.e. X-Acto knife, needle-nose pliers, etc.).
Ive never kit bashed before so I have no best practice method for cutting the smokebox door off. I guess I would just remove the body from the chassis and add weight that way.
These can be decent little engines with some tinkering. First thing I always do is remove the smoke unit. My current one also has tender pickup and some extra detail added. Since about 2009, when they got rid of the plastic split axles, they've been decent runners.
You have really gotten creative with this video. I kinda like to see you talking to your subconscience, kinda like almost a ghost. The reason I stay away from Bachmann is the split frame motor. I have never liked that design. Plus the fact that Bachmann usually develop the ole cracked plastic gears. Cheers from eastern TN
You did an awesome my question is always been how long can Bachmann keep milking this 0-6-0 sweater design it's like the old saying goes how much can you keep milking a cow before the cow doesn't give anymore milk because I know for a fact there are locomotives that Bachmann used to produce back in the 70s and 80s that they no longer produce anymore that if they brought back I know they would sell well and that Bachmann wouldn't have to keep milking locomotives like 0-6-0 as much anymore as they have been
For what to expect it to pull, page 28 of the 1984 printing of Model Railroader's Cyclopedia Volume 1 Steam Locomotives of 1964 says, "A typical cut for an 0-6-0 was about six cars while an 0-8-0 might shove some 20 cars over a hump."
Hello again. I just recently got a new 0-6-0. The engine runs well but the crosshead is loose. Any advice on how to tighten the pin connecting the crosshead to the connecting rod without breaking it?
Greetings, its probably a small rivet. If the parts are still connected I would leave it alone. Rivets are installed by one end being held firm by a small anvil or heavy piece of flat steel, and the other end being struck with a small pin punch and hammer. The smaller the rivet, the harder this is to accomplish.
Hi my friend how are you. Do you recommend 127 couples that you have whisker couples #127. I have kadee knuckle couplers with Springs are those good.what do you recommend. I like the ones that automatic couple when push into another boxcar like I see here
Keep alive maybe? Decent enough switcher. I an still leery of Bachmann trains. Even their newer stuff has a toy like quality to the drive mechanism. I say this as a proud owner of the new ALC 42. Nice on the outside. Interesting intro to the video... perhaps a bit cheesy. However, Who's a good DOG?!
Congratulations Ron! Besides been hilarious this video is very informative. As you have old 0-6-0, how about a video comparing the old and the new - general appearance, noise, pulling power, current consumption? I do think that pulling power of the old ones are greater, in spite of the metal chassis of the new one. One more thing: Globally or not, you have an avid fan here in Sao Paulo, Brazil!
Greetings from up north Regis. I guess I'm getting more comfortable in my new "job" and learning to have a little fun. Thanks for the kind words. A comparison video would be a great idea, something I'll keep in mind. :-)
Definitely you’re a very simpathetic fellow. You really establish a connection with your viewers: as a teacher now using zoom, teams and other apps like them to give classes I can tell you that. Regarding to the trains, I appreciate a lot to make comparsions between my babies in order to have the best performance of them.
I own a couple of things in DC. I am Deaf disabled veteran who does not have DCC and sound. unless it's in my lap and on Y tube which my cell phone is linked to my hearing aids.

Hello, Ive seen some stacks get melted. This is a 2016 model. might already be the re-design. I don't know... maybe :-)

Great work i have a few bachmann steam locomotives
Thanks :-)

That could be the reason this one was so oily

Absolutely, positively, hil-friggin-larious. Thanks for the laugh. Oh, and the review was superb too. Accolades!!!

Hello M R T C, thanks for commenting. Did you add tender pickups? Ive never seen one stock like that. :-)
Great video👍Looks like that engine was oiled by Bevus and Butthead at Jiffy Lube 😂
Hello Christopher! It definitely was not lacking lubrication that's for sure :-)
I've had brand new n scale diesels from Bachmann that looked as if they had been dipped in oil.
You have really gotten creative with this video. I kinda like to see you talking to your subconscience, kinda like almost a ghost. The reason I stay away from Bachmann is the split frame motor. I agree with you. Bachmann are icky!

Hello Jody, I agree... Less little budget loco's and lets see some cooler bigger ones. :-)
Adding some pickups on the tender wheels from kaydee center springs will help it out.
Hello Patrick, That would be a pretty good idea. a bit of work, but very do-able! :-)
I have the 2-6-2 Southern green version and mine was COVERD in oil.
Dang nasty things. I think it was smoke juice all over it

6 would be about about its limit if it wasn't for my 2% hill.

Yes I like the "whisker" couplers from Kadee the best. so easy to install.

I'm leery of Bachmann also. I wont spend much for them, too afraid of brittle plastic.
Have you considered replacing the smoke unit at some point?
I have not. I believe this loco has been sold since this video
I didn’t know that among your skills you can be hilarious! 😂😂😂😂😂

CRC Tuner Cleaner will remove oil without damaging paint.
Great point!
You should try Piko trains. 😀
Ive never run into a Piko. Ive heard about them, just never seen one. :-)
Where is the smoke switch located? I can't find it anywhere
Inside the cab if it has one.
@@classicmodeltrains i can't find one I have the Chattanooga train set 0-6-0 steam locomotive
I own a couple of things in DC. I am Deaf disabled veteran who does not have DCC and sound. unless it's in my lap and on Y tube which my cell phone is linked to my hearing aids.
DCC sound is fun for about 5 minutes. Then it's just noise. Just my opinion :-)
the industry does not think about ADA effect them.
Do you like the song the silverton
I'm not familiar with that song
Might suggest that when cleaning an engine and for sure if it has dcc use electronics cleaner .
Good tip!
Smoke juice.... Just a taste??
Just a small taste. But I don't think this Loco's smoke unit works.
Honestly I love these engines but I will always prefer the DC versions. I had a DCC version and she ran VERY poorly from day one…
Bachmann stuff is always so hit and miss
@@classicmodeltrains true. Makes the really good stuff extra special.
CRC electronics cleaner
A lot of guys have good thing to say about that stuff. Gunna have to get me a can or 2
Get yourself a spray can of contact cleaner.
sounds like a good idea. Would be faster.
DONT EVER USE BRAKE CLEANER ON PLASTIC MODELS!!!
You've found some of my early video's. Ive learned that lesson. although a bit slow... :-)
Ya used the brake clean, THEN ya totally redeemed yourself with the beer can bottom epoxy tray👍👍👍🚂🚃🚃🇨🇦🇺🇲🙋
