Look at the history books; loud-mouted, cocksure, often histrionic characters get a nomination or even the award sometimes. From Shelley Winters to Estelle Parsons and Marisa Tomei to Mira Sorvino, these kinds of roles always attract attention. I was glad Juliette won, it was a quiet but sweet performance. And she's an amazing actress.
Remember this moment makes me so happy, Juliette deserved that. She is the most amazing actress today in all film world I think, since Bleu by Krzysztof Kieślowski.

Lauren is a gem. If you read her book she lays out this entire night. She was nervous as hell, and NOT puffed up or expecting to win; she just wanted to so badly. Her family wanted her to win even more then she did so yes he was disappointed and because he DIDN'T have to make the nice face that she did. He didn't. She may not have deserved the award over others (I haven't seen those movies) but she damn well did deserve an oscar.

I so much wanted Bacall to win what had to have been one of the most closely-fought Oscar races in years; that was until I saw Binoche a short time later in the English Patient, a performance so strong and substantial that she should have been in the leading actress category for her role and won that instead.

I'm happy for Binoche's win, she was great in English patient...and I'm also glad that Lauren in 2009 received her Honorary Oscar (even if it isn't the same thing!). Some people say that Binoche was in a leading role... it's NOT true, she had about 50 minutes on the screen and the film's duration was more than 2 hours.
When I watched that year, I thought Lauren Bacall was going to win that night, as did most everyone who followed the competition. I did think she and Joan Allen were heads above everyone else performance wise and I was NOT a big English Patient fan but the big money was on Lauren Bacall to win because of her history in movies. She did get an Oscar for her body of wrk. so it all worked out.

Lauren Bacall in The Mirror Has Two Faces was a tough call. She was great in that. So happy for Juliette Binoche, she's such a talent and was brilliant in The English Patient.

Look at the audacity of Lauren Bacall and her family so smugly assured they would win the prize, and then the eye rolling and self entitlement when the french actress wins instead. I still love this win. I may hate The English Patient as a film but I can't deny that it looked beautiful & had some strong performances, particularly Juliette Binoche. I honestly think that the Academy's love for the movie swept her up but despite my distaste for the film, she was absolutely wonderful & it's probably one of the most deserved wins ever (& Juliette was gracious and humble, which is even more wonderful). If my mother was the frontrunner and everyone thought she was going to win, I'd be angry too if she lost. That's what a good son does. Doesn't make it socially polite, but so what? It's a real emotion.
My dear Juliette, Bacall didn't deserve to win. In fact, she was the weakest of the nominees and thank god she didn't win because she was 'overdue'. This is an unfortunately rare occasion where the actress wins for her performance and not for her career. That's why we have honorary Oscars. But this is an Oscar for an individual performance. And Binoche was undoubtedly the best.

No. She was nominated for 'Best Supporting Actress' at Golden Globe and SAG Award and even won BAFTA and National Board of Review for that category. I'm not being shady; it's a fact! Her role was considered supporting part at most of the major awards.

The entire movie was a tragedy for me and every time I watch it I feel incredibly sad. The War impacted so many lives and created such loss and misery. Juliette is the shining light whose performance dragged me away from the darkness and into the beauty of life. She is why I love this movie so much.

I thought Binoche---who was superb--- was actually more of a lead actress. I would have gone with Jean-Baptiste who was truly a great supporting player.
Jean-Baptiste wasn't any more supporting in her movie though.
All of them were great. Joan Allen is my favorite one!! Her role as Elizabeth Proctor was heart-breaking!

Binoche was/is great in the English Patient! There's no question about it! The thing is: at the time everybody argued about her been nominated in the supporting role category. She has no supporting part in EP! She got only leading role nominations in every award that year but the Oscar!
No. She was nominated for 'Best Supporting Actress' at Golden Globe and SAG Award and even won BAFTA and National Board of Review for that category. I'm not being shady; it's a fact! Her role was considered supporting part at most of the major awards.

I love suprise winners. ANd this was surprise. Not gonna lie, I would have loved to have seen Bacall win, just because. But truly, the real winner was Jean-Baptiste should have won. And Brenda . Frances was great But Brenda was outstanding.

The entire movie was a tragedy for me and every time I watch it I feel incredibly sad. The War impacted so many lives and created such loss and misery. Juliette is the shining light whose performance dragged me away from the darkness and into the beauty of life. She is why I love this movie so much.
