Lauren graciously assimilated what was going on, though you can tell from her look that she is really sad inside. The saddest thing of it all is that, yes, they gave her an honorary Oscar later in 2009 in a separate ceremony and she wasn't even invited to come on stage on the Anual Academy Awards ceremony to deliver a speech. Such an iconic actress so underrated.

Bacall's role had Oscar written all over it. The Academy has been recognising those kinds of performances for years. Look at the history books; loud-mouted, cocksure, often histrionic characters get a nomination or even the award sometimes. From Shelley Winters to Estelle Parsons and Marisa Tomei to Mira Sorvino, these kinds of roles always attract attention. I was glad Juliette won, it was a quiet but sweet performance. And she's an amazing actress.

Look at the audacity of Lauren Bacall and her family so smugly assured they would win the prize, and then the eye rolling and self entitlement when the french actress wins instead. Hollywood people think they have the right to be treated like royalty - this was a fabulous wake up call that the old guard are not assured glory.

All of them were great. Joan Allen is my favorite one!! Her role as Elizabeth Proctor was heart-breaking!
P.D. So unfair she was not nominated for Pleasantville :(

Can we just talk about how Ralph Fiennes tends his hand and grips Juliette’s hand 2:45 ? They really make my heart melt every time, since they acted together in Wuthering Heights: beautiful

I still love this win. I may hate The English Patient as a film but I can't deny that it looked beautiful & had some strong performances, particularly Juliette Binoche. I honestly think that the Academy's love for the movie swept her up but despite my distaste for the film, she was absolutely wonderful & it's probably one of the most deserved wins ever (& Juliette was gracious and humble, which is even more wonderful). Also, Marianne Jean-Baptiste was a close 2nd choice, though somewhat a lead.

The time the supporting actress win had more screen time than the lead actress win

I think this also happened in 2003 if I’m not mistaken; Catherine Zeta-Jones in Chicago had more screen time than Nicole Kidman in The Hours

I'd risk saying that The English Patient is the most boring movie I ever seen in my life, but I agree Juliette Binoche is really a great, talented and beautiful actress. She deserved It.

I loved Secrets and Lies. It was so nice to see Lauren Bacall get a nomination after all these years, even though she didn't win.

A movie that shows the horrible truth of war, without firing more that a dozen shots.. I always thought that was quite an accomplishment..
