Henry Selick was hired on Nightmare Before Christmas as a director to facilitate Tim Burton’s vision. Burton worked closely with Danny Elfman in developing all the songs before any screenplay was ever written. Burton had already created and deigned all the characters and look of the world years before. Nightmare Before Christmas took well over a couple years to shoot due to the nature of the medium and what Burton was envisioning. Burton had just completed Edward Scissorhands and was under enormous pressure to return to Warner Brothers for the sequel to Batman, Batman Returns. The only reason Henry Selick has a career and ever had the opportunity to direct a film like Coraline is because of the opportunity given to him by Tim Burton. Tim Burton had the power and juice to get an entire stop motion feature film greenlit when no one else had the power or drive to do so. And all The Nightmare Before Christmas IP was owned by Disney as he created all of it when he worked for them as an animator. Burton’s name had enough clout that Disney took a huge chance on a very unorthodox film in every way. From the story to the medium of stop motion. When The Nightmare Before Christmas was originally released, it was not released as a Disney film. But as a Touchstone Pictures film. A subsidiary of Disney. It was only once it became and established and embraced holiday classic was it that Disney began openly claiming the film.
Technically it is stop-motion animation, not claymation All of the puppets have a metal skeleton then fashioned with rubber. Because this technique is an arduous process, If one had actually used clay, it would be melting under the lights!
I always remember the weather on the day I went to see this, a brisk and cloudy Saturday on its opening weekend. I think a college football game was happening in my town, and I have always found that to be a perfect time to see a movie. As Tim Burton has said, the movie was inspired by how Christmas decorating and shopping almost immediately follows Halloween. It's a funny set-up, twisting "The Night Before Christmas" into "The Nightmare Before Christmas." Not so much a big hit when it came out, even with a lot of publicity, the "hype" came almost ten years later, with lots of merchandise and clothes for the Hot Topic crowd. That revival clearly inspired Tim Burton to make "Corpse Bride." Now that I think of it, I don't think I have gotten around to seeing that one. The creativity with the stop-motion is probably not appreciated as much by new viewers not aware of how that was done, what with even computer animated films being made to look like they are practical puppeted films like this.
Love this movie! One of my favorite Tim Burton films! Nominated for the Oscar for Best Visual Effects but lost to Jurassic Park. It made $100 million dollars against a $24 million dollar budget.
Actually, Tim only wrote the poem the film is based off of. The screenplay was written by the same woman who wrote Edward Scissorhands, I believe. Tim couldn’t direct the film as he was busy with another project, so his friend Henry Selick directed.
The Nightmare Before Christmas is a Christmas movie and I'll die on that hill! It is a moving about celebrating Christmas! My partner says it is Halloween movie so what can I do.
Definitely a classic animated film. The soundtrack alone makes it super memorable. But, to be technical, it isn't Tin Burton's film. He influenced the creation of the characters and direction as a producer, but it is a Henry Selick movie. It's a shame neither of you liked it, but not every person is going to enjoy something others do.

Classic RUDOLPH THE RED NOSED REINDEER stop motion this is not 😂 Oh FYI the creature guy in the wheelchair is voiced by the curmudgeon cigar smoking old guy from CHRISTMAS VACATION (don’t know his name off hand). Music is great in this. Is this re-watchable for you ladies ❓ Angels you always make me smile 😊 no matter what your reactions are to a movie
@@ForceOfLightEntertainment What makes you think I didn't get passed it? I posted my comment and forgot I even did it. On the other hand, your "permission" to allow us to like it is pretty damn condescending.
I was in my twenties when this came out and saw it without high expectations because of the Tim Burton link and thought it was magical. Part of that was likely the low expectations, and getting to see it on the big screen. But if you are trying to understand it as a children's movie that is probably the wrong way to go. It is a movie of dark whimsy. If one has that kind of sense of humor then given the great music and the impressive animation it is going to be magic. If that is not your sense of humor then I can see it being boring.
Natalie, did you get cold halfway through the movie? Because your coat magically appeared. Ladies, as you know, I love your reactions to the movies. But I got to agree with Izzy this is a Halloween movie. But then again, I do argue with my sister about Die Hard being a Christmas movie. She says no, but I say yes. Oh the kids got the Easter Bunny by mistake the first time. Instead of Santa Claus.
@@ForceOfLightEntertainment could I make a movie suggestion please? How about Mickey’s a Christmas Carol? It’s a wholesome movie and the last time I saw it it brought a tear to my eye.
I am with you two ladies. I watched it once and figured I must have missed something. Then I watched it again and I thought, "nope, still not interesting to me." It seems like a worn out trope that was not entertaining on top of the theme of the story being done a thousand times. I have never figured out why it is loved by so many people. When I ask those that I know that love it I do not get a very clear answer. Just boils down to their taste I think. My theory though is that it is seen as a kind of "bad boy" or "rebel" Christmas and those that "love" it do so because they think it puts them in with the cool crowd of rebellious folks. They are not part of the nerdy traditional Christmas lovers, "Those boring people ... booo them!" Which makes them feel cool and good about themselves. But, that is my theory based on the passing grade I received in Psychology 101. 😁 Personally, I like my traditional Christmas. 👍
@@ForceOfLightEntertainment I guess you are not wrong. Opinions are subjective. Overall it's up to the person who appreciates the work and music and hard work put into this film.
@@ForceOfLightEntertainmentI didn’t care for Batman Returns… it was a “Tim Burton movie” not a Batman movie. It wasn’t even about Batman, it was literally a repeat of Edward Scissorhands with the Penguin
Aww... that's unfortunate that you don't like this movie, but it kinda doesn't surprise me. Burton ain't for everyone. I really enjoyed this movie, though.
This was clever and was very entertaining. You didn't explain why you didn't like it at all; only saying that you didn't like it. Not a very interesting reaction.
Why does the movie need a 'point'. It can be a fun adventure and characters can learn or grow, but it doesn't have to be reduced to just having a blatant point. You didn't really explain what exactly you hated about this film, just calling it a kids movie without detailing what the problem was.
In a world divided by who thinks that this is a good Halloween movie vs those who thinks that this is a good Christmas movie; I think it’s a good Thanksgiving movie.
A shame you two didn't appreciate this movie. I suspect maybe your expectations were misled. But on top of that you clearly didn't like any aspect of it, so it was probably more than just missed expectations.
Well, we hope you can allow others to be honest and express their “opinion” Natalie’s daughter loves this movie. We never mind if you disagree but we aren’t going to lie to our audience either:)
If y’all are really looking for a TERRIFIC Animated Movie look at The Incredibles. Or the first slate of PIXAR movies in general from Toy Story to Toy Story 3. If y’all make time for it throughout the year next. Also I won’t say this movie was perfect *The Nightmare Before Christmas* but I’d still as a drawing artist myself and as someone who appreciates certain aspects of animation it’s admirable on that front i named my cat after Celina Kyle which is also short for Sally. 85% from me.
I just want to be clear I never liked this movie and agree with Nat’s daughter it feels more like a Halloween movie despite Christmas being in title and being central to plot, but appreciate the creativity and work they put into it. Such an uninteresting movie as an adult Natalie 👩🏻🦰 is falling asleep 😴 Finally see glasses say Ho Ho Ho 🎅🏻 😊 Hard to say if I would of liked this as a kid either, but as an older boy probably. I do like some kids movies as well, but the story has to pull me in.

Fun Fact: The first fully animated Disney film to not be traditionally animated.
Inspiration Origin Fact: Tim Burton has said the original poem was inspired after seeing the Halloween merchandise display in a store being taken down and replaced by a Christmas display. The juxtaposition of ghouls and goblins with Santa and his reindeer sparked his imagination.
Music Enthusiast Fact: In Oogie Boogie's (Ken Page) Song, there was a story boarded sequence where bugs came out of Oogie's eye and danced on his arm before he belches them off. It was removed from the film because it was considered difficult to make miniature armatures for all the bugs. Another scrapped scene involved his shadow dancing on a rotating orange background and was traditionally animated but ended up being cut for timing. Despite this, the lyrics during these scenes were included in the film's soundtrack.
Math Enthusiast Fact: A crossed-out calculation on Jack's (Chris Sarandon) blackboard seems to equate 3 times the square of pi multiplied by 12 to Christmas Day (a Santa hat). The true numerical answer is approximately 355.31. If the decimal portion is dropped, this then equates to December 21st, the 355th day of the year--hence the crossed-out equation. December 21st however is the first day of winter in the northern hemisphere (winter solstice). It is also the birthday of Jeffrey Katzenberg, the film's executive producer and most often credited for turning Walt Disney Studios and its animation division around after joining in 1984.

Personally, this movie is one I've never really been able to get into.
Being an artist, I appreciate the animation and the skill of the artists, it just didn't capture my attention as much as other films do.
A great reaction as always.
Have a wonderful day both of you, take care. ❤❤ 👈 ( One each 😂 )
We couldn’t get into it either 😂 Thanks for watching!! The next ones coming are a lot more fun!
@@ForceOfLightEntertainment Yeah, i did get the feeling you both weren't feeling this one.
I look forward to seeing it.
I love watching you both, you seem like good fun and if I may say, you're both easy on the eyes, lol! 😂😊
♥️♥️
Chopping this one up must have been fun to pass the copyright lol
At least Disney is one of the easiest studios to work with but musicals are a challenge haha
Harry Potter still the hardest? Seems like blazing saddles will be difficult due to material rather than studio.
❤ I agree with Nat’s daughter on this one. When this first came on cable I would always change channel & finally saw appreciating the creativity, but one and done for me for Tim Burton film. EDWARD SCISSORHANDS with Winona as a blonde oddly I like more and you ladies might as well. Is this re-watchable for you ladies ❓
Angels you always make me smile 😊 no matter what your reactions are to a movie
It is stop-motion animation, not necessarily clay.
It isn't an issue of if you don't mind that we like it, but an issue of if we mind that you don't like it. You're the odd ones out.
Yes, and adults typically can get pass that :)
@@ForceOfLightEntertainment What makes you think I didn't get passed it? I posted my comment and forgot I even did it.
On the other hand, your "permission" to allow us to like it is pretty damn condescending.
@@DMichaelAtLarge There is nothing in the comment about permission. Glad you got past it:)
Catherine O'Hara did the voice of Sally and Shock
She is great!
I love nightmare before Christmas
Ladies…. I was 22!!!! God I’m old.
Just mature;)
It's a Christmas movie.
Halloween ends and the rest of the movie is about Christmas.
Agreed! Christmas is critical to the plot.
After seeing it I believe it is a Christmas movie because Christmas is the most vital element to the plot 😁
@@ForceOfLightEntertainment could I make a movie suggestion please? How about Mickey’s a Christmas Carol? It’s a wholesome movie and the last time I saw it it brought a tear to my eye.
@@derangedlunaticakad.l.7030 Will keep in mind DL! We actually have already recorded all our reactions for Dec!
@@ForceOfLightEntertainment okey-dokey.
My one and only gripe... How did you miss the Easter Bunny?
🤷🏻♀️😂
How did you miss The Easter Bunny?
🤷🏻♀️
Have you watched Ernest Saves Christmas ⛄🎁 yet
Check out all of his movies they're really funny 😂😅
I haven’t!
@@ForceOfLightEntertainment
It'll be a great movie for Christmas 🎄
Go see Godzilla Minus One. It's incredible!
Personally, I like my traditional Christmas. 👍
Classic movie ladies
It definitely is!
@@ForceOfLightEntertainment for sure! Sorry for the late reply it’s my movie day
@@GENGHISKHAN-hk3qs enjoy!
@@ForceOfLightEntertainment thanks!
Haha its ok to be wrong. One if not the best stop motion animation movies. Homegirl gave a 0 out of 10, what world does she live in? Fentanyl world? 😅
You can’t really be wrong about an opinion:) As we say our rating is based on “level of enjoyment” Glad you love this though!
@@ForceOfLightEntertainment I guess you are not wrong. Opinions are subjective. Overall it's up to the person who appreciates the work and music and hard work put into this film.
I love that movie
Batman Returns = Christmas movie!!!
Agreed!
@@ForceOfLightEntertainmentI didn’t care for Batman Returns… it was a “Tim Burton movie” not a Batman movie. It wasn’t even about Batman, it was literally a repeat of Edward Scissorhands with the Penguin
@@nsasupporter7557Batman’s back story was already established in the 1989 movie. What more do you want?
@@84maker well… I want a Batman movie 🤷♂️
Not a repeat of Edward Scissorhands, which was what Batman Returns was.
@@nsasupporter7557 give me an example of what a Batman movie is in your opinion then?
Aww... that's unfortunate that you don't like this movie, but it kinda doesn't surprise me. Burton ain't for everyone. I really enjoyed this movie, though.
AL go Rythim ❤🙂💯✅️
This was clever and was very entertaining. You didn't explain why you didn't like it at all; only saying that you didn't like it. Not a very interesting reaction.
Can you finish the Harry Potter movies please.
We are going to start mixing those in again in January! Stay tuned!
@@ForceOfLightEntertainment ❤️
Why does the movie need a 'point'. It can be a fun adventure and characters can learn or grow, but it doesn't have to be reduced to just having a blatant point.
You didn't really explain what exactly you hated about this film, just calling it a kids movie without detailing what the problem was.
Just didn’t connect to the characters. There are things I appreciate but it wasn’t for me. It’s great if it’s for you:)
Great movie ❤😊
In a world divided by who thinks that this is a good Halloween movie vs those who thinks that this is a good Christmas movie; I think it’s a good Thanksgiving movie.
A shame you two didn't appreciate this movie. I suspect maybe your expectations were misled. But on top of that you clearly didn't like any aspect of it, so it was probably more than just missed expectations.
Think it’s just not our cup of tea 🍵
💙💛📽️🎞️📹🎥📺🇸🇪😀😉
Take my 👍 back 😤
Well, we hope you can allow others to be honest and express their “opinion” Natalie’s daughter loves this movie. We never mind if you disagree but we aren’t going to lie to our audience either:)
Very disappointed.
How can you not love this movie.
We were disappointed too haha! It happen. We are glad you love it though!

I mean considering your opinions on other films, its safe you to say you're just contrarians lol
We really aren’t haha
Do I have to smash the like button? I want to poke it. Can I poke it?.....poke.
You 2 give me peace, thank you for that
*Riot*
I'm sure You both must've watched this movie already
Well you would be wrong.
Not a fan of Burton or his films, other then 'Sleepy Hollow' and 'Dark Shadows', but still fun watching you two react to it ladies.
Thank you!!
Agent Double L and Red Nat always bring xmas spirrit... watching is NOT a nightmare
Thank you!!
It's not directed by Tim Burton.
Well it’s his movie:) our bad
@@ForceOfLightEntertainment everything OK :)
Twice now. I hit the skip ad button and twice now it just plays more ads.
We apologize. YT picks what kind of ads are selected:)
I wonder if it's a guy thing. I loved it, but my wife hated it!
Interesting.
This is one of my favorite movies, but I’ve always been a weird girl.
I just want to be clear I never liked this movie and agree with Nat’s
daughter it feels more like a Halloween movie despite Christmas being in title and being central to plot, but appreciate the creativity and work they put into it.
I don't have any nostalgia feels for this one. It was never on rotation in my family. Batman Returns and Die Hard were my Christmas movies.
Well after watching it we don’t either 😂
Honest, never dug this movie. I'm with you two not my cup of tea, and I like some really weird stuff lol
😂😂
Obviously you’re not into that weird of stuff if this film is too much for you.
@@KrazyKat007 Sometimes a movie just doesn’t resonate with a person. Glad for those who enjoy it though!
Don't get the hype for this movie. It's boring, has a totally dull story and is terribly paced.
