Fun fact: The speaking voice of Jack is Chris Sarandon, the same actor who plays Prince Humperdinck in The Princess Bride. Jack's singing voice is provided by Danny Elfman himself, who, before he was a movie composer, used to be the lead singer of an '80s band you might remember as Oingo Boingo. Tim Burton was the creator of this, but the legendary stop motion director Henry Selick was the one who did the actual work of directing and making it come to life.

Danny Elfman's first film score was for "The Forbidden Zone" from 1980, written and directed by his brother Richard, Danny's band are credited as "The Mystic Knights of the Oingo Boingo" and the soundtrack features old jazz and swing tunes and revisions of Cab Calloway songs.
It was because of that movie that Burton wanted Elfman to score "Pee-Wee's Big Adventure".
"The Forbidden Zone" is a ridiculously comic and hilariously offensive fun movie which features actors in Blackface but they are Black actors, so it's offensive at a glance but then it's ridiculous because it's not offensive at all.
The movie is based on old Betty Boop cartoons and the plot closely but loosely follows the plot of Betty Boop's "Snow-White" and has sensibilities lifted from Ralph Bakshi's "Wizards" from 1977.
The theme from "The Forbidden Zone" was used as the theme music to the old "Dilbert" animated series.

"Just because I cannot see it, doesn't mean I can't believe it!"
Fun Fact: Tim Burton has said the original poem was inspired after seeing Halloween merchandise display in a store being taken down and replaced by a Christmas display. The juxtaposition of ghouls and goblins with Santa and his reindeer sparked his imagination.
Music Enthusiast Fact: In Oogie Boogie's Song, there was a story boarded sequence where bugs came out of Oogie's eye and danced on his arm before he belches them off. It was removed from the film because it was considered difficult to make miniature armatures for all the bugs. Another scrapped scene involved his shadow dancing on a rotating orange background and was traditionally animated but ended up being cut for timing. Despite this, the lyrics during these scenes were included in the film's soundtrack.
Math Enthusiast Fact: A crossed-out calculation on Jack's blackboard seems to equate 3 times the square of pi multiplied by 12 to Christmas Day (a Santa hat). The true numerical answer is approximately 355.31. If the decimal portion is dropped, this then equates to December 21st, the 355th day of the year--hence the crossed-out equation. December 21st however is the first day of winter in the northern hemisphere (winter solstice). It is also the birthday of Jeffrey Katzenberg, the film's executive producer and most often credited for turning Walt Disney Studios and its animation division around after joining in 1984.

So... not a Disney movie. Acquired by Disney later. All music written by (and Jack's voice/singing) by Danny Elfman (composer of most of Burton's films). This film is actually not directed by Tim Burton, but produced by him. Masterwork.

    • @scottalynch

It’s always been a Disney film. Tim Burton was originally a Disney animator. It was released by Touchstone, Disney is the parent company of Touchstone

    • @GForce_ART
      @GForce_ART ปีที่แล้ว +1

@@scottalynch I don't think it's considered a "Disney Film" in, in the canon of what is "Disney". There wasn't the same kind of oversight by Disney as would have happened with a 90s 2D animated film under the main Disney banner. Merch and adverts for the film did not have Disney slapped on it until the 2000s. Burton worked for Disney briefly (In the Frankenweenie days), but that did not really go well (in Disney's eyes) as it was too weird. It has come full circle that Burton works with Disney in main-line live action titles now...but that has (in my opinion) totally softened and destroyed his ability to make anything good or "edgy" (he lives firmly in safe green screen CGI land now). Disney is a parent company to many things (and was then too), but I don't really think, at the time, that association was being made (and if anything, Disney was probably distancing themselves after Batman Returns backlash). I dunno for sure, just speculating. It's hard to believe now...but Burton was kinda in and out of favor before totally succumbing to the Disney machine in the 2000s. Worth noting, despite this move being called "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas", I feel the director, Henry Selick, gets really overshadowed. He is really the technical mastermind here.

    • @scottalynch
      @scottalynch ปีที่แล้ว

@@GForce_ART no, it’s not a “Disney film” in the traditional sense. I was stating that it wasn’t acquired later by Disney. Touchstone, Miramax, etc are/were part of Disney.

I think what makes the songs in this movie so unique compared to other movies is that they are more of what you'd get when at a theater play. The performers are the ones carrying the songs more than the music. Gives it a much more personal feel.

Edward Scissorhands looks so much like Jack Skellington.
Tim Burton did not direct Nightmare, except for a couple scenes.
He was actually contacted by his friend Caroline Thompson who informed him that Disney, where he used to work, was using his sketchbook to which he owned the copyright to make a movie, and he threatened to sue Disney, which would have put the production on hold, indefinitely, if not permanently, so Disney caved.
That's why it's called "Tim Burton's the Nightmare Before Christmas" instead of "Walt Disney's The Nightmare Before Christmas".
There are movies like "Monkey Bone" that were promoted as "By the people who brought you The Nightmare Before Christmas" which actually made people think they were watching a Tim Burton movie but they were actually Henry Selick movies, who directed and designed the exaggerated body movements used in Nightmare, and he also made "Coraline".

A number of years ago for one of the big anniversaries of Nightmare before Christmas Disney got a large number of "hardcore" or alternative artists to do covers of the movies music bands like Korn, Marilyn Manson, fallout boy excerera and included in the album is an prolog and epilog by Danny Elfmen as Santa in which we find out that Jack and Sally did end up having kids. 0:41 - It's both.
2:17 - A Nightmare Before Christmas was originally released under Disney's Touchstone imprint, which was the studio Disney released more mature movies under to protect it's squeaky-clean wholesome image. The same thing happened with Who Framed Roger Rabbit. Since the movie became iconic, Disney has fully embraced it.
    6:05 - He _is_ a politician.
14:00 - That's what a minor key will do for ya.
15:35 - Those are Matryoshka, more commonly known as Russian Nesting Dolls.
24:35 - Several images from the original cut of the movie were censored before release because the studio thought they went a step too far. The pumpkin that the vampires are playing hockey with was originally a severed head.

I remember when I first saw this as a kid, I was terrified of Jack and Oogie Boogie, but more so of Boogie, because of that song of his and the whole "You ain't going nowhere" he said to Santa. Plus those damn toys scared me, like that Scary Teddy bear-doll thing and Duck chasing after the kids. I even had some nightmares from this movie, like Boogie eating my little brother and Jack leaving behind some scary Centipede toy that chased after me, and I yelled "Fuck you Jack!!" Though with that said, I love this movie, and I even remember re-watching it as a kid into my adult years. Like Every Halloween and Christmas, I watched it over and over, because of how enjoyable it was, and it nurtured me into my Goth phase that's still going strong.
This movie deserves more praises, and be a fitting holiday movie to show on Christmas and Halloween, Hell, even Thanksgiving. Oh and JL, There is a Nightmare before Thanksgiving, it's called "Last night before Thanksgiving" especially for me, because I'm not a thanksgiving fan. Turkey never agrees with me, and I end up getting sick.
Another thing I loved about this film, it introduced to me, the concept of romance. Like I've always fantasize about walking up to a beautiful girl and singing that last song of the movie to her, or her singing it to me while sitting alone in a graveyard, sharing a duet before the night is over, knowing in our hearts we are meant to be together. Though, that fantasy is dead to me, since in 2020, I realized romance is dead, and no woman will truly love me outside of what I can provide in terms of finances. So, I'm cynical to the concept now, but still can't help but dream about meeting the right person who will sing that tune, making my cynicism melt. Even though I know for sure, it won't happen. Hell, 2020 just confirms it based on my two ex-girlfriends and a long list of dates that ghost me.

This was a lot of fun, I always watch it around Halloween. 😄 What I like about Jack and his people is that they really weren’t out to hurt anyone, their goal was just to scare people. They were naive. 😅

I'm a fan of animation, too. This one is done quite well, lots of fun. A film I think you might enjoy is "Big Fish" (2003). Cheers.

I remember seeing the trailer on TV in 1993 when I was 4 years old. I saw Santa being kidnapped and it scared the shit out of me. Didn't actually see the film for another decade. lol

You should check out the video of the vocal group VoicePlay covering the Oogie Boogie song. It’s amazing!

I absolutely love this film, simple and creative and entertaining, and the stop-motion animation is beautifully done 🎃🎄
This is occasionally performed somewhat live at the Hollywood Bowl, it's a real treat seeing Danny Elfman doing "What's This?" or Paul Reubens and Catherine O’Hara with Danny as Lock, Shock, and Barrel for "Kidnap the Sandy Claws" (Weird Al subbed for one of them one year, that was a hoot), but my favorite is when Ken Page sings as Oogie Boogie 👻😀 Might be videos still up around here, highly recommend having a look because he is SO fun to watch.

Its Tim Burtons idea, but Henry Selick directed and animated it. And Danny Elfman did the songs... before he did movie scores he had a rock band called Oingo Boingo... they did the theme song for Weird Science.

24:37 Don't worry, it's just a pumpkin puck on the screen and you're not even watching in 3D.

Hey J, one of the cool things about this being a Disney film is that during the Christmas season the imagineers at both Disney parks here in America change the Haunted Mansion ride to be Nightmare Before Christmas themed! It’s really fun! Also, the animation in this film was done using small stop motion instead of cgi. I love your videos, they always make me smile :)

Tim Burton designed the characters and wrote the script, but wasn't the director. He was busy filming the first Michael Keaton Batman movie.
