A wind turbine they have been hiding for 138 years

  • This wind turbine was reported to the German Patent Office on August 6, 1882 by the German innovator Carl Wenzel, and the following year he received a patent. After him, another 20-30 innovators worked on its development. Nevertheless, this type of wind turbine does not exist in the professional literature. Development can only be traced in patent files.
It works in very light winds, and can also work in stormy winds if a sail collection mechanism is installed on the sails. With such sails that can be assembled, they can also be placed on sailboats, one on the bow and one on the stern. When passing a sailboat under the bridge, the rotor can be easily placed in horizontal positions, and after passing under the bridge, it can be raised again. The generator can be placed on the bottom of the ship and serve as ballast.

I would almost consider this a type of "Darrieus" turbine, rather than a "Savonius" turbine. This works more like air foils, rather than scoops. It's very clever, how an air vane is used to orient a crank pin, so the sails know when to flare out down wind, and align themselves up wind, for maximum efficiency and minimum drag. Simple, reliable, and, serviceable. I like having the generator at ground level, where it's easy to work on. This is the closest thing I've seen, to a vertical axis turbine, that can compete with a horizontal axis turbine on the standpoint of efficiency. Great video, thanks for posting!

A big advantage is also a simple and cheap stand.
With large wind turbines with a horizontal rotor, 70 percent of the construction cost is the base.

      🔴 What Is Islam? ⚠️
🔴 Islam is not just another religion.
🔵 It is the same message preached by Moses, Jesus and Abraham.
🔴 Islam literally means ‘submission to God’ and it teaches us to have a direct relationship with God.
🔵 It reminds us that since God created us, no one should be worshipped except God alone.
🔴 It also teaches that God is nothing like a human being or like anything that we can imagine.
🌍 The concept of God is summarized in the Quran as:
📖 { “Say, He is God, the One. God, the Absolute. He does not give birth, nor was He born, and there is nothing like Him.”} (Quran 112:1-4)[4] 📚
🔴 Becoming a Muslim is not turning your back to Jesus.
🔵 Rather it’s going back to the original teachings of Jesus and obeying him.

[English translation] On the axis you can hang 3 rods of one meter with a weight of 1kg at the tip of each one, so that when a lot of wind blows, the rods are lifted by centrifugal force and slow down the rotation, but accumulate potential energy. when there is little wind the turbine keeps turning faster due to the accumulated inertia of the 3 weights. It does not prevent starting the turn because the rods hang retracted against the axis, but it does cost more to brake because the rods lift the weight of their tips while maintaining inertia. works as a shock absorber. the speed change is smoother and the turn more constant.

(7:35) & (7:51) is why I suggested extended blades that block the wind flow incoming to the back or breaking side of the blades, all radiating out at enough angle so not only is it reducing the breaking effect of the wind on the back of the blades BUT
They also make a funnel for the wind that normally would causing breaking, to instead be on the power side of the blade, creating a vacuum effect on the breaking side sucking it forward so its adding power to the rotation,
Add to this a slight angle to the blades so when rotating it creates a bit of lift to reduce wear and tear on the bearings, the blades are sitting on, and lengthen time between repair jobs, and you get one heck of a change in dynamic,
now something most don't realize too, though is the blades that block air flow on the opposite side of the breaking side block coupled with the breaking side actually mean the whole of the rotating blade portion is now consuming a greater cross section of wind than the blades normally can reach, so the wind is being focused from outside the width of the rotation too, much like putting mirrors on either side of a solar panel will increase the sunlight by redirecting light that would miss the panel instead onto the panel

With wind turbines, the most important thing is to have as many working hours as possible. This reduces the cost of investing in batteries. In low winds, it is important to have a high turbine efficiency in order to achieve as many operating hours as possible. But with strong winds, safety is more important than efficiency. By installing a mechanism for collecting sails in each sail, this wind turbine can work even in the strongest wind, which increases the total number of working hours.

However, people reading comments will see other people's (not just mine) comments of the rough welds and will get the idea that what they are seeing, is not optimal or even preferable(if they know nothing about welding). It doesn't mean the welds won't work fine, it's sorta unknown from visually looking at it. My comment was purely constructive observation and conveyed all that needed to be said. This is very much like a design I thought of with ships in a circular canal. There would be a gearbox with an arm connected to the ships and it would sail around in circles. Sails develop 0.015 hp/sqr ft of sail @ 7-10 kts wind speed, 0.020 hp/sqr ft of sail @ 11-16 kts '' , 0.040 hp/sqr ft of sail @ 17-21 kts ", and 0.070 hp/sqr ft of sail @ 22-27 kts ". 100 sq feet of sail at slow wind speed would give you 15 horsepower. Used sail boats are not expensive. I don't know if water friction is higher than rolling resistance like if you were to make rolling sailboats instead of floating. Just figured a floating one would require less parts that could break. Another alternative would be giant circular trains that have sails. The train could literally wrap all the way back to its tail. Each car could have a generator and a rotating sail. the tracks could deliver the power to the grid. Easy as pi. It would appear that this would be a little bit more bird friendly. Never heard stories in the Navy about birds dying from sails. I also have it on good authority that this design causes less cancer. If less than zero is a thing. Seriously though lower rpms and higher torque seems like a good thing in a wind turbine design to me. Anyway this is kinda like having four sailboats in a circle, without the boats. In my design the sails either fold or roll up then unfurl. For the matter of the train you could have an elevated train travel around a city, the whole track would be full of cars and each one has a sail. Each sail is 1000 sq feet. 58 percent of the car can generate electricity while 42 percent are returning. At 7-10 knots that is about 1.5 megawatts, on a bypass that is 30 miles long. More than the power required for the city of Miami. The rail cars would cost 250 million dollars. Apparently rr cars cost over 100,000$ I figured without the heavy walls but including the generators and sails it would be about the same. The generator could simply be connected to the axle and they would all turn at the same speed. The same thing could be done with trailers on a road. Probably lots cheaper than 100 grand a car. The system would last years and provide lots of jobs repairing sails. Or we could use solid sails. Just a thought.

I doubt you have efficiency specs for this dinosaur. Are you even taking into account the Betz limit? Do you mean to say each "sail" should be 4x4 meters, or all of them combined? There is under 2.9 KW of energy in 4x4 meters of wind at 10mph. After the 59% Betz limit reduction, you're left with about 1.7 KW. The avg household uses 29 KW/hr, so your genny would have to run at 17 hr. per day at min. of 10mph if your sails total near 16 sq. meters.

In other words he doesn't know the output at any particular windspeed, so can't calculate it's efficiency at even a single windspeed either, much less show you a graph of something like watts per mph.
No drag windturbine approaches the efficiency of an airfoil windturbine. This MAY be somewhat an improvement over a simple Savonius design, but Darrieus is better and the ubiquitous HAWT (horizontal axis wind turbine you see far more often than any others) is the most efficient so far. This old device is a relatively primitive drag type device precursor to the cycloturbine airfoil design which was a good improvement.
Don't go all ga-ga gullible over something that has been outclassed for over a century.
There is a known amount of energy in the wind at any certain speed encountering a wind turbine of any certain size. The Betz limit of 59% is the most energy that can be taken out of the wind interacting with an ideal turbine. It has to do with letting enough wind to pass throuh the turbine to not interfere with higher speed wind in front getting through at an optimum rate. Different designs can be precisely compared by how close they approach the 59% maximum at whatever windspeed they were designed to encounter most often.
This old device has long been left behind by improved science & technology.

Definitely a drag translator. Lets see, old irrigation piping for torque tube and strucutral support tower slapped together using a handy oxygen-aceltylene welder from the tractor shop, OK, but 95% of all fatique weld failures are due to improper heat treatment of the weld joint. And, all VAWTS suffer impulse loading through the drive train and lateral (perpendicular to rotating axis) through the support structure. The generator must be an alternator since there is no gearbox between the torque tube and generator... charging batteries? Not sure what the wind vane is for, since all VAWTS should not care about the wind direction. Overall, looks like a fun project to clean up a lot of junk hanging around the farm. I'd recommend a wearing a hard hat though while standing under the rotor... whether its turning or not. Ciao for now!

With its ability to turn the sails flat to the down wind, and feather edge into the wind, this "active" sail configuration is far more efficient, than vertical axis turbines with fixed angle sails. This one even uses an air vane on a differential, to phase the angles of the sails, regardless of the direction of the wind. This design is definitely worth a try!
