My wife was conned by her rich uncle to sign up as the guarantor for her father's medical bills. He promised to pay the bills if she would be there to make medical decisions etc. He made a deal where he was going to pay for rehab and medical services up front with the facility he was at.
Things take a turn for the worse. The uncle stops paying, her dad needs a few surgeries to save him.
After the second surgery the bills racked up to $40k. My wife comes crying to me explaining we needed to come up with this money so her dad can get a surgey. I freak out when I realize the gravity of the situation. I had been busting my butt to pay for hotels and plane tickets for her to care for her dad out of state, while trying to pay off debt and she made a decision without talking to me that is about to bankrupt us. We were broke to start with then needed to come up with 40k almost overnight.
Luckily their was a crazy Aunt who wanted decision making authority and we made her take over as guarantor to get it. We paid off the balance and signed over authority to the aunt. You don't get the authority without the responsiblility. She elected for some expensive procedures and got hit with a $80k bill then yelled at us. I told her we gave her exactly what she wanted. Who do you think was paying for things?
I have $20k left to pay off. The whole thing ended up costing us almost $60k. Which was an entire year's salary at the time.
    Our marriage barely survived.
