    Back when the scooby had relevance. Now it’s just another AWD 4 door car with more horsepower than you strictly need, Subaru need to put it back where it belongs, on a WRC rally stage.

    • @SparrowNoblePoland
      @SparrowNoblePoland 2 ปีที่แล้ว +10

      The problem is it's too long... Impreza was initially developed as an A8 car, which meant it had to be just a slightly modified road car. Which meant in road version it had 4WD drive and everything and it was long. Same as Lancer, and hence these cars looked so spectacular on stages, driver had to really throw them into the corners heavily using Scandinavian Flick to make them turn. You could give it a modern rally suspension, but you won't change the fact it's too long to keep up with square geometry cars of today. BRZ would have been a better basis for a rally car, but then I bet fails some current homologation requirements.

    • @Jimrlst
      @Jimrlst 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      @@SparrowNoblePoland I don't think it fails the current homologations (from what I could find) but the rwd is severely inferior to awd

    • @SparrowNoblePoland
      @SparrowNoblePoland 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@Jimrlst Even if it wouldn't fail, it would probably screw up. The current homologation demands that car should be quite heavy, but allows square dimensions. Impreza/WRX or however Subaru calls the car this week, would have screwed up heavily. It doesn't mean it's bad car, rather that current WRC rules are heavily corrupted.

    At such jumps not only the spoilers matter, but also the wheel speed. If the wheels slow down after liftoff (because of breaking) the car gets a torque rotating it forwards (the bigger the wheels and speed, the greater the torque), and the opposite happens if you accelerate the wheels after jumping (by keeping your foot on the gas pedal).
    Perhaps with the big wing the car had a tendency to tilt up when jumping, but without it it nosedived, and even a master driver can be tricked by this.

    There is trick that if you'll brake for a bit and then full throttle right before the jump you can keep the nose up

    • @BrunoR8
      @BrunoR8  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      But then you would need to lift off the throttle. Specially in Finland, the idea you don't depend on those tricks to keep the car balance in the air and don't lose time braking. Here the situation is that the car has just lost the rear spoiler.

  • @MrMotoMike

    Does a spoiler/wing really have that much effect? I know it applies some downforce, but I think this was caused by something else, maybe a hard break right before takeoff which started throwing the weight to the front. Maybe the terrain was different from other cars tearing up the track between each of those comparison clips.
    They stated it dipped that much due to missing the spoiler and compared it to the car that stayed level WITH a spoiler.

    • @BrunoR8
      @BrunoR8  2 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Yes, it does. Aerodynamic forces start to be significant in cars above 70km/h. In Finland, they have high averages and peaks 195km/h. Consider also the surface area Subaru's spoiler had at that model, which brings significant downforce. For sure not like F1, but for a car that weighs 1200kg, any unbalance will make it pivot. For the WRC they not only made the lightest as possible respecting the minimum, but also as centralized as possible making use of ballast plates in the rear and use wind tunnels to optimize aerodynamics force for conditions like that in the video.

      If you want to see extreme use of aerodynamics watch some F1 races... With F1 cars you can actually see what happens when your car have damaged front/rear wings

    nah he did keep right on that jump. He was visibily way more on the right than the left, its the loss of wing that caused the shitty landing being the reason for him going off of the road.
