Happy birthday, Greg! Have a great fishing trip. That's nice that Mamma Hoss is sharing her boat with you. Was just talking about BER in your FB group about a week ago. I transplanted 11 varieties of indeterminate tomato plants about 7 weeks ago. I have 1 tomato plant that has BER on 2 different tomato clusters. I make my own potting mix with organic peat moss, perlite, worm castings, organic granular fertilizer, gypsum pellets, dolomite garden lime, Azomite, and bone meal powder. When I transplanted the tomato plants, I put blood meal, bone meal and Mykos in the hole. I recently found out from a member in your Facebook group that the dolomite lime I used is magnesium, which is similar to calcium but because it has a stronger charge, it can render calcium inactive in the soil and cause BER. Maybe that's what happened. I got some calcium nitrate and am going to treat the containers this weekend hoping to stay ahead of anymore tomato plants having calcium issues. Going to use it on my bell pepper plants too. Which do you think is better, gypsum powder or pelletized gypsum? Thank you for sharing your expertise about BER. Much appreciated.
Happy birthdays! I don't think I'll forget "root to fruit" now. This was so educational. The things I'm learning now at a ripe ol' age just irks the fire out of me that I didn't know an inkling of it in yesteryear. All I'm saying is -- if you've got a lot of growing to do ... take notes and learn it. There will be a test.
Late to the show again. Life seems to get in the way of stuff sometimes..... Oh well. Let's see.... The Old Goat is checking out the red onion harvest behind Mama Hoss. Greg, you know you need to get one for Essie also. She is a Southern Girl and will want one like her brothers (but she has a little growing to do before she can have it!!!). Blossom End Rot.... gardeners bane for sure! My experience is use dolomitic powder (lime) and regular spoon fed calcium enhanced fertilizers along with regular and even drip irrigation and you should have no issues.
Greg I put cotton hulls that have composted for a year in my garden. Now I know you will prolly laugh but it works for me. When I started using electroculter antennas which excites the microbs and all the nutrients in the soil which helps my tomatoes to absorb the calcium I put in my soil where I plant my tomatoes. I don't have to worry with end rot. Old goat is at the red onions!
Evening folks. That's good info never considered to much water being an issue with getting calcium to the fruit, but it makes since thanks for the show. Old Goat is up in the red onions.
The old goat is hiding behind the red onions !! Happy early Birthday Hoss !! Hope y’all catch enough to make the grease stink !! Y’all have some fun !!
I have been experimenting with making eggshell powder after drying them in a low temp oven. Then adding vinegar to the powder in a jar without a lid. Wait half a day, then put the lid on it. Wait a week or so, then add water to dilute it. Wait a few more days, then use it as an amendment. I am still working on the ratios, but so far so good.
I believe I had Blossom Rot happen to me last year here in North Dakota on my watermelons. My fruit would get about forearm size and then start developing on the end on the melon a little small brown spot, 1 or 2 weeks later half the melon would have it and start softening. I have a small garden maybe 10x6 or so. Long story short ZERO melons last year. This is my 4th year gardening, so I am very much a novice still. I plan on rotating everything this year. Placed tomatoes which are from the 1850 Indiana variety which is my home state, then I am going to move my peppers to the other side of the garden and in the center not sure what I am going to do. I thought maybe building a tiny flower garden, that would attract Lady Bugs, Lacewings, Humming Birds, Bees, to just help out. Here in North Dakota we are just now starting to till the land and seed as we are just now warming up, but have had lots of rain. So it's been slow going. I been noticing this year the decent amount of night crawlers in the ground this year. I have already seen more than I normally have in recent times. I have been trying to do a Bibical-type gardening concept that is American. So maybe this Natural stuff is working I have no idea lol. The Goal has been building back good healthy top soil.
Calcium, I manage calcium levels in my soil closely with frequent soil testing and use bone meal as my soil tends to also be deficient in phosphorous so its a easy solution to getting nutrients back into the soil. Has both phosphrous and has calcium and some nitrogen and trace elements so its a rich source for calcium to prevent blossom end rot. One of my raised beds has such a high level now of calcium and phosphrous I have had to back off on amending it.
I had all my tomatoes planted I got from y'all but then came a freak hailstorm and it chopped them up. I had some of yours seeds so started more and planting them tomorrow. They were doing so well but the hail just killed them. Made me cry. But better tomatoes than roof or windows! Have to look on the bright side
Goat’s in the onions. I place a handful of gypsum in every spot I plant a squash seed or tomato/pepper transplants. My temptress corn is looking great. I can’t wait to try it, first time growing it. I’m thinking of trying Eden sweet corn this fall. Thanks for the helpful videos.
I've actually used sticks of chalk at the base of the plant near the roots. This has been very helpful. We had a little bit of blossom rot last year. We put calcium nitrate on at planting however, we may not have put enough.
Greg, I watched one of your videos 4 years ago on this subject and have practiced feeding triple 20 through my drip line and then calcium nitrate through my drip line every other feeding per your suggestion, and I feed that to my peppers, tomatoes and squash, and I have never had a problem with blossom end rot since! You have helped me so much with gardening thank you!!
it's been drummed into me (before) that it's always about moisture and that calcium is always plenty in soil, for blossom end rot. while it's true this can happen that deeper soil dries out, especially in my climate, i have found out that my soil readily leaches calcium. i've been and will be applying a lot more calcium throughout the year, and i'll try my best to reduce ph, but that is secondary to a lack of calcium. i've used calcium thiosulfate some years ago, but couldnt get my hands on any this time.....so i dug in several bags of hydrated lime.
Since I bought my red snappers from y’all they have done great I have them on drip and I use my injector to shoot the triple 20. I got yallygypsum and added at bloomset and the leaves are dark green and maters are huge wife fried up some green maters tonight delicious
When I plant a tomato I put calcium with a little fertilizer and epsom salt is there enough water it in real good but after listening to you I will no longer put Epsom salt thank you
Moma Hoss, do you have a video out on a good canner for beginners? I think I want an electric one. Any reccomendations on a good one to get. Its just me so I dont need a huge one. But I would like to learn canning and water bathing. Thank you, ya'll are very much appreciated! You and Mr Greg both.
I try to use cal/ mag every 2 weeks and have done well with everything except my squash but I think it is pollinating issue. O black ends just tiny plants that stay yellow or white then rots. I try to hand pollinate if I have male handy.
Watching this one this morning again as well. Love this kind of show. Great info. Good job. One question, how long does it take for that pelleted gypsum to start breaking down? You guys should carry a powder too.😉
A simple reminder and Blossom End Rot and cures that WORK! Interested in that hatchet. Could not get a good "name" to look it up. Then no link here either?
Last year I had a couple of plants that had blossom rot but not too much trouble my question is straw OK to put under my tomato plants for weed control to keep my ground a little cooler. My garden gets full sun almost all day long didn’t know straw or needles Mulch would be better or should I just leave it alone? Thank you for all the good knowledge that you give always love watching.
Over-application of gypsum can strip essential nutrients from your soil, and this can harm plant growth. 1 It can also strip out too much sodium from soils that are already low in salt.
I've only had problems with blossom end rot once fortunately. But I've been having issues with my potatoes and tomatoes for a few years now. Not exactly sure what it is but I need help. My potatoes and tomatoes will get about knee high, looking great and then the leaves curl and the plant starts drooping and dies all within about 48 hours. One after another until they're all dead. Already lost about a third of my potatoes and all of my cherry tomatoes. Tomato yellow curly leaf virus is the closest thing I can figure that would affect both. But I see no signs of pests other than an occasional leaf foot bug. Haven't seen white flies. Any ideas? I've used spinosad and bug buster 2 alternatively every week.
I had a really hard time listening to the info because of the pea shelling…not trying to be ugly just letting y’all know for next time. 🤪Y’all are great!!!
I wrote "squash". Just flipping squash. Dumbest thing I've ever done cause this variety does NOT work in SWFL. Oh. I bought 2 varieties this year so I cant tell based off of my orders. It didn't produce anything at all. I will tell you tho that the cue ball Zucchini is the highest producing Zucchini I've ever grown and it's freaking delicious and smooth, even when it gets over a softball size!
Great show, as always! I love it when you get on your “blossom end rot” soapbox, Greg! Preach it brother! Happy Birthday and good luck fishing!

Gypsum can take months to break down into calcium and sulfate pieces through regular rainfall and irrigation.

What about your complete organic fertilizer as a calcium source., Your customer service says this is blossom end rot, tut I don't think so?

yes, as long as no fungi or bacteria is present.
