By the way, my mini me cucumbers are kicking in🥒 Overall, all my cucumbers are doing fantastic. I’ve already done a succession. Planting of some lemon cucumbers alphabet Arminian longs. They’re already sprouting up. I always focus on one thing a year and then the rest are just I do got some tomatoes. They’re gonna be extras. I got some cantaloupe melons watermelons , I’m waiting my beans my Poll beans there’s sprouting I started flowers today. It’s a lot of work, but you gotta pace yourself.(I’m up to 25 jars of pick)
So we’ve been doing house projects and I’m in my late 50s and it has been really hard with this heat. I find myself I can probably hang for like an hour and a half and I’m a sweater so I sweat very easy and I come in drenched I took a shower then I might wait till about 7:30 and go out to the plants and I still was sweating. It’s been so hard. I’m drinking plenty of water, but I can see that I can only, take about an hour and a half outside is dangerously hot, humid really really bad.. like you said you have to know your limits because that he is dangerous
About 20 years ago one of my favorite neighbors who was very healthy, always riding his bike all the time. He had just retired and was only about 57. He was push mowing in August and got overheated and collapsed. The EMT's came out and revived him, cooled him down and gave him a stern warning to not go back outside. He didn't listed and he collapsed again and couldn't be revived! It was heartbreaking for his wife and children!
I’ve had one heatstroke. I was painting a fence in the shade but it hit and I was so disoriented I couldn’t think to get on my side by side and go in, I was trying to walk. So scary
Jeff from East Tennessee! I am 55 years old!! The BEAR got me about 3 weeks ago! It was my first time!! I worked outside all day on a Saturday!! To me it was not hot!! Now it is blazing hot!! I just drink too much sodas! I drink water but this time it was not enough!! I was down for almost a week!! Drink lots of water!!!
Do you hydrate with water adding lemon, lime etc electrolytes and minerals for heart and muscles Carbs from honey Melons, oranges, berries. Banana smoothies.
Well I tried growing watermelon that was a disaster, we had no rain 8 weeks now garden is done for. Got to say I will be leaving this area in little over a year. We had a a developer come in and wants to by our property so I will be moving on to wherever and my garden days are done for now. Thanks for all the help over the years.
The Old Goat is beside the basket of Zinnias. I’m going to grow some of the Hossinators next year, I’m a Cherokee Purple fan, but I am looking forward to growing some Hossinators
Maters!! So jealous. We are a few weeks behind and just can't wait for our first sammich 😂 Hoss max pack cukes are coning in already tho and beans out the wazoo! Thanks as always and Ole Goat is hiding out in the zinnias this week.
Made cantelope and cucumber juice last year. Go light on the cucumber, or it will be all you taste. Hope to add some watermelon to the juice this year. Also, dehydrated a bunch to make natural "candy."
With the zinnias. I'm actually fixing to see a Dr about the bear. I'm not that old either. I've been suffering from abnormal issues with it for years, and I finally got a Dr to take me seriously last week and send me to a specialist.
old goat over gregs right shoulder, I know we are behind, went to wedding in pinehurst and stayed two days in brunswick ga on the way up and now back, I would have had more fun to come visit the Hosse's house and gardens. well maybe one day see ya'll
The old goat is on the basket of pink flowers behind Greg. My tomatoes are nearing their end here in central/south florida. But I have a freezer shelf full. 🙂
Greg i couldnt give em away. Couldnt get people to come and get them. If i could can them i would. My church family ate them till they got tired of them.
The old goat's sitting on the pink flower container. My tomato seedlings and some others just disintegrate in this heat. No sure if it is just the heat or fungal disease. Last year I grew Better Boy but I got more foliage than tomatoes. It was hard to keep the blooms from falling off because of rain and humidity. I'm growing Red Romaine lettuce and Basil indoors as microgreens. Left to grow to maturity it dries up regardless of watering so now I am cutting and eating leaves when young. That seems to keep it growing longer
The bear got me last summer. I had to literally crawl in the house. And all i could do was just lay there until the pressure in head subsided. Now when my shirt gets to where its half wet with sweat I go inside.
A pure tasting tomato is German Johnson. Just enough tang. Second for me is Kellogg Breakfast. Yellow and not too sweet. Enjoyed watching the taste test 😂
Great show! Thanks for your concern, brother Greg! I think I’ve got about 10 years on you (69 in August) and that heat tolerance doesn’t get any better! These micro fiber “cool rags” around your neck really help too! Head, neck, and shoulders are key “thermostats” for the body. Keep them warm in the cold and cool in the hot and it really helps! A drink for me, a little on the head, a little on the neck! I’ve danced with that dang bear a few times and it ain’t fun! Light headedness is usually my first indicator. Interesting taste test on those maters! Lot of truth to what Mama used to say, “you eat first with your eyes!” Thanks for these great shows, sharing your knowledge, and fantastic products!
Here around Houston, we are hot, hot!! We planted squash. It turned out to be cantaloupe. 😮 😂That old goat is hanging out by the purple flowers. Maybe he's admiring those Get Dirty Socks.
We are sort of between gardens this year. Out with the old raised beds with rotting wood, and in with the 17" tall Olle metal raised beds. It got way to hot for us old folks to work outside, so we only have a few of the new beds in. But we have 'maters and peppers. Like Greg said, drip irrigation is the ticket in this 100 degree heat (which is way early this year). Grass is dry and crispy, but the tomatoes and peppers are lush, green and growing like gang busters. If this heat keeps up, it may be late fall before we get the remaining 6 beds in and filled with new planting media (we are mixing our own). So far no bug issues or disease showing up, but I'm sure both will show up eventually.
Good to hear your discussion on heat exhaustion! The bear got me a few years ago and you are correct that it recurs easier once you had the bear. My symptoms were major fatigue and cramping in my hands and legs. The key is hydration days before and during the time you are working in the heat. I have found hydration with water and sports drinks helps avoid the bear. I am working in the garden at sunup and have installed floodlights around the garden where I can work before daylight to avoid the heat.
That old goat is beside the purple flowers and socks. Heat exhaustion can to progress to heat stroke and that’s life threatening. Hydrate properly prior to being in the heat , if you wait till symptoms start you have waited too late . Be smart and be safe . 😊
I love starting my plants with Hoss seeds! But, imagine my surprise when my bell pepper seeds produced jalapeno pepper plants! 😢 I was so looking forward to having plenty of bell peppers, but instead I’m getting double amounts of jalapeno 😢😊
@@gardeningwithhoss thank you so much, but I didn’t keep the shipping invoice. Didn’t think I’d need it. It’s ok. I just thought maybe you’d like to know

For heat exhaustion you should drink the COLDEST water you can ; your body absorbs it quicker, the colder thew quicker.
