    I feel when you stand on the edge of a gorge or canyon, you realise how insignificant it makes you feel in the grand scheme of things. Aren't we lucky to live on such an amazing planet.

    Glad I found your channel. I’m loving it! I enjoy Overlanding over most of Nevada (my native state) and California. Your right, there’s nothing better than the smell of desert sagebrush. Except desert sagebrush after a summer thunderstorm. My wife goes out with me occasionally, but not nearly as often as I’d like, so I’m usually running solo. Being retired (Firefighter) gives me a lot of time to do it. It’s a small world, It would be great to run into you out there.

    The opening was wonderful - I got it. Some people would say “there’s nothing there.” On the contrary, when you can see that far you start to see inside yourself. Wow, and I haven’t had any coffee, yet.

      Thanks Dan, it was a pleasure to be out filming this. The audio captures don't always work out, but when they do, I've been trying to let them stand on their own with no music. I've definitely come to appreciate those moments. :-)

  • @samjones3106
    @samjones3106 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Why do people always mess up nice videos by adding music to them? The beauty is the quiet and the natural sounds.

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      As often as possible, I capture and share the quiet and the natural sounds. The audio is not always all that pleasant to listen to, especially while driving, which is far from quiet and natural. You will notice that most of the time I incorporate music, it is during driving segments when I don't have good audio to share. Drone footage has no audio at all (all you would hear is the motors whirring if the drone had a mic). I do use music at other times when it helps to capture & convey my mood/feelings/impressions of the moment. Personally, I enjoy other people's videos with well-curated soundtracks, and I specifically enjoy the process of incorporating music in my own productions. It's not like I'm randomly slapping some completely irrelevant hip-hop track in the background across the entire video. Considerable thought and work goes into the soundtrack.
      You're of course welcome to your opinion. :-) I would suggest not watching any of my other videos, you will just be disappointed. They *all* incorporate music as an element of the storytelling, and will continue to do so into the future.

    The externally mounted GoPro shots look sooo much better than the dash mounted shots! The 4k render looks very nice too! Beautiful video! Also, congratulations on the Jackery thing! They make great products. There are so many times that silent portable power will come in handy!

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks Matthew! Yeah, unfortunately a crucial piece of my GoPro mount progressively broke more and more over the course of this trip. I dared a few exterior shots now and then, but mostly kept it inside (or handheld out the window). I did have it fall off the car at one point, so I had to be extra cautious with mounting it outside. I don't like shooting through the windshield if it can be avoided. Impossible to keep it clean enough (especially with the bugs of summer) and it also slightly screws up the color balance, so I have to fight the color cast imparted by the windshield's coatings. I am now looking at incorporating some permanent, more reliable mounts in a few places outside. :-)

    • @MatthewHeiskell
      @MatthewHeiskell 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@softroadingthewestOh, completely understandable! I bet you could put some nice permanent gopro mounts on you roof rack. RAM suction cup mounts don't work if the car is dirty, but I got a magnetic gopro mount from amazon a while ago that has proven to be very strong versatile. Can't wait for the next episode!

    Look at all these amazing open spaces and I have to appreciate how many times you probably jogged across sagebrush and scorpions to get all those epic shots of that Subaru driving by. You gotta learn to fly that drone and drive at the same time.

      @softroadingthewest  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Haha, well, 3:22, 3:33, 11:30 ...all piloting and driving at the same time. :-) Ultimately it's actually easier to run past scorpions and rattlesnakes with the camera than muck around with setting up the drone, heh. :-) I need the exercise anyway, LOL.

    I spent most of this spring out there fly fishing but it’s getting a bit hot now for my taste, although it is currently high 80s to low 90s for another week or two. When it hits the mid 90’s I head for higher elevations. Since you were in Rome I’m assuming that your on the Owyhee River south of the reservoir. I think I know where you’re headed, if so that’s where I spent most of the spring. If you’re willing to make the hike down to that river you keep showing there’s nice trout fishing. One afternoon I never had a fly sit on the surface more then 30 seconds, I’ve never caught so many trout in one afternoon. You better hurry with the next video, I don’t think I can wait, lol.

    • @softroadingthewest
      @softroadingthewest  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm not much of a fisherman...don't even have a license this year...but I keep meaning to set myself up with some basic fly fishing gear so I can possibly land a trout or two for dinner. I generally don't like to eat fish, but definitely enjoy pan-fried fresh caught trout! We're going to get a lot closer to that river in the next installment, and I won't be hiking. :-)

Spray the rotor all over and use the whole can on all 4 rotors. Then take it for a drive right after and use the breaks to clean the crap off the pads and rotors. Should go away or tone the squeeking a lot!

    Horses are actually native to North America, this is where they evolved. The "native" Americans, which is to say the those who migrated to the Americas during the ice age, apparently hunted them to extinction around 10,000 years ago along with much other mega fauna. Fortunately, horses migrated the other direction across the Bering Land Bridge on their own and survived in the Central Asian grasslands.
    Awesome drive. Thanks for capturing it.

    • @softroadingthewest

      Right, the mustangs were in a way an inadvertent re-introduction of the species. They seem to flourish in this area. I don't know how many other wild horse populations there are across the U.S. It's so weird (and cool) to see something you've always seen as domestic livestock just out there living free with no one feeding it or shoeing it!

      Haha, I almost dialed that segment back to a more mellow piece of music, but ultimately this was a better reflection of the mood of the moment! :-)

    I have yet to pressure down off road. You’ve probably covered this in some episode I’ve not seen, but kinda pump do you have to represure and do your rims have bead locks and what’s the lowest pressure you feel comfortable going to without bead locks? Or, just point me to the video. Great content! If you want I could probably help you with the geology and would like to trek with you if you want.

      I use the Viair 88p compressor to air up. Going on three years now, still working great. No bead locks in the rims. The lowest I go is 12 psi, but only when driving on dunes & beaches. 18 psi as I did here is about the lowest I go when I have to do varied types of driving, including some occasional good gravel roads at higher speeds.

    Well, you and a couple of others have got. my wife and I totally stoked for overloading adventures. The Owyhee country of southeastern Oregon and southwestern Idaho are some of the last wide-open spaces. Have spent some time there, but surely not enough! Can hardly wait to get there. Curious. How do you video with your drone while you're driving? Keep 'em coming. Much appreciated.

      The DJI drones virtually fly themselves. Most have some kind of tracking capability. On remote roads by myself, I do sometimes pilot it manually with some simple motion while driving slowly, or just let it hover while I drive through the scene. It's much easier to fly than I imagined it would be.

    You have such a calming voice you should narrate childrens audio books or do voice over for meditation music. Great video.
    Who is driving the subie when you are video taping, the cow?

    2:15 JUMP START... your car?
    Can this be done the jackery?
    If not you may want to invest in a compact car jump starter battery pack. It would suck to be trapped in the middle of nowhere with a dead car battery.
    "Project Farm" does a great review on car battery jump starters.

      No, the Jackery cannot provide that kind of power surge. I *should* have a jump pack, and I don't. I have watched the Project Farm video twice already, LOL. And then I end up spending the money on something else. I really should have one with me though, given how often I go solo.
