Thanks Donald for exposure to your subscribers. It was great to finally meet up with you on the trails and I couldn't think of a better place to do it. Really pretty cool how it all worked out on Fathers Day even. Looks like you made it to that old corral and lava road. Hope we can do it again some time soon. George.
To me this spot is THE iconic SW Idaho Overlanding location, I'd been wanting to get here for so long...it's amazingly serendipitous that we were both headed there on the same weekend. Really glad we got to meet up and I look forward to future treks behind that old yellow Jeep!

11:40 WOW! 😮 It's amazing to see what a relatively stock Forester is capable of! The OEM cold air intake snorkel also has a water drainage/separator under the airbox, as well as a small, secondary water catch box, inside the air pipe closest to throttle body. Even the main computer is located inside the passengers footwell, totally protected from the elements. It's very well-designed, truly capable SUV. How much total ground clearance does your Forester have with the tires and mild lift kit? Fantastic video, your cinematography is breathtaking!! 😊
Cool adventure man! My heart was pounding when you made that river cross -a lot could have gone wrong. Especially when you consider how remote the location was, that raises the stakes big time! The Subaru gets it done👍
Really smart to try your vehicle with support on hand. Most people never find their limits, so they're either stuck because they tired something too difficult, or they miss out on something because they're too timid. Good call. Love the production too.
I've been following Coyote Works for almost as long as I have been following you. It's great to see interactions between two of my favourite channel/youtubers!
Nice job on the crossing. A word of advice. I crossed the Mojave River on a trip two months ago in my Jeep. It was basically the same kind of issue. The water was about 2 inches below my air intake. The crossing went well, but as a precaution, I took the Jeep in to have the diffs looked at the following week. I’m glad I did. The mechanic found water in the rear differential. It was serviced, and I was able to avoid any future problems with it. Great video Donald. Looking forward to the next one.
Oh wow! You just keep raising the bar! Absolutely top notch! Incredible location and you’ve captured it perfectly! I loved all the ambient sounds and the radio chatter really added to the story. Thank you so much!
Thanks largely to your encouragement, I pay much more attention now to featuring any nice audio I happen to capture and not letting it get lost in musical montages. Thanks Dan!
Congratulations Don to adding to the further capabilities of your "subie-marine" with your river crossing. I sure enjoy your adventurous road trips, and videos. I had no idea that Oregon contained such wide-open, beautiful vistas and big sky! Thanks so much for sharing, these two videos of your trip were amazing! = )
Nice trip. Something to consider when doing a deep crossing like that, especially with your intake where it is, would be to attach a tarp across the grill/front end (think COVID mask for your car). That can save a whole lot of potential trouble... Keep having fun.
Cool video with a great place to camp. What a view as long as you don't get washed downstream. Had an Subaru Brat for a 135+ miles. I am impressed what you have put your car thru. Take care and be safe out there.
The whole video was beautiful! You deserve a Netflix series! I like the climbing shot at 3:15 where you use audio from a camera on the car! The water crossing was intense! I like how you explained it. The sunrise time lapse was very nice. The jump fade effect was unique. I like that you can hear your exhaust now. It lets us know what you're doing with the throttle. You created an amazing piece of adventure art!
Thanks Matthew! That audio was actually captured by my mic mounted on the camera. I guess that angle must've worked particularly well. I too was struck by the audio there and made sure I didn't have any music over it. :-)

WOW! Great vid! That first water crossing was insane! I really liked the drone footage as it was going up and the sun came over the top of the mountain. Your voice very soothing and it makes me feel like I'm actually there. :)
Great episode! What fun adventure, friends, food, excitement and AWESOME views. Patrick McManus once wrote the greatest adventure was a low gas gauge. I will take his word for it i like the top end.
This was excellent. Gorgeous. Thrilling. Reminds me of when I forded rivers in Costa Rica in a Toyota Hilux. Can you imagine what kind of drag that rear fascia would have been? That has proven to be such a good decision.
Thanks for the informative videos Donald. Like the tires! Granted Subies aren’t that water-friendly, that crossing was about the average depth we negotiate in Mongolia (cue: scarcity of paved roads let alone bridges). The trick we found on the Forester is to remove the flat air duct just behind the grille so water doesn’t splash into the intake. The more difficult problem in our case with the JDM Foresters is the location of ECU under the passenger side floor mat - this does get into water unless reinstalled into the glove box. Anyway, enjoy the videos man keep em running!
Been following your videos on my Xbox for quite some time now! Figured I’d hop on my phone after this one and give you some kudos for that crossing! We’re always out in the PNW area in a Lifted BG outback, maybe we will give you a wave sometime. Cheers for repping Subaru Overland!

Ok, we had to go back and watch this one. This is where we just were last weekend. Marshall’s like “I’m not giving up on this canyon” 🤣 So…I think next year after things dry out we will come down the other side and now we know to just drive across the river. 😂
Could you see the gravel bar? (not sure how the view is from where you stopped). When Jason was there in January (he came down the far side), the river was a couple feet deeper than when I was there in June...it might not have even been possible to camp in that spot on the bar, and maybe also not possible to even cross the river. There are a number of campsites along that other side though, so it's still worth getting down in there. It really is a beautiful spot.

Thanks Jon! Yeah, that was hilarious...we didn't see anyone on that river the whole time we were there, until of course the very moment I needed to cross, and we had to stop traffic, LOL.
Great video. I’ve actually been thinking about a trip into that same area. You and Casey have really gotten my interest stirred about south eastern oregon
That water crossing was intense I was super nervous for you! I need to do a trip into this area. We have family in Boise so perhaps we need to meet in Southeast Oregon. Awesome to meet Casey on the trail I’ve been watching his Channel for a very long time. This series has been the best content you have done I’m loving every single minute.
Thanks for the kind words. I'm trying to do this trip justice with the videos...it was so great out there, that even though these have turned out reasonably nicely, I'm still disappointed with how much each episode fails to capture. It was all even better than these videos are able to convey. Would be fabulous to meet up & collab out there some day!
Great song choice! You have some really awesome places to off-road! Where I live the entire state is so built up there’s really only 1 decent place to go. Lucky for me that I live near it. That was a risky crossing, it you did it. The fact that your out over-landing with more dedicated 4WD vehicles and your able to keep up is a testament to Subaru’s durability.
We really really enjoyed this part! My palms were so sweaty watching that river crossing! This trip has been pretty epic so far, can’t wait for part 4 :)

I love that your car has minimal mods I'm hoping to do something similar with my 2011 Kia Sportage LX AWD after putting a dobison lift on it with some bfg mud tires and black rhino boxers going to hopefully be taking a cross country softroading trip this summer to the grand canyon with one of my friends she's always wanted to go and I figured no time like the present if 2020 taught me anything it's that life's far to short to not experience everything humanly possible within my budget I'm looking forward to this trip as much as she is
I recently got stuck on a water crossing that I’ve done several times, on this occasion I was alone and had to stack a ton of rocks to break free. It was a fun experience since I managed to break free after a couple attempts but a valuable lesson to always be prepared for unexpected turns of events in the backcountry.
Donald, you are such an inspiration. I'm looking for a Tundra 4x4 to explore CA national forests, but now I'm thinking AWD SUV for gas savings. I'm amazed with the places you are able to go! Wonder if I can take a Highlander hybrid through that river crossing?🤣⚡⚡⚡
Another amazing adventure and great cinematography! But dude, there has to be a better way to wash your rig... Ok, that was great tense filled moments there. Glad as you that you had some friends along. Thanks for sharing your amazing journey.

Nice video! Awesome river crossing! Please check your wheel hub bearings, because oil might be washed out. It is common to happen after getting in the water, at least on EU models. Good luck!
You had my adrenaline pumping in that water crossing! Another great video. I have a question. I have more experience with jeeps then I do subarus, in a Jeep, there automatic transmission has a vent tube that can be vulnerable in a water crossing and allow water in the trans if not redirect higher, dose subaru have a similar issue? All I could think about wile watching you cross was all the work flushing the pink foam out of a trans after a crossing like that. Well done on the crossing! 👏🤟
Your budies Chrokee Chief is awesome!! I'm looking toreplac my Tropie , head gasket gone for the third time and thhe repair is moer than hhat she's worth. Troper II engines are hard to find.
I know you love your forester and I have also loved mine in the past but I think a 4th gen 4 runner would suit you way better and if you kept it on almost stock tires you would net the same mpgs as your oversize tore forester. but way more ability and ability. I am kind of half planning a trip down the Mount Hood national Forest on Barlow Road and connecting trails in the middle of September if you’re interested .
Haha, we didn't see anybody on that river the whole time we were there, until of course the exact moment I needed to cross and we had to go out and stop traffic, LOL.
Awesome adventure. I enjoyed it. It is now a year later from when you did it. May I ask the name of this canyon and river? (I'm a native of SE Oregon and do not recognize it. Although I have no claim to be any kind of expert for the less-travelled-off-roads geography.) Your Subaru is impressive. 👍
Looooveee it so far!!! I do gotta say that your a contributing factor for me loving Oregon even tho I have never ever been there yet. Watching these videos makes me so excited for the time I actually do go up ☺️. Yooo great job on being safe on those water crossings. You did a great job mitigating your risks for getting the Forester across. Now will we be expecting a video sometime soon on a snorkel install? The water crossing was definitely something that shouldn't be done alone. Glad u had others with you to attempt and figure out how to get over without getting stuck. Niice shirt btw 😁 glad your enjoying it and getting it dirty!
I started researching snorkels as soon as I got home from this trip. I always felt like it would be overkill for me and where I go, but I tell you what, I wished for nothing more than a snorkel at those two moments. The shirt is awesome and should eventually also be appearing on Coyote Works, as Casey did a little chat with me for his video as well. I guess we'll see if I make the cut. :-)
@@softroadingthewest @softroadingthewest yaaa I'm still looking into what kind of snorkel I could retro fit into mine and if there even is one available for my model and year. Idk if there are any brands available for your vehicle. I feel like there's a ton of options over in Australia. When I first saw the water crossing I was a bit worried for you and was wishing you had the snorkel as well. Glad everything came out okay. Definitely you will need one if you keep this up haha. Also some diff breathers and or transmission breathers for the crossings would be good to look into as well. The hardest part about getting the snorkels is making the seal hold up with all the bumps and joseling going on while offroading. You want it flexible but clamped on tight but also strong to where the connections don't tear from flex. I'd be curious with whatever you come up with as a solution to your snorkel setup. That feedback is awesome to hear! I'm thinking of making a brand new one for the channel to mark our 1000 subs and when we get our subie back from the fabricator. Hands down and No doubt that you would make the cut into their video 😁 Btw the scenery was amazing and love the shots u got. Always a level above the rest 🔥
@@therootedprogress AFAIK there is no snorkel designed specifically for any of the Foresters, it's always a question of adapting something that was made for a different vehicle. I've pinned down two options that can work on a 2009-2013 Forester, and identified one which I prefer over the other. I'll probably get some assistance with that project rather than pure DIY though. A lot of variables for sure which are well beyond my level of (non) expertise, LOL.
Me too! The moments are often SO fleeting...by the time I stop, grab the camera, set up as needed....gone. I've seen cougar & bear but didn't stand a chance. Even elk - which I see pretty frequently - are MUCH more shy than deer and disappear into the woods instantly. But yeah, spotting wildlife of all types is one of my favorite parts of being out in the backcountry. I'll keep trying to capture it on film!

-getting out of there was even better! BUT a did anyone else notice the kayaker going up stream? 🤣 he deserves a little recognition.
Looking forward to part 4!
Thank you again for the mini vacation. My 06 Subie with 2" lift was really wanting to be there as well.
We really really enjoyed this part! My palms were so sweaty watching that river crossing! This trip has been pretty epic so far, can’t wait for part 4 :)
Thanks! Part 4 this weekend!
Fantastic content!!! I have yet to forge water . I learned a lot from watching you! Glad you got to meet Casey. We love his content too.
Excellent scenery and videography!! 💯😎✔️
Glad to see the super group together. . The sunrise time-lapse was beautiful!
Donald, enjoyed the video. One of your best to date. The Mrs. and I will be up your way Sept/Oct
It would be nice to link up and share a meal. A local eatery would be grand. Cheers, Mate.
coyote works too! awesome. love seeing the channels i subscribe and watch come together. Also great job on those river crossings!
I am blown away and so impressed with the roads (or lack thereof) you and your Outback hit. I wouldn't have thought you could do that stuff. Very cool. Keep up the great work. Oregon is incredible. What river is that, or do I need to be a Patreon to get that info? I just might :). Cheers!!
Excellent! Nice to have "Just in Casey around!"
Awesome. Love your videos I want to take my 2018 forester down to Baja for some surf fishing. One day.
Amazing video. I love it, especially the river crossing. You've found so many stunning sites there 😍😍😍
Can't wait for the next episode
11:40 FUN times and good skills. WISE to Wait.
Heck yeah on making that crossing! Glad it went well! Great video and great spot!
LOL, it's funny, I picked up so much mud getting to this spot that I did actually use my bucket at the river to wash my side windows, I couldn't see out! :-)
One of your best episodes yet. I really enjoyed it. Great job!
Impressionnant comme passage à gué! Il y a de quoi ne pas être rassuré avec une telle profondeur! Je sais perso que je n'aurais pas eu le cran d'essayer, bravo! 👍
Well done on crossing a good watch
PRETTY COOL NICE TO HAVE EVERYONE HELPING EACH OTHER OUT ! DID YOU GET ANY WATER IN YOUR VEHICLE ? BEAUTIFUL PLACE TO CAMP BUT I WAS THINKING OF THE RIVER / CREEK BEING HIGHER THE NEXT DAY IF THERE WAS A RAIN STORM 🌧 UP STREAM A COUPLE OF MILES AWAY FROM YOU'LL ! GLAD EVERYTHING TURNED OUT FOR EVERYONE !
BE SAFE ! HAVE FUN ! HOPE YOU HAVE A GREAT YEAR ! GOD BLESS YOU ALWAYS ON YOUR JOURNEYS ! ENJOYED ! ENJOYED SEEING COYOTE WORKS TOO LOVE HIS TH-cam CHANNEL !
BREATHTAKING BEAUTY COLORS VIEWS SCENERY VIDEO !
A few nail biting moments there Donald😉
What an exciting series, can't wait for the next episode 👍🏻
Casey in the wild lol. Love both of your channels
Enjoyed this video, hope you travel with them again
Nice work! I ended up JB Welding my bumper in place as it always comes unclipped crossing rivers. Works a treat. Oh and amazing country!
Oooh great tip! Thank you! I look to you as the master of SH Forester river crossings! :-)
@@softroadingthewest I wouldn't say a master haha! I have flooded it before. Speaking of which have you relocated your ECU?
What a fun day for you, thanks for posting.
Nice video! Awesome river crossing! Please check your wheel hub bearings, because oil might be washed out. It is common to happen after getting in the water, at least on EU models. Good luck!
Whoa!! You beast 💪 mode across that water good job!!
That is a sweet old wagoneer!
Another awesome video! My favorite so far. I've got a 09 forrester and live on the Oregon coast. Love your content
Great video. Love seeing new spots in Oregon to explore
Lol props to the mad lad kayaking up that section of the river
Haha, we didn't see anybody on that river the whole time we were there, until of course the exact moment I needed to cross and we had to go out and stop traffic, LOL.
Amazing crossing, I have seen the water get over my hood only once and it was just a short crossing, this is insane!
Another great one... looking forward to the next episode... keep on rollin' ... Respect from Junction City
I have yet to see anyone ask "Where in Eastern Oregon". I'm looking for challenging places to take my jeep and all I've found is logging roads.
What a beautiful trip.
Gnarly river crossing! 😎 Did you install diff breather extension hoses to your Forester?
Had my heart pumping... :) nice job!
Hands down and No doubt that you would make the cut into their video 😁
Btw the scenery was amazing and love the shots u got.
Digging the wildlife shots. Would love to see more (if you got 'em)--snakes, birds, insects, whatever you got!
Great cooperation with that rubicon.
I couldn’t believe that you’ll make it ;)
Thanks for the videos. The east coast has nothing like this. Love from Baltimore city
Was awesome man! I apparently need to get a cat-back and not just dump my exhaust right off the muffler. :D
that old jeep is seriously cool
Great video, cool Canyon, nice traveling companions! Always love your videos and nice to learn about coyote works I'll be checking that out.
