    Just did this half hour job. Took the seat out with 14mm socket, didn't pull down the plastic trim, that gives you no extra room at all. Left the heating duct in place because I couldn't find tabs and didn't want to break it like in video. Have to lay on your back/side. I used a pillow for my back and rolled up a shirt to use as a pillow because my neck got sore in 1minute. Here's Very important advice. The tab you press to remove the white claw should only move a millimeter THEN you have to use some force to pull it off. It does NOT just slide off easy like I expected. I broke the tab but luckily my new servo motor came with a new claw. I used a stubby straight screwdriver on the tab while simultaneously using that same hand to pull it off. I also used a headlamp so I didn't have to deal with a flashlight and a stubby Phillips screwdriver for the screws holding the servo on. I could only use my left hand for the whole operation so I had to take a break when putting the screws back in. I can't imagine anyone except a small child getting two hands up there and if you could your right hand would block the flashlight anyway. I can't imagine doing this with the seat in, I would probably be in the hospital with a broken back right now if I tried. Tools used. Stubby Phillips screwdriver, stubby flat screwdriver, 14mm socket with ratchet and extension, flashlight.

      That’s why a mechanic will charge you a fortune. Probably a $1,000 job at least. Thanks Toyota!! 🧐

    Wow, great job. I really appreciate the warning about possible tab breakage and your careful camera work showing your point of view while lying down in addition to the shots showing the motor while still attached. I believe I can find and fix the farm thing now :)

      Thank you and glad it helped! Yes you can definitely do this yourself. I actually just had to do this all over again, believe it or not. The servo motor I got on ebay went bad after just several weeks, but luckily it has a lifetime guarantee. Doing this the second time was way quicker. If you can find the right angle to rest your head and the right length screwdriver this job isn't too bad at all!

    Great job on the video! I have a '99 Camry. Really tight fit, indeed. I just manually set the arms on the floor and defrost while waiting to get a new motor. There is one more screw on that plastic panel on mine under the hood latch. Thank you so very much for taking the time and effort!

    Really appreciate you putting this video up. I took a chance on a junk yard replacement and it worked...we'll see for how long. It was only $7.50 so it was worth the gamble.

    You video showed me how to repair it for my 97 Camry. THANK YOU SO VERY MUCH. My actuator is bad even the motor and gears inside are OK. Maybe the circuit board is bad. I ended up getting one from a 98 Camry in the junk yard and successfully took care of my problem.

    ❤️I paused @1:09 and noted the position of the slotted white plate❤️
    A repair man had re-positioned the white plate in my car the wrong way. My 99 Cam was stuck on defrost and would not change. I tested the motor with a 9v battery to see that it wasn't a bad motor. Also reset the fuse - now my door actuator is up and running.

    Other than the floor vent that broke on me as well it was actually an easy job. You can take the hood latch apart and completely take that lane out as well. Just two screws and a metal clip. Thanks

    Thank you! It was working fine yesterday when I parked the car but today it is stuck on the vent. Just ordered a refurbished on ebay and will try to replace it myself or hand it off to trusted mechanic and will pay for the labor. I reached your video via ToyotaNation. Was thinking about getting brand new OEM via online Toyota dealer but it was about $175 plus shipping. Not sure how many more years I can nurse from a 99 Camry!

    I am about to replace the part with a new one but have one question. Considering that the white cover sits on the Servo in one direction, should the vent mode dial also sit at a specific location like lower legs or upper vents to match the direction of the white cover? Hope I am asking this question correctly. Thanks.

    Just did this...Don't really need to remove anything if your flexible enough.. Just push the seat back as far as it goes and get in there.. Took me 30 mins first time but With practice maybe a 15 min job max.....It's very easy...( if ignore placement).. It's just flathead to pop off cam, disconnect electrical connector., take off 3 screws... Put 3 screws back on pop everything in .... whats that like 3-4 steps.. Very easy... ( again if you ignore where it is..)

  • @twobeer3316

    My motor moves the wheel into all the positions, but I have no air coming out of any ducts. It sounds like it's blowing behind the dash. Any ideas?!

      Could be the actual blend door not the motor/servo shown in this video. 3 months later how did you fix this issue?

  • @mk_ultrarunner
    @mk_ultrarunner 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Thank you! I thought it was my blend actuator that was bad. Discovered it was the mode actuator which is 3x the cost. 🤦🏻‍♂️. Motor is hot on actuator and looks like liquid on it. Prob where the lithium grease has been heated up from the motor being stuck. Not looking forward to paying for it or replacing this. Unfortunately on a 2004 Solara, the cam assembly is made on the actuator (from what I’ve seen) instead of it being like the Recirculate damper actuator where you just replace the us unit itself. It’s an entire assembly.

    • @andrewohanian5132
      @andrewohanian5132  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Does it look like this? www.amazon.com/Actuator-2002-2010-8710630371-87106-30371-Conditioner
      It seems like people have been able to replace this one DIY. Maybe this video is more along the lines of your Solara actuator? th-cam.com/video/3fZ3l0rAZH4/w-d-xo.html
      I would think the 2004 Solara is going to share the same actuator as either the 2004 Camry or Lexus LS###... hopefully you can find a way to do it yourself.

    Also how much was the new air vent? Where did you purchase it from?

    • @andrewohanian5132
      @andrewohanian5132  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Do you mean that floor vent on the driver's side? I didn't end up replacing it. It was able to stay somewhat secure with only 3 out of the 4 tabs in-tact, then I used a little super glue as well to be sure that it won't come loose. I would definitely recommend being a little more patient than I was and trying to pry the latches off by hand

    Will this fix the middle one (the cold/hot dial)? Mine seems to be stuck on cold and won't budge.

    • @andrewohanian5132
      @andrewohanian5132  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      No I don't think it would fix that. This motor controls which vent the air comes out of, not the temperature of the air. I believe you might need a new blower motor or blower motor resistor but make sure you do a little research before buying one of those. So it's stuck on cold, and you cannot get heat, correct? It could even be that your thermostat is stuck open and the engine isn't getting warm enough...

    Ok this is the mode door for the vents not the blend door for temperature control from heat to AC!

  • @robertwilliams-fs8zq

    I found the video very helpful.. except can i please get more information on where the arms actually lined up in the end. My car does not seem to be able to use the inside climate control yet my mechanic can change it manually to either hot or cold.. .. i cant even find the hvac mode door lever on official toyota part sites. If you could show the motor replaced and the arms in the top plate i would be greatful

    • @andrewohanian5132
      @andrewohanian5132  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Hi Robert, I think you are looking at a different part. The Servo Motor only controls which vent the air comes out of (floor, mid, or defrost vents), not the temp of the air. It sounds like you are having trouble controlling the temp of the air, not the vent the air blows out of? It sounds like the part you are concerned about is the Blend Door Actuator which mixes warm and cool air and sends the air to the vents.
      In terms of the arms for the servo motor, they basically just fit inside the two grooves or "tracks." I can try to get a picture to show you, but in the mean time, just know that it is not really anything precise. I just loosely placed the two arms inside the two grooves of the plate. I wasn't concerned about their exact position in the cam plate, just that each arm was in it's own track. Then when you change the vent mode, the motor will take care of turning the arms where they need to go.

    • @robertwilliams-fs8zq
      @robertwilliams-fs8zq 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@andrewohanian5132 okay I can actually move the blend door using the temp control. I have removed the glove compartment and I can physically watch the door move forward and back based on the temp setting to either cold or hot. So it's not that actuator. It could perhaps be something manually manipulated between the heater core, or the ac.. so make it either cold or hot regardless of blend door actuator. So here is where this question originated from. My mechanic gave me an estimate to get it completely repaired. The parts list is as follows. Hvac mode door lever link 87151j, (8715106010) This is not even pictured on website for toyota parts, it is simply hand drawn. hvac mode door lever link 87151k (8715106020) another item not visible on toyota factory parts site. Final part was hvac air inlet door actuator which is 87106h? or (8710606060) This is the part you replaced in video. The part on the passenger side which i believe you are referring to is 87106n (8710606080) Providing this diagram i am using for refrence. parts.toyota.com/p/Toyota_1999_Solara/HVAC-Air-Inlet-Door-Actuator-Servo--Damper-For-Recirculation/63133425/8710606080.html

    • @robertwilliams-fs8zq
      @robertwilliams-fs8zq 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I also found it odd that the actual Toyota dealership had no way to find the parts either. Although they still quoted me near 1400 dollars for the repair. I do not mean to come across as argumentative. I am trying to provide accurate information and absolute frustration in not a single physical refrence to any of those parts

    • @andrewohanian5132
      @andrewohanian5132  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@robertwilliams-fs8zq Yeah I see, that is a little odd that so many of those parts need to be replaced. I would bet that there is probably only one part that is malfunctioning. Could you start back at square one - what exactly is the issue you are experiencing? You can't change the AC from cold to hot, correct? The AC blows cold but you can't control the temp? But you are saying that when you open the glove box you see the motor moving? And your mechanic can manually move the air from cold to hot, but it doesn't work with the knob?
      For the part in my video, if you can simply redirect the air that is blowing from floor to mid to defrost vents, I would not touch the servo motor. In that case the servo motor would be perfectly fine I would think.
