LOST TREASURE: John Lennon Sings 'Let It Be'

  • Using A.I. extraction software, an inspired rendition of "Let It Be" - sung by John Lennon and recorded on January 25, 1969 - has been uncovered. Recorded in fits and starts, John's guitar and vocals were isolated, then remixed and edited together for a more complete performance of the song.
In the nineteen seventies, 150 hours of Beatles rehearsal tapes, recorded for the 1970 "Let It Be" documentary, were stolen and leaked onto the black market. Thirty years later, they were recovered by British and Dutch police during an intercontinental sting dubbed "Operation Acetone." In 2021, some of these recordings were used for the Beatles' "Get Back" docuseries. However, most of the tapes, which contain a goldmine of unreleased original Beatles music, remain on the cutting room floor.

When you mention who decided to keep all the tapes or film running from the recent Get Back project /film by Peter Jackson it was Director Michael Lindsay-Hogg for sure who kept the cameras & audio running! He even hid a microphone in the cafeteria at Twickenham film studio to capture John & Paul talking about how they felt of George walking out & their relationship with each other. This is all in the Get Back documentary if you watch it. Paul I’m sure agreed to most of it too but it was Michael Hogg who was keeping it rolling for the “Let it Be” film thankfully!

Watching Get Back I noticed how John and Paul sought each others approval. One would crack a joke and then look at the other for a giggly response. They were still really kids in many ways. I cannot easily put my finger on why The Beatles were so special, but they definitely were.

On the 9th of December 1980, a Beatles tribute act was booked to play in a local dance venue and we went and saw them (we had planned to go weeks before). The night was down but good, they were brilliant, covering most of the Beatles career in 3 acts (Cavern - 4 Sale / Rubber Soul - Mystery Tour / White album - Abbey Road) with a long encore as the band didnt want to stop playing. The Encore was the guys basically in street clothes doing songs from the solo careers after they split (so we got Photograph, My Sweet Lord, Imagine, Junior's Farm etc). For the final song of the night, they said they were going to do something different and the guy who had played John Lennon, sat at the piano and then the band did Let it Be with Lennon on vocals. The band ended up in tears, as did the crowd. Everyone stopped dancing and just stood and listened and thought about what had happened the day before. It was an emotional way to end a gig ... I knew the drummer in the band and he told me years later that it was the only night that they ended the show that way. It was special.

I was laying in the bath, 6 years old (1964) playing Beatles songs in my head. When John and Paul sang together sometimes it merged into another new voice, so I'd analyse which voice was who. Their 2 voices making a new voice was something unique. No competition- both amazing voices.

I believe they both made their last effort playing together to be one of the utmost sincerity so as to keep to the integrity of the songs and realizing that the world would later be listening. They both had prescience and never did anything half-assed. Their respect for one another seemed to be renewed in these last recordings. They must have had something sacred internally but, we all got to see it manifested. The Beatles are the best.

John was a couple of years older, but he learned a lot about music from Paul. I truly believe things would’ve come together had John not been executed. There was mad respect between them. John knew it’d be better to have Paul in his band. By far, his smartest move.

It's interesting to see George using his Stratocaster here. I had only ever seen him using the red Les Paul that was gifted to him by Eric Clapton or his rosewood Telecaster during the Let It Be sessions. Most of the pictures and videos I had seen of George using his Stratocaster are from the Sergeant Pepper/Magical Mystery Tour era.
Has anyone seen any pictures of George with his stratocaster in its original finish before it was repainted? I have read that it had a sonic blue finish before being repainted in a psychedelic rainbow, and that it was one of two matching ones that he and John Lennon got in 1965. I have seen pictures of John Lennon with his sonic blue stratocaster, but I have never seen George with his until after it received the psychedelic paint job.

I grew up with The Beatles always there on the radio on tv and in movies we all know that John and Paul had man crushes on each other, Paul said not long ago that when he looks back at their time together and when he worked with John that "then i was working with my mate John it's just know hitting me i was working with JOHN LENNON!", I was born on November 21st 1963 The Beatles were playing the ABC in Carlisle and next day JFK as murdered, but as a very young kid in Scotland tv took breaks during the day so radio was on all the time the first song i remember is HELP! coz someone gave it to my dad he loved the song help! but dad was a rocker in the 50s so like the Beatles he loved all those great rock and roll records and till i became a teenager and was buying my music that was all the records we had, then i started to get into bands like The Jam and Weller had always talked about the Beatles and covered "And your Bird can sing" So i bought Revolver and wow a whole new world opened up to me, up to then all i had heard were the greatest hits all those no1s, so over the next year i bought every Beatles album and 45 i could get then Dec 8 1980 happened and the dream was over for real this time😪 but these guys built everything that rock music became, they were and always be the GOAT 4 normal Lads who fate brought together to bring so much joy to everyone no matter who or where you are from, its 60 years from their 1st UK hits and here we are all still talking about them. peace out fra Scotland
