- This 1968 Beatles Classic DISMISSED by Lennon McCartney FINALLY Reveals George Harrison’s Isolation. George Harrison is often described as the 'Quiet Beatle’. His role in The Beatles is now considered imperative to their long success and he is many fan’s favorite Beatle but that wasn’t the case in the early days - at least not in George’s mind. He was unsure of the significance of his role and his contributions outside of playing the guitar on Beatles songs were minimal. One might say George was overlooked when considering the magnitude of John and Paul’s songwriting credits. Put yourself in George’s shoes; you have two of the greatest songwriters writing hit after hit with immense pressure to continue the success while having your own growing list of songs. In the back of your mind, you're thinking I want to bring my songs to the table but are they good enough? John and Paul are like George’s older brothers since school days. George was my favorite not just because he was a brilliant musician and songwriter, but because my next door neighbors ( back in the 60's) were friends of his parents. They both visited and stayed with them when they took their yearly trip to England. They also met George and saw him during his visits to his parents and said he was a very "nice boy, very polite and respectful." Mrs Harrison used to write Mrs. Wheeler (my neighbor) letters. After one arrived I was invited over to the house and she would read it to me . I got to hear every letter she received from Mrs. Harrison. It was a wonderful treat every time I was invited. George was also the only Beatle my mother would let me listen to when he went solo, due in great part to Mrs. Wheeler's experiences with the Harrisons. MY greatest joy is that Ringo remained friends with George right up until he died, a very sad day for me and all of his other faithful fans.
I too adore George, and honestly Ringo is such a mensch, so devoted to George (playing on so many of his albums too), how can anyone help but love him? None of this "like a baby brother" rubbish when they're all grown-@$$ men!
"If I Needed Someone"...THE greatest Harrison tune, by far. Timeless, and holds up so well to repeated listening.
…and a tribute to(or rip off of) The Bells of Rhymney(?), not sure of that spelling, by The Byrds. If this is news to you, please check it out. I never looked at the song the same way afterwards because my understanding of the song went from curiosity and respect to realizing there was a lot less creativity that I could credit to George for that recording. But, its no big deal because that is pretty common amongst the large majority of any songwriters you can find. They almost ALL. are guilty of it here or there.

Beware of Darkness is a brilliant song and Leon Russell's take on the tune is amazing.
The first time that I listened to the song "Something", I believed that the Beatles had reached the pinnacle of all recorded music with that song. I had never paid it much attention who wrote what or even who played what, as long as it was the Beatles. But when I heard the line "Something in the way she moves me" and the way the music leads up to that phrase. It was something that spoke from the SOUL, you could feel it in your heart. Thank You George!

The standard was 1 Ringo Starr song and 2 George Harrison songs and the rest was Paul and Johns. I usually say that the Beatles was the most "down to Earth" famous musicians. But inside the Beatles it was different!
The Traveling Wilburys was George's personal redemption.
The band had the five best musical forces ever combined, and finally, George Harrison had his day in the sun that he so utterly deserved.

George in my subjective opinion was a great song writer! I loved a lot of his stuff!
Yes, George definitely developed through the years, but the missing factor it seems in this video is the vocal quality of Lennon and McCartney comparison with Harrison. John and Paul weren't just two great songwriters, they were two of the greatest rock vocalists ever. George wasn't. Though I do love his voice.
Altho' "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" moves me more than ANY other Beatles song, I first fell in love with George's music when "Things We Said Today" was released. The Lennon McCartney team wrote gorgeous music often -- but George is The Man. "Handle Me With Care"? OMG, that song brought the best out of Orbison's, Petty's, Dylan's and Lynn's voices while -- typical if George -- unabashadly exposing his heart. Beautiful human being, very deeply missed.

I loved "I Need You" and sang it and played it on my guitar in the early 90s for my girlfriend. I just love the melody. But the first song George wrote which could have been a HIT single was "While My Guitar Gently Weeps".

I discovered over time that many of my very favorite Beatles songs were written by George. He had as much talent as the others, without question. During his solo work and his time with the Traveling Wilburys he was still doing Beatles level work, while the others weren’t any longer.
Within You And Without You is simply phenomenal. A wonderful track that showed me as a teenager a path to sanity in a world I couldn’t relate to. Musically it is impeccable

Harrison is preaching his "religion" -- but at the same time engaging in extramarital affairs. While making "Living in the Material World," preaching his putative REJECTION of materialism, he was having an affair with Ringo's wife.
Such a "spiritual" guy backstabbing his former bandmate. In contrast, most/all ethical rules originated in "RELIGION".
But it is more common than not that those who make a big deal out of their 'religion" are using it as a cover for what they actually do.

'Don't bother me' is one of my favourite Beatles songs, very underrated.
Don’t Bother Me is also my favorite Harrison song. Really dig John’s brilliant rhythm guitar and Ringo’s drims.
'Darkest' song on Meet The Beatles and has stood the test of time.
Whilst John and Paul’s songs were iconic George had both the voice and the writing skills. As he grew in confidence this became obvious.

He DID record his own music and was quite successful with his songs with the Beatles and as a solo artist after the Beatles split up. His song contribution to the Beatles were up there with what were considered to be some of the Beatles best and well known songs. Someone once said that John Lennon sounds just like John Lennon and Paul McCartney sounds like Paul McCartney in their solo careers but when George Harrison went solo that he still sounded like the Beatles even though he doesn't sound like Paul and John vocally and there is a truth to that remark.
George Harrison was a late bloomer when it came to writing and that's why he had to really push to get his songs recorded with the Beatles. In the end everything worked out but I understand some of his resentment.

"And I Love Her" was Paul's composition but the guitar riff and guitar solo were George's. Paul said without the guitar riff the song will not sound as good as it was.

And george is not predisposed to do extended solos. He was a song guitarist..much like ringo is a song drummer. He contributes guitar parts apt to a song. Minimalistic but standout nonetheless. I still cant get over his solo on till there was you....short but sweet.
But that wasn't even real Paul, who died in a car crash in 1966. The replacement fake Paul was already being called "FAUL" by 1968 by the other Beatles, by 1968.

I seem to recall on The Beatles A Hard Day's Night album. George had a song titled I 'm Happy Just to Dance With You. Miss you, George.

Although I was a "younger" fan (relatively), George Harrison was my favorite band member.. His magnum opus "All Things Must Pass" 3 disc solo LP remains a landmark effort and was a mammoth commercial success as well, popular with critics and fans alike.. Of all the band members' various solo careers, only George Harrison was able to recapture the classic "Beatles sound", as he did with the "Back When We Were Fab" track from the "Cloud Nine" LP. That song sounded like it could have come straight off the 'Magical Mystery Tour' album. NOBODY else in the band was able to do that.
Yea hes got a way of penetrating the soul, very deep. I love All Things Must pass as well. He was my favorite for years but these days I find it depends on the day and my mood. They each offer something special depending on how you’re feeling.
I disagree. I think Paul's "Flaming Pie" is the closest I've heard to what a Beatles album would resemble.
When I'd go get my hair cut I'd bring along my Tiger Beat magazine and show her a photo of George and say to her that I want my hair like his.

The Stones were considered the bad boys of rock and roll. George was singularly different - an evolving soul finding himself while looking within, for god. With the Stones, it was like professional honor among thieves. I love the Stone who were good to dance to. I adore Joe Cockers music especially later, but I absolutely love George - who he was, his music, what he had to put up with the Beatles, his leadership and spiritual nature. If you're going to incarnate onto this planet, it's reason enough to have familiar connection with a deep soul like George...again - that at least is what it feels like and not just in the Summer of Love. The contrast of George to a crazed intruder must be a hard thing to live with when in such a depraved lost state of mind. Living with crazed fan was very challenging for the Beatles, more so with George. George smoked too many cigarettes for his lungs - love is all you need.

Thanks, Freewheeling, I grew up with the Beatles. When JFK, my idol at the time, was assassinated, I lost my mind. 13 years old and a depressed kid. I was a music nut, piano, and guitar player, and who came alone? The Beatles, depression dissipated. Was never a fan of Yoko, sorry, didn't like her one bit but George, amazing!

Not only is All Things Must Pass considered the absolute best of all Beatles solo albums, consistently outranking every Lennon or McCartney album, but ever since music streaming began, the #1 Beatles song being streamed worldwide is George Harrison's "Here Comes The Sun", far outpacing every Lennon McCartney classic to this day and remaining the most viral Beatles song on the internet, and I'm sure George is amused by this long overdue recognition by the whole wide world, which now regards him in the very same league as Lennon McCartney....

FFS, George was NOT in the same league as McCartney or Lennon. "All Things Must Pass" is excellent but that "Something" and "While My Guitar Gently Weeps" do not make a genius. "All Things" was also the last top drawer thing George did.

I'm pretty sure he played bass on that song too. Paul walked out of the recording session but I've never read why he objected to the way it was being done.
I Need You, and If I Needed Someone are 2 of the best songs ever - they seem to have a delicate circling back onto itself, so neat, so perfect.

One reason John & Paul rejected George's songs is that they often sounded like something else. The melody of 'While my guitar' reminds me a little of Dusty Springfield's 'I close my eyes & count to ten.' One of his best songs - omitted here - is 'The Inner Light,' which Paul did praise.

George's songs stand the test of time better than either John or Pauls. Many could be released today and still chart.

As for Ringo's songs: Well.......he was a good drummer.
George's talent was criminally overlooked, under-appreciated, and under-used.

You can see in many of their pictures taken, that George is looking in a different direction most, if not all the time. That speaks volumes in the path he chose compared to the other three. My favorites songs of Harrison are. "Here Comes The Sun", "My Sweet Lord" and his earlier one, "Taxman"...
I no longer listen to Abbey Road or anything they recorded after Magical Mystery Tour: Harrison's songs in Abbey Road are by far the best.
I Loved every song that George ever wrote. In 1964 when the Beatles were in Memphis, Tennessee My3 cousins and I went to Mid South Coliseum to see the Beatles. My Mother drove going and my Aunt drove going back home to Baton Rouge Louisiana. They were great. The Group called The Circle Red Rubber Ball,,Badfinger, EltonJohn, The Yard Birds and the Beatles came last after every one else finished singing. My favorite Beatle was George and I still love him.
I have always loved George. First thing I noticed was how handsome he was. He was absolutely gorgeous. I always loved his music too. He was my first true love and still is. That was 60 years ago. I miss George and his music. ♥️🌹♥️
He was "the quiet" Beatle but he spoke volumes of spirituality and love through his music much more than any other Beatle. Good job George ,you outshined Lennon in my eyes and your soul was well grounded . Rest in Spiritual Peace, George and thank you for your peaceful ,thinking man's music.
The thing about George on a spiritual level is his seeking and discovery of his religion. John was a genius but flip flopped his way through various religions and fads. George stuck with what he discovered and believed in till his dying day.George may have had less output than John and Paul but he did achieve some genius level work.

Note that Harrison took exclusive songwriting credit for his songs, even when John ("Taxman" as example) helped him with the lyrics. As competitive with each other as John and Paul were, they at least shared credit even when one or the other was the only author of one of their songs.

George was only 14 years old when Lennon invited him to join the Quarrymen due to his guitar skills. Lennon and McCartney were already writing songs together by then so it's no surprise that they largely ignored his songs in the years that followed. George really should have recorded a solo album or two in the mid-60's. A few successfully solo hits would have boosted his song writing credibility among his fellow bandmates.
George was always and forever is my favorite Beatle.

i think it was lucky for george and his fans that many of his songs were 'saved' for his first solo album. the whole album (all things must pass) was a qualified treasure of music & philosophy.
In some way it provided closure to the break up.

@@freewheelingideas True.... I am a guitar teacher and a few years ago we did a George Harrison tribute set with his songs, Harrison Beatles songs, solo and also Traveling Wilbury's tunes. I really had to practice my slide guitar skills ;-)
George was my late wife's favorite, when I was a kid, me & my friend's pretended we were The Beatles (I was George) The student became the master. Thank You, Mr. Harrison, for showing us one man CAN make a difference!!!
George was great, maybe my favorite Beatle for a few years in the 70's, in fact he was. Paul was a superior musician and writer in the band for a long time, kept the band together in fact. This George is under appreciated thing gets kind of old though. George, and all the Beatles, should feel VERY fortunate and blessed to have been in that band, period. I guess it makes for good book sales.

Isn’t it a pity is one of my favorite post-Beatles songs. The lyrics are powerful, poetic and deep. Both reflects his personal and a broader societal disharmony. It was one of the early songs I learned when I picked up guitar. Eric Clapton played an extended solo on it when touring with George.

George & Ringo were foundational to John & Paul's tunes
He wasn't quiet really, he was pensive and humble. Altogether an awesome man and a great musician and songwriter. God rest him.
George proved to the world what genius he was in his own right after the Beatles broke up. "All Things Must Pass" is without a doubt one of greatest albums of all time. George is my favorite mop top. On a side note, the first album I bought as a kid was Rubber Soul, for my money the most important album in rock and roll as its format was about a full concept album, not a couple of singles with filler songs to complete the album. George's contributions was integral to the high level of creativity on this album. Great video, thank you!

Finally, someone articulates my opinion on the Beatles and George. I couldn’t have said it anywhere near as well. Best musician in the group, and IMO best songwriter, although not as prolific. Quality, not quantity.

I've loved The Beatles for decades, and I guess that George Harrison has emerged as my favorite because I always considered him the "coolest". But let's face it, his songwriting has become world-class over the years.
Eventually all four ended up crushed by the entity called “The Beatles”. George was the first and most obvious of these, but the group was slowly strangling each of its members.
It was like a double edged sword.

My favorite Beatle. I want to tell you was the first of his i remember. We all read the liner notes and everything we could in magazines back in those days. My favorite has to be While My Guitar Gently Weeps. RIP Sir George

It wasn't dismissed at all they broke up and it wasn't the only song practised in the Let it Be sessions that didn't make that album. They all had them on solo albums . George was young and couldn't write good songs at first and had to learn it had nothing to do with being dismissed. Like he said himself. Hate these videos always making out that George was somehow dismissed when he was just the little brother . They had a love for each other none of us will know. They shared the whole experience and nobody knew how they felt but them four lads from Liverpool. The Beatles the greatest band ever. Love them all with equal measure.
George also had the best solo album of any former Beatle, "All Things Must Pass".
Lennon was the best writer in the band. McCartney was a helluva balladeer and acoustic writer. Harrison was a lot like Lennon in being out there but effective and also biting. Didn't hear Harrison write as much as a solo artist as Lennon though, for whatever reason. Also, as side project go, Badge is an amazing song.
JUST GLAD I WAS ABLE to grow up with the GREATEST BAND EVER... THE BEATLES ... Was 13 in 1964, What a ride of life listening an waiting for the next new song from this band over the short 6 years they were together... Then the solo years brought 4 times the music And I feel George was on top of them all .... TO MANY FAVORITES to try and pick out just one ... WELL my favorite is the one playing now , then my favorite is the next in line ETC.....
The more I hear about and read about and think about what George accomplished within The Beatles, the more he is a hero to me.
I believe without the Creative Work of Chords and Leads and Fills that George brought to all of Lennon McCartney Songs the Beatles as we know would have not existed !!!
I think his friendship with Eric Clapton, the husband in law gave him lots of confidence.

But you failed to mention 'Something' - arguably one of his best songs and voted the #1 love song of all time.... my favorite of all George's songs is "While my Guitar Gently Weeps" - absolutely the most BRILLIANT song!! And George had an AMAZING voice, just LOVED his voice!!
After watching Let it Be, I did not approve of the way George was treated. After being bullied at school, I could see how George felt. George was awesome!!!!

The songs Beware of Darkness, All Things Must Pass, My Sweet Lord...these are my favorite songs by George as a solo artist. As a matter of fact, George's & John's songs are the songs I enjoy the most in the Beatles songbook. Even George's early efforts are preferable to me because you can see the development as his songwriting progresses & improves. It reached his apex in the Beatles with While My Guitar Gently Weeps, Here Comes the Sun, Something, & the great rocker, Old Brown Shoe. RIP George...you are missed. Love you.
George's songs were always my favorites. I liked him from the start in 1964 when I first knew who he was within the band. My appreciation was only magnified as the years went by in their relatively short run. He was always the less ego, look at me, driven I found. But the songs! that's what it came down to.

I got into Harrison when I listened to the original 1967-1970 Blue Album, and realized he had as many songs on the third and fourth sides as John Lennon and Paul, and they were at least as good. I was determined to find out more about him.
I was 13 yrs.old in 1964 when I began listening to all Beatles songs and learned playing them on my guitar. I'm now 73 yrs.old and still play the Beatles songs on my guitar but the majority are George Harrison's songs. "While My Guitar Gently Weeps", "My Sweet Lord" and " Here Comes The Sun" are my most favorite songs that George Harrison wrote. George was

Hard to pick a best liked song between so many great compositions. "If I needed someone" still stands out for me. In later years it might have sounded better with improved technical developments.

Many great songs. While my guitar gently weeps is my favorite.
I always liked George's songwriting and thought he was at the same level as L&M all along....Taxman is one my favorite Beatles songs ever, and my favorite track on Revolver.
George's contributions to Norwegian Wood", "And I Love Her", & "We Can Work It Out" we're also deserving of a Writer's Credit. Even though they were musical devices as opposed to Lyrics, they still MADE the songs and gave those songs their character and identity.
By the same token, Ringo should have had a Writer's Credit for "A Hard Day's Night", which was the Title.
It was significant enough to become the Title of the MOVIE, and L&M were asked to write a song with that Title.
How could they have written it if Ringo had never SAID IT ?
Both George & Ringo made plenty of contributions that should have earned then Royalties.
There are so many for me. Can't decide on just one. George was also a wonderful musician.
As a pre-teen growing up in the '60s, I admired George over the other three. There was something about his music that I felt deep within. When I first heard My Sweet Lord and What is Life, I knew I had to go out and get All Things Must Pass. I saved money from mowing lawns and had my mother bring me to a record store. I wore that album out. These days, after seeing Get Back, I wonder why John and Paul pushed aside George's work. Paul (and John to a lesser extent) put some shitty songs on the White Album, that George could have easily replaced with much better songs. "Why don't we do it in the road" is a piece of crap. I think George saw what Paul was doing, and I wonder if Piggies was a clandestine poke at Paul and those crappy songs he put on the White album.
"Why don't we do it in the road", "Rocky freaking Raccoon". "Helter Skelter", just not good enough, Paul's skills seemed to diminish with time. "Maxwell's Silver Hammer" wtf??
George's contribution to the Beatles should never be understated. From the early days in Hamburg, his vocal contributions (lead and backing) were on a par with John & Paul's and his innovative instrumentational contributions outshone many of his contemporaries. The icing on the cake was forming the Travelling Wilburys, which demonstrated how a supergroup should function in total harmony.
I know, right? Without George, there's no iconic 3 part harmony the Beatles were known for.
I wish he left in "I look at the trouble and the hate that is raging" and "doing nothing but aging" lines. Fitting for then........ and today.
Sadly, people forget his later solo work, too. Adding to more under appreciation. He had many classic songs after All Things Must Pass. Blow Away, Handle With ,Care, All Those Years Ago, Give Me Love Give Me Peace On Earth,Got My Mind Set On You, Crackerbox Palace, You and Life Itself. And that's only some charted songs. George is up there with any composer from the 20th century. Not just Lennon and McCartney.
