The guitar riff on this song is like getting something you've wanted your whole life. That riff runs through my head all the time, regardless of what I'm doing. Melodic, yet brutal. Love it.
I have to admit I'm not the biggest Offspring fan. I've always been into heavier bands but this riff always sticks in my head also. I've been humming it to myself for years.lol.
Ah, I'm 15 again and it's sunny and though I hate school and have zero experience of being an adult, I'm happy and life is as simple as only getting pissed off at school and indeed adults. Now I'm supposed to be one myself and the things that piss me off seem infinite. x
I call bullshit- there were plenty of search engines around from dogpile to whatever- this album released in 99. This is one of my favorite albums but know your history, maybe better said miss the days when everyone looked up the answer on google for everything.
And here I am again, on my bike delivering newspapers with a bag on my back. Inside is my cheapo CD walkman that would skip if you even breathed on it and inside that is this CD. Some of the first tastes of freedom in my life.
When I seen The Offspring in Cincinnati with Stiff Little Finger and (my personal favorite band) Bad Religion, The Offspring played this record cover to cover. It was amazing
Our lives run different ways Through the rain I see you in the sun Our star shines anyway If you wish upon it we are one One, two, three, four Dog eat dog Every day On our fellow man we prey Dog eat dog To get by Hope you like my genocide I find it such a shame Through the pain I see things as they are We're served up on a plate The pedestal is high enough to fall And if in time We can see the errors of our ways Would anyone change it anyhow? Our time is up... One, two, three, four Dog eat dog Every day On our fellow man we prey Dog eat dog To get by Hope you like my genocide Dog eat dog Every day On our fellow man we prey Dog eat dog To get by Hope you like my genocide I bet you'd only run If you saw what goes inside our own I bet you'd lead the way If it were up to you to decide But it's not Dog eat dog Every day On our fellow man we prey Dog eat dog To get by Hope you like my genocide Dog eat dog Every day On our fellow man we prey Dog eat dog To get by Hope you like my genocide Like a silver flame Like a suicide Like killing boy One, two, three, four
I love this song because it is so different and original. This band is eclectic, unique and I like this song and the bands earlier albums' because the guitar and lyrics are so different from what other bands are doing. I have been a fan of The Offspring for 33 years. Love you XOXO!!
I have a story about this song, mid to late 90s, I had this album on cassette then on cd finally and everyday for an entire summer i would blast it so loud before I went skating and my neighbors had kids my age but they were not allowed to listen to this kind of music or do anything that brought them any sorta joy unfortunately, so my room faced one of their daughters rooms and apparently she could hear me play all my music and she looked forward to hearing this offspring album everyday even though she had no idea who she was listening to. I learned all about this many many years later from her cousin who used to be a close friend. He said that it was the high point of her day when I would play this or pennywise. Not gonna lie I almost cried when I heard that cause here I was having the time of my life during those years, just soaking up Everything the 90s had to offer, skating, smoking weed, staying out late , listening to great music and there she was, living what I would consider a miserable life but I never knew it, I hardly ever saw her outside. It's crazy how much joy music can bring to someones life.

When I heard the first note of Offspring, I was 16 years old sitting on the backseat of some friend's car in winter time.He threw the tape cassette in and that's where everything started...🌟
Might be my favorite song from Smash… then again I love the entire album… hard to say I guess. That simple riff with the string talk @ 2:08 just does it for me.
I was listening to KROQ in those days too. They played "what in the world happened to you". My babysitter and I were like "WTF another offspring song? And it doesn't even sound like them??". Remember Jed the Fish?

This album changed my 9yr old brain from innocent to not so ignorant to the world. My GMA bought it for me on cassette at Walmart hahahaha. I'd say that's some replay value. Idk what happened after this album.but.... Smash is prob the single most influential album for me.
Just turned 40, I'd rather drink beers and listen the O-Dudes than brag about 'having' to put in overtime and how hard I've made my life for myself like all those normal fools with their Adult Bills To Pay and Adult Children Mouths To Feed and Proper Adult Worries like... ummm, paying off their student loans from 20 years ago just to be another fucking working stiff. Yeah, you've got a house and a wife you're no longer attracted to, and 2.3 kids you never wanted & a $65,000 Volvo you never wanted :) Fuck this must have been a greater-than-great album back when it first came out. Too bad I was completely distracted with worrying about irrelevant bullshit, i.e. how excessively, brutally hard I'd have to work to qualify as an 'authentic' adult one day, at the time (16 y.o.) Welcome to the club. I was in the military during wartime and I just really hate people being disrespectful.
Listening to this again in 2020. In my 60s... can you say "late bloomer"? Saw them live back in the day. Great stuff to keep the blood pumping.
2018 and I am 15 again. Miss the days when you would read the lyrics from the booklet and not google them...
Or struggling with wrong words without booklets. :')

This makes me nostalgic about a time I never even lived in...
It should. And I'm sorry if you were born at any point later than the 90's. Last great decade, for sure.
