Hey Jyn x Ryl how you doing tonight? Big love from the UK. I enjoy all your reactions and this great movie, this will be just as great. 😎 I'm going to watch Close Encounters next. Take care ladies stay safe. 🍷😎
35:48 The 'wife', Eva, was actually Alonzo's mistress. Remember how in the beginning he said he had 4 kids, but the news report in the end only mentioned 3?
The mistress played by Eva Mendez, was busted by Alonzo for being a mule, carrying six balloons in her belly. Alonzo kept her locked in a motel for 3 days naked and handcuffed sitting in a partially filled bathtub until the cocaine balloons passed out her rectum. He then sold the packages to the gangs for market value. He keeps Eva on a short leash to do his bidding in exchange for avoiding a flengthy prison sentence.
I love this movie and was psyched when I saw you were watching it, Denzel’s performance kicks ass. I had to laugh when Jyn said she was sure that he was a good guy. Something that always stood out for me was that Alonzo spends the whole day breaking laws but the one time he actually stops at a red light is his undoing. The Russians would have gotten him eventually but that one thing seals the deal. Macy Grey gave a good performance also for a smaller part. Ryl asks why he did it on the first day? It’s because he needed someone new and would be above suspicion like he says. If Jake had simply gone with it then Alonzo would have yet another guy he could control but since he didn’t go along, Alonzo set him to get killed. Alonzo wasn’t married to Eva Mendez or actually lived there, she was someone he was cheating on his actual wife with. He pretty much says it when they first go there and refers to her as one of his dimes or side pieces. He obviously has three other sons with his actual wife. They say at the end he’s survived by his three sons but we know he had four. He does such a good job of making you think he’s just a cop doing shit to get stuff done until you see he’s actually corrupt. Btw, you looked confused about the shit pushed in scene. They’re referring to being in prison and getting anal raped. There’s an alternate ending where Jake has an encounter with the three wise men.
FUN FACT: During an interview, the director said that about 70 percent of the script was improvised by Denzel Washington! This includes his famous "King Kong ain't got shit on me!" line which Denzel made up on the spot! This role was a big deal for Denzel at the time because this was the first time he played a villain. Denzel finally won his Best Actor Oscar for this performance.
@ I've heard a lot of A and B list actors say their big come up was taking a role that they weren't sure about. For example, Chris Evans said he turned down the Captain America role multiple times because he didn't see himself playing that character. Now boom he is a household name.
I wonder if he improvised the cigarettes, he always has one in his mouth, but he is never smoking one. I think the only that’s lit is in the bedroom when they’re counting the money.
I don't think he did. He picked out a rookie who could manipulate to take the drugs so he could frame him for the killing. He says I've been planning this for a week.
Lonzo already had the entire thing planned way in advance. He had Jake smoke the wet joint. He made sure that if Jake bolted, he'd use that against him. He had him violate several laws before they ever went to Roger's the first time. He made sure to get enough cash to pay off the vatos. I think he planned it for either event. If Jake was dirty and played along, no problem but if Jake didn't, he'd have him killed and he'd mar Jake's reputation.
Alonzo used to be a "good cop" just like Jake in the beginning of his career but was corrupted by it in the end. Roger even alluded to that when they first visited him at his home. You can see that Alonzo respected his badge; it became his entire identity. It's the reason you saw him react the way he did when Jake snatched his badge from his neck at the end.
Great reaction! Would be cool to see a prequel movie or series about Alonzo and the path that led him down the corrupt path. Denzel is alo really good in the films "Malcolm X" and "John Q" if you looking for more movies to react to
I swear Cliff Curtis can play damn near any character no matter the race. I see him in a movie and I know it’s gonna be good. He always kills it whether it’s a big role or a small role like Smiley. Edit: you gotta love the Jesus shower curtains!!
31:23, two of the three actors playing gangbangers(Cliff Curtis aka Smiley and Ramon Cruz aka Sniper) in this scene actually went on to play honorable law abiding law enforcement officers and family men in other movies and tv shows. Just goes to show they got quite the acting range. Fun fact Cliff Curtis is not hispanic or latino at all. He is actually from New Zealand and is of Maori descent. But due to his ambigious looks and talent for accents, he can play ANYTHING.
ON GOD! .....it was same here my 1st watch in earky 2000s 💁🏻♀️ and still a teen even! my read instantly: ah, hell 🤬 nah....miss me with any of this - soon as he 1st started jivin bout "hookin my wife up with a son". like 👀 you enjoy breathing, bruh? you wanna continue doin that, right?! mhmmm, then STFU
You are my fav reactors. Some quick gems Denzel finally got a best actor Oscar for this. I was lowkey annoyed they gave him for this role though there’s no denying he was amazing as usual. I think he was snubbed for Malcolm X(my best Denzel movie) and a few others. Cliff Curtis (guy that played Smiley the gangster that almost killed Hoyt) is a great character actor from New Zealand. Also, Alfonzo’s character is loosely based on a dirty LAPD cop Rafael Perez who was a big part of the LAPD rampart scandal im the late 90s
One of my favorites and the part played by Clifton Collins as "Smiley" was uncannily accurate! I have an ex who I would have bet money on Clifton studied before playing that part lol!!! Great reaction! ❤
6:30, from what I understand if an officer is undercover and needs to take drugs to maintain their cover its kind of a gray area. At their first opportunity the officer has to report that drug usage to their superior officer. I could be wrong.
Great reaction y’all. I will say this, Jyns’ reaction to Alonzo is more natural. Where I’m from you can spot a cop from a mile away. You wouldn’t clock Alonzo as a cop in real life. And that’s what makes guys like that effective UCs and narco cops. Alonzo is who u want working the streets. His behavior was alarming to Ryl because we KNOW he’s a cop.
Liked your reactions. As you said, we’re used to Denzel playing the good guy, and here he’s true evil. A tribute to how good an actor Denzil Washington truly is - so convincing as a bad cop!
@BruceJohnson-om5kl I don't know if y'all are talking about the same scene. She referenced se7en with the "What's in the box?" line when they were in the car, and he was telling him to hide his love for his family while on the job, cause that's kind of how Mills got victimized...But there were no tv's around, so I think you're talking about a different scene. But I don't remember one of them calling a tv a box either 🤷🏾

Gotta love how he threatened Houit with the same exact fake news story that they actually tell about his ass on the radio at the end of the movie 🤣 Just so u guys know this is actually based on a crooked Rampart cop that was involved with Death Row Records hence why. Dr. Dre & Snoop Dogg are in the film !!!!!

Denzel did theater before his film career, so he’s a pro at his emotions on screen.
Na he always plays as himself , this is about the only movie he tries not to & he still plays himself 🤣
Ryl picked up the vibe immediately!😂
"He looks good doing that. Why does he look so good". Lol! That's right, DENZEL DENZEL😍 . Great Reaction!
35:48 The 'wife', Eva, was actually Alonzo's mistress. Remember how in the beginning he said he had 4 kids, but the news report in the end only mentioned 3?
There have been also some confusion regarding the exact number of kids that Clint Eastwood has, not sure what’s the correct number in 2025.

Every nice go has a demon side to them. With this role Denzel let it all hang out.
Also Denzel son told him to do this role Denzel was gonna turn the role down he didn’t see himself playing the character.

I don’t think I’ve seen anything from Fuqua about ‘70%’ of the dialogue being improv but I’m sure Denzel had pretty free reign
I wonder if he improvised the cigarettes, he always has one in his mouth, but he is never smoking one. I think the only that’s lit is in the bedroom when they’re counting the money.
17:20 yall done reduced Terry Crews to the "making my way downtown🎶" guy 😭

Lonzo originally wanted Jake in his crew but the second he turned down that money at Roger’s he knew he had to get rid of him

If you notice the newscaster at the end says “the officer was survived by his wife and 3 sons” lol Alonzo had a side family with Eva Mendez

“Out of Time” is another good Denzel and Eva movie
I watch the tv show The Rookie. On that series the LA patrol officers refer to their police cars as "The Shop". Not sure if that is true to life.
I also like Denzel in Out Of Time.
I totally agree, Denzel Washington is a very handsome man.

Check out Fallen with Denzel Washington from 1998, it's a great Horror/Thriller.

Jyn and Ryl acknowledge Alonzo’s statement of the girl almost becoming part of the ditch.
Slight clarification: Eva Mendes' character is not Alonzo's wife, she's his mistress. Just to add onto how scummy he is lol.
15:55 "Ok, he looks so good doing that. Why does he look so good?" -Jyn
cause he's Denzel.
Denzel is extremely overrated.

Haha, around the 5 minute mark “I’m sure he’s a good guy”. That one got a genuine chuckle out of me. Was like “oh, just wait and see.”
Another movie by the same director that also has Ethan Hawke in it is "Brooklyn's Finest"
Should look up the Rampart scandal sometime to see what a lot of this was based on
Denzel = 🐐
