My husband recently got diagnosed with depression. And turns out he has been depressed for almost his entire life but he thought it was normal to feel down all the time. Tried exercise but it doesn't make him feel better. He can't stick to any routine. It's just one more activity to do. A chore. He will start meds soon. Thanks for this informative video.
Actually me too. As an Asian, to visit psychiatrist isn't very common. I've been depressed since highschool but I think it's just the ups and downs in life. I'm depressed but I'm living with it. One time it got so bad till anxiety attacked me. I almost lost my mind. But I'm better now.
If you’re “trying exercise,” it sounds like there’s a general health imbalance to both of your lives in general. Get a sleep study to be sure it’s not sleep apnea, start doing meditation and yoga together, lose the stimulants, eat a healthy diet, and introduce new activities.

The issue is dave that this medication 💊 only works when you take it. I too have GAD and depression it always comes backs when the medication is stopped it's a disorder it's for life so the medication should be too. By design the medication is a reuptake inhibitor it has no long term capabilities of repairing a disorder unfortunately the doctors have taken 20 years to learn the basic science of the medication. I hate this medication, personally I am like a sleepy zombie on it but the alternative is even more grave.
If you are taking these meds on a long term basis as I am, but they are still being prescribed by your GP; consider making an appointment with a psychiatrist. They are much more knowledgeable about proper dosage levels, long term use, side effects, etc. Or whether you need additional help such as therapy, or any subtle mood changes that will require a change in your prescriptions. It can make all the difference. Therapy and a good psychiatrist monitoring my medication on a regular basis, was life saving for me. Good luck and hang in there!
I've had a hard time finding help in the psychiatric community, encountering those who are either controlling total know it alls or apathetic. My GP fairly saved my life w prozac. I don't want to go back thru the psychiatric mill.

SSRI’s achieved notoriety years ago when it was discovered that frequently they seemed to help patient’s more than talking therapy. SSRIs were celebrated in Peter Kramer's contemporary classic Listening to Prozac. Kramer’s book was remarkably honest for its time. The book was a discursive memoir by a therapist who is forced to admit that many of his clients seemed rapidly to fare far better on a pill than on his industrial-strength regimen of caring talk-therapy. Science and medicine have advanced to where we now know that pharmacological intervention is initially necessary to boost the brain’s physical strength - much like a muscle. Once the “muscle of the brain” is strong enough for talk therapy, then - and only then - is the patient finally ready for Jungian Psychoanalysis and Behavioral Modification. So really, patients with tired brains are unable to profit from “physical therapy of the mind”, (talk therapy). First, the brain needs to acquire the strength necessary to undergo & profit from talk therapy. The SSRIs all differ in their half-lives, chemical structure, and precise specificities. Their functional effects are broadly similar, though Prozac is the most activating, longest-lasting, least selective and most likely to provoke dose-related akathisia; paroxetine has anticholinergic and sedating antihistaminergic effects; fluvoxamine most commonly induces nausea and has the shortest half-life; and, citalopram is the most serotonin-selective (see citations 2 and 3 regarding heart warnings). The mood-brightening, resilience-enhancing and anti-anxiety properties of the SSRIs really can make a (very) modest percentage of the population feel “better”. Unpredictably, other users feel worse. As a class, SSRIs (mostly) don't have the physically unpleasant and cognitively debilitating anticholinergic effects of the tricyclics. SSRIs don't demand the dietary restrictions of the MAOIs. Their dependence potential and withdrawal reaction is usually milder than the powerful opioids. Overall, SSRI’s operate by blasting more serotonin through the system than any other neurotransmitter. The result is imbalance, a flat affect (which typically diminishes motivation and causes power imbalances among the social fabric of the patient’s life), neuroleptic malignant syndrome, galactorrhea, sleep bruxism, decreased vigilance & tired brain , extremely serious extrapyramidal reactions, and the plethora of other side-effects for which SSRI’s are known (including homicide & suicide). It is important to realize that the efficacy of SSRI’s is somewhat less than that of even the older conventional antidepressants including the tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs). Two common problems limit the usefulness of SSRIs, at least when taken on their own. The problems stem from the indirect inhibitory effect sometimes exerted by SSRI style drugs on dopamine function, a consequence of deliberate selective targeting of the serotonin system. SSRI’s have a very poor performance record in the treatment of obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) which is believed to be related to its inhibition of dopamine in the mesocorticolimbic system. It has been theorized that SSRI’s causing a psychiatric emergency - Restless Leg Syndrome - is precisely a result of SSRI inhibition of dopaminergic systems; a condition corrected by bupropion (Wellbutrin). As we already elucidated in the Mechanisms of Depression section of this text, this is precisely what clinicians should not be doing: limiting dopaminergic function of the mesocorticolimbic systems. Rather we learned that effective treatment requires that we augment the mesocorticolimbic dopaminergic systems! Part of the reason for the effectiveness of Nootropic class drugs is that they stimulate all the monoamines including norepinephrine, serotonin, and dopamine. Where many Nootropics enhances inter-hemisphere communication, SSRI’s such as fluoxetine (Prozac) impair it. First, SSRIs can compromise libido and sexual performance, often times lingering long after cessation of the drug. SSRI-induced sexual dysfunction can still be a highly distressing phenomenon for older people too embarrassed to talk about it. These side-effects exacerbate one of the major signs of depression: loss of interest in sex and reduced libido. Proper treatment strategies must not induce sexual dysfunction. SSRI's have killed at least 800,000 patients in the USA since January 2000. If it weren’t for the Citizens United case (the USA Supreme Court case permitting Congressional bribery by Corporations), and the fact that heads of pharmaceutical industries sit on the board of the U.S. FDA, there is little doubt that SSRI’s would have been banned outright years ago. Second, though a few subjects may feel mildly euphoric, in time most patients succumb to a flat affect and loss of motivation in their lives. What many treating physicians have observed is that the flattening of the patients affect by SSRI’s will more often than not, subtly change the "balance of power" in personal relationships - for good or ill. In some cases, SSRIs may even act as thymoanaesthetisers which diminish the intensity of felt emotion, both positive & negative, giving way to a “flat affect”. By contrast, a mood-brightening serotonin reuptake-enhancer like tianeptine (Stablon) may intensify positive emotion or sense of wellness & hope. Affective flattening may be welcome to someone in the pit of unmitigated clinical depression - But there are much better options light years ahead of SSRI’s. Succumbing to a flat affect is scarcely a life-enriching property. A recent analysis cited the specific serotoninergic mechanisms associated with SSRI’s for making patients worse. The researchers also found tianeptine to resolve depression in these patients whose symptoms were worsened by SSRI’s. By the late 1990’s, a backlash against SSRIs finally gathered enough pace to substantiate a flurry of lawsuits. In February 2008, a Public Library of Science meta-analysis of four commonly prescribed "second generation" antidepressants - using both published and withheld drug-company data - reported that SSRIs were scarcely more effective as antidepressants than placebos. The illustrious UK psychopharmacologist Professor David Healy delivers an even more damning verdict on contemporary psychiatry: "there is probably no other branch of medicine where the outcomes for a core disease are steadily worsening." [p. 95; Shock Therapy by Edward Shorter and David Healy (2007)] Today enormous class-action lawsuits are underway against the makers of SSRI’s - Soon to be filed against physicians prescribing them too! In summary, the old concept of a single isolated monoamine system resulting in depression is no longer tenable. This concept was frightfully over simplistic. Today science has extensively mapped out how physical (organic/histological) alterations in a CNS ecosystem lead to multi-faceted chemical alterations and neurosis. Replacing a single monoamine creates a further imbalance to this delicate ecosystem along with extensive negative side-effects. On the other hand, proper treatment of this neurosis begins with regrowth of key structures of the mesocorticolimbic dopaminergic system. In other words, the development and rationale for SSRI deployment were based upon a disproven myth. “The science backing selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors, or SSRIs, as an effective remedy for increasing serotonin levels in the brain and helping depression sufferers achieve mental ‘balance’ is entirely nonexistent,” warns a prominent psychiatrist in a new peer-reviewed editorial published in the esteemed British Medical Journal (BMJ)… “…the entire premise behind SSRIs and how they supposedly work is based on a myth.” Healy warns that the drugs, which have been linked to provoking both suicidal and homicidal tendencies in some users, have never been scientifically shown to balance anything in the brain. ”
Serotonin is an ancient chemical communicator found in big chunk of life forms involving plants, animals and algae. They have myriad functions. Humans till now never achieved a clarity on how these systems works. Simply stopping reuptake and making available more serotonin is foolishness. The compounded effect of that on interconnected systems cannot be predicted. Many of those are permanent dysfunctions. SSRIs are utter rubbish. Modern medicine is increasingly put forwarding many hypothesis' akin to physicists, but that approach will not work with complicated still unexplored systems like brain and cns. Humans first should study more about brain and cns, then things will become more clearer. Anyway this is not the right time to market a drug like SSRIs.
@@sarathua1976 - the neurotransmitter model died of natural causes a couple decades ago. The model used now is the Neuroplasticity model. The solution now is to grow entirely new neurometworks. There is a class of drugs to do this called, Nootropics. However, to protect corporate pharma monopolies, the USA has access to none of those drugs. The closest the USA comes to a nootropic is bupropion.

To get FDA approval, medications were not studied for long term affects. Now we know that the longer you take them, the more dependent you become. Over time, your body's ability to utilize its own neurochemicals is destroyed. Going off of them is very very difficult. You experience not just relapse, but hellish withdrawal. Your original symptoms magnified to the point that you want to die!
Look for the source of depression before treating the effects because antidepressants can be used to distract yourself from unprocessed emotion. I recommend learning from abraham hicks, she is great at helping everyone search for joy. Even this dude says after you stop talking depression medication that your depression will relapse. This dude is very knowledgeable so not bashing or saying he's wrong.

For many, this is extremely dangerous. You wish you had your normal depression and anxiety back, after experiencing chemical terror and wanting to kill yourself. My friend, a fellow sufferer said this... I one day know I will write a book and I’ll call it “Jump” - All based on my own experience and debilitating climb out of Akathisia and the phenomenon of Antidepressants induced neurological suicide. When Prozac came on the market in 1989 a small percentage of people all jumped to there deaths within a couple of days of starting the drug. One survivor had said he felt like he was jumping out of his skin and was so restless that he just needed it to stop. It’s not just Prozac it has happened with all antidepressants. For some reason though Prozac induces it the worst. This isn’t fiction at all. There’s articles in medical journals that tried the best with language to explain it.

Does anyone here think the reason we are depressed / anxious is our body signalling that society is causing depression / Anxiety. If you are sensitive to the environment then I find people get these mental health issues. The medication just numbs or causes the brain to view reality so it’s bearable rather than addressing the bigger issues in society causing people to be depressed.

Then years later I was having nerve pain in my good arm & my Dr talked me into trying a low dose that only lasted 2 weeks. I’m in a lot of different amputee groups on FB and 90% have had near the same experience
And one of the side effects is akathisia. You know that “black box warning” of “may cause suicide?”. They don’t tell you HOW they had to die. It’s called akathisia and it’s hell on earth. Don’t fear death, fear things you have to live with like permanent brain injury and a life left tortured. It’s not worth the risk to patients unless they are beyond severely depressed. One of me is too many.
I got brain injury from going of Effexor cold turkey…25 years of that poison….I’m hoping I’ll heal up..but I’m starting in my 5th month…not much improvement.
I'm like a zombie on prozac 16 hours sleep a day not by choice and I am only on a low 20mg it's still better than how I was feeling with GAD and major depression 😔 but it doesn't feel sustainable either. Been on it 6 months now and the issue is getting worse and it doesn't stop the rumination it literally helps me sleep and tones down my sensitivity to noise and helps with derealization. All that sounds great but I still have panic attacks and seem to have inherited a want to fight fisticuffs because prozac has made me lose a inherited fear that I always lived with. I can get really bad red mist on this medication but in-between those moments I am strangley calm in a ted bundy way 🤣
Took my first dose today, I’ve been hesitant for years to try medication. I couldn’t deal with my anxiety anymore. Im hopeful that these meds will work out. Wish me luck

@@markhuntermd I feel pity for humanity, that FDA, the agency responsible for safekeeping the health of citizens of the world's most developed and richest country allowed the use of SSRIs, which are nothing but half baked science.

My psychiatrist said Prozac occasionally causes insomnia which is why it’s better to start it in the morning
Long video. Really wanted to watch, might try again later.
I watch every video on youtube at 1.25x -1.50x speed
Getting off sometimes relapses...Not really, you get hooked. The mechanism of action is still a mystery.
For some people like myself have a “natural” chemical in balance that is the source of our depression
I fought against taking a antidep for a year and a half. I trusted integrative medicine, therapy of all kinds… until I got my pulse moved from 75 to 180 in 2 sec. Ambulance, hospital. So scary that I said ok now I will try Sertraline and it gave me my life back. I enjoy the present moment. I am even a better version of myself. And I am far to be on the highest dosis.
Does it work ? Is it safe ? My synapses doesn’t connect well … can I take it ?
I’ve been Taking a 100mg dosage a day. That and having sex regularly have me feeling more happy, confident and ready to accomplish.
Cannabis. Love it.
it's not for everyone
100% agreed. I take CBD Oil every night, & I wake up happy every morning. No SSRI’s for me. No sir!
@@3cardmonty602 Placebo snake oil. I took 300mg a day for almost 5 months and I did nothing. I guess like everything else it's not for everyone. I also heard you need the full spectrum CBD oil but unfortunately for me even the smallest amount of THC cause serve to panic attack anxiety for me. It makes me sad cause everyone keeps saying it's a miracle cure. My opinion it's all placebo
What about Wellbutrin?
I took zoloft years ago and developed leaky capillaries.
What are those?

Don’t take any of these and find a doctor who can help you find something non-addicting and natural. I was prescribed Zoloft for depression and ended up stopping after a few days measuring it made me feel like not doing anything; as someone else already said in the comments. Also, have your Vit D level checked. Most people are low in Vit D and this can make you feel depressed.
Good to check thyroid and B-12 levels as well.
I did all of that. Exercise, supplements, light boxes, aromatherapy, e.t.c. zoloft sucked, welbutrin made my hair fall out in fistfuls, prozac saved my life! And I was very resistant to taking it. So don't tell ppl it's poison & don't take it. I gave in after 20 yrs & it's made all the difference
Don't tell strangers to stop taking their meds. That's irresponsible and unhelpful. Would you tell a diabetic to quit insulin? For some, these medications are life saving. By all means, refuse them for yourself. But stay in your lane when it comes to everyone else. Some of us have had huge success.
@@sorscha I said to find out from their doctors if there are natural alternatives. I would never suggest stopping cold turkey if someone has been on medication for long period of time. That’s dangerous. Bit if there’s an natural alternative that works for them, they should go that route over chemical medications.
@@nona104 your opening words were literally, "Don't take any of these". At least have the courage to stand by your own words. Nothing in your original comment suggested people should be careful and step their meds down. You said not to take them. Meanwhile, everything is chemicals, even natural stuff. Like arsenic.
Dextrose and dextrose tablet. Same as aspirin and glucose local to Stanton hb or Anaheim. Grieving process dextrose and glucose tablet requested for civilian or medical plaza area here.
My mom takes Zoloft and I was just prescribed Prozac so I’m interested to know the difference
How is it? I know it depends on the person but whats the difference you are seeing?
How are you doing now are you still on Prozac?
What an intro!!!
Sertraline is nasty. I went through jell on this with side effects and withdrawal.
Verey informative video. A suggestion to relax the mind--To feel better reduce negative thoughts [overthinking]. Your breathing is closely related to the brain [mind] and gives good relief from stress-anxiety. To relax sit on a chair or lie down, neck straight, eyes closed and observe the sensations of your incoming--outgoing breath at the entrance of the nostrils for 5-10-15 minutes or more. Don’t fight your thoughts. With daily practice the mind will relax. No deep breathing needed. Do the practice without any expectations when taking a walk, before sleep, in school, at work, when reading, etc. Like me, make this a lifetime daily habit to have a better life. Reduce negative social media, take morning sunlight walks and avoid constipation as it affects the mind instantly. Best wishes--Counsellor.
I do intermittent fasting and skip breakfast. Is that a problem?
Thank you
I’m scared to start lexapro because of the side effects
Made me tired and gave me brain zaps, gained 20lbs, on Prozac now and love it
Hey bob and brad, can u guys pls do a video about the various covid 19 vaccines and their possible short term and long term effects?
They did but took it down because of mass downvoting and anti vaxxers freaking out and arguing with everyone in the comments section and saying they unsubbed because the vaccine is evil and it’s not okay to say you support vaccines
haha, Chris the pharmacist did a vid on the benefits of the cv vax and had to remove it due to strong feelings.
@@randyjohnson9147 I bet you’re a pro- vaxer who hasn’t done your research on the safety and effectiveness of the injection and just follows the common narrative.
@@nona104 no, I’ve done my research and went to med school. Not interested in hearing from someone who gets their info from anti vax Facebook groups like you presumably do
The long term effects can not be determined yet! I'm happy to give my dose up for those who want to be lab rats for this experimental gene therapy.
doc starting me on prozac. i'm optimistic. :)

@@shyaaammeneen63 im on lexapro rn just upped the dose T.T
@@catedoge3206 Obviously under medical supervision. Keep a target of 2 months by when you will reduce the dose to the lowest mg and take it late evening or night as the effect lasts for the next day. Since many years I have made it a habit to observe my breath sensations even during my normal activities and I am feeling relaxed and healthy. Anywhere-anytime it can be done. The best part is nobody comes to know that you are doing the breath observing practice as there is no deep breathing or sound. Read my msg and do the practice regularly to feel better. Best wishes. I've been on Clonanzapam for 6 years. Now at .50mg daily. I tried to taper, but the sides were too intense for me to handle so my Dr wants to stack it with .50mg of Prozac to fill in while I taper off the benzos. I don't want to do it, but it seems I might have no choice. The benzos have made it worse.
Hey my man are these bots whit mushrooms and other crap?
Sertaline made me worse and tired all the time now they are switching to Prozac 👌
i started taking prozac for severe depression a couple weeks ago, dont feel antidepressants yet, still dehabilitatingly ill
they are working now, it was a shockingly fast change i almost didnt believe it was from the meds, but i guess they work, i can eat again and can move and can get out of bed whenever i want to, i can even go to the restroom now.
Thanks
My doctor has me on 100mg Zoloft and 20mg Prozac is this ok?
More dangerous than you may think. Has anyone in the video ever taken them?
Good question!! 😂
Chris is a pharmacist. But what do years and years of study tell you that one person using them for a week doesn’t, right?
(Yes, I have used them. They have literally saved my life.)
Sertraline caused me to sleep 15 hrs a day.
Fluoxetine has lifted me out of suicidal depression & I'm happier than I've been in many years.

Have been on Sertraline since more than a year for general anxiety disorder, tachycardia, anxiety. First weeks at 50 were strange. Felt I had a flue, pre menstrual syndrome like. After 2 weeks I felt stronger, more energy, calm, more patience. As I felt from time to time chest pain I increase to 75 then 100 mg. Felt great and more performant in all but I put on 12 kgs, despite sport 4 h a week. My blood analysis are good but suddenly my triglycerides jumped… I decreased slowly and I m back to 50mg. I m a bit more moody but ok. I started a diet under endocrinologist control. My therapist thinks fluoxetine is better to loose weight as provided to patients with food disorder. I need to talk to my psychiatrist. Anyone with this experience and tips? Thanks
How come I felt Prozac day one
I have been on Sertraline 100gm for 10 years
Me too
Me three, but its closer to 15. Been off it a couple of times but depression and anxiety kick back in.
Me too
Does anyone here think the reason we are depressed / anxious is our body signalling that society is causing depression / Anxiety.
If you are sensitive to the environment then I find people get these mental health issues. The medication just numbs or causes the brain to view reality so it’s bearable rather than addressing the bigger issues in society causing people to be depressed.
are there any medications you would recommend for a 12 yr old child for anxiety
They are probably gonna prescribe them Zoloft. I was placed on it at 14. Worked great for me
And I know in time you can fight doctors Lawyers are too expensive is there any lawsuits with this medication
Great info and video however, the song at the start is ultimate cringe. Yours, Tom - the most famous commentator on the internet.
I was given Sirtraline (UK) made me quite ill and a Headache and Tinnitus that I got before from Gabapentin ended up with the high pitch sound turned up and its not gone away, it's actually very annoying and makes depression even worse.
13 years ago Gabapentin messed with my head bad, granted I wasn’t in a good mental spot since I had just lost my arm. I was on a extremely high does 800mg a day (if I remember right) for 6-7 months after that I couldn’t afford it anymore so I winged myself off of it & so thankful I did cause I finally felt normal. Then years later I was having nerve pain in my good arm & my Dr talked me into trying a low dose that only lasted 2 weeks. I’m in a lot of different amputee groups on FB and 90% have had near the same experience
@@melissaakanubby8774 Wow. Hope you're OK Don't give up.
I was told it was supposed to be for Epilepsy originally?
And one of the side effects is akathisia. You know that “black box warning” of “may cause suicide?”. They don’t tell you HOW they had to die. It’s called akathisia and it’s hell on earth. Don’t fear death, fear things you have to live with like permanent brain injury and a life left tortured. It’s not worth the risk to patients unless they are beyond severely depressed. One of me is too many.
I got brain injury from going of Effexor cold turkey…25 years of that poison….I’m hoping I’ll heal up..but I’m starting in my 5th month…not much improvement.

It helps your depression?
I'm getting heart palpitations, racing heart, heavy legs, i feel the urge to run randomly can't stop shaking my legs sometimes
Did it go away?
I'm like a zombie on prozac 16 hours sleep a day not by choice and I am only on a low 20mg it's still better than how I was feeling with GAD and major depression 😔 but it doesn't feel sustainable either. Been on it 6 months now and the issue is getting worse and it doesn't stop the rumination it literally helps me sleep and tones down my sensitivity to noise and helps with derealization. All that sounds great but I still have panic attacks and seem to have inherited a want to fight fisticuffs because prozac has made me lose a inherited fear that I always lived with. I can get really bad red mist on this medication but in-between those moments I am strangley calm in a ted bundy way 🤣
Drs overmedicate us constantly. These drugs are dangerous.
What about Paroxetine or Paxil??
Jersey Stotler. Paxil and Effexor are the worst antidepressants to taper. Almost impossible. Research any drug your doctor prescribes before taking.
