    Hi I’m a Los Angeles personal chef that specializes in Lao cuisine so I love seeing you highlight Lao food and yall went to one of my favorite lao restaurants, Nok’s Kitchen 😍 you did a great job with the research on the country and food. Appreciate the thoughtfulness in the video! Just one little note for the future to impress your Lao and Southeast Asian friends, larb is pronounced laab without the “r”. I know it’s confusing but please trust me. I even have a whole #notlarb campaign used to promote the correct laab pronunciation. And I see you used one of my sticky rice photos from my website! Glad it was useful. Typically, sticky rice is eaten with your hands with the foods. You will impress so many when they see you eating it correctly. Anyways, hope you try more Lao foods. There is so much! If you ever want to try cooking Lao food, I share all my written Lao recipes at www.saengskitchen.com

    As a Cambodian, Laotian food is the bomb. We Cambodians hardly get any recognition. Laotian people get zero. So good to see Laotian representation here
    Edit: oh yeah Laotian food is hella spicy. Beats Thailand easily

    Lao sausage is my favorite type of sausage. If you’re ever interested in learning more about Lao food and how to cook other recipes, Saeng Douangdara is my go-to on here. He posted recently how Lao food isn’t talked about enough and you guys sharing SEA cuisine with your audience excites me! Thanks lovelies for this vid.

    the old photo of the Hmong people.... hits hard. but the whole reason for sticky rice is to use it to scoop up minced meat or sauce so the rice doesn't break all apart.

    • @YBChangOfficial

      that makes sense. so much stickier than Korean rice, I love it!!

    Awww, no Lao-style papaya salad with raw crab and fermented fish sauce. I've tried it here in Silverlake and even though I grew up on fermented fish and shrimp paste, that was a challenging dish for me. Sometimes it comes with marinated raw crab (which I'm sure Herbert would've been very, VERY challenged by. I think it would be nice if you went to the islands of Indonesia or even Sri Lanka for your next one. Keep going South. I love his reactions as well as your attention to the history of the cuisine and how colonization is a factor. Keep it up, YB!

    Yayyyy, I've been waiting for this!!! I love listening to how other people pronounce things. Maybe it's just me, but both of my parents are Laotian so we pronounce things a little different in my household. Khao (rice) we usually pronounce like 'cowt' with a soft T sound, and larb is pronounced like 'lawp' with a soft P sound. Also lao sausage is soooo good, my husband loves whenever my mom makes it for us.

    • @YBChangOfficial
      @YBChangOfficial  2 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      ah thank you!! I probably am not pronouncing it correctly, I tried to learn from google translation but it's not always accurate haha

    Yes! thank you for trying out Lao food... Sticky rice is synonymy's with Lao cuisine like how the baguette is to French cuisine. Not the same as sushi rice or other types of "sticky" rice. I noticed the Lao sticky rice has a distinct texture and thank you for doing a bit of research into the complex history of the introduction of Lao food to the U.S.

    I find it so funny that Vietnamese are so easily influenced. Not just in the past but modern times as well.
    France colonized both Laos and Vietnam, but Laos never adopted French cuisine while Vietnamese now start their days with coffee with banquette. If you visit any bakery, you will realize it's like 80% French pastries xD

    I read the book "the spirit catches you and you fall down" this year. In the book the author talks to people who made that journey across the mekong river, and it was treacherous. It was honestly one of the best books ive ever read in my entire life and i think it made me a better person. I am now pursuing a degree in public health because of the effect it had on me. I'd recommend it to anybody working in healthcare or anybody who loves to learn.
