This is invaluable information. Thanks for sharing your story of a very difficult lesson learned so we can avoid this possible heartache and headache as well. As you continue your breeding program with more ram lambs from the nearby farms, do you ever have related animals that you need to keep track of to prevent inbreeding? (e.g. ewe lamb that is born of ram genetics from nearby Farm A is introduced to brother of her father, also from Farm A)
Fortunately, my current ewes are from a different state and the three breeders I buy lambs from periodically replace their own rams. Thank You for watching
Thank You for watching. I do it every year: but a ram for $150 or so, raise him until his business is done and then eat him. No extra mouths to feed and no mean sheep. 😊
Thank You for your service. I did not think about this approach. I bought 5 ewes and 1 ram this last summer. The ewes are Katahdin and the ram is a St Croix. I believe they are due November maybe early December for lambing. Mistake number 1. Since I only have 4 acres it is difficult to separate them. I may have to sell him and start the purchase butcher plan. What month do you usually purchase a ram lamb and what month do you send him on? Hopefully I can make my mistakes and learn from them. Ultimately I would love to figure out how to lease land and maybe increase my operation.
Thank You for watching. Great choice in sheep! I generally buy or lamb in February/March and ship in November, but I sent them earlier this year mostly because getting butcher dates were difficult. I generally book a year out minimum. Sometimes, people buy a harness with chalk so they can tell which ewes are bred, but it’s cumbersome.

I did the same thing with Nigerian Dwarf goats simply because I didn't want to keep a stinky buck around. It worked pretty well.
They do smell terrible. We had a few here at one time . This has been a terrible year as far as not having many born here
This is a game changer! I never thought of this but I think this will be my strategy this year. Thank you for sharing this

Good way to raise sheep!
Thank You
Some folks have no character…like the lady who sues her way to a new car! 😖
More good advice!
Everyone sued everyone now and takes no accountability
