I purchased the Dr. Color Chip Road Rash Repair Kit two weeks ago and finally got the chance to put it to use yesterday. I'm not typically one to review, but I couldn't be happier with this product. I must've had a thousand little chips on the front end of my 325i and after following the instructions in this video, my baby looks fresh off the lot. This stuff really does do wonders. Big thanks to Otto and the Bavauto crew!
In general, the answer is yes. We have had moderate to good success in repairing long scratches. Actually, the deeper the scratch, the better the success. Certainly give it a try. We would use the "1st method" as you noted; the paint chip repair kit and the BMW touch-up paint. Just experiment with how long you need to let the paint cure, so that the removal process does not "de-paint" the scratch.
If the droppings have eaten into the paint, you'll need to try a standard rubbing compound. This is the most abrasive compound, which then must be followed by polishing compound and then very fine polishing/waxing compound. If the rubbing compound does not go far enough, sanding is the next step.
Great video! I agree with Bav Auto on primer. Clean and prep with a pre cleaner, use a high quality urethane paint, it will make a permanent repair. There is a lot of misinformation about using primer and 1K clear for hand touch ups. Most of the misinformation is poor translation from spraying automotive urethane paint....totally different technique. Just one tip - always apply a paint sealant to the entire area you repaired. The solvents strip any wax or sealant during the process.
Yes, indeed .... paint color match makes an impact on the final repair. Most would agree, that the filled and repaired chips certainly look better than without, especially when done as shown here, as you do not get the obvious lumps of dabbed-on paint.
Kameron Sshroeder - We can't reply directly to your comment as it was sent in via Google - It really depends on saying how big is too big. In general, you may have a hard time with anything over 1/2" in diameter. The main point is that the bigger the repair spot is, the harder it is to not pull the paint out of the middle of the chip. Letting the paint cure a bit longer can help with this.
Your color match will depend on your individual vehicle and how the original paint has aged. Try a small test to see how well the paint matches. We did notice that the Hellrot BMW touch-up paint that we showed in the video (for the Paint Chip Repair kit) was a bit darker than the 18 year old original paint. With this noted, the Road Rash Kit paint was a better match.
Umm ... not sure just what you're asking. However, the Road Rash kit is manufactured by the company that makes the kit. They mix their own paints. The touch-up paint that was used for the Paint Chip Repair kit was factory BMW.
We choose not to specifically show the clear-coat application, as we have found that most people end up not using it. However, the most complete application would indeed include the clear-coat application. In this case, you would keep the color coat a bit concave (below the surrounding paint surface), which would then allow the clear-coat to act as the final "blob' to be leveled down to the surrounding surface.
The touch-up paint does not require a primer, for chip repair. Just be sure that the repair area is fully clean, by using the sanding pen and the Wurth or supplied pre-paint cleaner.
great job on the video. These always motivate me to get these things taken care of on my car. They also clear up my skeptical thoughts on the kit. It seemed too easy, but now I understand it really does look pretty simple.
Well ..... it all depends. If you can wait to do your detailing work, do the chip repair first and then after at least two weeks, do all of the detailing work. OR Do all of your detail work, then do the chip repair. Note that you will have top clean the area to remove the waxes and compounds before beginning. Once done, you can spot detail the repaired areas after a couple weeks.
No, we do not. However, if the paint has been damaged pas what a typical rubbing compound, then polishing compound will clean up, You will have to do some sanding and then go back to the rubbing compound and the polishing compound.
This issue is addressed in the text, on our blog post, that goes along with this video (blog.bavauto.com). Since the touch-up paint is an enamel (which continues to fully cure, over a longer time period), you should really wait a few weeks before polishing and covering it with wax.
Really amazing video, very informative and to the point! love "like someone's blasted a shotgun full of grit" first thing I thought of when I saw the chips.I will defo be trying this when I get a few chipsThanks!
Excellent video....I just bought a BMW with many rock paint chips in hood and some chips reveal the metal. Will this method work when bare metal is exposed? Thanks....
Excellant tutorial! Just had a question. If you are in the process of restoring a finish with clay, swirl remover, polish, etc, what stage of the chip repair would you fit this in?
Helrot is non-metallic paint, right? It would be really nice if you'd make a video of using BMW factory touch-up kit (1st method) on some metallic paint, AND to show us how would you apply clear coat. Thanks!
For the Langka method, you said to let it dry for 5-20 minutes before rubbing with the blob eliminator. Langka instructions say to let it dry for 2-24 hours. Have you tried it both ways?
When do you use the clear coat that comes with the factory touch up paint? I dont think you mentioned it in the video. I applied it after using the touch up paint, and it didn't sit smoothly on the paint. What do you use to take that glob of clear coat down?
Thanks for a great tutorial. I'm a BMW lover with an E39 540i but this paint chip repair is needed for my other car- a 2002 B6 Audi A4. Do your products work equally well with this car? And does one never need to apply primer for all kinds of touchup paints or is it something about BMW paints specifically? Danke!
Hi There, excellent instructional video. I have the kit and shop at bavauto regularly, but I do have one question. I used the exact same procedure, sanding pen etc., and I accidentally left the paint on too long and now the blob remover is not taking down the excess paint. What do you recommend? I did try using the blob remover a second time with more force and the paint bubbles went down somewhat but a lot of paint came off the chips. Suggestions or recommendations? Thanks! p.s. is there a certain temperature range you recommend working in? I have no choice but to do it in my underground parking which is 50 degrees or lower, is that warm enough?
I agree with Bav Auto, quality urethane paint will yield a permanent repair. Base color and leveling with a solvent gives the flattest least noticeable repair. I dont recommend clear on top of the base color touch up to my customers. pro's that do hand touch ups leveling method don't typically apply clear either. Hand applied clear coat is not the same as original 2K clear coat finish. If you apply clear on top of the "leveled" base color - you defeat the purpose, end up with a ugly paint bump.
Hi, Can you use the Dr. Color Chip Road Rash Repair Kit or the Paint Chip Repair Kit on cars other than BMW or Mini (specifically a '98 Toyota MR2)? Regards
The Road Rash kit does not come with clear. If you are using the Paint Chip Repair Kit, and the BMW touch-up paint, the BMW paint comes with both the color and the clear. We generally do not bother with the clear when filling chips. If you DID want to apply the clear, you would fill the color to a level BELOW the surrounding paint. Let it cure .... then, apply the clear as the final "blob" and use the kit as shown in the video, to level the clear.
With the BMW factory paint, do I use the same steps with the clearcoat after the paint cures? I didn't see the application of clearcoat in this video, and was curious if the paint was considered enough.
He answered this question in another comment: "The Road Rash kit does not come with clear. Hi, just a quick question, i see you mention many times "just reapply paint" after failed paint leveling, but my question is do you need to clean the area before reapplying the paint to remove the solvent? Or do you just let it dry or something?
Hi there, I would like to do this on my BMW Z3 with one of these kits. They come with everything used here? And do you ship to New Zealand as that's where I'm based. Thanks.
Hi. I tried the Dr. Colorchip road rush on my car, and it always coming out from the missing parts. I tried to wait longer, to put more and less from the blending solution, and I tried with a card. It never fills even the smallest dots or scratches. Saab 9-3 CV, color code 268. (Metallic silver) Do you have any idea? Thanks.
I'm wondering if is it possible to use the Quixx Scratch Remover over the same area where Roadrash was once applied (assuming that you´ll get a scratch AFTER doing the job) without removing it. Will the paint be completely cured after 2 weeks or so?
btw i have a 97 e36 318i bmw how do i go about foinding out what color code it is or the name of it? Its red very very similar to the car you just repaired
The paint code sticker (on the E36 3-series models) is on the driver side (left side) shock tower, facing the front of the car. The color name will be in the middle of the sticker and the code will be in small lettering at the bottom of the sticker.
Can I use the first method to repair a 20 cm deep scratch made by screwdriver/key? My 2008 750li got scratched on both sides by unknown bad guys last year. :( thank you for making the video.
Silver is nearly impossible to match with touch up paint, I'v had 2 silver cars and the painted chips stick out a mile. Talking to painters, they say silver is one of the hardest to match which is why it is blended into surrounding panels.
A question: I have a black 1997 BMW 5. There are a number of chipped spots on the front in which the color white is visible. Also, there are several scratches in which a reddish color shows through. So, do I need to apply primer to either before applying the black paint? Thanks very much.
I got OEM paint from BMW dealership but I notice the colors are not the perfect match, I've been warned beforehand, saying the paints won't match probably because of environmental effects like the sun fading original paint. Are the differences obvious on paint under direct sunlight?
What other fluid/solvent can I use to wipe off the excess paint if I don't have the repair kit. I mean a fluid from the hardware or autoshop. Are there specific parameters i have to watch out for or something?
acetone i am sure will work i think compound can work as well, but i could be wrong ab out the compound and i'm going to do it tomorrow so if you would like to know the outcome let me know so i can get it in my response list to respond.
Woops .... missed showing that step for the video, after the paint curing. We also will allow the full paint cure and apply one of our high quality waxes.
Hey, Bavarian Will this be only paint or will it look like "new". New cars have paint aswell as another film over there again (I dont know what the english name for it is.) Clearcoat perhaps? What bout clearcoat?
The BMW touch-up paint does come with a bottle of clearcoat (just clear paint). We typically do not use the clearcoat when doing the chip repairs. However, if you wish to use the clearcoat, you would make sure that the color is below the mzin surface, so that the clear could finish filling the chip and be level with the surrounding paint.
How does this work on metallic paints? As the red you demonstrated on is a flat color would it hide any paint work better than a metallic? I have the carbon black and it looks terrible with stone chips on the hood as the white/grey undercoat contrasts with the black so they really stand out.
BavarianAuto- Quick question for you...I have a 2001 e46 Sedan that I just got. I noticed there was a small (maybe 2inx2in) square "hole" in the right side of the front bumper. I assume its either temperature related or some safety feature...My question is, is there supposed to be some sort of "screen" or "insert" that goes in front of it..? Because mine is just completely open and im afraid that something might go into it. Thank you for ANY information! Keep up the great vids! They've been an absolute LIFE-SAVER for me!!!
The hole is likely the access to the point where the tow-eye is inserted. There would normally be a cover in place. We can offer you a replacement cover. Note that it will not be painted. We can also offer you the spray-can matching paint. Contact out advisors at 800-535-2002 or check our online store at bavauto.com . The part is called a tow hook cover.
BavarianAuto Awesome! I will def do that! One more question...While pulling my bumper off I noticed a "Sensor" right in front of the passenger-side wheel well...The wires weren't connected though...what is this sensor..? (Ps: Not the Temp sensor but almost in the same place on the other side of the bumper...
Hi! just bought a 04 e60 520i sedan in titangau 2 metallic (titanium grey 2). there are quite a bit of chips on the front bumper plus some scratches made by previous owner. there are also a bit of worn paint on the rear bumper below the trunk. i bought the BMW touch up paint with right color code (a36 titangrau 2 met.) but when i tested it on a pice of aluminum it seems some shades darker than the paint on the car. what should i do?
Try topping with the clear coat to see if this changes the shade to be a better match. Other than this, you may just be seeing the difference between the sprayed paint and the brush-on touch-up.
We can order kits for any car. We just need the year, model, paint color name and the color code. You can call our advisors at 800-535-2002 with this info, to place an order.
If the scratch is deep enough to hold any paint, either kit will work. If you can't feel the scratch (like catch your fingernail in it), you should be able to polish it out (use the quixx scratch remover polish - www.bavauto.com/fland.asp?part=00050-US). If the scratch is through the color coat and does need filling, you can first try either the Road Rash kit or the factory paint and the "Blob Eliminator" kit. (www.bavauto.com) try leaving the paint a bit longer before pulling off the extra, it it tends to all pull out of the scratch.
As has been my experience, filling in paint chips does not get an invisible repair result, mostly due to the fact that the paint on the car has aged and bleached out a bit. Too bad there isn't a technique for compensating for that. If you have lots of repairs done this way the car ends up looking like it has the measles, depending on the color, of course.
The paint code sticker should be on the passenger side strut tower. Look for a rectangular sticker, about 1" x 4". Either black with white lettering or white with black lettering. As a last resort, call our advisors at 800-535-2002 and we can look it up using the VIN.
I purchased the Dr. Color Chip Road Rash Repair Kit two weeks ago and finally got the chance to put it to use yesterday. I'm not typically one to review, but I couldn't be happier with this product. Easy to follow. Question. What do you do with the BMW factory clear coat stick that comes with the paint stick?
thank you for the great video... techniques and products I didn't even know were available!
Great video! It was clear and easy to understand! Just what I was looking for. Thank you!
awesome video.
i just bought a 2013 camaro ss that has 3 stone chips...will use this method to put it right

Thanks! Take your time and you'll have a great improvement.
+Hunter Weaver How well did it work?
You have very professional videos and they are great help...Keep up the good work :-)
Very professional. Great demo.
I have a 2006 325xi, i really need to do this. Thanks for the upload, ill check out your site for sure.
Thanks, Zed
We're glad to be able to help you out!

Yes, the paint pens will work with the Paint Chip Repair kit. Just experiment with how much to apply and how long to let it cure.
Wow! I can't wait to try this on my M. Thanks!
This was a great and informative video.
What I'd like to see in the future? This video +clear coat
does the solvent clean excess paint too
if i have chip repair kit from other company
and is it better use your finger and not the brush?
Hi There, excellent instructional video. I have the kit and shop at bavauto regularly, but I do have one question. Hi,
Can you use the Dr. Color Chip Road Rash Repair Kit or the Paint Chip Repair Kit on cars other than BMW or Mini (specifically a '98 Toyota MR2)?
Regards
The solvent products will only soften the uncured paint. They will not affect the cured original paint.
where can I get the things that used on the deep ones (metal exposed)?
Thanks otto it was good video..bit confused about the clear laquer some cars have,or the finish..does that come with the kit etc.kind regards..ed

how old touch up paint can the blob eliminator remove and can it remove clear coat top up too?

Awesome, on the paint repair! !Good JOB!!
Thanks, Ruben. Give these kits a try. They do a great job!
www.bavauto.com
Hi there, I would like to do this on my BMW Z3 with one of these kits. They come with everything used here?
And do you ship to New Zealand as that's where I'm based. Thanks.
Hi.
I tried the Dr. Colorchip road rush on my car, and it always coming out from the missing parts. I tried to wait longer, to put more and less from the blending solution, and I tried with a card. It never fills even the smallest dots or scratches. Saab 9-3 CV, color code 268. (Metallic silver)
Do you have any idea?
Thanks.
Please see our prior reply on the clear coat application.
So are you saying that we can also use the same solvent to dissolve the excessive clear coat, and wipe it away?
Hi Auto, I liked this video. What prep work needs to be done prior to starting the paint repair process? For example, should the entire car be washed?
At least wash the area being worked on. Dawn dish soap does a good job of removing wax.
Great video! very helpful Thank you! I was too afraid to do it by myself, just saved 200$ for the bumper scratch repair job. Liked and Subscribed
Thanks, Jiajia
I'm wondering if is it possible to use the Quixx Scratch Remover over the same area where Roadrash was once applied (assuming that you´ll get a scratch AFTER doing the job) without removing it. Will the paint be completely cured after 2 weeks or so?

My M3 is an individual color, does Dr. Colorchip have paint for those?
Can I use the first method to repair a 20 cm deep scratch made by screwdriver/key?
My 2008 750li got scratched on both sides by unknown bad guys last year. :(
thank you for making the video.
Have you ever repaired chips on metallic paint like BMW titanium silver (354)?
Jeff Gail I have and all it did was change the color.
Silver is nearly impossible to match with touch up paint, I'v had 2 silver cars and the painted chips stick out a mile. Talking to painters, they say silver is one of the hardest to match which is why it is blended into surrounding panels.

A question:

Thanks very much.
No primer is required. just be sure that you clean out the chips as shown in the video. The color coat alone will be fine.
BavarianAuto thanks ...great video and product.
Thanks for the video good and detailed 👍👍
I got OEM paint from BMW dealership but I notice the colors are not the perfect match, I've been warned beforehand, saying the paints won't match probably because of environmental effects like the sun fading original paint.

Hard to see how effective this really is due to the red paint
We think that this would be OK. We'd recommend just going at it gently at first to see how it works out.
What other fluid/solvent can I use to wipe off the excess paint if I don't have the repair kit. I mean a fluid from the hardware or autoshop. Are there specific parameters i have to watch out for or something?

I didn't see anytime in the video where you used the paint sealant that was part of the Paint Chip Removal Kit.
Woops .... missed showing that step for the video, after the paint curing. We also will allow the full paint cure and apply one of our high quality waxes.
Hey, Bavarian
Will this be only paint or will it look like "new".
What is the SealAct solvent actually made of. Can it be mixed DIY? Is it sold by another company under a diff name?
Don't know .....
Otto is the fucking BOB ROSS of BMW. 🤪
Ca you guys show how to repair paint damage from bird droppings?
How does this work on metallic paints? As the red you demonstrated on is a flat color would it hide any paint work better than a metallic? I have the carbon black and it looks terrible with stone chips on the hood as the white/grey undercoat contrasts with the black so they really stand out.
The kits work great with metallics (with clear coat). We typically do not bother with a second application of the clear coat, after the color work.
Where do i buy the kit? I have an 05 525i?

One more question...While pulling my bumper off I noticed a "Sensor" right in front of the passenger-side wheel well...The wires weren't connected though...what is this sensor..? (Ps: Not the Temp sensor but almost in the same place on the other side of the bumper...
I wonder how these kits handle Metallic Paints, I got two small chips on my 16 silverado in Siren red.
from my experience touch up paint works best for darker metallic color.
Good, informative video. Thank you.
Thanks for the info. Great Video.
Hi! just bought a 04 e60 520i sedan in titangau 2 metallic (titanium grey 2). there are quite a bit of chips on the front bumper plus some scratches made by previous owner. there are also a bit of worn paint on the rear bumper below the trunk. i bought the BMW touch up paint with right color code (a36 titangrau 2 met.) but when i tested it on a pice of aluminum it seems some shades darker than the paint on the car. what should i do?
Try topping with the clear coat to see if this changes the shade to be a better match. Other than this, you may just be seeing the difference between the sprayed paint and the brush-on touch-up.
Do you have a video for paint damage from Egg?
I got my BMW nd it has been repainted before nd idk if they put the same color
Do you guys carry a kit for a Subaru? Just bought a used one and its riddled with chips all over the hood.
We can order kits for any car. We just need the year, model, paint color name and the color code. You can call our advisors at 800-535-2002 with this info, to place an order.
I noticed the "shotgun chips" on my cousin's car.. I was very very curious what caused those chips. Any idea? thanks
just wondering i have a silver m3 1997 and i am curious if you apply a clear coat after applying touch up paint
For chip repair, we typically do not bother with a final clear coat.
Why is that? Does the clearcoat not help at all?
can i use any of these kits for scratches? if not, any recommendations? thanks!
If you have lots of repairs done this way the car ends up looking like it has the measles, depending on the color, of course.
this has been super useful, thank you !
does it help prevent rusting?
what if the little chips have surface rust?
wel this work on key marks?
Where can I find the paint code for 2013 Mini Cooper Hardtop? Looked everywhere but could not fine it
The paint code sticker should be on the passenger side strut tower. Look for a rectangular sticker, about 1" x 4". Either black with white lettering or white with black lettering. As a last resort, call our advisors at 800-535-2002 and we can look it up using the VIN.
thank you, nice video and nice work
What is the difference between the Basic, Standard and Deluxe kit? they doesnt say much on the side? Im sure it the amount of paint but what size
The three kits are as follows:
RRK050 = 1/2-oz paint & 1-oz blending fluid
RRK075 = 1/2-oz paint & 2-oz blending fluid
RRK100 = 1-oz paint & 4-oz blending fluid
where i can get this stuff??
Notice in the beginning, there are 3 chips. Toward the middle, he points between the largest, and says this one already looks great.
This is just due to blasting from road grit .... sand and other small sized grit.
What about the clear coat that has been removed? How to you fix that?
DR chip paint is a mixture of clear coat and car paint.
do they sale all of these products at Bavarian website?
We sure do! Just go to the website and use the menu to go to "detailing & car care", then "Touch-up paint".
