I wonder if Quint was waiting on Harristan because he had already begun his occasional nightly Outlaw runs which we later find out Quint helped with. I would much rather it be that than Quint turning out to be a traitor, lol

As much as I just wanted Tessa and Corrick to be together in this book (and the last one, for that matter) I completely understand why she was so unsure and questioning his motives so much in this book. I think it’s easy to forget or minimize just how terrifying Corrick was as the king’s justice. I’m almost positive that in the first book, Tessa peed her pants when she saw him after she was captured in the palace. For her to have to reconcile that the man she loved is the same man that she has such a deep, consuming fear of is no small thing. Between Karri and Lochlan’s warnings, Rian sewing doubt while being so Weston-esque, and Corrick being distant/closed off to her, it makes complete sense that Tessa would feel the way she did. It was a perfect storm! I love that Corrick realizes that too towards the end of the book. He tells her he should’ve declared their courtship. I think we’re going to get so much development from him in the next book and I can’t wait to see him and Lochlan’s relationship form. They will have to work together to survive and I think that’s beautiful! The two people in the book who you NEVER thought would see eye to eye. Love it!

I agree, but I think I got more depth from your comment than I did from Tessa's actual musings in the book! She mainly focused on fear and only seeing him as Corrick, without really diving into remembering he was Weston which is why I think I wanted more. I hope we get it now that he is Weston again. And I agree I loved the Lachlan and Corrick protection at the end!!! Can't wait to see where that goes.

Honestly same!!! I feet the exact same! I loved how realistic everything was and the way they made up in the end was so worth it. It was beautiful. One song that would capture their entire relationship in this book would be Great War by Taylor Swift and of course, the ‘tragic end’ (from Tessa’s perspective anyway) could be summed up by Bigger Than The Whole Sky by Taylor Swift. It just shook me to my core. I haven’t ever felt relief the way I did when I read the title of the final chapter. I literally hugged the book 😂😂😂😂 and I agree- I am SO ready to see how Corrick and Lochlan survive together

Great review! I think the opposite about Harristan. think now that he is finally out of the palace he can’t be poisoned and will get better. Hoping I’m right 🤞

I finished the 2nd book! A 4.5-5 stars for me!
I was audibly gasping and in shock when u said the predictions on Harristan and Quint. And I kinda agree!
My prediction is that we’ll get another POV in book 3, possibly Lochlan, Allisanser or Rian.

I loved this series so far and i hope we don’t get disappointed on the third book. I wish that Harristan can be an uncle (while still alive)

I thought that the Quint having wine scene alluded to him helping Harristan, because the very next chapter was ‘The Outlaw’ and so it made more sense when it was revealed that the fox was Harristan and Quint was helping, so it was Harristan he was waiting for. At least I hope! I love Quint I don’t want him to be evil. I also agree about Tessa. I’m sorry but she kind of annoyed me in this one. It’s like she had this constant need to see the best in literally everybody but the worst in Corrick and my heart hurt for him. I also hope to God that Harristan doesn’t die in the next book. I guess it wouldn’t be a proper ending because Corrick would be so upset and I don’t think he would want to be king. Ahhh I just don’t want that to happen to Corrick he loves his brother too much :(((
But I also can see and ending with Corrick as king and Tessa as queen but I really don’t want that to happen it would be so sad

I agree! I think it would be so sad but I think that is what is coming. :(

I dont want to suspect Quint, but it could be true because he knows absolutely everything that happens in the palace it would be a truly devastating betrayal and that makes for a good read. but let's say that's not the reason for that scene in his quarters, I thought maybe he was waiting on Thorin, because of the remark that he made to Harristan that he trusted Thorin. Maybe they had a fling. I could be reaching. he could just trust him because he helped in their escape when the palace was attacked.

I like the Thorin theory! It would make sense, because I originally thought it was a thing with Harriston, but Thorin could also work. But I still think I'm going to stick with I don't trust him even though I want to lol

I LOVED THE BOOK. It was one of the best YA fantasies I read so far. However, I feel like that it really is a 50/50 with Harristan. On one hand he can get some great character development as a king and become fair and just like he wanted. He’s also eventually going to find out he was poisoned one way or another and his cough should start receding. If he does die, Corrick would be traumatised even further and I don’t see how the story would go smoothly from Harristan’s death.
Also, it can’t just be me who thinks that Corrick and Lochlan might get tortured at one point. While they are using fake identities, Bella might snitch to her father, Oren Crane, who would obviously use them both as leverage. We also know he’s really cruel and evil and he would get mad he was tricked.
One of the best parts about the book was the brothers relationship. But I remember that people heard of brigantines being sent after the dawn chaser. While the crew fought them off, Oren Crane came right after so they might have seen everyone dying somehow and the ship being destroyed. Harristan and Karri would probably find out if that’s the case. That might play into Character development for them both.
I love Quint so I really hope he isn’t evil although it would be a cool plot twist. I do think he was up waiting for Harristan since he was the outlaw at the time since it was the first pov we got and the timeline suggest that the outlaw appeared before Ostriary came into play.
I’m not mad at the separation trope but I do hope Tessa stops complaining and that she sees what Corrick tried to do. I also hope we get to see more of Rocco and Lochlan.
    The book was overall 4.5⭐️

Hii.. Will you read the ballad of never after?

Hi! Probably not, I don’t typically read the next book in the series if I didn’t like the first one. I don’t think it’s fair to the author for me to give a negative review of a second book if I already wasn’t a fan of the first!

    I honestly LOVED this book so much. It made me laugh, it made me ugly-cry, and then it made me ugly-sob in relief. I would give this book 5 stars because everything from the first book came together. I appreciated the realism of the fights between Corrick and Tessa. I LOVE the bond between Corrick and Harristan. I literally cried when they parted ways. I LOVED the two storylines occurring. I loved the development of Rian and I HATED the way he judged everyone (rightfully so) and jumped the gun. Honestly, I have the same prediction. From the first book, I knew Harristan is going to die- it’s just a matter of when. I know I’m going to sob uncontrollably when it happens. I love Harristan and I just want to give him a big hug. And the PLOT twist!!!! The fact that the entire kingdom was poisoned right around when the parents were killed. It’s almost like whoever did it was setting the brothers up for failure. I honestly don’t want to believe it’s Quint because he also has my heart. He’s such a sweet character. He’s kept so many secrets and he’s very loyal. I think it’s someone else. Someone that’s been mentioned in passing that we haven’t really paid much attention to! If it is Quint I will be so heartbroken ;-;
One thing that I find interesting is that I care more for Corrick than I do for Tessa. And since this book is written in split perspectives, I think it would be so interesting and crazy if Tessa got sick. Because then we would know that she was poisoned. If Tessa and Harristan end up dying in the end, it would be so sad but it would be interesting to see how Corrick would cope :,)

Oh I think he would go dark again if both of them were gone!! Which could be an interesting twist.
