As someone that isn't an FE fan that tried to watch it before and didn't enjoy it, Gen 3 looked genuinely interesting from a car perspective so I decided to give it another go. I watched the season opener and unfortunately all the reasons I didn't enjoy it had remained. The cars are a bit of an improvement over last year, so my issue doesn't lie there. My problem is the tracks and the racing itself. I realize this is due to the current technological limits, but it makes for a boring watching experience for me. The hilariously narrow and short tracks and the more "physical" racing makes it feel like I am watching bumper cars in a lot and not a high stakes race. It removed any weight to the racing, it still just looks miles away from what I expect a top class to be. If it was the FREC equivalent of electric single seater racing I could suspend my belief more to enjoy it, but for a supposed world championship premisr class, it still has miles to go in development. So I decided it was not for me at this moment, maybe Gen 4 will be the one.

The way he capitalized on the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity was thrilling, and I'm happy that he got himself a seat. Not an AT fan, but I'll be rooting for him to have a good season.
tbf his lack of success in f2 indirectly affect his success in lmp2 because he became one of the fastest silver rated drivers, and lmp2 teams need at least one silver/bronze rated driver in their 3 driver lineup. had he become successful enough to become a gold or platinum driver through f2, his competition is wayyy tougher for an lmp2 seat
It was really good to finally see the puzzle pieces fall into place for De Vries last year. Not only his lucky break subbing for Albon at the perfect track to do so, but also the driver carousel happening at the time that could be traced back all the way to Vettel's decision to retire. At last he got the chance he always deserved, and I'm looking forward to seeing what he can do with the Alpha Tauri this year.
this shit aged like milk thats 7 days past its expiration date sitting outside the refrigerator on a scorching summer day in a room with no ventilation
This is a solid video of the story of Nyck de Vries. Even if I can’t stand your cynicism in most of your videos Josh. I first heard of Nyck when I heard that he joined the McLaren academy (hell even from the McLaren Toon video). It’s actually nice to be hearing his name once more in recent years from being Formula 2 and E Champion and competing at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. I will be sure keep a solid eye on him and hope for the best now that he finally made it to Formula 1. 👍
I’ve had a few years of experience within the highest levels of international karting (DKM, WSK, CIK-FIA Cups, etc.) around the 2009-2011 era. Directly competing with many of the guys who have reached F1 and like 80% of the names that came back throughout the video within the top 5 standings throughout De Vries’ career. My story ended quickly since I ran out of money, like many other talented peers I competed against in my time. Unfortunately, money talks in motorsport, so I’ve seen many talented peers like myself unfortunately never get a shot at an actual career in motorsport. Nyck was no exception when it comes to bringing immense amounts of money to the table. That said, Nyck is the ONLY driver, I proudly admit was better than I was. He was litterally the Messi of Karting. Whenever people ask me about my days in racing, they assume my hardest competitor was Max or Leclerc. For 10 years I’ve been saying Nyck de Vries, and of course, nobody knew who he was. So now he better show why I’ve been saying that all those years lol.
My favourite thing about de Vries' Monza performance was his little plaintive, "can someone help me? I can literally not lift my arms anymore," at the finish. A timely reminder that F1 cars are still absolutely brutal. Plus it underlined his performance, he wasn't physically prepared for F1, but he stuck out the race and didn't screw up.
Out qualifying Nicolas Lathifi might not sound like much but seeing Lathifi has some years of experience in F1 and knows the Williams car it makes De Vries out qualifying Lathifi very impressive. And from what I remember it was by a clear margin. Also if I remember correct he was replacing Albon in the last minute too and that alone makes his performance really great. I mean just perform at an acceptable level or taking the car to the finish is hard enough when you jump in a car last minute. I have high hopes for Nyck it will be really interesting to see how he performs. I think it will be interesting which rookie lives up to the hype this year because both De Vries and Piastri has hype and pressure even more than what rookies usually has.
I couldn't help but wonder what was wrong with De Vries in both of his 2017 and 2018 campaigns. Some said it was a misfortune, others said luck or just inconsistency and some reliability issues but if I had to say about one thing, he really wasn't good enough to drive in F1 back then. And yeah, alright, he had been a prodigy throughout his karting championship and skilled enough to fulfill the expectation, but not really mental-wise despite of his age. Leclerc seemed way more mature in 2017 despite being a complete rookie on that season or George, Norris, and Albon who had grown up and became better than before despite these drivers were used to be below De Vries in terms of skill. Sure, he then later proved his worth in 2019 but the audition already was closed and none of these teams were looking for an idol to fill their roster line-up. However, he didn't miss his opportunity after the 2nd time of asking.
I am sooooooo hyped for the upcoming Season, so many new faces on the grid, old faces in different teams, I hope that Nyck can prove himself in the Alphatauri and that the car is not like the one last year
Latifi bought De Vries’ seat and then in his third year in the team lost to De Vries when he had to just jump in. Maybe it’s for the best that De Vries didn’t have to go against Russell (for both of them) but it’s good he’s finally getting his turn. Hopefully that’ll happen for others
The difference between his 2021 and 2022 FE season is not as inexplicable as you make it out to be. FE changed the quali format and inconsistency was no longer rewarded, so consistent guys like Stoffel could build a proper momentum, Nyck wasn't able to do that, so he kinda fall off.
it's hilarious how Oliver Rowland is basically in almost EVERY SINGLE CHAMPIONSHIP DeVries was in at the same time, even in Formula E later they would drive on the same grid xD
Anyone else love to hear Josh narrate their own driving on the road? 🤣 "And he fucked it again, only to still, somehow, continue to believe in himself"
He has bulked up, by quit a bit looking at the photo's. And last time wasn't exactly representative as they couldn't adjust the steering wheel down far enough so it was too high for him, putting extra strain on his arms and shoulders.
Nyck is far from the only racing driver to have a similar problem. As long as he can drive the car quickly the whole event nobody will care if he can get out of it afterwards.
To be fair, he was as last minute a replacement as you could possibly get so he was driving a car not setup for him seat wise (Which I imagine isn't quite easy, compared to the organized sessions he had with multiple teams in Free practice)
He really fumbled the bag at a McLaren seat in 2017ish I think when he said that McLaren wanted him in their car more than Alonso on live Dutch television
I think it is really interesting to See, that i know almost all the people He raced agianst in junior formulas as nearly all of them ended up in f1, wec or formula e
I never wanted him in F1 I thought his performance was good at Monza, but thought it was likely due to a very weak teammate and the car given it's lack of downforce the car suited Monza. I never thought a single race was enough to show he had what it took to be in F1. It was no doubt an impressive drive. But where would Albon have been, we only saw him against a driver who was only in formula 1 because he paid Williams (who at the time who was struggling for money) to drive. So I was not surprised that he beat Latifi at all. That said I do feel sorry for him, it's never good to see a driver get canned like this. I am happy for Daniel though he has put in the work for RB and deserves another shot. And if Nyck improves maybe he deserves another shot too. I'm all for a redemption arc, Albon, Gastly, Hulkenberg, they all deserved a second chance to prove themselves.
