Funny story: The first time I heard this song I was in my car, hungry and stressed, trying to beat my personal record from a client site to the office and have more time to update the paperwork. I listened carefully, pulled over the first gas station I found with a diner, ordered pie and coffee and used my chunky 25 years ago cell phone to call my mom and have a long chat while watching the sunset. Didn't get back to the office that day and changed jobs a few months later. Music can change lives. 🙂🌻❤️
I work night shift. There is nothing like "Dust in the wind" on the stereo when you are alone in the truck at at 3am to remind you just how small and insignificant we really are. Really puts you in your place.
LOL! Everyone who has commented on here is probably my age group. Kansas was one of the best bands of the '70s. Echoing others here: You have to check out Carry On Wayward Son.
Dude, you HAVE to listen to "Carry On My Wayward Son" next!!! It thematically follows "Dust in the Wind" perfectly. You've definitely heard it before, because it is an all-time *banger.* They used it a ton in the show "Supernatural," but it's been everywhere. The multi-harmony at the beginning is amazing, & the ending....!!! The title track "Point of Know Return" is fantastic, as well. Kansas definitely have a distinctive sound, heavy on the masterful instrumentation, complex arrangements, & of course lyrics that actually mean something. "Dust in the Wind" is actually a stripped down departure from that: guitarist Kerry Livgren wrote it as a fingerpicking exercise, hence the gorgeous intro. His wife Vicki heard it, & told him he should write some lyrics for it & record it. (I hope he buys her fabulous gifts with every royalties check.) I'm a Millennial, myself, but I've damn near worn out the Kansas "mixtape" CD my Dad made for me. It got me through college, & I always think of him when I'm making an absolute fool of myself belting along to Wayward Son in my car, or at home hoping my neighbors don't think I'm being murdered. 😅
I know what he means, but I'll just saying he can experience the older music far more easily, and can enjoy it far better than back when these came out. New music for the most part is copy, paste, gag
Kansas was just as great in their live performances as in the studio. I saw them around 1979-1980. I'm so glad I got to see them. Great musicians, songwriters and singers.
Dust in the Wind was released just a few months after my uncle was murdered. It used to make me sad, now it just makes me think of him and I love the song.
The song writer is Kerry Livgren, the blond haired guitarist. Kerry was at home practicing his finger picking skills when his wife told him that he needed to turn the "exercise" into a song. The song is completely different from anything that Kansas had ever recorded. Kerry presented the song to the band and they were stunned into silence. The song became one of the bands greatest hits.
Tesla "Love Song" Kansas "Carry on My Wayward Son" Jackson Brown "The Pretender" So many great songs and artists, but these are a few of my favorites to get started...
I couldn't bear to listen to this song for a couple of decades after my Dad died. He was the best - both mother & father to us. Thanks for this reaction. More people need to hear it, nice to see that people in your generation has the capacity to "feel" this song
What seemed to happen is just what you said. Music has been high jacked by the industry since the early 80's. Thank God that we now have a new fountain with Ren ! Thank you for playing the old but greats. These mean more now than they did when they first came out. Age changes prospective. ❤
I liked this song as a kid, ling before watching this series, and was one of the few songs i learned to finger-pick. But now ot will never not remind me of episode 2x04.
"Carry On My Wayward Son"!!!! It was amazing when it was first released and then became huge again with the success of the show Supernatural. My now 16 year old daughter fell in love with the song because of Supernatural back when she was 10 and dove into all of Kansas's work and is a huge Kansas fan now because of this song.
A dude in my small hometown in Kentucky, ended getting off the rails - but was one of those savants that could just hear something and play it. He played with Kansas multiple times and multiple instruments- Sadly got hooked on cheap man’s meth , buying everything and supermarkets and you know the rest. Kansas goes hard though. Check out South Park - stans dad doing carry on my wayward son. On your free time. You will laugh your azz off.
A modern day rock band that has old style talent is the Japanese band, Band-Maid, try "Influencer", and if you want lyrics they have CC on most of their songs, but really the talent will blow you away.
I remember listening to this while driving down a rural road in the middle Kansas, which the wind blowing 30 mph, kicking up dust, tumbleweeds rolling across the road.
More reaction suggestions would be any of the “bad lip reading” music videos(or regular content)such as “my stick”, “Carl poppa”, “bushes of love”,and that seagull one that I can’t think of.
Having being born in the 60s and having my childhood and teens in the 70s, I can tell you the Beatles brought an interest on oriental philosophy (they even included the mantra "jay Guru Dev - Omm -" in their song Across the Universe) with their visits to India and raised an interest in transcendental ideas and concepts. People became interested in listening to more than "I like big butts". I'm not saying they were single responsible for that, but they were among the bands that didn't just write songs about romantic love. Listen "The fool on the hill", "Across the Universe", "Because", "Yesterday", Lennon's "Imagine" or George's "when my guitar gently weeps". I guess I was lucky in my teens I grew up with songs like those, also The sound of silence and many more. We had plenty of romantic songs, but also songs that made us think about life and the meaning of things. Then, I don't know what happened, suddenly we had disco!
My Dad had a vinyl of a band I had never heard of when I was a teenager so out of curiosity I listened and was amazed! Please check out Three Dog Night s - One. Another I think you would really enjoy is America s - A Horse With No Name.
The 70s & 80s was the best time for music!!! Here's a few suggestions. "Baby Come Back" Player, "Nights in White Satin" the long version, Moody Blues, "Send Me An Angel" Scorpions, "Time In A Bottle" Jim Croce, "Send Her My Love" Journey, "Lady" Styx, "Lady" Kenny Rogers, "I Will Always Love You" Dolly Parton, "Hell Is For Children, Promises In The Dark" Pat Benatar, "Turn The Page" Bob Seger just to suggest a few. I could list over 100+ songs, but you can find more once you get started. Have fun!!!!😊😊😊😊
Supposedly, while recording this album, they didn’t think they had THE song for the album. That night, the lead guitarist went home and wrote this song. Came back in and pitched it to the band and they agreed to do it. After recording it, they knew they had THE song for the album. Little did they know how iconic this song would become.
Back when they were touring this album for some reason Kansas NEVER played in Nebraska. I lived there so a buddy and I had to go to Red Rocks, CO (God's Cathedral). Very well worth the trip and a nice ride on a couple of Harleys with our girls. 600 miles round trip with roughly $1.00 gas I've seen them since then with the new band members in Reno (former Harrah's outdoor venue) Still killin' it. I still have this LP./Album. Carry on Wayward Sun. Point of Know Return. "All your money won't another minute buy".
I absolutely want more of this, I love watching people who approach the music with an open mind and respect. I agree with other commentators, “Carry on my Wayward Son” is terrific. The full Queen set from Live Aid is one of the most amazing live performances I’ve ever seen. Also, I don’t really see anyone doing Chris DeBurg. “Spanish Train” in particular is my favourite. Credence Clearwater Revival (or CCR) are terrific, with songs like “Bad Moon Rising”, “Suzie Q”, “Down on the Corner”, and many others So many more, really, but I don’t want to overwhelm you with my requests. Enjoy!
Taking every chance to come see you, lad. Great choice here. They have a fabulous tune called "Hold On". Not one of the radio hits, but man, is it good.
This song makes me miss one of my best friends during my teen years. She had an amazing voice and was the lead singer in a Heart cover band in the late 80s. She sounded just like Ann Wilson (Cliffbeats did a reaction last Wednesday, the Led Zeppelin Kennedy Centre Honors). ❤😢 #fuckaddiction #ripkarasmith
Since you asked for suggestions: Kansas - "Miracles Out of Nowhere" Boston - "Foreplay/Long Time" David Gilmour - "High Hopes" (live in Gdansk) Al Stewart - "Year of the Cat"
I think a large part of the 'soul' that's missing from most modern music is the polished skill that comes from musicians who have practiced their craft for thousands of hours, discovering how to get the most beautiful sounds from their instruments and voices. Real instruments have harmonic complexities to their sound that synthesized instruments simply cannot match, and those complexities can change according to the way they're played, or even the way they're held.
Love what you do brother! I can appreciate your opinion and your honesty on these reactions! Im 58 and fortunately I grew up in the 70’s and 80’s best 2 decades of rock music especially the 90’s! You missed a great great time! And as you see great great music! I know you did the Moscow Sandman by Metallica, but please check out the same concert”fade to black” in my opinion, the best life performance of that song Metallica ever did
I feel you 100% on being a lifelong hip hop head who also just loves music of all genres. I love discovering new artists (or just new to me), there's nothing better, imo. Good music is good music, regardless of genre, era, etc.
I must say if u r born with music in ur soul, n I mean deep in ur soul, then u will appreciate all the great ones that have graced us all with so much power over the years! I my friend do believe that you Cliff have that deep in ur soul my friend!!! Love watching n going back with u in time!!!🥰As Always, Wishing Peace’ Light’ Love’ Health & Happiness To All Always!!!🙏🏼🥰🙏🏼💞
Kerry Livgren wrote this using a finger picking exercise. It's the basis of the entire tune. It's mesmerizing, imho. As a native Kansan, I love this band. Before this complete interation of the band, I used to see them live in every dive off I-70, lol. Thank you!

So ... Queen actually have produced a stage musical that's still touring, I think, called We Will Rock You, which originally debuted in the mid-late '00s, and it is a sci-fi musical about the future of music, based, of course, on the music of Queen, and it actually makes exactly the point you're making about the loss of originality in rock music. You might want to check it out if it's ever showing in your area.
Carry On Wayward Son is one of the best rock songs ever written. Two more legendary late 70s/early 80s bands you should check out are Journey and Boston.
I snagged their album when it was first released. Killer album. Wish I still had it. Nothing else feels like this song. Nothing else matches this era. We change and music changes.
I've always said I must have been a flower child in a former life (born in '78)😆🤣. This is my favorite song with Point Of Know Return running up close behind it. Carry On Wayward Son is going to be requested a lot..mostly by those of us that are part of the Supernatural Fandom, it's a great song, but there are definitely more songs on the list (as a SPNFamily member) that aren't as well known but awesome, just my feeling on the music.
Sending much love, my brother. See you soon
I was like… “who is reddawg”. Duh!🤣
I’ll see you soon brother!
"Carry on My Wayward Son" by Kansas is a must-watch.
I second that !!!
Then check out the VoicePlay cover
Came to look for this!
Yeah my dad listened to this...carry on my wayward son is more iconic...plus I was a huge "supernatural" fan in the day
@@matchu.j me too
Check on (Carry On) Wayward Son. You'll appreciate that one as well. Great reaction.

Love this!!!
One of the greatest songs in rock, sung by one of the very best voices ever!
I work night shift. There is nothing like "Dust in the wind" on the stereo when you are alone in the truck at at 3am to remind you just how small and insignificant we really are. Really puts you in your place.
😭
LOL! Everyone who has commented on here is probably my age group. Kansas was one of the best bands of the '70s. Echoing others here: You have to check out Carry On Wayward Son.
The violinist does have great hair
Dude, you HAVE to listen to "Carry On My Wayward Son" next!!! It thematically follows "Dust in the Wind" perfectly. You grew up in the right era to introduce this music to people who are ready to appreciate it now. The whole Point of Know Return album is epic.
You are in the right era. In this time you can hear music from every previous time of music
Yeah nah I know what Cliff means
I’m with Cliff now most music is mixed and baked in a corporate office it’s crud set to a beat not music.
I know what he means, but I'll just saying he can experience the older music far more easily, and can enjoy it far better than back when these came out. New music for the most part is copy, paste, gag
I love this song when I was younger, I couldn’t wait to play the violin part to this!!❤❤❤
This is my favorite Kansas tune. Classic. If all we are is dust in the wind, we might as well be kind to each other, cuz there is nothing otherwise.
Yes very amazing hair and beard.
The message behind these lyrics are very powerful and mean more than one would think. Love this song love their song Carry on wayward son too.
Carry On is one of my favorite songs.
@@MourningMasterpiece
Indeed, mine too, along with this one.
Kansas was just as great in their live performances as in the studio. I saw them around 1979-1980. I'm so glad I got to see them. Great musicians, songwriters and singers.
vocally one of the best concerts I saw in high school, as with you, 1978 or 79
A lot of people are already recommending "Carry on My Wayward Son" which is great, but I also think you'll enjoy "He Knew" - one of my fav's....
Second this. Great song! I heard in on Classic Rewind on SiriusXM the other day
Third this!!!!😊
So, so many amazing songs from Kansas. I also recommend "Song for America" and "Hold On."
Dust in the Wind was released just a few months after my uncle was murdered. It used to make me sad, now it just makes me think of him and I love the song.

More Kansas please!!!
Ive always liked this song
A personal Kansas favorite of mine is Portrait of a Man (He Knew)
Tesla "Love Song"
Kansas "Carry on My Wayward Son"
Jackson Brown "The Pretender"
So many great songs and artists, but these are a few of my favorites to get started...
I couldn't bear to listen to this song for a couple of decades after my Dad died. He was the best - both mother & father to us. Thanks for this reaction. More people need to hear it, nice to see that people in your generation has the capacity to "feel" this song
Been one of my favs for years... 🌺
One of my best friends had this played at her wake. It was her favorite song. Makes me very sentimental hearing it! Good song!❤️
You Cliff like me are an old soul.
I'm the last generation raised with this phenomenal music.
What seemed to happen is just what you said. Music has been high jacked by the industry since the early 80's. Thank God that we now have a new fountain with Ren ! Thank you for playing the old but greats. These mean more now than they did when they first came out. Age changes prospective. ❤
"Carry on My Wayward Son" by Kansas is a MUST WATCH. Also, "Play the Game Tonight" is a classic early 80's song by Kansas.
Roundabout by Yes, Bad Company by Bad Company, Don't Stop Believin' by Journey, Land of Illusion by Genesis.
One of the few recurring songs from Highlander that wasn't Queen. Never fails to make me cry.
I liked this song as a kid, ling before watching this series, and was one of the few songs i learned to finger-pick.
But now ot will never not remind me of episode 2x04.
Miracles Out of Nowhere off their Leftoverture album. Steve Walsh has an incredible voice.
Dude!…I suggested this out a long while ago because it’s just an outstanding song w so much meaning!!!🙏🏼🥰🙏🏼💞
I echo several other comments-Kansas: Carry on My Wayward Son is unbelievably great!!

This was the choice of funerary music one of my best friends had played at his funeral. RIP Greg (1974-97)...
Have loved this song all my life.
Kerry Livgren is a genius (imho) and i've been a fan for decades. Kansas & Proto-Kaw are favorite bands for... well, decades too.
Damn, I was ten years old when this came out.
Me too...we were so lucky to grow up with such great music!!
One of my favorite Kansas tracks is called Song for America. But you have to do the full version, not the shortened radio edit.
A modern day rock band that has old style talent is the Japanese band, Band-Maid, try "Influencer", and if you want lyrics they have CC on most of their songs, but really the talent will blow you away.
"Carry On My Wayward Son" is their greatest flagship song for upbeat rock. HUGELY popular and such a great sound.
I so agree with your assessment. Enjoy each moment while you can.
They made me memorize this song in Sociology class in high school.
(Great song to use as a lullaby.)
I remember listening to this while driving down a rural road in the middle Kansas, which the wind blowing 30 mph, kicking up dust, tumbleweeds rolling across the road.
This song has special memories for me of my aunt who passed away a long time ago, way too young. Love this song forever.

The whole leftoverature album is a must listen
I remember my parents listen this song... Thats why I know It... I love many oldies❤
Every day on the radio, this was all we had, and all we needed.
I made it through college dorm life listening to the 70’s. And yes, everyone had great hair back then!

P.S. Double bonus points for calling out the beauty that was the late Robbie Steinhart. He looked like that till the end of his days. RIP Steinhart.
