Louise, this video couldn't have come at a better time. I've been a doctor for 20 years and last month finally admitted to myself that I'm not half and want a creative career. It's terrifying at the age of 45 to consider giving up everything and starting again but also exciting. Your story gives me hope so thank you.

Why not indeed

I used to be a pharmacist . I retired 5 years ago , moved in a small town where my husband can work from home . I’m 55 years old and it’s the first time that I feel that I can do what I truly love: paint, taking care of my cats and chickens and work in my garden. And I really love to watch you paint. Most of the time we don’t love the sound of our voice but I have to say that I find the sound of your voice very relaxing and it helps me focussing on my painting when I follow your Skillshare’s class. never too late even if you have to wait until you retire. I got sick and retired at 50, was lucky enough to get a disability pension and then my life actually really began. Did I have lots of money? NO! Did I have a mortgage? Yes! I lived in a small country town in Western Australia, I hated it. It took us 6 years to sell our house.. because if I didn't like it why would anyone else want to live there??? Then we did sell our house..no mortgage. Yey!! We bought a nice 2nd hand car - which we couldn't afford before we sold. Then moved to a lovely town where we couldn't afford to buy but did get a rental which takes 1 whole pension...but I live where I cant afford and we live simply and I paint, I read and paint some more.. I don't even have my beloved garden any more (I have lots of pots) and we cant have pets but I can paint. Im now 70 and life has begun..Never say never!! Its not necessarily about everything you have its about friends, family, each other and what you can do right now. Nobody will thank you when you are dead for leaving them a half paid for house in an area they dont want to live in. I think kids today make more than we ever did and really its up to them to make their own lives and their own mistakes, YOU have to live yours. Good luck,

74 here, and retired from medicine a few month before Covid hit. Although I am not interested in a new career per se, after the exacting work of diagnostic skin pathology, in reality the study of cellular structure and function, with my free time, I re-discovered a lost creative drive within me; my love of colors led me into making art quilts and learning watercolor painting. I already knew how to sew, and quilting (not the typical patchwork/ geometric type) but collage, applique, paper piecing "art quilts" using batik fabrics came to me almost too easily. I wanted something more challenging, and I found it in one of your videos.
I am now consumed with learning this very difficult beautiful art form. Of course, I hope to eventually figure out a way of incorporating watercolor painting into one of my quilts. I thank you so much for introducing me to this medium. I forget time when I am painting. And I love your grace, your humble teaching style, all of your art, and your distinctive lovely voice too! When I hear you at the start of a video, I smile, relax, and know I will enjoy the next 20-30 minutes of whatever you do or say.

I am 42 years old and I think that I now have the opportunity to get to my dream job, although there is not enough time with three children. Thanks for your lessons. I never thought that watercolor would excite me so much; it always seemed to me something unattainable. Previously, I was interested in interior design, painted toys with gouache, and studied graphic design. At school everyone thought that I would go to study as an artist, but I went to study as an economist. I saw your lessons on TH-cam. Drawing pictures with my hands is exactly what I need. I hope that everything will work out for me.

Oh no way, I have that book you co-authored, had no idea! Wow! This video is really inspiring… I’m 32 and absolutely miserable with my retail job (the people I work with are nice but the actual job is so repetitive and mundane and a lot of customers treat me like I’m something on the bottom of their shoe even though I do my best to be kind and polite and never pressure them to buy anything). I have a second job too in the medical field which I love but my heart has always been drawn to art. I think this was my sign to finally start my art business on the side and eventually quit retail.

Hi Louise - thank you for sharing your story. We started our career change at the age of 40! We worked hard to shed the shackles of the 9-5 ( more like 8 - 7 in reality! ) The goal was the same as yours. To enjoy a creative life. 23 years on and we are still enjoying the journey. Still learning, teaching and painting. Have a great week 😃😃😃😃

Dear Louise, I love your work, and your voice is so calm and soothing. This video represents me from start to end. I've been a teacher for 38 years and finally decided to quit my job last month and use the free time to learn more and pratice painting watercolor. It's one of the best decisions I've ever made in my life. Since then I've been invited to illustrate a poem book and a children's book. I'm so excited about that. That's what I always wanted to do ❤

When you look at the lives of all the greatest artists, even from centuries ago, they all had one thing in common - they all struggled for years to make a living with their art. Success is hard fought, and the praise more highly valued when blood, sweat and tears have been shed in it's pursuit.
I somehow believe that in the future, your paintings will hang alongside those of Van Gogh, Matise, Turner, Da Vinci and Monet in museums all around the world, and even if like other artist, it is not within your lifetime, your legacy of beautiful, timeless art, will live on.

I also dropped everything for an art business. And I find it funny how you're a teacher who switched to art. Most of our friends and peers care not for our success. And it's funny because all I constantly hear are people say "of course you're not making money in your art. You should start teaching". I'm happy with what I do. And I don't care what people say. They're not walking in my shoes. Congrats on your work! Keep going and don't stop! Because we certainly don't hear our friends say this to us enough. By the way, I love your voice! It soothes me while I paint.

I'm not an artist. I'm not a stockbroker. I can't paint. I can't play an instrument, I can't sing, I don't speak languages. But I like what is beautiful and what is good! I like making friends, getting to know other cultures, other people, talking, or just sitting quietly and thinking about the beautiful things in the world. Unfortunately, I'm only here visually, but I read doctors' comments with the help of Google. Dreams are meant to be realized, in art, in a beautiful sound, in a beautiful color, in a beautiful form. What makes us rich is not what we have, if not what we can be happy about. I'm happy with what I saw, what I read, I'm happy that I was here. Thank you very much ! Greetings from Hungary, Paul. ✨️🕊 🙂👋🌷

Louise I am so happy you took the path you did and we are able to watch you here as you share your skills & experiences with us. I sit here in my little cottage here in West Australia, sharing the galahs, Kookaburras, Kangaroos, wildlife & creatures that you have there. I dont have your skills in speaking or teaching, I dont have your skills in watercolour techniques and probably never will, but you let me put those photos of the birds & creatures down onto paper with better confidence than I had 3 years ago, and thats because your videos have given me so much. I hope you appreciate just how much you have helped us out here. Im retired & didn’t start back into watercolour until I ended my professional career, I am happy to spend my spare hours knowing how to paint the feathers of a galah better or one of the roses my husband grows for me. Now if I was younger….well, that might be another story. I am so grateful you listened to Dom as I am sure many of us here are.
