    I'm 47 and an artist. I have sold a lot of art online, done private art classes, and I still don't believe I can do it full time. Finally, my husband said, "Get done and pursue art full time". He believes in me more than I believe in myself. I tend to overthink what I'm doing. I work in a school so I'm not getting done until may because I feel bad for those kids. It's so hard to find people to work in schools but I'm excited to do what I like.

      This gives me so much hope! I’m 35, about to turn 36, and have been struggling with burnout and depression. My husband told me he supports my decision to quit my well paying job to try and do the art thing. I’m very fortunate to have such an understanding spouse. Good luck to you!!

      If you really enjoy your job, you shouldnt quit. Being an artist can be lonely and draining - speaking from experience. As gratifying as 🎨 can be, its not everything. Good luck with whatever you decide! Wishing you the 👌

    I'm a hyper-realistic pencil artist, I started my art journey at 20 now I'm 27. As a artist with no capital I took a job to help me take care of my self, promote and buy most art materials that I wanted. Though It actually helped but it was also taking much from me Which is my time so I decided I had to quit. But this was a problem; whatelse do I do ? How do I take care of my responsibilities and the things I need?? This are the questions constantly running through my mind. life is too short. It was never an easy decision.

      @kim taylor right now I'm a full time artist and I have my own website 1:43 . Knowing it isn't gonna be so smooth for me at first so before I left my job I started sav*Ng and planning on Invsting. Making about $2k a week from my invstment portfolio I'm sure I'm good to go.

      @kim taylor There are many investment alternatives available like real estate, exchange-traded funds (ETFs), stocks and cryptocurrency; but my advice is to hire an expert to guide to through a profitable one.

      The type of life I want to live is just a simple life. Sit at home and make art with no trouble. I'm single with no one helping to support my project unless i dust my butt and get on my feet to do it myself but I'm very grateful i'd came across this comment.

      @@moviusmakes I am also on a similar path.
      An artist’s life is hard, primarily because there is no structure to it like your typical 9-to-5. No definite “promotion” or career progression. While I know that there is some truth on the “starving artist” cliche, I also know that there are plenty of artists that are succeeding, prospering, and living comfortable lives.
      One of the biggest things I’ve seen that distinguishes a successful artist is not talent, not even technical skills, but rather their entrepreneurial spirit. Every successful artist I know has figured out their own creative way of monetizing their art. That’s their entrepreneurial spirit in action. That’s also why most artists have multiple income streams.
      Although the artist career is less structured than the traditional corporate career, compared to climbing the corporate job ladder, the earning potential of an entrepreneurial artist is practically limitless. Thankfully, creativity and entrepreneurship go hand-in-hand. As artists, we already have an endless supply of creativity within us, we just have to learn to wield it in business, not just canvas and paint.
      I wish you all the best in your art journey! I’m rooting for your good success! 😊

      @@moviusmakes It certainly resonated with me. I was a sole carer for a disabled parent for thirty years. I am now sixty and only just starting, albeit hesitantly, to try and get back to what I was programmed to do. Exhaustion isn't a good start, but my mind still thrives on imagery and my need to create imagery.

    Yep, definitely know how it feels to put all your energy in a job that doesn’t give a damn about you and having nothing left over to draw. I recentlytook a break from instagram to focus on some courses and plan out my drawings more (usually I just posted stuff whenever I had the motivation to draw which obviously made my posts extremely inconsistent, resulting in barely any growth). I do feel like this is the year where I’m finally going to set up my art business for real, while still doing my day job because sadly, I don’t make enough money to just quit. So it’s gonna be tough but I feel confident about it. I know I have the skills and I had a couple commissions last year so it’s time to up the ante and focus on my dreams becoming a reality. Great video, you got yourself a new subscriber!

    It's very inspiring to see someone without an enormous following still being able to be a full time artist. You know, hearing someone with 6 or 7 digit following is like "Yeah, I get it, you're famous. Obviously you make a living out of your art". But it feels refreshing to know that it isn't necessarily... necessary.

    I had to laugh when I saw your title, because I have not long ago quit my job
    as an artist!
    Ive been lucky enough to make a living as an artist since leaving art college and now at 63 it became time for a change.
    Well not entirely my own decision, I decided to devote full time to caring for my dying mum.
    The most surprising thing was that when I announced that I was no longer an artist to family, friends and colleagues it felt like a great weight had been taken off of my shoulders.
    Now that there is no longer any pressure to perform, as an artist, I am once again really enjoying my creativity (with no pressure).

    so inspiring! i started an etsy shop too but since I'm currently in school I can't fulfill orders so I had to shut it down temporarily. I also discovered that driving an hour and a half to and then from school, and the school environment (which sucked) was burning me out and I needed a change. I'm gonna continue online classes next semester but dont know if I'll work on getting a degree or just learning for my self and help build a portfolio. Being an artist is tough but when you do well and people appreciate your work it is the most fulfilling thing in the world! Life is one big journey and all you can do is what you feel is best for your mental health and goals!

    Secondly, i would say that skill comes with time and experimenting with different media and subjects.

Thanks

    • @mimaishawesome
      @mimaishawesome ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Hiya! I do actually :) I can completely relate with the day job thing and not being able to quit it.
      Is your job creative at all? If not, could you look for some job opportunities as an artist/illustrator/designer? If u have a creative job, use the hell out of that to upskill yourself, treat it as time you’re paid for to learn stuff.
      You probably can’t create fun art while working full time, but could you find an hour a week to work on digital products you could sell to earn some passive income? If it takes you half a year or a year it’s still worth it, as that time passes anyway.
      I work full time as a 2d and UI artist and I freelance as a picture book illustrator on a side. I just treat the project time as “crunch” time and I know it will pass, same with working on my portfolio or passion projects. I know this is so that I can move to full time freelance. The last advice and something I currently follow as well is trying to save as much money as possible, so that I can eventually quit my job. I do want to have about 6 months worth of pay in my savings just in case I struggle to find work, some people do that same thing with 3 months worth of pay. The last words of encouragement I can offer is when I do quit and things don’t quite turn out as I want them to, I can always just find another day job.
      Hope this helps!

    • @Sammy_47
      @Sammy_47 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mimaishawesome Unfortunately, I don't work at an art related job; I work EMS billing for a company who cares more about numbers than their employees....it's stressful, but it's all I can do for now because it allows me to work from home. I used to tolerate working there, but not anymore.
      Since I can't change my circumstances, I'm trying to deal with it; I'm using my spare time to work on my stories. It's still difficult because with home life responsibilities and work I'm tired and want to rest; there aren't enough hours in the day.

    • @mimaishawesome
      @mimaishawesome ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@Sammy_47 yeh, I understand this can be tough. I was in the same situation 5 years ago and it was difficult for me to change the industry. Could you possibly set 1 hour a week to work on your portfolio, so that in a few months you could start looking for art related jobs? This is what I did, I have no art or design education, I’m self taught and even though it took me a while, I found a job in games industry. I work on my portfolio every weekend and found my first role that was actually a paid internship. It only paid enough for me to get by but it helped me get my foot in the door. After half a year I found full time position as a graphic designer.
      The good thing is that these days most art and design jobs are remote! From 2020 I worked for 3 different companies from home, the current one being a hybrid role. I have faith in you, I’m sure you can get through it and achieve your goals ❤

    • @Sammy_47
      @Sammy_47 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@mimaishawesome I've always loved writing stories and drawing; it was only recently...maybe 5/6 years ago that I decided to combine the 2 and make comics. Over time, I just worked and worked barely keeping head above water with the wages I was making.
      Doing my stories and creating characters is something I could relax and escape to; it just made me further realize that I don't want to work for anyone period. I'm at a stage now where trying to find another job is something I do not want to do; this is why I'm trying to deal with my current situation. Where I live there aren't that many art related jobs...even if it's remote; plus, even if there were my skill level is not what they want.
      I'm not ragging on those who are able to quit their 9-5 to do their art fulltime; I think I just wanted to express my feelings about things due to personal reasons. I feel stuck and don't know how to get out or at least remove myself even if it's just for a little while.
      I want to connect to other art people.

    I can definitely relate heavily to this! I just had to comment! I currently work as a full-time manager in retail. It takes up a lot of my time. So on the days that I work, I do all of my adulting(cleaning, food prep, pay bills, check email,etc.) I'm definitely exhausted by the end of the day. But on my off days(like today) I draw for my life lol. Was listening to your video while drawing. I'm greatful to be in a job that I don't hate and decent co-workers but...not passionate about it and have my moments of depression. I have to work to keep a roof over my head and pay bills. Luckily, I have accumulated vacation time to focus on my art! Thanks for the video! Cool art 😎

Your mushroom painting is so sweet. Congratulations on all your success so far and being brave enough to go for it! I'm sure you're just at the beginning of a very successful and rewarding career. I've always enjoyed the journey of an artist 's journey on YT and I'm lowkey surprised that your video got recommended to me bc i usually get videos of artists w 30k+ subscribers (you must be doing something right on the algorithm :D). Regardless of the numbers, I love this video quality already! Can't wait to see your growth on TH-cam in the coming years~
    I stopped working to pursue my online business as well. I think having a partner is very encouraging and I'm glad you have your husband. Your early dilemma about quitting work is super relatable. I hope you'll have a video to share to people who are going through that dilemma, I think it'll be great and encouraging content too (just a suggestion ofcourse, no pressure ^^)

    Oh, good luck and congratulations! :) It is also my dream, I am working hard on it and sadly I can say that it is not that easy for everyone. I love making art, I I create mostly illustrations (used on posters and tote bags) and stickers. I had my Etsy shop and I failed. I was making reels, have constant contact in the stories on IG with my great followers but when I reached that point, I couldn't get through it. I had to make some decisions and closed my shop. I created my YT channel. Now I try to figure out how to make my dream come true. I really hope I'll manage to make it true someday. But it's really HARD.

    I am happy for you that you are able to achieve your artistic dreams. I too, would rather spend my time pursuing the creative arts than working in the office, however, single women or women whose husbands struggle financially do not have that option. I will continue to work my jobs and find opportunity for the arts where I can.
