    It seemed like Magnus had everything under control in the rapid games. Sergey could never get the initiative and never seriously threatened. The ability to calculate that checkmate under this pressure was fantastic.

    Hi Mato, I see you only made a video about games 3 and 4 of the tie break, which were both won by Carlsen, while games 1 and 2 both were draws. But game 2 was perhaps the most epic game of the championship! Carlsen had a totally winning position, with more than 10 minutes on the clock, while Karjakin had a totally lost position with less than a minute on the clock. Everyone thought it was game over. But somehow Karjakin managed to pull out an epic draw. Everyone, including Carlsen, were stunned by this miracle. Kudos for Karjakin for his extraordinary defensive skills, but kudos for Carlson for keeping his cool, and remaining the world champion with an epic win in the final game of the tie break.

      TAL move is when you move a knight to a square that is attacked by enemy pawn.

  • @Trias805
    @Trias805 8 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    I wonder if Carlsen calculated the mate in 8. Because it's not so easy to force a mate if black blocks with the bishop instead of moving the king.

    • @larryboy5182
      @larryboy5182 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably didn't calculate it all out (esp in a blitz game) but I'm sure he saw It still becomes a forced mate quite quickly after 1. Rxf8+ Kxf8 2. Rxf7+ Ke8 3. Rf8+ ...

    • @izzya8132
      @izzya8132 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Although there are more moves, the Bf8 variation is very clearly mate and a player of Magnus's caliber hardly needs to calculate it. It is a very common mating sequence that he's intimately familiar with. That's why Karjakin moved his king in like 1 second without thought, because it is obvious that blocking with the bishop is mate, there is only one possible move that is maybe not mate.
      The mate that did happen is a much less common pattern that is very difficult to see under the conditions in the blitz game, so it's incredible that Magnus did it, under the stress of a mate-in-one.
      (by the way, there is no way Magnus would play a move like Rc8 without being 100% sure that it's mate)

  • @windowslogo3577
    @windowslogo3577 8 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Wow, I followed the match closely, but I didn't know that. Well to be world champion is an awesome birthday present. And with this game he also had a present for all the chessfans.
      Too bad I was rooting for Karjakin. I kinda feel sorry for him.
      But Magnus deserved the win

    • @cameront3768

      Josephus Mutzenbacher I was rooting for Magnus Carlsen, but I like how humble and likable and a class act Karjakin is which made me feel sad for him. However, he made a nice payday coming in second at $400,000.

    6:30 is Queen to G3 bad? I know that what Carlsen did was the best choice, but I would have moved my Queen to G3. Is that bad? You defend everything and keep playing, right?

    In a desperate must-win situation like this game, I think it would be an interesting choice by Karjakin to sacrifice the knight and to go for a king hunt: at 1:03 Nxe4, fxe4, Qh4...

    • @Trias805

      Sacrifice a knight when none of his pieces are developed? There is no chance it would work.

      If the suggested knight sacrifice in the sixth move of a well-known and thoroughly analyzed opening were sound, it would have been mentioned in the openings books, it would be known to the two contestants, and Carlsen would not have played the moves leading to this position.

    • @tomychalea

    • @izzya8132
      @izzya8132 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The position you are referencing is a very well-studied position, one move away from being the Najdorf Sicilian which is literally one of the most studied openings (if not the actual single most studied opening)
      If there was any way to create a winning attack from that position, people would know about it. These early moves in the Sicilian have been so deeply studied, and both Magnus and Karjakin were working entirely from their books at this point. The actual "game" doesn't start until later, when the positions deviate from the known lines.

    it's so stupid to use rapid chess tie breaker for a classical chess championship...i admit rapid chess is more exciting but its for a different title.
    if the score was a draw, then magnus should retain the title until someone beats him. i was actually surprised that sergey lost considering he is the current blitz champion.

      I'm rated 240 but maybe I can explain. Black can only make two moves. Both result in mate in one for white.
      if gxh6 then Rxf7#
      if Kxh6 then Rh8#

      You're right of course, TJ, but I think he was just putting us on.

    It must be understood, of course, that Carlsen didn't just find the killing Qh6+ out of the blue. After Rook c1, at the latest, he had spotted the possibility of this truly spectacular finish. Karjakin is an extremely boring player and I'm very happy that his "homo sovjeticus" style didn't meet with lasting success.

      The Soviet-Union did not exist at the time of the ancient Romans, so i think the "correct" spelling in Latin might still be open for debate!
