Nikon have employed their CRC ( Close Range Correction ) system in their Macro lenses for years to the same effect. The Nikon CRC works on a cam coupled to the focusing helicoil, so the correction is ' automatic '.
also stu, these fle (floating lens elements) are common for mamiya rb's and hasselblad v system 40 and 50 mm lenses, used to improve the bokeh at any distance, set focus, then replicate this reading on the lens fle control, pin sharp focus at chosen distance.
