Saoul Mamby was born on June 4, 1947 in Bronx, New York. His mother converted to Judaism when Mamby was four years old and Saoul spent much of his childhood in shul. Mamby later said of his youth, "I would be walking down the street and the kids would pull my yarmulke off my head or grab at my tallis bag." He was bullied daily, as a result, Mamby got into dozens of fights as a youngster. He took up the sport of boxing at the age of 16. Within a couple of years, he found some success in the amateurs and, by 1968, he was shipped off (drafted) to Vietnam. "I was in 'Nam for one year, six days, and four hours. Did I see combat? Yeah, enough. And boxing is easier." "Putting guys in body bags in Vietnam, knowing that all their dreams had died with them; I vowed that, if I got out of there alive, I was going to do what I wanted to do with my life. Boxing makes me feel happy and complete, so I’m boxing. I risked my life in Vietnam and I can do what I want with it now." Mamby turned professional shortly after returning home. At the end of his 1982 interview with KO, Mmby was asked to write his own epitaph. “Saoul Mamby: The Last of a Dying Breed,” he replied. And now, a member of that breed has died. Mamby is definitely one of the most under appreciated champions from the 80s. The fight that immediately comes to mind for me is his title defense against De Jesus. Granted, De Jesus might’ve been passed his best, but Mamby put on a clinic in that fight and wore De Jesus down in a very impressive display. While the footage doesn’t seem to exist, he apparently fought tooth and nail against a prime Duran as well which is no small feat either. He was a true fighter who would fight anyone, and may he Rest In Peace
What an incredible human being! Survived Vietnam and all the fixes that come with boxing to still become a champion and then some. Unheralded in longevity in the sport for thirty years. What a warrior and boxer. Thanks for sharing Rich!

I was 18 at the old Times Square Gym when I met Mamby. That was in 1990. He was still sparring young guys in intense sessions. He stayed in shape. I will be 50 this year. That guy was something else.

I got to meet and greet Mamby when I was living in the South Bronx where Johns Gym was located, he was training his son at the time. he was a down to earth kind of guy and treated me like he knew me for a long time. he was a great Boxer and a great human being. R.I.P.
Saoul "the witch" Mamby I loved watching him. He got a ton of opportunities because he was always ready....He was ready when the opportunity came almost 20 years into his career. I loved this guy. Boxing gives some true Rocky opportunities. He was awesome. Mamby defended the title several times to show he was worthy as a champion. His defense against DeJesus cements him as a solid champ. Rich I can't thank you enough for this series... Dejesus as a Lightweight was awesome. Mamby, just like Bruce Curry had the worst management team. How do you have to arrive in a world title fight in sketchy van. Haley I thought did win the fight first fight. 30 years in the sport! Mamby was awesome and he should be in the HOF.....
Growing up in NYC between the Bronx and Spanish Harlem, I heard Saoul Mamby's name a lot in boxing circles. Looking back at some of the dudes this guy fought, the guy was a warrior. Another fighter that i must admit to not having seen much of is the former WBC super lightweight champion Saoul Mamby, he came up the hard old school way when losing fights early on was part of the learning curve, he beat the late Esteban De Jesus ‘who was the first man to beat Roberto Duran’ like a lot of professional boxers who don’t know when it’s over he carried on way to long ‘boxing in 5 different decades’ having his last contest at the age of 60! he defended he’s world title 4 times against decent opposition,the great Larry Holmes had a lot of respect for him, you just don’t get fighters like this anymore, well done again TH-cam’s Rich The Fight Historian

I used to watch Mamby fight on the USA network Tuesday Night fights. He was a great boxer. I had to laugh when the announcers said that one of the guys he was fighting was the same age as his daughter!

Saoul reminds me of all time great Eddie Perkins from Chicago. Great ring mechanic who had to go around the world to get fights and was often the victim of a home town decision. When Perkins fought Jose Napoles in Mexico he lost a decision that the Mexican ring correspondent called the worst decision he had ever seen. I used to watch Eddie train at Johnny Coulons gym in Chicago. RIP Saoul.
I was 6 years old when I saw his first fight with Leroy Haley. This was one of the first fights I vividly remember watching on TV along with Mancini VS Kim. Mamby was such an underrated fighter who received a lot of bad decisions in his opponents home town. He had great skills and I would have loved to have seen in the ring today with Floyd and Manny and other stars. He wouldn’t have beaten them all but all of them would have a rough night. I didn’t pay much attention to him when he was fighting. Now I understand that I missed out. He was a great warrior and a fine man. Rich, your documentaries continue to amaze me for their content and production value.

Thank you Rich...It's about time someone recognized (saoul) one of the best left hookers that ever stepped into a ring...from non to no support as far as politics went...Saoul fought everyone, anywhere, anytime, he was always in shape and in my opinion was one of the top welterweights ever...no mention of the boxing hall of fame? he should be there...R.I.P. sweet saoul...
