My late pop Mark used to run a tire store in the valley. He became friends with Carlos. I met Carlos when I was kid. At one of the sports conventions. He signed my boxing gloves and 2 pictures. He was one of the nicest, most down to earth people I ever met. Hope he's doing well&wish him all the best.
It is always nice when I see a video come up and know ahead of time it isn't ending in misery and sadness. Great video as Carlos is still around and active today doing a ton of signings and public speaking gigs. Great guy and a helluva fighter.
I started taking boxing lessons in 1977 and Palomino was Welterweight champion at the time and was my favorite fighter growing up. Saw him live during his comeback in the late 90s at the Palladium in Hollywood CA. Loved the Miller Lite commercials he starred in. For a 72 year old, he's still in great shape.
He's still in great shape because he still does a lot of running and it keeps him in great shape. He told me once that running helped him more than anything. When he was fighting, he was able to outlast a lot of fighters because he built up his stamina running so much. A lot of the time a fighter would start to get tired and his stamina would kick in and he'd kick it up a notch while the other fighter was tired.
Riveting! Palomino was a great fighter and many boxing afficienados see the strength, courage, TRUE grit, and endurance, a 3 musketeers of a fighter .. always there representing his class!
Saw the Palomino v Green fight at Wembley in 1977, great fight, Carlos was a great champion, my lasting memory of that night was on fact after the fight when Carlos and his manager Jackie McCoy walked through the arena and the crowd all stood and applauded him , utmost respect shown to a great fighter
I remember Carlos Palomino. It's sad that not many people do. Palomino was kind of like the in-between welterweight champion, coming on the scene as champ after the great Jose Napoles and before Sugar Ray Leonard. I saw Wilfred Benitez beat Palomino by decision and then later Roberto Duran also took a decision from Palomino. Those two losses I think are the main fights that people think of when they think of Carlos Palomino. However, Palomino was a very good fighter. Not a flashy style but very sound technically and a decent puncher. Glad to know he's still alive and doing well.
Yeah and my Primo got screwed in that Benitez fight, that should have NEVER happened the way it did!! He was the champion and they allowed Benitez to choose when and where the fight was going to be held? That would NEVER happen nowadays!!
Very smart man and a heck of a champion. Seven title defenses at welterweight in ANY era isn't easy at all. It's always nice to see one of your docs that doesn't end in a tragedy as unfortunately so many boxer's stories do. He's led a pretty charmed life as even his comeback looked good - him being in shape and looking more like a 30 year old than a 47 year old. Anyway - Thanks as always brother. You've got a fan for life here.
This is a fascinating documentary on Palomino. I have known of Palomino all my life due his defeating of our John H Stracey. But this documentary really educated me the man Carlos Palomino. Thanks for putting together
Carlos Palomino was part of that Golden Era of welterweights from the late 70s to the early 80s. Had he not been fighting at the same time as Benitez, Duran, Hearns, Leonard etc, he'd have reigned much longer. For a while the dream fight at 147 was a matchup between himself and Pipino Cuevas that could have gone either way. Back then welters were all around 5'10" and spent their careers in that division. At 5'8" Duran was still a big welter, and 147 was probably his natural fighting weight. Palomino was a classy boxer with a crushing left hook, and us Brits remember him for his demolition jobs over John H Stracey and Dave Boy Green. Great fighter and a real gentleman!
So many other boxing channels just focus on quick clips and knockouts. I appreciate that you show big chunks of the fights and strive to provide so much information on the fighters.
I got into boxing during the Pacquiao era & many of the fights around or before 99’ I just remember vague watching as a kid. I love these contributions to fighters who weren’t super stars. It connects me even deeper with the era I missed & the love of the sport. Cheers
Fantastic, thank you so much ! Remember Carlos being the scurge of the british beating John H Stacey and Dave boy Green and always coming across as a true champ and real gentleman ! Thanks again, and again.
Hey Carlos, Just watched your documentary. I remember when you were detective Ramirez in the movie, "My Samurai". I was one of your four policemen who ran up the hill chasing the criminal! ( We filmed it in Indian Hills, Colorado). You wanted me to show you around Denver but my Dad had dropped me off and I didn't have a car. You gave me an autographed 🥊 boxing card which you signed in gold ink!! I'm glad you were successful in acting. You have had an exciting life! I remember your lines they cut out of our scene, which cut me out of the film. " I see miles and miles of mountains". Take care, Tom Lippi Denver
Loved this video and remember Carlos Palomino coming over to London and beating up our boy. Just as a point of order, this wasn't Stracey's first defense. He'd already defended against Hegemon Lewis, who would also be a great choice for one of your marvelous documentaries. Thanks, as always.
To the person or persons creating these documentaries, THANK YOU!!! These are so important. Absolute treasures. These prize fighters stories are so meaningful and filled with courage, rise, fall, and often humbling. I’m 60 and I remember many of these fights like they were yesterday. Not only are ALL of these life stories and fights historic treasures, these films are put together brilliantly. Thank you again. They mean a great deal to a lot of people. They are a huge part of history.
Excellent work. I'm 37, so never got to see these guys live, but like yourself, to a lesser extent of course, I am a big fan of the history and the timeframe of these guys.
The opening is exactly right. That lite beer commercial was my introduction to Carlos Palomino. It's still great! And once I discovered him, of course he was a terrific fighter.
These boxing documentarys of fighting men that most people have forgot are beautiful as a hole new audience gets to see these men do what they do best. Great upload Rich.
I absolutely love your videos. You fill in all the missing spaces, and gaps in my / our knowledge, and prick those memories. I remember Dave Boy Green losing that fight for instance, but then you never really know about the other fella’s story, do you. Your films are amazing tributes to the boxing legends who we’ve all either forgotten about or hadn’t ever really heard of. Moreover, you tell these stories is brilliantly well, and the archive you keep finding is pretty special. I’m a big fan. Thank you.
A very classy champion. He didn't need to showboat or steal rounds with flashy flurries. Just an honest, tough and smart welterweight champion who doesn't get his props as one of the greats. It didn't matter if it was in Wembley Stadium or a ring in San Juan, Carlos always let his fists speak for him. Most fans know he really clocked Tony Danza on the set of Taxi when they filmed that scene. He, of course, was supposed to pull the punch but he caught Danza right on the button. If you watch the scene closely, Palomino reacts with shock and embarrassment. So glad he's healthy. I don't know what that senior citizen comeback was all about. Glad it was short lived!
Carlos was that rare combination of class and incredible toughness. Both a boxer and, when needed, a fighter. His talents in front of the camera - well above and beyond those in the ring - were equal in measure. Had he been given the opportunity, there's no doubt that he could easily have carried a series or enjoyed a very successful film career!
Great documentary Rich..I’m a big fan of Palomino because he is a rare example of a hard work and a gracious champion, he had real through back class where a lot of today’s paper champs show no class at all. One thing that I always admire and respect is when a boxer goes to an opponents back yard especially when in another country, it takes real balls to do that and then to win and go back again is something else. I more admire these type of champions than I do the big name boxers who have all their fights within their own home area. I have read autobiography’s of a number of boxers in the past and some of the difficulties they had when they had fights when they defended or challenged for titles. They had to sometimes put up with a lot of aggravation before the fight. Iv seen Hatton fight at home plus Calzaghe and their home town fans really made the atmospheres intimidating. And the British fight fans were usually a conservative yet still a vocal crowd. Thanks again Rich.
I remember watching Carlos spark Stracey and Dave “Boy” Green on FREE TV !! when I was a kid. A brilliant fighter Great stuff yet again by RTFH. Another fighter from the past that no modern day “boxing fan” knows about Keep em coming 🥊🥊💥💥💥🥊🥊
Man i love this channel one of my favs in the boxing TH-cam channels. All these overlooked but good boxers I'd have never known if not for this channel.
Those body shots are brutal 50 years later! Thanks, Rich! Carlos was a great fighter, and had insane power in both hands. I never felt like he didn't give it all he had, even in the Duran fight.
4:27, the golden voice of Jim Healy . He is in the Hollywood Walk of fame . He did the Boxing at the Olympic alone. He was the blow by blow and commentator all by himself . He had the funniest 30-minute sports radio show on KMPC 710 ever .
Thank you for posting a great product on a fine world champion! My Godfather ("Nino") Joe Tovar was a member of Palomino's corner (he is the man shown hugging and lifting up Palomino at 16:02 ) and it was a delight to see him again (at least in an old video). I appreciate being able to see these old fights, tremendously.
Caros Palomino was a fantastic fighter. His technique was sound and he could kayo you with either hand. He was one of those fighters that everyone loved. He had a very likable personality and yes,That commercial made him one of the most famous face in boxing. I am so happy that his story didn't end bad as did so many of the fighters who I loved. I loved him as a fighter ,actor and as a human being and happy to know that he is still around and doing well. Thanks again Rich! Your boxing channel is the best!

These guys put todays fighters to shame
It is always nice when I see a video come up and know ahead of time it isn't ending in misery and sadness. Great video as Carlos is still around and active today doing a ton of signings and public speaking gigs. Great guy and a helluva fighter.
Great Champion, great guy. Determination and grit defined Carlos Palomino.

You have probably the best boxing documentary channel on TH-cam. You articulate everything so well! Thank you for bringing us another hit🥊🥊
I appreciate that, Chris.
Agree....!
@@RichtheFightHistorian you got it🥊
@@RichtheFightHistorian He's right Rich 👍
Yes I agree. Rummys Corner has now been knocked off the podium by the Fight historian 🥊

A true gentleman of the sport. I followed him from his earliest days.
I remember Carlos Palomino.

His fight with Duran was one of the best fights I ever saw👍👊👌👌
I loved that episode of TAXI.
I have it on DVD.
Carlos Palomino is a true champion and a gentleman.
Wow! Great tribute! What an accomplishment to be a champion in that era. Palomino fought Duran right after fighting Benitez? Thats unheard of nowadays
Thanks, John. I haven't heard Maynard's name in a long while, will look into him.
Yeah and my Primo got screwed in that Benitez fight, that should have NEVER happened the way it did!! He was the champion and they allowed Benitez to choose when and where the fight was going to be held? That would NEVER happen nowadays!!

He was always a favorite of mine and I don’t think he ever got the recognition he deserved. Great fighter in the Mexican warrior tradition.
Palomino was a true phone booth warrior. I am also surprised at the number of defenses he made in a short amount of time.

Palomino damn sure earned his victories.......if there were any "gimme" fights, I didn't see them.
Palomino had good boxing skills and some punching power. That is why he got so many wins and became a champion.

Carlos Palomino, Class A Champion 🏆🙏👍
He used to go to Westminster boxing Club where I trained as a teenager I remember he had a Corvette with the license plates that said round 15

Friday nights on TV. Used to watch with my Dad.
When you look at Palomino, more than the fighters he faced it’s the fact he went into other fighters home territory.
What a great fighter. Swarming style giving you no rest. Have to be ultra fit to even think about fighting like that.
Went the distance with Duran. Few boxers went to distance with Duran at that time. Close fight with Benitez. Great guy.

Great boxing documentaries sir. I love all of your work. Great biographies!
Thanks so much.

John H Stracey was my hero at the time but I went on to be a big fan of Carlos Palomino a great fighter

Certainly a case of a fighter being a better fighter the bigger the occasion. Seemed to gain snap in his punches from that point on.
Still had the old 3 strand ring
Carlos you're a real hero to me !!!

I appreciate that, Jason, thank you.

Thank you, A Kleine.

Great video, thank you. I always liked Carlos and I'm glad he found a good end to his career in boxing.
