  • A mother struggles to raise her son after losing her husband to cancer.
LIKE TURTLES is used with permission from David Mandell. Learn more at blankslatepictures.com.
After losing her husband to cancer and amassing a crippling amount of medical debt, Molly and her young son Ronnie are left to fend for themselves and have lost everything.
Molly struggles to get back on her feet as she tries to keep her son healthy on the streets even with an asthma condition and find a job after a decade as a stay-at-home mom. She also tries to instill a sense of security and stability for her son, shielding him from the difficulty of their life. But when Ronnie's asthma flares up, Molly must face the precariousness of her life, despite all of her attempts towards normality.
Written and directed by David Mandell and starring actor Troian Bellisario from TV favorite PRETTY LITTLE LIARS, this short drama puts a personal, emotional face on the widespread problem of homelessness. It combines a visual naturalism, with handheld camerawork utilized in an almost doc-like way to capture the telling details of this family's world, from the way they brush their teeth in a public fountain to the lived-in interior of their car.
The writing, though, patiently builds up the emotional reality of homelessness for this particular woman and her child. It focuses on Molly's dilemma, as she must manage the logistical hurdles of having no permanent address and few job prospects while trying to be emotionally stable and available to her vulnerable young son. The storytelling and editing focus on this psychological juggling act, making for an emotionally intimate experience for the viewer.
With its expressive musical score and the nature of the material, the film could easily fall into melodrama. But it's held together by a finely nuanced performance by Bellisario, who offers up an unvarnished, raw portrayal of a woman struggling against great odds. What works about her performance is how it places Molly's role as a mother and protector at the foreground of her character.
From one scene to the next, she is always a mother trying to do her best for her son, whether it's in the warm, patient way she talks and plays with Ronnie to her impatience and frustration when he demands a cheeseburger instead of the sandwich given to them. When she comes up against the obstacles that arise from their economic and social precariousness, it is always seen within the framework of motherhood, and it is never played for victimhood.
Molly never gives up, is as resourceful as possible in her circumstances and is always connected to the love and obligation she feels as a mother. As a result, Molly's strength, vulnerability and immense love always shine through each moment of the short, even when she hits her lowest point and can no longer protect Ronnie from the harsh reality of their life.
LIKE TURTLES ends with some sobering statistics about homelessness, which dovetail with its objective to give viewers an intimate, emotional understanding of the "slippery slope" that often leads to permanent homelessness. Molly has a lot of persistence and a bit of luck, but sadly, many people who struggle with homelessness in real life don't. Storytelling like this aims to invoke empathy and compassion to put us into another's shoes. It's an almost old-fashioned approach -- except that it is still so necessary in a world where problems like homelessness continue to persist, and people like Molly fall deeper in the cracks of society, to be forgotten or overlooked.

As a homeless mom, my absolute low was having to panhandle. It's completely degrading. But, the people who stopped to help me reinforced my faith in humanity. We are a "lucky" homeless family we are able to stay in a motel and my husband has a job and we all are together....
Please try to remember that every person that you pass by, sometimes without noticing, also have a story.

I hope you don’t mind me asking, but how do you get food and how do you manage to get feminine products if necessary? Do some things come before others (like food and water before jackets/ socks/shoes)

@@Sophie-vs3vr I don't mind the questions. I've had to learn how to budget...and I'm honest enough with myself to admit budgeting was our biggest problem and part of the reason we ended up homeless. But yes, we prioritize. Having a roof over our heads comes first. Then food then my husband has a phone for work etc. We are lucky to have Wi-Fi included in our room fee so I have a cheap smart phone that I share with my kids. The dollar store and thrift stores are excellent resources for clothing and shoes. I buy a lot of clearance items when I can. Feminine hygiene products are relatively cheap if you don't mind the generic stuff.
We qualify for food stamps now, which helps a lot. And after 2 years we are getting ready to move into our own place. Again budgeting is huge. We don't have a car. We walk when we can and if not we take a bus. I'm lucky to live in America where even being homeless is not as bad as some in the world have it. We have Faith and each other and that's what matters.

Our health system isn’t as bad as other ones, though. People from Canada come to the usa bc the waiting list for necessary surgeries is too long and there is no guarantee that you’ll get an appointment even if you are at the front of the list, but it’s a lot cheaper. While here in the usa, you can get these procedures done at any hospital that you want without waiting and with guarantee, but it’s also more expensive compared to Canada. I was so happy to see Troian Bellisario in the thumbnail on my recommended! For those who aren’t familiar, she is an amazing actress. She starred on Pretty Little Liars and has been in several drama films and shows. She did a short series about r*pe in the military and you can find it on TH-cam. It’s called “Lauren.” Very hard to watch but important. Her father is Donald Bellisario aka the creator of NCIS, Quantum Leap, Magnum PI and etc. and her mother is Deborah Pratt (who starred in Quantum Leap). Troian is married to Patrick Adam’s (star of the show Suits). So there’s some facts about the star of this short film. I’m a huge fan of Pretty Little Liars and all of her work. ❤️

Yes...this scene made me think of when I took my son to the ER one day, when he was suffering a bad headache.
While we waited, standing BC there were no seats available, I noticed a young Aboriginal woman with a gash on her head. She started talking to me, telling me she was in great pain, from being hit on the head with a glass bottle.
I felt bad for her, so I kept talking to her. And at one point, I handed her a wet towel, to put on her gash. When I looked up, I noticed everyone in the ER, that was close enough, were staring at me. Then my husband looked at me and called me over.
He told me, I should get away from "her", BC she looked dirty and possibly drunk.
I told Him that it didn't seem like she was drunk, and I was trying to be caring.
Even the nurse at the nurse's station was giving me a look that told me to stop and she told me I could possibly catch something!!

It’s unfortunate we can have a homeless problem anywhere in this country with the number of abandoned/repossessed homes and buildings that exist.
When we stop putting a monetary value on people’s lives we might start to seem some change. Until then we have to be the voice for those who have none-it’s nearly impossible to get a job without a permanent address and when you’re broke working your way back up to a roof over your head is nearly impossible.
If you don’t want to help personally that’s your own prerogative and right but please don’t stand in the way of people who want to see reform.

Homeless could be ended easily if we stopped looking at housing as commodity and investment and as a human right ... especially considering we have way more empty houses than homeless people , even in the UK (where I live)

When the reality of homelessness is so harsh, they give us stories like this one.
If a homeless mother stood on a corner with her child, the police would be called. The child would be placed into "protective custody". It might take years to get that child back.

I’m always too self aware that it is a movie but god in ~20 minutes of this short film I was brought to tears and got teary eyed 2 times.
Once when the son was experiencing his asthma attack and the mother was holding him in his arms while the man outside banged on the doors of the car
Then of course when the son “transferred his strength” to a stranger he had never met before
    I cried to that one

The amount of stress a dedicated mother endures while doing everything they can to,protect their child is legit trauma, in and of itself, within these traumatic experiences. Parenting is the hardest job on the planet when you take it as seriously as portrayed in this film. Those that say it isn’t, either aren’t as dedicated and aware as bringing a human into the world deserves or, they are extremely privileged in the most otherwise trying areas of life.

I remember this one time when I couldn't go back home yet (I don't really remember why) and it was like 9 pm, I had no money on me, and it was cold and raining. It was so frustrating and stressful. But I told myself that in a few hours I'd be home, in bed, I'd be fine. And then it came to me that some people, a lot of them, they don't have a home. When they feel this frustration (it's every day), they also feel excruciating fear. They have nowhere to go, they're always tired and alone against people who'd want to hurt them, so on top of everything, they're in danger.
And there are very rich people in the world who for no reason other than avarice have decided to keep it all to themselves. Why would one need that much money?
So, to all rich people, if you one day feel this frustration, or the fear of being beaten up, or the fear of losing everything, think about how some people have to go through the same thing, only each and every second of their life. Be a little more compassionate, it's literally that easy.

you need to research how free health care isn't free. socialism has never and will never work. those who work end up paying up to 70% of their income so the country can have " free" healthcare. Many become homeless themselves unable to afford housing due to most of their pay being taken by the government to give "free" things.Nothing is free.Someone has to pay for it before it is acquired and given away. A country full of homeless who get free healthcare is nowhere near a solution.Being homeless creates more health problems. What about food? what about a phone or transportation funds so you can get to a job? I have been homeless for 4 years. sometimes it's better if only people who lived it get to decide.I pray you never ends up homeless.apparently you have no clue.
