I sauté on a separate non-stick pan to avoid the burn then transfer the food (including bits if I’m sautéing meat) to the InstantPot. I know this defeats the purpose of using one kitchen item but it works for me and the cleanup is super easy.

Robert Smith - I’m going to use your method, Robert! I wish I would have thought of using a non-stick pan and then transferring everything to the ipot before I got the BURN notice. :)))

Honestly, using a no stick pan and transferring is easier and the extra clean up is minimal.

My answer to assisting "the transition from boiling to pressure cooker" which my 3L Duo-Nova instant pot seems to be pretty lousy at? NB, I still get the burn message, even without using the saute function at all, is at that point when it is boiling: to get a pair of tweezers and pull up the stainless steel button, and slip a small knife in at its' waist to hold it up while I am also pushing down gently on the lid to improve the seal, that means all the automatics are defeated, and in moments I've got pressure, you may need to cancel? then press pressure-cooker again to get rid of the burn message: and 3/5 seconds later the screen goes to "On", the burn message has disappeared. and it simply continues/has transitioned to its' pressure cooker mode.. :)

I kept getting the BURN notice, I added more water stirred the pot and still it happened, I finally dumped the food in another pot and behold at the bottom of the insta pot there was a layer of burned food, it took me a few to scrub it off, I put the food back in the insta pot and it cooked perfectly, no more BURN notice!

    * I live at 7,000 Ft in Colorado. I've noticed using my instant pot that I need to add more liquid and add 5 to 10 minutes time to get stuff as done as I want it sometimes. I think at higher altitudes you need to adjust recipes and time it takes to cook them just a little bit for the best results. 🎀

I have an 8 quart duo. When I look at the specifications it has a higher wattage which causes higher temperatures and more pressure psi than the other Instant Pots. I have seen the burn notice many times especially when I have a tomato based sauce. To combat this, when I use my 8 quart for a 6 quart recipe, I use the low pressure and I reduce the temperature to less. Tomatoes burn quickly so I make sure water goes in the pot first and tomatoes last. Don’t stir in tomatoes/tomato sauce. This has worked well for me. Hope it helps.

This explains a lot! I hardly ever get the burn notice with our 6 qt, but get it frequently with the 8qt duo, doing exactly the same thing as with the 6qt (and yes, adjusting for volume). Thought I was going crazy.

I am so GLAD that you’re addressing the “burn” notice on the ipot!! I was too embarrassed to ask because I knew I probably did a very dumb thing. I actually feel somewhat validated to find out that I wasn’t the only one! i've learned mine does it when there is no problem. I just ignore and it pressurizes, cooks right on and there is no problem. I did have a bit of a scorch on the bottom of chicken and dumplins (there is no g at the end of this word) but the over all end product was not effected. just a bit of a brillo scrub at the end for clean up. I'm still getting the hang of my instant pot, but thanks to the six sisters, that pressure luck guy, a few others, I'm doing pretty well.

Thanks so much for video! Have used instant pot regularly then got burn notice. Turns out for some reason the pressure release valve wasn't working right and it was just venting steam. Used my 3 quart for the first time to make Jasmin rice. (I have the larger model and have used it for years with no issues.) Used a
1:1 ratio rice to water. 1 cup of each and...burn. I turned off the pot made some quick rice in the stovetop. When I returned to the pot 15 minutes later I released the residual steam and opened the pot to find a little rice stuck to the bottom, but otherwise perfect rice. What was stuck on the bottom was not even brown. 🤷🏻‍♀️ I did not use the rice function since I'd seen numerous people mention that jasmine rice shouldn't be cooked using the standard rice function. Going to have to add more water next time or try the built in rice function, I guess. Hope that I didn't get a bad pot.

We had an instant pot that I could cook ANYTHING in. I could sautee and not completely deglaze, tomato based sauces, all kinds of thick things cooked great! We got the new version of the exact same one and it's nearly unusable. Literally every single time. They sent a replacement and the one they sent is exactly the same. BURN, BURN, BURN. All I can assume is that the newer IPs are simply just not made the same way. I relied HEAVILY on it as I am disabled and it was an absolute life saver. I've been researching non IP brands and none of them come close to my old IP that I miss so much! We have gone back to using the crock pot! It's so frustrating.

I had an awful problem with my instant pot in the beginning, getting the burn notice all the time. I changed from one cup of water to 1 1/4 cup of water and it works great. You might want to try adding just a little bit more water and see if it works.

  • @kenball1980

The burn notice doesn't necessarily mean something is actually burning, it's a warning that the bottom of the pot is getting to hot which could potentially cause burning. I stick to the easy stuff the instant pot was designed for and not the more advanced and risky dump and go dishes and I've never sauteed anything in it. I find it easier to saute in a pan on the stove anyway. I've never had a burn notice and I use my instant pot constantly.

Hope you see this Six Sisters' Stuff Kristen. Instant pot with one to one ratio of rice to water + half cup of water, then pour in thick sauce + spices (powders of: onion, garlic, chicken, and ginger). Always end with the "burn notice," not the TV series. The confusion is when opening the pot there is little bit of water on top. Don't know what to do?
Had to add: 3 min. high pressure settings.

I had a pressure cooker XL before this instant pot. I NEVER had this issue. I use the pressure cooker cause it saves me time…. Period! If I have to open it up every time I get the ‘burn’ message, that defeats the purpose. Now I have to scrape the bottom and then basically start all over as far as waiting for the instant pot to re-pressurize and start cooking again. Seems like a serious flaw to me and I will be returning if possible. I always have liquids in my pot to cook. Just crazy! It maddens me to no end! I get the burn message 95% of the time that I use it!

I get the burn notice on chili I use an 8 quart and the reason isn't the liquid, its the weight of the beans and tomato's so what I ended up doing the first few times is scraping the pot and that worked, then I changed the way I make it by adding some of the can beans in after I cooked it and that took care of seeing the burn for me

Burn notice makes me turn into angry Hulk. Agghhh!!!!! I have wondered if I have a sensitive pot put nah I am just not adding enough liquid sometimes.
I have learned to never follow alot of recipies put out there to a t and add more liquid than called for if I sense the need to and to never stir cream soup in. Sometimes I just saute the meat in a frying pan. It is one more thing to clean but it is better than that blasted burn notice that turns me into an angry Hulk.
Also I am going to really clean my pot just in case there is something under the heating element. Thanks fr the video.

Thank you so much for this, I knew it would be youtube to the rescue. I just got a burn notice twice making Chilli and sure enough it was slightly scorched to the bottom. So I guess that means adding the can of mexi-beans and the Chilli sachet at the end in the future. Thats a bit of a buggar, but what do ya do hey! Once again thank you!

Hi Kristen, tonight, I got the burn notice. I sautéed chicken first and probably didn't scrape enough afterwards. I ended up having to take everything out and put it in a bowl and scrape the bottom of the instant pot Pan. Then I put it back in added a quite a bit more liquid and tried again - and got the burn notice right away and more food burned to the bottom of my pan. What am I doing wrong?

I had a tip not to sauté meat just put it straight in the pan with the other veggies if you’re making a stew, it works for me.

My old ALDI pressure cooker would do this but instead of the animated display while heating it would just show the time it was set for, I found it did it if I had to much in there like making soup or rice and I use 6 cups(well small coffee cup measures of water). I always now just leave the lid off and stir the food every few minutes till it starts to simmer and it will pressurize and work. But a few times it still fails so I just turn it off and as it does get to pressure it cooks the stuff. My machine is about 12 years old and done heaps of cycles so may be failing as well, But not bad for $50 AUD.

I’m on my 2nd pot and get the food burn often. It’s so annoying. I never had issues with the 1st pot except one time in the begging with a Thai sauce that used peanut butter. I learned what to do after that. I’ve had this second pot a long time now but will see if I can get it replaced.

*I love the instant pot so much! I have made quinoa, chicken, chili, asparagus **MyBest.Kitchen** and yogurt in it so far. The only thing that didn't work great was the asparagus. I cooked it for 1 minute and it was still overdone. It is a timesaver and uses much less energy than my gas stove.*

I keep getting the burn notice on pressure cook with the lux mini model, I've used the full recipe of the butter chicken, and I've tried cutting the recipe in half ( that's whats recommended for the lux mini) and I get the burn every single time. I have zero control of how hot the pot gets, it's seems to get way too hot for no reason. And I add extra water to deglaze after saute is done. So I have extra thin liquid and I still get the burn at least once. The bottom of the pot does have burned crust on it so I know it's not a sensitive pot, it's simply way too hot. And I can't change it.

You spoke at length about what causes the 'burn' warning, but what you didn't say is that in order to scrape the bottom of the pot clean you first need to turn off the pot, release the pressure, and empty its contents completely. And that if even the tiniest amount of burnt food is left on the bottom of the pot before restarting the process the burn warning will reappear almost immediately as the pot heats up - a hard lesson learned after numerous attempts to clean the pot 'on the go'. On the other hand, I've seen a few cooking videos and blogs that recommend completely ignoring the burn warning and continuing on as if nothing was awry. I haven't tried this and wonder if anyone who has done might comment?

A small tip which I found out by error - when cooking steel cut oats and the recipe calls for example a cup of milk (whole 2% or skim): of that cup, use three fourth of a cup of milk and a fourth cup of water. The author above is right - you need water and not just pure milk to allow the IP to generate pressure.
