Coming from a young lad whos just after getting his full license its clearly down to what we can afford now a days.To me the best car i can get for around €5.000 is an is200 an e46 or some dirty diesel and thats it.Where as when i look back to your era and i hear off all the cars u could get for €5.000 u could go on and on about cool fast cars.We really just have very little selection. On top of that vrt tax insurance and fuel price makes everything fast or cool impossible for a young lad to get so i will have to wait till im atleast 25 to be getting a car that can acctually be appreciated by the likes of u.Until then i guess i will just have to be driving around my 1.6 passat😂

Keep the interest it shud bounce back over here . Here's hoping. Show up to the meets u can and encourage others. The community isn't a community anymore. The buzz even 12 or so years ago was so different to today nobody talks to one another in person anymore like they used to but as I said the more that get out to whatever meet they can they shud . Good things come to those who wait . The car u want wil come 😎

The thing with RDS EUROPE is that Russia is so big, that there is a europe part and asian part. Last years was rds europe and rds asia and rds south and rds siberia. That is a younger championchip, where cars are not so powerfull and drivers not so experiensed. And in 2022 rds sad that in 2022 will be only europe championship from that youngest.

Previously many of us were obsessed with our car builds. We showed them on a forum. Some people got shot down, some people were motivated to do much much more. That community feedback enthused the obsessed guys, and made the dickheads with no eyes either change or just go away.
Now I don't really see the same level of obsession for builds, and there's no real central community to steer people in the right direction anymore. There are little FB communities that ego massage each others mediocre 'builds'. But it'll rarely go further than that because everything is disposably and no one in that FB group can get past the first 10 seconds of a TH-cam vid that might actually inspire them because someone says errrrr....
Keep up the good work guys. You are a lot better at it than me, but I think we look at it the same way. I'm resigned to be unsuccessful in terms of TH-cam algorithms. But happy to reach the small appreciative percentage that matter.

When forums died, I lost interest building cars cause you used to be able to bounce your ideas and pushing boundaries with people all over the world, I think I brought the rocket bunny rx7 and sr20 rx8 to one show in mondello and then parked them up and lost interest. I notice with the new generation cause I roll arches on all those is200's you spoke about and they want our cars but to them it's like owning a Ferrari, it's so unattainable they can't imagine owning one. Really enjoyed this…I totally agree with the Irish car scene at the moment. Was at a car meet last weekend, some top class cars on show, but yet all the bora drivers and passats preferred messing around the car park instead of looking at the top cars, (again nothing wrong with this), but that got me thinking, are they really into cars or is it just a fad at their age…🤔

Its impossible for young people to get insurance in any type of old cars they will laugh at you when you ring them. Also the prices are gone out of reach now so people as just buying what's available and making the most of it.

To change the Irish car culture, we need to change the mindset of Irish car enthusiasts.
A lot of new People to the scene are so single minded. Not open to unique builds or different cars.
“How fast is she” “ ah my GTD is faster then that” “She’s no is200 lad“
There’s more to a car then going “ boo “ , doing rings or going “fast” in a straight line.
People Very quick to judge and give negative remarks.
We should be more welcoming to all car owners. Respect builds and be more inviting to all members.
We should be quick to call out peoples toxic behaviour. There’s no room for discrimination, sexist remarks and hate speech in the scene.
Slating people’s cars for a few videos on TikTok should be looked down upon heavily.
Not to be encouraging this behaviour by liking or giving them attention.
Perhaps a series of videos on the “Dos and Don’ts at car meets“ might help educate people on correct etiquette at car meets / cars and coffee events

Having spent about 7 years amongst the Irish, Northern Irish and Scottish car scene now, I see the huge similarities between the North and the South but also how much more money needs to be paid by the Irish for the same car in NI and the rest of the UK, like you guys always say. You guys do a fantastic job at inspiring young people to build a car for oneself and not for the rest of the world, this is something I'm very passionate about myself and I'm very thankful to be surrounded by great family and friends that share that passion.
Some builds I have around me are a lifted/ offroad 250bhp Mk4 Golf Estate, V6 swapped resto 70's cortina, ~300bhp R53 JCW Mini and my own 2.3t Volvo 940 drift build (In progress). These cars are all so much fun to drive, great to look at and interesting to develop/ modify, this makes ALL the hard work worth it! These aren't status quo builds and that's what makes them exciting for us. More people need to find a car they like and make it better, rather than ruining it for other people's entertainment.
I think we need more people in Ireland/ NI to put out content showing the great reward of 'completing' an amazing build, but also the hardships that come along the way. This is something I hope and plan to start very soon on TH-cam.
Darren from Group D's drift car is phenomenal but that's only because he built the car how he wanted and not for any popularity/ fame and there are tonnes more examples like this around the country but there's definitely potential for more and I hope to see that over the next few years like you do too.
Loved the podcast btw, I think its a great addition to the channel and looking forward to hearing more of your chats every week, superb!

Great podcast lads, was very enjoyable to listen too. Loved the forum days , back then aside from the "divides" like Honda heads and rwd or Toyota lads ,there wasn't much negativity on them in my experience, it didn't matter what you had or were doing, people would generally appreciate it. What I found which I'd say now was probably 12-15 years ago , I would have been late teens / early 20s , I didn't know much but the older lads or lads who had built cars and had a lot more experience in it where more encouraging , helpful and generally supportive, so I think that helped the scene flourish. Obviously along with jdm cars being a hell of a lot more affordable to have and run. Nowadays it seems the older more experienced car folk have the opinion of "if I don't like that car or part of the scene I'm not going to offer anything to it" and I think one of the reasons for it is because people get defensive or offended by criticism especially the younger generation, so in return , the older lads like ourselves don't want to argue or justify themselves for offering advice or an idea , where as when I was younger I'd take on board and listen to people's advice/ideas due to me seeing on the forum that person's build threads or comments and seeing they knew what they where talking about. I found at times when I used to go to meets you felt like you knew that person when you met them because their threads almost gave you an insight into their personality. I noticed as the years went on when the forums started to die off and social media became more prominent , the meets started to get less social , even seeing people just sitting in their cars not getting out to chat to some random dude because you didn't know them, forums where a huge ice breaker back then , you could walk up and say a username and chat for 20 minutes without ever having met that person in real life and I think that social aspect of feeling like you know someone even when you didn't really made it a lot easier to make friends , which sometimes led to things like "hey wanna help me fit coilovers" or " pop up to our shed one of the days to work on cars" .. Jesus apologies for the shhpeel, just when you mentioned forums I got very nostalgic 😅😅 keep up the good work men 👏

Editing my comment after having some thought on it. Totally agree with everything in this, we're in safe hands with you lads thinking this way!
Personally, I've fallen out of love with the 'car scene' here because of the nonsense that goes on at local meets etc. The days of reading threads on forums and looking forward to actually seeing the cars in person are gone. It's a mindset / mentality thing with these guys in is200s / bmws and I'm not sure it can ever be changed. Its typical Irish behaviour to cut and shut a yoke up and go out diffing and wrecking it for a week. Sadly they don't realise it's this sort of bs thats causing huge hassle for motorsport / rallying too and just compounds the whole issue.
ALSO 😁 On the subject of putting effort into builds, a build does not constitute wheels and maxton lip kits. If I'm paying 30 quid into a show I want to see a build with high levels of workmanship, interesting techniques and most importantly, good style. We need to get away from this thing of slapping 900 dimension number plates, a ton of plastic bolt ons and some cast wheels instantly equalling 'show car'. Rant over. Keep it up boys!

  • @dustinrider8113

If it makes y'all feel any better, there are still us out there doing builds for us. I'm 22 so I'm gen z which obviously isn't the freshest car culture in the social media but I do mods to my daily driven stock looking 12 year old mini. For me. Some of them take me hours or days to do and they are for me, on top of that they are on a budget so they are done when I can save enough rather than when my views allow them. Any non car person who looks at my car would say yeah thats a plain old mini but in reality I have almost 100 hrs into it and it's nothing off the wall fast but I enjoy it. And that's why I love your guys content. Real car people doing real car things. 👍

  • @hyimlinsilohan
    @hyimlinsilohan 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

This is not much of a solution but what got me in to the car scene really was forums and build topics with some diy stuff. Topics that showed how you a young lad with no money can still go out and modify/tinker with your car on a budget using parts that are cheap but making them work (like redoing the roof lining that has started to sag, not just going to a junk yard, but picking up some fabric that you think is cool). Doing stuff that might not be the most breathtaking if it is the only thing you did but all the small things around the car adding up to something cool all together.
I think that after forums died the real car enthusiast didnt really go, its just that he doesent have a platform to show off and to talk to other like minded people. For me I was quite lucky to get friends that have similair interests and I can show things to them and vise versa. So we are still doing all these things just not public about it.
My thought of a solution would be the "have a pint and wait for it to blow over" type. I think the 15 second tik tok thing will die down at some point (or stay but only for promoting) and having a place where a proper car enthusiast can go will bring them all out at some point.
Greetings from Latvia, keep it up!

  • @korahmoun
    @korahmoun 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

i think the only solution to the car community is for people to step up and start calling out the builds for likes, the tiktok automotive influencers, and actually to start hyping up those who add some individuality into their builds, i think looking at the progression of the NFS games, and how slowly the customization started to disappear speaks volumes, call out people who build cars for clout, people who call their stock golf r/m140i on lowering springs with a burble tune a build, and start to make those who put effort into their builds the ones that shine. and BRING BACK UNDERGLOW.

So great to finally have an Irish Automotive podcast!! I think there's a series of issues for young people. I know for myself firstly I have nowhere to store and work on a car if I wanted to which kills anything straight away. Then the problem as well is cost because it's almost impossible now on a normal salary to do everything like have the weekend car, buy a house etc.. I think the change that is needed is exposure and creativity. Like if you can't afford a R34 but can afford an E92 diesel what can you do to make that unique, fun engaging and different! Also, TH-cam has a lot to blame because we all see the standard I bought a x, wrapped it, exhaust, why I sold blah blah blah and so people see that routine as standard car culture or to be a "real" car guy you need a 70/200k car. We need more people going I sank everything into a FN2 Civic type R or like you I wide-bodied a golf van! Attainable cars being done in wacky ways to get people thinking hey I'll buy a 1UZ for 2k and stick it in an old Jaguar or Mercedes and see what happens!

  • @elliothayes27
    @elliothayes27 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Great podcast guys! I think one of the biggest problems for young guys is the access to properly modifying a car. Like an is200 may not be that cool but if someone puts a turbo on it etc it completely changes your outlook on it. The main problem is people don't have somewhere really easy to help them. There's almost that stigma like when your at a gym for the first time and don't want to look a fool. There needs to be more people reaching out to the younger guys helping them to take the next step. Parts may not be that accessible over here or the actual guys to help with that type of work charge a premium (rightly so if they can). I also think grassroot motorsport isn't pushed enough. Ive helped run a lot of autotests in the past which a lot of starlets and mx5s are in. I remember last year a video was taken of one of our regular events it was posted online and the Americans went nuts for it with over 2 million views. We can't all get to mondello etc so having events that you can have fun at can really help. Keep up the great work!

  • @emmetburke3360
    @emmetburke3360 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Class podcast lads! With regards to the car scene, you’ve hit the nail on the head. As a young person, there’s only a handful of people my age with cars that are “different” or “unusual”. Like you said there’s so many factors that contribute to this. Your options aren’t necessarily limited to what you can buy, but what you can actually drive. Starting out driving was expensive irrespective of each generation, but what can someone who likes cars and has an interest actually buy and drive now ? You can either go back and buy a mk4/bora/is200 and pay the extortionate tax and insurance (if you can get it for a car that is more than 10 years old) or buy something up in the years that costs far more to buy but has cheaper tax and can be insured. As someone who has owned a few 1.9tdi’s I can say what makes them so attractive is their reliability and ability to take the abuse that every young lad gives their car when they first get it. Most young people live paycheque to paycheque and need to be able to afford to service the car. A full service is much cheaper and easy to do on a mk4 or bora, where as newer cars often have to go to a garage for an average Joe soap to fix/service etc. For anyone trying to insure something a bit older and trying to have something you don’t see everyday (pre2000) it’s physically impossible to insure it. You can ring insurance companies and even offer to pay these extortionate prices but you’ll get told no. So your only real option is either a new car on finance or something like the mk4/bora etc. With respect to the mods and putting your own twist on a car, it’s very hard to commit to doing a build when you need a mode of transport. If you’re lucky enough to be able to afford a daily and a car you want to modify, you have to have space. Most people aren’t fortunate enough to have sheds to do a build in whereas you can swap a set of wheels or lowering springs on in the driveway with limited tools, quickly and still drive your car the following day. If you’re a young person trying to get yourself something unique, you have to have the space to do it, the time and money, another form of transport until it’s done and if you’re lucky enough to have all of that, find an insurance company that will quote you. I have a vintage car now but can barely even insure that despite being 25 because the insurance companies do not want to insure me purely based on my age. Not to mention that you can’t insure any of the jap cars mentioned in the video until you are 30. The only option at the end of it all for anyone under 25 is buy a cheap car with high tax and insurance or buy a expensive car with cheaper tax and insurance. Nobody is going to modify their new financed 3 series, so the only cars left with some sort of twist on a car is the mk4/bora/is200s because you can do it yourself cheap and quick. If it was possible to insure the classic cars younger the car scene would explode tomorrow. I couldn’t tell you how often I see comments asking about insurance for a classic or vintage car for someone under 25. It’s unfortunate because it’s not that the younger people want the car scene we have now, it’s that it’s our only real option. I hope that it does change because we’d love nothing more than to freshen up the car scene a bit.
Apologies for the spiel ! Keep up the great work lads

    I had bought a 2007 550i BMW 4.8L V8 naturally aspirated with a ZF6HP26 auto transmission. The car had 90k miles with a known camshaft/crankshaft correlation code.
I had fully went through the car, checked the codes, checked all fluids, brakes etc etc. I checked the transmission fluid and it was dark black, the clutch plates were smoked which partly explained the rare erratic shifts.
I had replaced all 4 camshaft sensors and the crankshaft sensor. That removed 3 camshaft crankshaft correlation codes but one last sensor was still giving the code
Spent a few weeks researching the car and talking to a few local BMW shops. Nobody understood why it would still be giving that code.
I spent another 2 weeks researching the car, parts etc.
i decided i wanted to spent time fully rebuilding the car to restore it as close to “factory” condition as i could. I knew if i sold it after i probably wouldn’t make a whole lot back if any at all. It was more of an experience and a past-time for me
I gathered around $8k and began the hellish year and a half rebuild process.
To sum up the rebuilt i dropped the subframe with the engine and transmission. I removed the engine and transmission from the subframe and put the subframe back on the car so i could roll it out of the shop.
I completely stripped the engine and transmission down to the bare block/case.
Between FCP Euro, BMW Dealerships and eBay i purchased everything i would need to rebuild both the engine and transmission with 99% factory parts.
I had the block decked and honed, the heads professionally rebuilt involving replacing the valve guides, nutblasting all the carbon build up, resurfacing the heads etc. Installed new King Bearings for conrod and main bearings, piston rings, head gaskets, i replaced and fixed a common issue with the coolant transfer pipe and fixed/resolved many other common issues.
For the transmission i replaced all bearings, clutch plates, gaskets on the transmission and rebuild the valve body, also replaced all the solenoids with ZF genuine parts
I had moved so i no longer had access to a lift and Basically after 3k miles the transmission slipped out of gear and has never gone back into any gear since. No abnormal noises or anything. I havent been able to look at it as now im an OTR truck driver and im only home 3 days out of the month. In a few weeks im going to take the car to a scrap yard and move on. The most heartbreaking thing for me. Usually i can shake stuff off and use it for comedy but its been really hard to “own it” and make fun of myself. It was an incredible process and i wouldnt take it back. But i really wish i had able to fix it up

I think its partly just how the times go that the car scene shifts and evolves, especially as the prices of the stars of that scene become unobtainable.
I'm sure there were guys with MK1 and MK2 Escorts who saw the prices of them skyrocket from Affordable to relatively unobtainable and saw an influx of Cheaper "Japanese Crapcans" and wondered how they were ever supposed to get excited for them. The same in the states when Muscle and Pony cars went from cheap and affordable to unobtainably expensive and JDM cars started to take over.
The scene evolves because it has to, it has before as the decades passed and it will again. Alot of the reason we love modifying cars isn't for what they start out as, but for what they can be turned into, its turning our underdog into a Hero, or maybe just being able to spot Golf/Bora is yours across the Carpark at Tesco.

Concerning RDS Europe. The name was meant to read like "a Pro AM series for the European part of Russia". There is also RDS Asia for the eastern part, not all the Asian countries :) I believe it's that simple.

Even though I'm about to turn 30, I feel I have more in common with the "older" lads that are into their Cortinas, mk2 Escorts and Sierras and what not, than with the younger generation. They still know what its like to "meet at the shed" and work on cars, to save up for a long time to get that one rare bit for your car, to spend 2-3 years on a build without even having driven the car for more than 1km overall. The younger lads have no interest in getting drawn into the actual car life, and the ups and downs of it all. I see that there is a lot of interest in the experience that can be had from owning an older, more "exciting" car, but as soon as anything other than the glorious 5min that is shown on social media hits them (constant breakdowns, unobtanium parts, planning, time and money), they lose interest. Seems to me that the beginnings of social media was the best time to be a car person, as it was a big family, and now if you don't have the "best thing" that is currently fashionable and popular, you're a nobody in the car world. There is no in between nowadays, no room to start or progress. If its not instant , it seems not worth pursuing for the young lads.
Recently have witnessed a case where a young lad had gotten the wrong diff for his car (freshly bought old car), simply because he thought that if he gets the m3 diff, that it is the best one out there for his car (we advised him that it wont fit before he bought it, but he felt that we just didn't want him to have the best bit for his car). It wouldn't fit as the car is a non m3, so the lad lost all interest in the car and got a Golf that had the pops and bangs craic on it. He's still happy out with it as it immediately put him into the "popular" scene of the car world.
I feel like channels like this, where its actually based on Irish car scene, and shows the ups and downs as they happen, may work to some extent, to help them get around the fact that it is normal, and ok, to not be instantly entering the hall of fame of the car world, that its ok to take time, learn and make mistakes, and that older cars do what older cars do, no matter how famous, expensive, or hyped they may be.

Big fan of this podcast idea, it's really nice to be able to watch something where you can chat about things instead of trying to cram everything in, I agree with the fast consumer point I didn't realize before how much of an impact it must have on lengths of videos and trying to fill them with just relevant things, I watch most videos the night they come on because I look forward to them and seeing the updates most of the time it doesn't matter what car you guys are working on because it's just great to see car guys doing car stuff not just springs and wheels keep it up can't wait for the next podcast 👌🔥

As a 24 year old, I've been raised in the era of the diesel car, yes they're not as high horse power as its petrol alternative but sometimes its enough, smoke maps have ruined the opinion of them but at the end of the day it shouldn't matter what fuel your putting in your car, as you were saying though and I think your right about creating something to stand out but people are afraid to take risks it's all a follow the leader mentality, hopefully this makes sense 😂

This video hit most things to do with the Car Scene these days, have only seen via social media on the scene in Ireland, I’m from just outside Belfast. Everything nowadays is trend based, there is no longer “builds” taking the time and actually building a car.
    Nobody dares to be different!
What are your thoughts on finance vs saving to pay for parts? Would love to hear this in a video!

I think you are absolutely right about the whole car culture now... I come into the world of JDM cars and modified cars in general late, when I was younger I always loved cars mainly due to racing games and the fast and furious films but never had a car of my own, but one of my friends at the time could drive and would do exactly what you are talking about on here, he would buy a car (Fiesta, Focus, Corsa) put some lowering springs on it and new wheels with some random (club) sticker on the back window and at the time I thought this was amazing as I knew no different. I first found out about drifting a few years back when my mum that used to live near Teesside thought some thugs was racing up and down the street could hear the tyre screeching, she phoned me and said I think there is a go kart track near by maybe you should go see, when I got there it was a local practice day and I was amazed real life drifting around the corner, then somehow I come across this TH-cam and the BDC and lots more opening now my massive interest in drift cars and cars in general. I now have an E46 drift car which I've done all of the work on myself and as much as it's a lump of crap I've put a lot of time and effort into this one car and I love driving it, I can now see that what my friend thought was car culture wasn't in my eyes, he wanted to look cool and go to car meets that wasn't focused on the cars... I've since followed this channel for a long time and try to watch every video that gets uploaded as I now have a passion for JDM cars and drift cars and one day I'm hoping to have enough money to buy my own JDM car (whichever it may be). I always get annoyed with lads from work for example one of the younger lads (20) said to me I want a new car what should I get... I immediately replied a chaser... he had no idea what a chaser was yet he claimed to be a car guy, I was blown away with this.... there are so many people I work with that have a golf gti with a map and springs, or a golf r with a map, or a Fiesta.... which is all done in a garage by someone else and that to me I just don't like... there is no passion for it.
I followed the gameschangers series and loved seeing the cars be built, then seeing them at BDC was great... seeing the final finished product was literally amazing and it actually felt strange seeing them in person after watching them be built for so long... I enjoy watching the videos seeing all the ups and downs as it shows that it's not all plain sailing and as they say 'bolt on parts' everything wants to fight back.... and I think this is what separates the real car enthusiasts to what some people class as car enthusiasts...
I have rambled on in this comment but just wanted to share my experience of how I've come to know this car culture and how I think its changed my view on cars...
Hopefully will come over to Ireland to visit at some point and can't wait to see more videos and now podcasts! Keep up the good work to everyone at the Drift Games Team... oh and hope to see you at BDC this year.
    Dave.

    Hey Lads,
Firstly great work on the podcast! Super interesting chat, production level was great, loved it! Just my two cents on the whole car culture thing. I totally agree with your views on the Bora/IS200 gang and I have been unlucky enough to see the negative effects these kind of crews bring to car meets. It’s not cool!
I just wanted to share some positivity when it comes to shows. I started a small club/group a few years back and we have to date (due to Covid) just had two events. I just wanted to share a comment on here to mention how incredible the groups of people have been that have attended. We have had 50-100 cars at these drives, turning up at 7am to go for a drive with other enthusiasts and the whole idea behind our group is that every car enthusiast is invited, we’ve had old Land Rovers cruising alongside new R35’s, Supra’s cruising with classic Mini’s and a Pajero parked next to a E30M3. It’s a real mix. A big personal high for me was seeing a younger guy with a 4k car talking to someone with a 40/50k+ car about their equal love for machines. Regardless of their values. I just wanted to mention this so that people know there is a positive side to the Irish Car community at the moment. There are people out there who are of all ages & income levels who appreciate and love cars respectfully. Yes there are the messers, but like any community, there will always be a slightly negative side (take football hooligans for example). I guess the best thing we can do as a community (and it’s something you guys are nailing!) is show off that better side. Show off the big builds, the respectful car meets and the guys & gals who are passionate about cars and love everything bout them.
That’s my view on the whole thing, lets not give them others too much airtime.
    Dave (@DriveIreland)
P.S If this does get read out feel free not to mention the group name on the podcast if you’d prefer, I don’t want this to seem like I’m trying to plug the group. I just wanted to share some positivity.

And as for your question "is car culture dying ?" I think not one thing to help preserve car culture is to pass the passion on, ride alongs, children/schools, technical schools. alot of people do not get a proper introduction into the community. Fact of the matter is, rarely will anyone afford a second car to make it a project. 5k project will barely get you an is200 or a decent Mx5.
People end up only driving their (daily) cars and can't afford to do long term projects on them as they need it for work the following Monday. That leaves people with little options. I had to take a week off work to have my Gt86 turbo'd. I can only imagine how long a wide body, or engine build/swap can take and how much. People are afraid to not have a working car in the morning when it's time to go work and so the mods they end up doing are like you mentioned, an exhaust, a map, and a set of springs with wheels. Quick and reliable mods?

Ye hit so many great points about car culture nowadays. I grew up with max power magazines and loved seeing the creativity and commitment of guys putting so much into their projects. Very sad to see the prices as well but there are some gems out there still. VIP stuff can be got relatively cheap (crowns, Celsiors, late 90s early naughties 5 series beamer). If people are willing to buy an automatic there's decent selection there.

I came into the car scene in the mid 00's and as you guys mention have been lucky enough to see the 'old skool' type scene, forum builds, car cruises and shows with mental one off builds.
It is hard as if I was now in my early 20s and let's say for example had £20k to spend ... would I buy a 'now' 30yr old car that is older than me with nostalgia that I don't understand or would you buy something generic all your mates have running 350hp, some air ride and nice wheels whilst keeping it reliable ?
Hopefully summer 2022 brings some crazy builds that stand out from the sea of fiesta St's and mk7 golf's.

To touch on the car scene issue. Magazines are the problem. In 2000 every month majority of us would go buy Maxpower, Fast Car, Redline ( probably the better produced mag) Revs and if you went to tower records on Wicklow street you could get all the j tuning mags from America. These magazines were great they taught us everything from styling to engine parts and of course ICE. That no longer exists as Dave quite rightly said there's no bar being raised to the younger generation and they just don't have the interest or more than anything they just don't know. It seems as though there's no influence on how to build cars that can carry the presence like a Pulsar Gtir with front mount intercooler in the rearview mirror because move over I want to play! But great first episode lads get it up on Spotify too.

I've noticed some people buy the car go FBO beat on it for awhile and move on to the next newest shiny car and keep it moving. I'm not mad at it because in a sense if you can't afford to have a fleet that's a way to do it mod it hopefully in a way where you can make a return for the next project. I would rather build race break rebuild repeat the process and grow a fleet.

Brilliant podcast! Can’t wait to see what comes from this! Really changing it up and doing something unique 🔥 I think with the compound coming soon it will help with the car scene a lot. I think education is key so with doing classes or courses on cars and showing people what fun you can have working on or being around cars can be. Community will be the main thing with the compound and I know that it will work! I would surely be up for giving a hand with training days etc on a variety of things.
Also I think that you guys know so many talented skilful people, the likes of Ryan from vital who could come down to the compound and show off what he does, then people can really appreciate it more and appreciate more of the hard earned results instead if 15 second attention spans like you talked about.

It’s a difficult situation to be in. A lot of people ages 18-23/24 don’t want to invest in a car. A lot of them want to buy a car for €6/€7k that they could sell for the same money a week later. It’s impatience also. They’d rather spend their nights of the week parked up in town with the lads and spend their weekends in the pub or out doing rings somewhere. There isn’t enough passion for a car in my opinion because they’re all the same. Anything a bit strange or different is too much effort to try find parts for or aftermarket support when companies like FK Performace and MCG have lowering springs or coilovers on the Shelf for a golf or bora they can get the same week.

Thoroughly enjoyed that lads - one suggestion, given the much smaller amount of viewer engagements podcasts tend to bring on TH-cam versus regular content, you may want to consider creating a new separate channel purely for the podcasts. With podcasts having lower viewer engagement, that can drag down all of the content on the channel in the algorithm that drives suggested videos, average channel views etc and thus actually harms somewhat the channel. Having a separate channel for the podcasts avoids this and is something other creators have done. That aside, really looking forward to more podcasts (and all of your content) - keep up the great work!

Guys...I have heaps of comments on the episode, but I'll try to keep it concise. #1: I cant believe that all the cars after a certain point are diesel in Ireland. That has to honestly be the worst thing. #2. I am with Dave on this, I've lived through the times where you could get an S13 in the states for less than $1000 and they were literally throw away cars. Drift guys were always saying 5 years ago, "Oh, I'll just re-shell if I wreck my car." That ain't happening anymore. I think that I've lived through all of the phases that Dave is talking about, and its hard to find dudes that are younger that have the same passion for building cars as I do. I've had my s14 for nearly 10 years, and could never have built anything close to what I have at today's prices. For what people are paying for the "JDM Legends" I could almost buy a brand new Supra, and the upcoming 400z or any number of used cars that would be infinitely better. Aaron from LoneStarDrift always is thinking about the "next big thing" in drifting here, and he's been asking similar questions about what comes next. #3: As for current car culture, you guys have it VASTLY different from what we have here in the US. Everything here is hellcat/scat pack chargers and challengers, mustangs, camaros, SUVs and they are all about the whole "Takeover" culture. That comes up so much on tiktok because literally every single one of those videos, someone seriously gets hurt or their cars get wrecked. #4: Be happy you don't have the same diesel truck culture that we have here...those dudes are something else. Lastly, I'll say that I enjoy nearly all of the content that you guys have been putting out because its entertaining, its real, and it gives me a window into the world outside of the same old US car culture. Thanks again, and look forward to competing with you at the Riverside Drift 50K this year.

My opinion on the Irish car scene is mostly money.
The reason people just lower and do wheels on a car is because it can still be used as a daily, so only one insurance policy, tax and mot/nct. Also for example a Lexus can carry your mates about and go do circles at a road end. The big diesel scene I think is due to red diesel and getting pretty high hp numbers and cheaper insurance for the power.
I have 2 classic cars I have very little mods to, because I know all them modifications just usually make it more unreliable and if you ever want to sell, you’ll never get your money back.
Say your dream car is a supra or e90 m3 for example, why pour thousands into a car when your under 20 when you could save that money and be closer to buying your dream car.
I don’t like taking my cars out to many shows or anything anymore because it’s just not worth it, also work and family life comes first. And the bora/Lexus owners have plenty of time on their hands lol even if I was to go I’d rather drive up in my diesel vw.
Although the one place I will go every year is Donegal rally because the cars and the crack is worth it in my opinion

the car scene is hard as i love modified cars but its hard when u have kids and need something like a 4 door and you want it safe. so end up with a diesel mondeo which whatever mods you do to it everyone has to much of a opinion and they are quick enough to slate what u do. i miss the max power era when u could go to a show and see something that some one has put time and effort into modding. im glad i have found you guys as i been into drifting for a while but never got into it to do but as im trying to set up my familys future im hoping to be able to get something that i be able to go sideways in. as my daughter keeps pestering for me to get something rear wheel drive so something will be in my future. keep up the awesome content and loved the podcast.

Picking up on a few things. 1. In Ireland anyway, the price of things are mental and I’m not just talking cars. The cars that were bought 10-15 years ago for 5k are 20k now. People can’t afford them and the problem is only getting worse. Dealers have picked up on it and premiums for average cars are going through the roof 2. We’ve hit peak petrol. Companies aren’t building fast petrols anymore. You just have to look at Subaru and the fact there won’t be an STi in petrol format again. So there won’t be high volume production of ‘fast’ cars in order to make them attainable to the next generation. That’s why hot hatches are kinda the last hurray performance petrol IMO. 3. Even if they were building the cars, people want the older stuff, S15s, R32s, Evos etc, but see point 1. 3. The cost to build a car once you’ve bought it….respray 5-8k for something decent, coilovers, wheels and tyres 3-4K, engine rebuild, fancy ecu, and a tune …could be anything from 5-20k. Anyone who could actually afford to do a build is probably trying to buy a house, so who has the money for a fancy money pit that at the end of the day would have to be broken to recover the money.
It’s no wonder is200 and diesel VAG cars are the order of the day. They’re cheap enough and parts are widely available. No young enthusiast is going to pick an is200 over a 90’s performance JDM but they don’t have a choice, they’re priced out of it, and if they could buy it, they couldn’t build it with the price of stuff. 4. Insurance…enough said
The reason you remember the cars of your youth so much is because you didn’t face the problems above for the most part. That’s just not the case anymore and it’s not right to be hard on them because of it.

Definitely enjoyed this, it's really something different you're doing.
Most of the Drift community is pretty toxic when it comes to politics, it's definitely a risky move but I'm all for it. At the end, it's your opinion and you're entitled to it. Can't wait for next Wednesday.

100% agree about the scene, I love modified ca a and standard cars but I hate the idea of meets being standard cars that are on cut springs and covered in soot but that’s cool and if you don’t follow like sheep your ridiculed. Every car you work on on the channel I love and appreciate all the time given to other peoples cars

I think car financing has played a big part in the way the car scene is going 🥴 just at how easy it is to get into a "fancy" german boat 😅 and why is200s in my opinion are the top car at the moment is because of the price of them, they are the last cheap rwd japanese branded car that are a good all rounder as a daily that you can kick the back out here are there. The parts availability and the reliability of them has made them what they are today 🙈 the road used to be full of honda civics.. now its is200s and now not a civic to be seen on the roads 🙈 is200s will die off in a few years.

Its definitely down to what cars you can get your hands on in Ireland. VRT Tax and Insurance plays a big part into what you can get and the prices of cars compared to the UK is crazy.

Glad to see yere actually opinions on the car culture ,I’m 20 and I drive a Toyota celica , I’ve had the diesels and hated every minuite of owning diesel cars , I daily drive my celica and I’m building it the way I want to , to bring it to shows and meets , but the state of the car scene at the moment is shite , every meet is just lads with pop corn limiters on their golfs , and agri lads with their cb radios on is200 doing rings , it’s shit

First of all i really enjoyed this 💖 lone big problem i see in car culture is younger people cannot stand setbacks.. And its not their fault, its just how they are raised... But i am seeing lots of guys just quitting this hobby about smallest problem.. I have few younger friends in our small club and together we older guys try to help them learn and enjoy cars... Loving that you guys are showing it all on your videos, setbacks, friends and "glory" is all parts of this hobby. And maybe someone can learn from it that its not allways going by plan but its still fun as h*ll 🤙💖

Japanese cars are really hard to afford these days along with the running costs, u have to have an awful amount of interest in them and unfortunately I think money is a factor for alot of people but if u really have the interest in that side of the scene u will find a way to have one of those cars, I personally have 2 kids and I'm only 26 but I find a way to have a skyline and an a sr20 project altezza, there's always a way to make things work and get your dream car you just have to work for it and don't take the easy option, as ye have said in the video these things take time and patience but the it's worth it in the end in my opinion, the one thing I miss is the online forums and seeing what lads are doing each week to there cars, it would be great to see a forum come back around, loved the podcast can't wait to hear more lads! Keep it up!

great podcast this and some great topics. imo the internet killed the car scene. back in the day you would have to go to a meet to see cars and you appreciated a wide range of cars and even if you didnt like it you could see the work that went into it. now everyone is only in FB groups of the same model or brand of car. everyone seems to think its that brand or the other cars are crap. its a real shame but i think the car scenes ruined now and dont see it going back. also i love the builds i prefer to see it through all of the stages. keep up the good work lads!

I think more people need to do crazy builds so there’s more variety for someone who wants to do their own build. And crazy doesn’t just mean lower and more stance, actually fresh ideas and new things to do to the few cars cheap enough.

Class podcast Lads! Bring back forum builds! There's still good forums and facebook groups out there but they all seem to be specific to a certain make of car or type of build. If we were to have a big online shed going where people can document any kind of build they have going on, with a nice, easy to navigate, aesthetically pleasing site. you could even rate some of the builds as part of your podcast?

This could sound like three old men shouting at kids 🤣🤣🤣 Nah that's a great point about the eegits at the meets in their Bora's on Merc wheels and cut springs. There are still good meets dotted around but overall the scene is painful for real car enthusiasts at the moment.

Being a dude of the mid 30s this is a common feeling for us all. I know the Low Origin lads talk about the current UK drift scene, and how the movement of this has changed in the last few years also. I do think that people love to obtain something that is easily achievable and dont like to fight for what they feel is right, or what they're passionate about (e.g. cars, "car clubs" and "brands" that have been started up in the last 2-3 years and have finished already expecting a fast result, which is never the case). You guys have been fighting the fight for a while now and you are realistically voicing what and how all us like-minded people feel... Pre-social media is where the golden ages are. Where you had build forums, magazines, booklets and actual websites for information about the cars and what you are interested in.
If you didnt want to read through all that:- Basically people have become too impatient and social media has fuelled this resulting in this movement :(
    * Kudos to those die-hard fans that are still trying to push through it all! *
Moving forward:- For me, I love watching things that I can learn from. Not too bothered about the finished object, as there are millions of videos like this and are all becoming repetitive. So 'Juicebox, Driftworks, older LZ vids, Shirts Tucked In (raw driving), Luke Fink (hard driving and just having fun)... Just keep having fun and do what you do :)

Have to say I enjoyed that lads, well done. I am a TH-camr too, I started doing it because I was fed up working for someone else with no time or energy to work on cars, after 3 years! I've made around a grand! 😆 but I'm happy doing it. Some day I hope to get your type of money! Lol, I agree with your statement about people wanting information now! It's very like this on youtube, when they get bored they click away. I don't think there is a way to save our car scene in Ireland, it's only us old farts hanging on to memories of better days. If it is to be saved, I think that we should just try to encourage younger people to have their daily dropped smog machines for getting around but get a project car, learn more about it, build it on the weekends, hoping to one day get it on the road, and have people admire something that you created that nobody else has, it's not all about supras or skylines, there are some beautiful old car's that don't need to be fast to get noticed. Anyway, I look forward to the next podcast. Cheers lads. 🍻

Building a car these days isn't what it was in the 90s early 2000s, I can't go to local car stores anymore and touch and feel parts, it's a guessing game of how cheap the metal in the picture online is!!, I've got a old 205 gti currently in storage, the plan was to stick a 2ltr twin cam sierra underneath it and have some fun, but the price of a gti shell, let alone a twin cam sierra worth touching is ridiculous. Building the mi16 I have isn't financially viable either....Hey dave if u want a 205 project hit me up hahaha...

As an outsider looking into the culture, a decade ago you would pass a petrol station or town square and see someone's pride and joy. There might have been a line of civics with underglow or an s15 with graphic wrapped around it but you knew the lads who owned each one. They all had a personal touch. Insurance going up. Emigration comes around, a lot of lads off to Aus and Canada. Young lads that grew up flicking through Max Power and Slick magazine getting dished out loans and picking up someone else's hard work for half what it's worth. A lot of cars get wrote off. Car parks start emptying and sheds being kept full.
A few years pass by and all of a sudden there's Facebook memories being shared, tagging 10 lads 'if I only had her now. If I knew then it'd be worth 10 times what I paid'.
Again, as an outsider looking in. The attention span today has dropped so much. Open up Netflix and your bombarded with shows over movies. TH-cam, tiktok, twitch. All fast content. A lot of young lads want a cheap car with fast mods. Pair of wind deflectors from micksgarage, back windows tinted, Teddy stuck behind the mirror and a big ol sticker in the rear window. Get the content up on socials ASAP. There's no room for picking something up and learning slowly over time and conversation how to build and repair. There's no working for a month to order a part and wait weeks for it to come. Round up the lads and get the car together. It's all about brownie points to a lot of lads now. Know the lingo but not what it means. 'Twin cam' is the car equivalent of folk on twitter saying 'neo liberal', majority of the time the person saying it hasn't any more of a notion as to the meaning than the person reading. But as long as ya say it There's the mutual head shaking.
I worked in a steel factory and you'd see so much of it. Lads coming in making 600 quid a week laughing it up, no care in the world if they were there the following week or not. The wage gone by Sunday morning. And not on the car. Felt like a decade ago the cars were lined up while the rest of us were in the pub, that was their social outliet. Windows down and talk the night away. Now they are either parked up or roaring down the main street turning heads for all the wrong reasons.
Might have it all wrong and now but just some observations. There'll always the the people doing the best with what they can. Whether that's an astra or a yaris. I agree with Josh that sometimes that can be tough when your in a place of needing advice and learning. Not easy when the majority are booming around in boras laughing at yer efforts.
A months wage could but ya a bride seat or a 06 corolla with tinted windows and loud exhaust. Quick and fast not slow and passionate seems to be taking over
